Celebrating the importance of Health and Physical Education is an essential area of the curriculum that provides real opportunities for children to learn how to lead active and healthy lives - now and in the future. In keeping with the theme, the HPE Department offered a range of alternative activities during regular Physical Education lessons. This year the activities included Bubble Sports Soccer and Laser Tag for our Year 8 and 9 students, and a medley of sports and activities on the oval during our whole school PDP session to be active all ways! PE week also saw the traditional Staff versus Students Netball and Soccer showdowns, which are always hotly contested. For the record, the staff upheld their impeccable record winning both matches - of course it was all fair play too! No shenanigans at all! Care Groups became involved with the fun each morning with the ‘Who’s That Has Been?’ Quiz - a sporting bio from some of our staff members reminiscing about the old days when they were young and maybe a little more physically adept! Whilst we always encourage our students to be active and make healthy choices, it’s also important for staff to be aware of their health too! Some staff took up the ‘Pedometer Challenge’ ensuring they accumulated at least 10,000 steps per day and all staff were also treated to a healthy morning tea themed ‘Swap this…For that’. I hope that all students enjoyed this year’s PE Week and benefitted from being active in a variety of ways! Thank you to all students for their enthusiastic participation and to all staff who assisted throughout the week. Stay active! Ms Candice Mitchell, Health & Physical Education Coordinator

During Week 5, Gleeson College celebrated National Health and Physical Education Week with this year’s theme ‘Be Active, All Ways!’. KIDS ARE LIKE KITES > ‘Soar as You are Meant to Soar’

I was kindly reminded recently that there are about 30 days until Christmas! The year certainly has flown by in a flash, and this time of year is perfect for beginning to reflect on the events that have shaped the last 12 months. Christmas is a time of great celebration, and the season of Advent, leading up to Christmas is a time of waiting and reflection. As I am quickly discovering, Gleeson College continues to be humming with activity, celebration and community spirit as we head towards the end of the school year.

Staff MassThe Staff Mass led by Monsignor Swann was a wonderful opportunity to share special time with one another. We are very blessed to have such opportunities, and thanks must go to Mr Adam Cibich for organising the Mass, and to Monsignor Swann for celebrating!

Student LeadershipI was in awe again of our Student Leadership Team at the meeting held recently, led by Mr Shannon Bertram. The young men and women who represent their peers, and the College community, are outstanding in the way they formally conduct the scheduled meetings and maintain a great sense of fun and collegiality. They are wonderful ambassadors, and the skills they are developing here will hold them in great stead for whatever the future brings.

Year 8 Family Induction EveningThe Year 8 Family Induction Evening was a resounding success, not least of which because of the P&F Committee’s organisation of the BBQ! What better way to welcome the newest members of our community than over a shared meal? It was the perfect way to begin a lovely evening of information-sharing and conversation. Mr Andrew Baker, our Principal, spoke of the enormous milestone it is to begin secondary schooling, for parents and families as much as for students, and the poem he shared was beautiful and is a timely reminder of the blessing it is to be a parent:

Kids Are Like Kitesby Erma Bombeck

You spend a life time trying to getthem off the ground

You run with them until youare breathless.

They crash. They hit the roof top.You patch and comfort, adjust and

assure them that someday they will fly. Finally, they are airborne.

They need more string andyou keep letting it out.

But with each twist of the twine, there is a sadness that goes with joy.The kite becomes more distant, and you know it won’t be long before that

beautiful creature will snap the lifeline that binds you two together and will soar

as it is meant to soar, free and alone.Only then did you know that

you did your job well.

Year 11 ExamsJust as the Year 12 Exams conclude, the Year 11 Exams begin! The Year 11 students have conducted themselves very maturely and clearly prepared themselves well. We thank their Teachers (Subject and Care Group) for the significant effort and expertise they provide our students all year. We wish all of our students well in their assessments.

College Board Annual General MeetingParent involvement in a school is so important! We take the partnership between home and school very seriously, and value it very highly. It was wonderful to see parents attending and participating in College life in this way. May I take this opportunity to thank the Board for their warm welcome of me, and for the terrific work they do for our College community, often in the background. Thanks must go also to our Business Manager, Mr Paul O’Connor, who is such an asset to Gleeson College. Thank you all for your effort and energy, they are so appreciated.

Saturday Morning SportFinally this week, I would like to acknowledge the dazzling array of co-curricular activities on offer at Gleeson College. Not only is the list of activities extensive, it seems that every single student is a participant in one way or another! This is a reflection of the commitment to, and pride in the College, and it is just a delight to witness. Research shows that the best education is one which develops the whole person – physically, intellectually, emotionally, socially and spiritually. My sense, already, is that Gleeson College does that exceedingly well.

Have a blessed week!

TRANSITION DAYS > Welcoming Our New Year 8 Students for 2017!

Last week the newest members of the Gleeson Community spent a Transition Day at the College. The focus of the transition, held across two days, was to welcome our new Year 8 students, familiarise them with Gleeson traditions, buildings and grounds, meet key staff, settle nerves, meet new people and importantly, have fun!

Activities included a Japanese lesson, PE Week activities, House allocation and a House tour of the College with a competitive Pokemon twist!

On Monday night, over 300 family members of our Year 8 Class of 2017 attended Family Induction Evening at the College. Families enjoyed a shared meal - a BBQ tirelessly provided and cooked by the Gleeson Parents and Friends Committee.

Families (both new and current) had the opportunity to hear some key information about our College. After this, families were able to mingle among key staff to ask their own specific questions as well as chat with other families.

Thank you to all staff for their presence and efforts to welcome new families. I’d also particularly like to acknowledge our Middle School Leaders and student volunteers who assisted in preparations and provided support during the event and on the Transition Days.

Much thanks also goes to the P&F for all their support and preparations in catering for everyone - many hands make light work. The P&F are great advocates for the College in many events and involving our current community and importantly also interactions and events involving our new and potential Gleeson families.

YEAR 10 CHILD STUDIES > SFX Year 1 Students Enjoy Fun Learning Activities

Year 10 Child Studies students walked over to St Francis Xavier’s Regional

Catholic Primary School to implementa variety of literacy activities to a

Year 1 Class last Friday.

The task requested students to work in small groups to plan and carry out activities suitable to the development

and needs of a Year 1 student. In order to effectively engage the attention

span of Year 1 students for 50 minutes, students developed a ‘getting-to-know-

you’ activity focusing on drawing, and also two literacy activities. During the

planning process students enjoyed reflecting on memories of their own favourite childhood picture books. ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ was

a stand out!

Before heading over to SFX, our Gleeson students had a lot to prepare for their visit. Students had an opportunity to

trial one activity they had planned to their fellow class members and

receive feedback. The students found this activity useful, and learnt the

importance of asking suitable questions to keep engagement high, and how

to scaffold activities to help students achieve their maximum. Students also had to research the attention span of a Year 1 student and their stages of

educational development.

The activity session was a huge success! Students should be very proud of their efforts and creativity. Not one activity

was the same! The SFX Year 1 students loved having Gleeson students there, and have invited us to come back. In Stage 1 and Stage 2 Child Studies we

continue to provide students with ‘real life’ opportunities such as this, making

this experience a fantastic starting point!

Thank you SFX, and especially Teacher (and Gleeson Old Scholar!) Melissa

Nocera, for having us and providing us with this amazing opportunity!
