I recently read this quote from Henri Nouwen: “For Jesus, there are no countries to be conquered, no ideologies to be imposed, no people to be dominated. There are only children, women and men to be loved.” Tuesday, as I was eating lunch, I watched the pastor and some congregants of a Spanish speaking church in the Houston area rescuing people by boat. The English translation for the name of their church is “Power and Healing.” These Spanish/broken English speaking people made the power and healing of God very evident as they exposed themselves to many hazards to rescue folks who looked and sounded a lot like you and I. John Sunday’s Message Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:1-13 Message: “Rocks, Paper, Scissors” Tough as nails.” “Hard as a rock.” Those are metaphors for strength and sturdiness. God hardly ever seems to agree. Administrative Board meeting right after worship this Sunday to deal with charge conference materials. Staying Connected Joys:

Donna Morrison was happy the whole family was able to attend the baptism of their grandson last weekend.

Donna was happy they were able to contain the cancer of their 18 year old friend, Charlene by removing the kidney.

Janet Henry announced that they will be grandparents again. Jane is expecting and the baby is due in March.

Tonya Cross was happy that Sunday School for the children will resume at 9:30 next week. There will also be children’s church and nursery.

Thursday evening had a nice crowd for the nurse’s graduation ceremonies. Pastor John added that there are people out there who don’t know the Good News of Jesus Christ. Don Howland wanted to clarify it is our job to spread the word but not up to us to change someone.

The Circle of Grace meeting will be Tuesday evening this week at the church. Joe Blair announced that his grandson will be getting married next weekend. Marilyn Dague’s mother is 92 and her niece turned 16.

Concerns:

It was apparent at the nurse’s graduation that some people are not learning about the scriptures or attending church.

Ralph’s Strong’s mother had a stroke and is having difficulty communicating. She was at Reynold’s but is now back at Shadyside Care Center.

Tonya Cross has a knee replacement scheduled for September 5 and will be taking a while to recover. The church office will be closed and there will be no bulletin until she returns.

Debbie Chavanak asked to remember that we had a shooting in the area. Several members have family in the Texas area so remember then and all of

the people affected by the flooding. Sylvia’s brother is having surgery this week. Remember Joe Blair’s daughter in law. Judy Schlocchi just passed away, remember her family. Arley Crow’s asked for prayer for a friend who had lost their mother. Bill Wilburn just passed away, remember his family. Janet Hill was just diagnosed with cancer, Our deepest condolences to the family of Gary Nisperly who passed away on

Tuesday. Visitation is at Grisell’s Funeral Home Friday, September 1 between 1 and 4, Memorial Service is at 4. Please keep the family in prayer.

Other: Volunteers are needed to assist with the Jr. Youth. A clip board is being

passed around for signatures. The choir is looking for voices. They will be having a picnic Wednesday

evening at 6:30 at the home of Ed and Janet Grose. The NOW Committee and the Nominations Committee are both to meet right

after worship for brief meetings. Those who are on the committee for “Reaching New People will meet tonight

at 7:00 in the Fellowship Hall. Cathy Gellner is arranging for a Yoga Class to be offered soon. If you are

interested in participating, please contact Cathy or the church office. The annual church picnic will be Sunday, September 10 at Glen Dale Park.

The choir had their annual covered dish dinner at the home of Ed and Janet Grose on Wednesday, August 30 at 6:30 p.m. There was plenty of food and there was an abundance of chocolate desserts. After the feast, the choir did their best to hold a rehearsal. All are invited to join this happy group. Practices are held on Wednesday evening at 6:30. Below are some pics of the event.

Please remember those who are unable to worship with us on Sunday morning by visiting, calling or sending a card.

Michelle Lucarelli – HOC Guest Speaker

On Sunday September 17 Michelle Lucarelli,

will be our guest speaker. She will talk about the

new youth center the HOC is building.

The HOC announced in June the plans to

construct a youth center adjacent to our current

facility. Since the announcement, several people

have asked questions about the project.

Why are you building a center?

Do we need this? The needs of our community

and the growing ministry was explored and, it

was determined that the ministry the center

would provide working with children and youth

justified the expansion. .

What is in the center?

The youth center is 8,500 square feet and will

include, on the main floor a 1/2 court gym and a

gathering area. On the floor above the gathering

area will be an additional meeting area allowing

us to have more than one event at a time. The

gym floor will allow us to do a wide range of

activities that will include basketball, volleyball,

dance, drama and exercise/yoga programs.

Please visit our webpage at

www.houseofthecarpenter.com and click on the

youth center, the drawings are available there.

What is the cost?

The actual cost of the facility is $1,525,000. The

entire project which includes the cost of property

acquisition, demolition of property, architectural

and engineering fees, geotechnical costs,

surveys, permits and equipment to help support

the new ministry will make the project

$1,995,000. While a project of this size may

seem overwhelming, the HOC already has on

hand or committed nearly $1,100,000. The HOC

has begun raising money locally. You can

donate to the center by mailing contributions or

directly through the webpage.

When will this be built?

The Board of Directors for the HOC is a very

responsible leadership team. The goal is to

begin construction early in 2018 but this will only

begin if more than $1.5 million is committed. The

HOC does not intend to carry a mortgage for this

property. The HOC will be posting information to

keep everyone updated on the progress of the

center. Follow us on our webpage or on
