It gives me great pleasure in introducing new staff to the school: Robyn Rawding, Alison Adams, Jemma Connolly and Erena Huriwaka as School Assistants, and Jodie Swan at Reception as Administration Assistant. By now you will have received your child’s communication diary. Please check it daily for any updates and add comments as you see fit. Don’t forget to return it to school with your child each day. Emails will be sent for general communication, such as excursions and newsletters so please continue to check them regularly. Morning and Afternoon Drop Off This is a friendly reminder that the parking bay immediately in front of the school is strictly for drop-offs between 8.30-9.30am and 2.30-3.30pm on school days. With parking at a premium, the staggered start and finish to the school day was initiated to help reduce congestion and risk to pedestrian safety. If you arrive early and need to wait, please consider parking away from the school gate and walk to collect your child. Just so new parents are aware, from time to time inspectors visit without warning to issue infringement notices, particularly for drivers parking on the yellow lines, so please be careful. PS&F – AGM date to be confirmed Parents have a very important role in promoting and supporting our programs at TGS. The Parents, Staff and Friends (PS&F) is an incorporated voluntary body that facilitates the sense of our school community. If you are interested in supporting the school, you may wish to consider a role on the PS&F committee. The Annual General Meeting will be held during February and nominations will be called shortly for the positions of Secretary, Treasurer and Chair. No previous experience is required and support is available to assist with training. Please leave your details with Jodie at Reception if you can lend a hand. Further information will be forwarded shortly so please continue to read your emails on a regular basis. Class Allocations Pastoral Care Groups have been capped at 10 students per class, with each allocated a Teacher and School Assistant. Your main point of contact is your child’s class teacher as case manager. Therapists will work across levels, targeting specific intervention for identified small groups with programs administered through multidisciplinary teams as they have before. Two new coordinator positions have been created and replace previous Level Coordinator positions: Emma Juleff as Teaching and Learning Coordinator and Jenni Machin as Therapy Coordinator. Emma and Jenni will oversee the academic and therapy programs respectively. Please speak with your class teacher in the first instance for any queries or concerns relating to the school program. For any finance or administration questions, please speak with Reception and Jodie or Heather will be able to direct your enquiry to the relevant staff member. Parent Information Session and Morning Tea On Tuesday 9th February there will be an information session in the school library at 9am, followed by a morning tea for parents. The format will be informal and an FAQ-style session with an opportunity for parents to meet. Please come along and bring a plate to share. Working Bee Please note the first Working Bee for 2016 will be Saturday 12th March from 8-10am. Thank you to those families who have already offered to attend. In recognition of the contribution by those of you who attend, you will receive a working bee credit of $100 to your fees account, with an adjustment visible on your next statement. If you are able to attend I look forward to seeing you there. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet other parents and contribute to our beautiful grounds.

CHI.L.D Association News

Become a Member of the CHI.L.D Association

All children are special and unique. They develop at different rates and many struggle with their learning, behaviour, social skills or communication. Living with a Language Disorder is challenging. Even the sim-plest task becomes difficult when you can hear what is being said, but you don’t understand and can’t respond appropriate-ly. Language disorders are not well known or recognised with-in our society, but up to 1 in 14 children and young people live with them everyday. Providing therapy, education and support services, the CHI.L.D. Association has enabled better outcomes for children and young people with a disability, for whom language is their primary disorder, for over 35 years. Our holistic, innovative and effective programs are delivered at The Glenleighden School, Let’s Talk Clinics and throughout regional and rural Queens-land. The demand for our services has never been higher and we continue to grow as we support more children and young people. By becoming a member you can change a child’s life. By sup-porting the work of our teachers, therapists and support staff you enable better outcomes for these children and young peo-ple. As a member you will receive invitations to special events, be kept updated with association news and have the opportunity to attend and vote at the 2016 AGM, Monday 21 March, 7pm at The Glenleighden School . For those renewing your membership, we thank you for your ongoing support of our important work. Please find attached the Membership Application/Renewal Form. Please return as per the instruction within the form. For more information about membership please speak with our staff members at The Glenleighden School, Let’s Talk or School Support Services.

Positive Behaviour Support Positive behaviour support is about understanding that all behaviour serves a function. For a child with a language disorder, this function is often communicating control over themselves, others, or a child’s environment when other forms of com-munication break down. Positive behaviour sup-port is used to facilitate desired behaviour at home, in the playground and in the classroom. Learning these behaviours are essential to a child’s development, independence and sense of self. At school we utilise the Schoolwide Positive Be-haviour Support (SWPBS) framework to support a suite of strategies to investigate problem behav-iours, explicitly teach desired behaviour and re-ward positive behaviour. The SWPBS framework helped develop our school values and these val-ues drive interventions to behaviour, teaching ex-pectations and reinforcing good choices. The SWPBS framework supports a child using three tiers of support: Tier 1 Universal Support - ensures consistency throughout the entire program, using positive re-gard and expectations, explicit teaching, pro-cessing time, a chance to practice and succeed, appropriate identified visual models, demonstra-tion, concrete support items and developmentally appropriate instructions. Assuming all these are in place. Statistics suggest that on average about 80% of children’s behaviour is supported through group instructions and universal expectations/values.

Tier 2 Targeted Intervention - on average, about 15% of children’s behaviour needs more tailored support (above and beyond the previously men-tioned supports). This could be to address any additional difficulties the child experiences when learning and performing appropriate behaviour, as well as identify any environmental, social or self-management barriers prevent them from demon-strating behaviour. An example of a tier 2 strategy could involve modifying the environment to suit their sensory needs, building a social story to ex-plain a routine, positive encouragement and sup-port when they attempt/complete a difficult task. Tier 3 Intense Intervention - on average, about 5% of children’s behaviour requires intense sup-port. This tier usually involves supporting a child by recruiting help from all those involved in sup-porting a child, including parents, allied health and medical professionals to specifically and thorough-ly investigate barriers to a child developing appro-priate behaviour and provide support needs that require significant and ongoing intervention. Positive Parenting Program - Triple P For supporting parents at home we utilise the Pos-itive Parenting Program (Triple P: Stepping Stones). Triple P is a well-researched and proven framework that helps support families in facilitating positive behaviour at home. This involves using specially crafted reading and planning resources to identify issues, plan realistic goals and track progress. Parent information sessions and evenings will be on offer for groups of parents interested in receiv-ing support and planning interventions in a safe group environment that understands behaviour needs and language issues. Triple P is also on offer through UQ on an individual and group basis. These modules and resources have also been used by staff at Glenleighden to increase under-standing, familiarize themselves with materials and hone behaviour support practices. Positive behaviour support practices have real

world benefits for typically developing children and

those with disabilities. Those supported through

positive behaviour strategies are more likely to

learn and adapt to new routines, have stronger

attachments and relationships with family mem-

bers, spend less time stressed, angry or worried

and will have a reduced risk of mental health is-

sues and aggression in adult-

hood.
