‘BEST OF BROADWAY’ ON SHOW > 2016 Creative Arts Concert

Issue 17 / Friday 17 June 2016

The Globe Newsletter of Gleeson College

Last week, our talented Gleeson College Performing Arts students presented a ‘Best of Broadway’ Creative Arts Concert with two matinee and two evening shows wowing the crowds!

Many of the acts presented were choreographed, directed and created by the students themselves. The show

was produced by Year 12 Creative Arts students’ Matilda Comley (12

DSSAL) and Dylan Creeney (12 HSMAN) who both did an excellent job in the

organisation and management of the entire production. The amount of talent

here at Gleeson truly is astounding!

The matinees were performed to the Year 8s and 9s from Gleeson College on

the Wednesday and then to students from Years 3-5 from St Francis Xavier’s

Regional Catholic Primary School on the Thursday. The evening concerts were presented in a cabaret style with our Year 10 Food and Hospitality Classes

providing delicious nibbles for the audience. A huge thank you must go

to both Ms Lisa Feleppa and Ms Sarah Mahony and their F&H students, for

offering such a great array of finger-food

(some music-themed!). Another huge thank you goes to Mrs Sally Parsons for her fabulous choreography of many of the dances presented and who also did an amazing job of stage managing the show. Thank you also to Mrs Dianne

Deptula whose expertise and presence during the week was greatly appreciated.

All of the concerts received rave reviews including this wonderful review from a

visiting grandparent:“My husband and I attended and thoroughly enjoyed the evening. We are in awe of the young talent which we saw on stage and I

would like you to know that as grandparents of ten children, and many school concerts under our belts over the years, yours last

night was a 10-star performance. Not only was it entertaining, but thoughtfully

presented with the lovely dips and nibbles, followed by delicious cupcakes, all prepared

by your students. So well done Gleeson College, and a big thank you from us!”

Congratulations to all involved on a superb 2016 Creative Arts Concert!

BE INFORMED > School Funding Facts

Be InformedJust in case you hadn’t noticed we are in the throes of a very long Federal Election campaign! Recently, along with my Principal colleagues from Catholic Education South Australia, I had the opportunity to engage with both Federal Minister for Education the Hon. Simon Birmingham, and Shadow Minister the Hon. Kate Ellis. Both outlined their vision for education if elected, and the Principals took the opportunity to ask each MP a number of questions. Funding levels, both recurrent and for Capital development, to Catholic Schools continues to be a significant issue that requires addressing by both Federal and State governments. The National Catholic Education Commission has produced an

excellent website that outlines the key facts relating to school funding that I encourage you to visit. It can be accessed at the link below:http://www.schoolfundingfacts.com/

As parents and caregivers that make a significant contribution to Catholic Education in this state I encourage you to engage with the key issues raised during the election campaign as they pertain to education.

Master PlanningWe are nearing completion of the College Master Plan. We have been working with Edge Architects throughout this year focussing on consultation with key stakeholders including the College Board, staff, students and Catholic Education Office personnel. This has been a very positive and affirming process and one that is leading to some very exciting ideas and developments. I look forward

to sharing these with the community at the completion of the Master Plan. It is our intention to invite members of the community to a launch some time in Term 3. Watch this space!

Skills of Tomorrow I am sure many of you have read articles proclaiming the benefits of particular learning programs and the need to provide a curriculum to fit the needs of our 21st Century learners. When this is supported by good research we should not ignore the recommendations. There are some uncertainties about knowledge and skills that will be truly useful for today’s students in tomorrow’s world, but I am sure that some fundamental things will remain.

Erik Palmer, in an article in Educational Leadership earlier this year entitled ‘Four Predictions for Students’ Tomorrows’ outlined key propositions that he believes need to be part of the educational landscape:• There will still be an Internet. This

means that being able to make sense of an overwhelming amount of information is a crucial skill.

• Salespeople will still exist. To evaluate these sales pitches, students will need an understanding of logic, reasoning argument and persuasive techniques.

• Listening will still be important. This means that all students will need to be media literate so they can listen well to different kinds of media.

• People will still be speaking. Speaking skills will be vital in a world where the channels for verbal communication will continue to grow.

Therefore, if we accept Palmer’s predictions for our young people, we can assume that internet literacy, media literacy, good thinking, and good speaking will be valued every day of their lives. It is pleasing therefore to not that these are key elements to the Gleeson College curriculum and learning experience.

HUGHES HOUSE MASS: Reflecting on our Compassion for Others

On Wednesday 15 June, Hughes House gathered together to

celebrate our annual House Mass in the Dame Roma Mitchell Centre.

Led by Modbury/Para Hills Parish Priest, Father Manu, we came together to give thanks for our blessings, celebrate the ‘Year of Mercy’ and reflect to on our

compassion for others.

With the Mass themed around mercy and compassion and with the

St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal currently being held throughout the College, all students were

challenged to act out their faith and demonstrate their compassion by attending with a small donation of non-perishable food, clothing and/or blankets. Collectively we were able to gather over 100 food items and many other clothing items and

winter necessities.

The House Mass was a great opportunity for staff, students and special guests to take some time

out of their busy day to deepen their faith and to reflect on how they can

act on it to support others.

I would like to thank all those who participated in the Mass and those

who assisted in the preparation, set-up and running, particularly Mr Adam Cibich and Mrs Dianne Deptula, singers, readers and all

those involved in processions.

YEAR 10 GIRLS KNOCKOUT NETBALL > Tough Round 1 Roster @ Home

On Wednesday 15 June our Year 10 Knockout Netball girls took to the court in a round robin tournament against Thomas More College and Henley High School at the Golden

Grove Rec Centre.

The team had a great first game against Thomas More, playing

consistently well to win the game 60-24. However, our second game against a strong Henley HS team was to be quite a challenge as we

lost some much needed height with Brianna Gibbs unfortunately rolling her ankle early in the first quarter. Gleeson shooter Lauren Wright (10 MSSPI) was strong in the goal circle

converting all her goal attempts, while the solid defensive skills displayed by Sydney Wilson (10 HSMAN), Rachel

Gill (10 FSMAR) and Stephanie Guidolin (9 HMGIL) ensured Henley

had to work very hard for each score.

There was a shift in momentum in the second quarter with Henley HS utilising their very tall GS well,

however good pressure was applied by our girls at all times. Emma Quinn (9 FMHAU) and Paris Sinclair (9 FMCAR)

ensured that Gleeson continued to have ample opportunity at the ring as they found Lauren most of the time.

Hard-working Centre Karlee Turner (9 FMWIL) ensured her work rate didn’t slip and this gave us every chance to win. The third quarter saw Gleeson

out-score Henley 11-8, but we couldn’t hold the tempo in the last quarter

with the final result 48-40 in Henley’s favour.

The Year 10 girls should not only be proud of the efforts in their games

but can hold their heads high as they showed fantastic sportsmanship and continued to play a good clean game

of netball to the final whistle.

A big thank you to our scorers Jessica Saul (10 HSUGL) and Kelly Holl (11

HSUGL) for their assistance on the day and also to the parents, staff members and students who came up to the gym

to support the girls!

OPEN GIRLS KNOCKOUT NETBALL > 41-30 Victory Secures Round 2 Berth!

Last Friday 10 June saw the Gleeson Open KO Netball Team play in Round 1 of the Statewide

competition against campus rivals Golden Grove High School at the

Golden Grove Rec Centre.

Both schools where competitive throughout the game, however, on the day Gleeson proved too strong for GGHS as they came away with a 41-30 win. The first quarter was close with GGHS taking the lead, but our Gleeson girls lifted their intensity in the third quarter and

regained the lead in the final term.

Stand out players in Round 1 were Shelby McEvoy (12 DSHUT) who barely missed in the goal ring,

Chelsea Turner (11 FSEMA) who played a solid game in Centre, and

defender Brianna Gibbs (10 HSUGL) who made it challenging for our

opposition to find the net. Shelby Armstrong (12 HSPLL) was moved

from WD to GD at half time and played a huge role keeping Gleeson pushing forward in the second half, while valuable contributions from Rachel Gill (10 FSMAR), Brittany Powell (11 HSMAN) and Niamh

Douglas (12 FSEMA) ensured we secured a berth in Round 2 of the

competition. Well done girls!!

YEAR 9 BIODIVERSITY EXCURSION > Exploring the Impact of Redevelopment

The Year 9 MCKCUR Learning Team visited the South Australian

Museum and Adelaide Oval last week to support the topics students are currently learning

in class this term.

Students enjoyed exploring the Biodiversity section of the

Museum, where they completed a number of activities to broaden their understanding of a variety of

biomes and their adaptions.

We then had lunch at Elder Park, appreciating the changing

landscape of the Adelaide Riverbank precinct. The Class

observed and discussed the number of redevelopments and their impact on tourism in our

city. We ended the excursion with a guided tour of Adelaide Oval

where students learnt about the positive impacts of this sporting redevelopment on local tourism.

‘WOMEN IN SCIENCE’ UNIVERSITY EXPERIENCE AN EYE OPENER

“On Wednesday 8 June, nine students were chosen to attend the

‘Women in Science’ excursion at Adelaide University to learn about

careers in engineering. The best session was the first we attended which was programming a Lego

robot to move in different directions. There were many inspiring lectures

from students, professors and women in business that gave us an

insight on what different engineering courses there are on offer.”

Anna Ivenovichbokuv (9 HMCAS)

“My favourite part of the day was learning about sine and sound waves. We learnt how sound

waves are connected to music and their different frequency’s (Hertz).

It was also very interesting to learn about the different

engineers that the guest speakers (all girls) have become. They were very passionate and you could tell that they loved their jobs. It was inspiring to hear everything that

they had done.” Caitlyn Monga (10 MSRYA)

“During our time at Adelaide University we had the opportunity to

learn more about engineering and the careers that we can choose in the future. I enjoyed the ‘RoboGal’

session the most as we could program the robots to do whatever

we choose and we could watch it move. We also learnt a lot about sound waves and how they look

according to the frequency.”Tyler Dunlop (10 HSFEL)

“My favorite part of the ‘Women in Science’ excursion was the ‘RoboGal’ activity. We got to program a robot

to move in different ways and made shapes with them. We even decorated them - our robot looked gorgeous, trust me! We learnt a bit about software engineering and it

was actually heaps of fun. At the end of the session we programmed the

robots to dance. It was interesting to look around the University and hear all the speakers tell us about what you can actually do in technology

and engineering.”Emily Unewisse (10 DMMCC)

“The best thing that happened on the excursion was making our robots dance! My group’s robot was the best because it had a moustache! The second and third workshops involved analyzing sound waves - the high pitch sound hurts

your ears after a while! The speeches and lectures we received showed some amazing insight into the

world of engineering from a women’s point of view.”Katelyn Harrison (9 MMMOR)

YEAR 12 FURNITURE CONSTRUCTION > Idea Development Excursion

The Year 12 Furniture Construction Class recently completed their

Jarrah side table (Minor Project) as part of their assessment for the semester. The construction of this

table provided the students with the opportunity to develop their skills

and understanding that will support them in designing their own item of

furniture for their Major Project.

Every student put in much time and effort into this project and should be proud of their achievements. Some of these tables will be displayed in the Gleeson Front Office for you to

get a closer look! In order to inspire the students to

develop quality individual designs for their Major Project, last Thursday the class had the opportunity to visit Whitehouse Furniture, The

Mile End Homemaker Centre and IKEA as part of an idea development excursion. The students were able to see first-hand the high quality

and standards that are required in the production of industry standard

furniture, and from here will be able to set appropriate goals and

make clear decisions while working through their Design Folio and Major

Project.

A special thank you to the staff and management at Whitehouse Furniture and IKEA for giving up

their time to speak with the students and supporting them in their idea

development.
