President’s Corner “Spring is nature’s way of saying, ‘Let’s Party!’”  – Robin Williams

The temperature is rising. Snow and ice are mostly gone - there’s so much growth and energy stirring. I can feel it, even though I can’t yet see it. These signs of spring will be wonderfully visible soon. The blossoms and leaves that were formed

in the fall and protected through the winter months will be on full display before we know it.

With creative work, too, there are seasons. Sometimes we put in the effort but can’t see any improvement. It might feel like nothing is working. Maybe there’s no energy, or no inspiration, or no time. Sometimes artwork fails to make a connection with other people. There are rhythms in this kind of work, just as there are seasons in the natural world. Growth may be happening in a way that can’t be seen or felt. Sometimes rest is required. It doesn’t always mean that something is wrong, or  that we should give up. Artwork is a journey, and the path is rarely straight.

And then, sometimes our artistic winter begins to thaw. The effort and the long rest produce a riot of productivity. We feel that sweet, warm wind of inspiration. Sometimes a sculpture or drawing or picture seems to make itself with hardly any effort. Sometimes the effort itself feels like play! It’s a pleasure and a joy., and an experience that we can share, through what we make and through the energy and spirit that we gain from the process of making these things.

The GAL seeks new logo All members are welcome to submit logo designs by April 30. Along with fame and glory, there will be a cash prize for the selected design. Designs can be produced by hand or digitally. Here are some logo design quotes to get us going:

• “There are three responses to a piece of design – yes, no, and WOW! Wow is the one to aim for.” - Milton Glaser

• "Design is where science and art break even." - Robin Mathew

• "Design is thinking made visual." - Saul Bass

Send your designs by email or mail to the GAL. While we're at it, do you have a logo of your own? Do you have logo design or artist branding tips you'd like to share with your fellow GAL artists? Send them in and we'll share them on the website and in the next newsletter.

GAL ASKED Send us a special memory or story or someone who

supported or supports you as an artist.

Tim Downs believes that Davida Schulman, a life-drawing instructor at Oakton Community College, as well as a painter,  helped shape him as an artist. Her drawing studio fostered close observation, academic rigor, shared learning critiques, and real enjoyment.  She encouraged me to begin painting and I am forever grateful to her.  He currently attends Saturday morning life drawing at the Devonshire Cultural Center in Skokie.  Observing classmates’ work and learning from them is motivational, educational and enjoyable.

Steve Johnson shared that his Uncle Henry started taking him to the Old Town Art Show when he was a teenager. Soon after he got to know the artist, Donald Zolan, he drove me out to Zolan’s studio. I was able to view his paintings and I was able to share my work. It was Zolan that recommended the American Academy to me, which is where I chose to go to art school.

Lori Indovina-Valus feels her mother supported her artistic endeavors and gave her confidence. “As the youngest sibling I was getting teased a lot, but my Mom told them to leave me alone as I sat drawing. Now my husband is my biggest supporter. He helps me with my art fairs and shows.

Cindy Gitter shares: I have been painting for about five years now… I can’t really say that just one person supports my art, but I would like to talk about a person who has been my teacher, mentor and friend. Roshel Rivellino has been there for me when I started taking classes.  I have since started teaching kids at the school in Long Grove and have a studio there too. I guess the thing I appreciate the most is her way of just letting you have the freedom to explore your own ideas, and then helping you finish and learn how to finish. Also starting to find your own style by, trying all kinds of different techniques.

My family is also on my team, my son Elliot did my website and his fiancé Tianna did photography. My husband lets me paint in the kitchen or wherever I want. For now I have not been in a show. I’m putting in applications for for a few this summer. I have been selling my work, mainly to friends so far.

NEW GAL MEMBER Welcome to our newest Member, JoAnn Varga Tatge. JoAnn’s preferred medium is acrylic, oil, pastel and water color.

MEMBER OPPORTUNITY Gail Basner has a great opportunity for someone wanting to test the art fairs to sell their art. Gail has all the equipment; tent, display panels, weights, pins to hang, browse bin, chairs and the van to haul equipment. Will share this with someone (with her direction and help) who will set-up and tear-down at local art fairs. She is physically not able to do it by herself. Please call Gail Basner at (847) 432-5992 for more information and details.  “This is a good chance to test the market with your art without the expense of the equipment, and you just may have fun!”
