Good Afternoon Parents and Caregivers, As I mentioned a fortnight ago, it truly is a pleasure to be at Glendore Public School. Over the past fortnight we have had four wonderful community events, despite the overwhelming heat. I must thank my wonderful student and staff body for their comradery and to our parents and caregivers for coming together with us as a Glendore Team. Our first P&C Meeting: had a huge attendance of 25, where a range of issues were discussed. These included: enhancing cooling provision in the school; security and access to the school after hours; options for SRE, Ethics and Non-Scripture, uniform, review of the 2017 School Plan and generation of the 2018-2020 Plan. The next meeting for our P&C will be held on Monday, 6 th March. This will also be the 2016/2017 Annual General Meeting. Swimming Carnival: Despite the hot weather, we had a wonderful day at Wallsend Swimming Complex for our Annual Carnival. Thank you to Mrs Pirillo for her outstanding coordination. Please see her report later in our newsletter. I am pleased to confirm that in response to student, staff and community feedback, the 2018 Swimming Carnival will be moved to The Forum at Newcastle University. Weather has been taken into consideration for the timing of the booking. More information will come soon regarding timing of the 2018 event. Glendore Welcome Yarn: Thank you to Miss Doosey, Mr Dave Newham, our students and staff for welcoming our Aboriginal Community into the school for yesterday’s Welcome Yarn. It was pleasing to see so many of our community members attend to collaborate with our staff towards a common purpose – the improvement of outcomes for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. This was an especially significant occasion, given that on 13 th February, 2008, the then Prime Minister of Australia, Kevin Rudd made Australia’s Apology to the Stolen Generation - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3TZOGpG6cM. Please see photos taken by Miss Naden later in this newsletter. Students, staff, parents, caregivers and community members worked solidly to begin planning 2017 Personalised Learning Plans (PLPs). Plans which were not able to be started will be coordinated through Miss Doosey. 2017 Student Parliament Officially Inducted: This week, our 8 2017 Student Parliamentarians officially made their pledges to uphold the beliefs and rules of the school and to represent Glendore Public with pride and good spirit. I have included photos of their official induction, as the ‘Governor General of Glendore’ accepted their commissions.

The next meeting for our P&C will be held on Monday, 6th March.

School Payments and Fees: Can you please assist us with the smooth commencement of the 2017 Scholastic Year with the prompt payment of the school resource pack and the return of permission notes. As soon as these are returned, we can be up to ‘full speed’. Currently, there are quite a few payments due soon. Cash or POP (Parent Online Payment) payments are the preferred method of payment. POP payments can be done easily by accessing the Glendore Public School Website and clicking on the link “Make a payment” (as illustrated below) on the home page.

The only fields which need to be filled are your child’s name and your name. When you are issued a receipt number, please write it on the pink permission note and remember to send it into the office.

Resource Pack: Included in resource packs are: subscriptions to Reading Eggs/Express and Mathletics (Logins will follow), stationery and workbooks. Packs are opened immediately. Teachers store on behalf of each child their resources to be used in class throughout the year. Exercise books will come home at some stage (varied by class) to be covered. Spare copies of notes for students who have not yet returned their order are available at the office.

Our Local Enrolment Zone: Last newsletter, I included this zoning map to indicate where Glendore’s intake areas were bounded. I am pleased to confirm that all of the missing are of the Sanctuary Estate (Kekul St, Kural; Cres, Mitti St, Panorama Cl, Punnul St and Wattawan St) have been confirmed as part of Glendore Public School’s Local Zoning. Please contact me with any enquiries about enrolment at Glendore Public School. I have included a ‘Zoom-In’ map of the additional areas below. These also include the Snipe and Awabakal Drive/Bulbul Crescent extensions:

PSSA (Soccer/Football and Netball) Try-Outs: Next week, try-outs for the soccer and netball PSSA teams will begin. Miss Fox will be coaching netball and Mrs Boyce will be coaching the soccer teams. Mrs Boyce and Miss Fox will be taking the names of students interested in trying out on Monday, with Junior (Years 3 and 4) tryouts on Wednesday and Friday. Senior tryouts will be the following week.

School Opal Cards: Information has been previously sent home regarding the new School Opal Cards which come into effect in 2017. These cards replaced former bus/train passes. For further information please visit transportnsw.info/school-students or phone 131 500. All Opal Cards which had been correctly applied for last year should have arrived home in the mail for new students. Cards which have not will be issued at school for continuing students when they arrive at the school How to apply: Step 1: Complete the application at transportnsw.info/school-students

Step 2: Print, sign and date the completed application and send to school for endorsement Step 3: The school sends the endorsed application to Transport for NSW

E-Communication: Last newsletter, I advised that we will begin to provide advice about how you can stay in touch more with our wonderful school online. Recognising that all of our school community members have busy lives, we plan to roll out a range of opportunities to connect with us via your device and/or the web. Soon you will hear about our new app, enhanced website provision and also our Good News FB page.

We are upgrading our website for the download of permission/information notes. Spare copies of notes will be available at: http://www.glendore-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/activity-notes. Our plan is to have the following categories: General K-6, Arts & Culture, Sports, Early Stage One, Stage One, Stage Two and Stage Three. Parents should be able to more easily access notes over the next few weeks.

Glendore Swimming Carnival: On Monday 6th February our annual swimming carnival was held at Wallsend pool. Thank you to all of our parent helpers who assisted with time keeping and other important duties. Well done to all of our students who participated with skill and great sportsmanship in our events.

PSSA Zone Swimming Carnival: Notes for the upcoming PSSA Zone Crossroads swimming carnival have been distributed. The zone carnival will be held on Thursday 23rd February 2017 at Speers Point pool. Parents are responsible for the transport to and from the pool. All zone team members should have zone notes and $4.00 payable to the office by Monday 20th February. Good luck zone team! Points for the carnival have been tallied and announced at our assembly on Monday. The scores are;

1st place – Paterson with 169 points 2nd place – Hunter with 155 points 3rd place – Allyn with 114 points 4th place – Williams with 96 points

Clean Up Australia Day: Thank you to Mrs Eacott, who is coordinating Clean Up Australia Day. This activity will be on Friday 3rd March. Students will participate in activities that centre on recycling and the environment. The activity your child participates in will depend on what grade they are in. Stage 2 and Stage 3 students will be picking up rubbish. Could students please bring a plastic bag into school and gloves will be provided. An Information Note will be sent home to Stage 3 students in Week 5.

Walking Bus Coming Soon: The Friday morning walking bus will be returning to Glendore in Week 5 (24th Feb) with Ms Thomsen and Miss Cook this year. Please stay tuned for the start date! For those students new to the Walking Bus, we meet at the bus stop at Coles Fletcher from 8am and walk together to school at 8:15. All students K-6 are welcome!

Staffing Advice: As you will note in the ‘What’s On?’ sheet, Mrs Downing will be taking a short period of leave from 3rd March until 9th March. Her duties will be undertaken by Miss Lia Sikahele. I will be forming a merit selection panel for a classroom teacher position at the school tomorrow. It will be composed of representatives from our Parent Body, the Teaching Staff and the Muloobinbah LAECG and led by myself. I will advise the outcome in late-March.

Car Parking and School Gate: I am seeking your support in not using your personal vehicles to access the following areas of the school’s grounds. These include: Staff Car Park, Disabled Parking (unless holding an authorised RMS Disabled Parking Permit), entry to the top school gate and the top lane.

Medical/Asthma Note Update: Parents and Caregivers, whom have previously advised the school about either Asthma or Anaphylaxis as medical conditions will receive tomorrow an information/medical survey package which should be returned to the school (Admin) after consultation with your local doctor. Should your child have only recently been diagnosed with one/both of these conditions, could you please contact Mrs Probert, our School Administration Manager to obtain the relevant school medical planning paperwork.

New Outdoor Seating Arrives: I am reliably advised by Mrs Bate-Barnier that she, like “Big Kev’ is EXCITED. Today we received 11 large aluminium picnic tables for Stage 2-3 usage. Each table holds 18 students and will soon be provisioned with large outdoor picnic umbrellas for shading and student safety. We still have another 14 to be delivered across the school, which will together allow for passive recreation time and increased outdoor learning.

Year K-6 Assembly Awards: Tomorrow you will all receive a separate advice, which will list all of our Assembly Award winners for Week Three, Term One, 2017. It is pleasing to see 84 students being acknowledged across the school so early. This represents 16% of our entire student body. Well done kids. That’s obviously why you need a separate celebratory newsletter.

Children’s University (CU) – University of Newcastle: has started and Glendore Public School have been invited to join children across the Hunter and Central Coast to be a part of this exciting new education program. A CU presentation will be held on Wednesday, 22nd February for all Year 3-6 students in the School Hall (2:15-2:45pm). Parents, Caregivers and Community Members are invited to attend to hear more about this fantastic GPS initiative.

The concept of Children’s University (CU) is to award different levels to certification to students for learning that occurs out of classroom hours: before school, during lunch, after school and at events that will be scheduled in the school holidays. Children’s University helps to develop social skills and strengthen student’s aspirations and awareness of opportunities in their future, outside the normal school curriculum. Call 4921 8739 for information.

Children’s University will be arranging school holiday programs, strengthening school clubs and linking community organisations to schools to allow opportunities for children to access exciting new learning events linked with lifelong learning. If your child is involved in an activity and you would like to have the learning hours stamped in their passport. Please send contact details into the school’s CU contact and have a conversation about CU with your activity contact so they know about this fantastic program prior to us calling them. Find more information please view: http://childrensuniversity.com.au/about/. Thank you to Mrs White for her coordination of this great initiative.

Kindergarten – Starting School – Parent/Caregiver/Teacher Information Evening: We look forward to seeing all of our new Kindergarten parents and caregivers at our Information Meeting. Thank you to Mrs Dunn, Mrs Boyce, Miss Carroll, Mrs Eacott and Ms NAden for giving up their personal time to support transition into Glendore.

Special Religious Education (SRE), Special Ethics in Education (SEE/Ethics) and Non-Scripture: Last year, Glendore Public School was able to offer parents and caregivers the choice for their child to attend SRE and Non-Scripture. Scripture Programs offered were a Christian Ecumenical (Multi-Denominational) and Islamic service. I am seeking community input into whether parents and caregivers of students who have chosen Non-Scripture would be interested in the SEE-Primary Ethics Program, which runs at many other NSW Public Primary Schools. These lessons are taught by trained volunteers. I will talk about this at our next P&C Meeting and will send home an information sheet to you all. If you are interested in becoming a trained Ethics Teacher or in having your Non-Scripture Child attend Ethics, please indicate on the slip below.
