Julia Celeste SmithJulia is a sixteen year old lady shewas the first girlfriend of Rizal.Rizal was checking their tree yardof atis, balimbing, macopa, santol,and tampoy this tree yard end tothe river side or river shore andRizal was only 15 when he firstsaw Julia by accident in a rivernamed Dampalit in Los Baños afew days after Easter in 1877. Shewas wearing a red wraparoundskirt. Julia could not catch thebutterfly she was chasing. Rizalever gallant, caught two, Trillanawrote. Heart beating with strangefondness, Rizal offered her thebutterflies and she laughed withinnocent pleasure. He wasinstantly attracted to her. But forlack of subsequent contact, Rizaleventually forgot Julia CelesteSmith.

2. Segunda Katigbak

Segunda is a pretty fourteen year old ladyBataqueña from Lipa was the secondgirlfriend of Rizal. She was rather short, witheyes that were eloquent, ardent at times,languid at others, rosy – cheeked, with anenchanting and provocative smile thatrevealed very beautiful teeth, and the air ofa sylph; her entire self diffused a mysteriouscharm. One Sunday Rizal visited hismaternal grandmother who lived in Trozo,Manila. He was accompanied by his friendMariano Katigbak. His old grandmother wasfriend of the Katigbak Family from Lipa.When he reached his grandmother’s house,he saw other guest. One of whom was anattractive girl, who was mysteriously causedhis heart to palpitate with strange ecstasy.She was the sister of his friend Mariano, andher name was Segunda. Rizal came toknow Segunda more intimate during hisweekly visits at La Concordia College,where his sister Olimpia was a boardingstudent. Olimpia was a friend of Segunda. Itwas apparent that Rizal and Segunda lovedeach other. Their was indeed “Love At FirstSight.” But It was hopeless since the verybeginning because Segunda was engagedto Manuel Luz.

3. Jacinta Ibardo Laza

Jacinta is a professor from PakilLaguna the third girlfriend of Rizal.Rizal shortly after losing SegundaKatigbak, he paid court to a youngwoman in Pakil, Laguna. Rizalcalled Jacinta Ibardo Laza Miss L.Rizal describe Miss L. a fair withseductive and attractive eyes. Aftervisiting her in her house severaltimes for a tutor lesson in thesubject Rhetoric and Poetry, hesuddenly stopped his wooming, andthe romance died a natural death.Rizal gave reason why the romancewith Miss L. died because 1. thesweet memory of Segunda was stillin his heart, and 2. his fatherobjected to the romance with MissL. because she is the professor ofRizal.

4. Leonor “Orang” Valenzuela

Leonor Valenzuela the fourth girlfriend ofRizal. Several months after during Rizalsophomore year at the University Of SantoTomas, he boarded in the house of DoñaConcha Leyva in Intramuros. The next doorneighbors of Doña Concha were CapitanJuan and Capitana Sanday Valenzuela,parents of a charming girl named Leonor.Rizal a medical student from Calamba, wasa welcomed visitor in the Valenzuela home,where he was the life of the social partiesbecause of his clever sleight of hand tricks.He courted Leonor Valenzuela, who was atall girl. Almost as tall as Jose himself, andhad a regal bearing. He sent her love noteswritten in invisible ink. This ink consisted ofcommon table salt and water. It left no traceon the paper. Rizal , who knew hischemistry, taught Orang (pet name ofLeonor Valenzuela) the secret of readingany note written in the invisible ink byheating it over a candle or lamp so that theletter may appear. But as with Segunda, hestopped short of proposing marriage toOrang.

5. Leonor “Luntian” Rivera

Leonor Rivera the fifth girlfriend ofRizal. Rizal next romance, whichmodern writers have glamorized, waswith another Leonor. – Leonor Rivera(Luntian pet name Leonor Rivera) hiscousin from Camiling. In 1879, at thestart of his junior year at the university,he lived in “Casa Tomasina” aboarding house managed by hisUncle, Antonio Rivera, at No. 6 CalleSanto Tomas, Intramuros. His landlord Uncle has a pretty daughter,Leonor, a student at La ConcordiaCollege, where Soledad(Rizal’syoungest sister) was then studying.Leonor, born in Camiling, Tarlac, OnApril 11, 1867, was a frail, beautifulgirl, tender as a budding flower withkindly wistful eyes. Between Jose andLeonor sprang a tenderly beautifulromance. They became engaged. Inher letters to Rizal, Leonor signed hername as “Luntian” in order tocamouflage their intimate relationshipfrom their parents and friends.

6. Consuelo Ortiga Y. Rey

Consuelo the sixth girlfriend ofRizal. Consuelo Ortiga Y. Rey she isthe prettiest of Don Pablo Ortiga’stwo daughters, in Madrid. She fell inlove with him after only a few dates.He dedicated to her “A la SenoritaC.O. y R,” which became one of hisbest poems. The Ortiga's residencein Madrid was frequented by Rizaland his compatriots. He probablyfell in love with her and Consueloapparently asked him for romanticverses. He suddenly backed outbefore the relationship turned into aserious romance, because hewanted to remain loyal to LeonorRivera and he did not want todestroy hid friendship with Eduardode Lete who was madly in love withConsuelo

7. Gertrude “Gettie” Beckette

Gertrude the seventh girlfriend ofRizal. While Rizal was in Londonannotating the Sucesos de las IslasFilipinas, he boarded in the house ofthe Beckett family, within walkingdistance of the British Museum.Gertrude, a blue-eyed and buxomgirl was the oldest of the threeBeckett daughters. She fell in lovewith Rizal. Tottie helped him in hispainting and sculpture. But Rizalsuddenly left London for Paris toavoid Gertrude, who was seriouslyin love with him. Before leavingLondon, he was able to finish thegroup carving of the Beckett sisters.He gave the group carving toGertrude as a sign of their briefrelationship.

8. Nellie Boustead

Nellie the eight girlfriend of Rizal. Rizalhaving lost Leonor Rivera, entertained thethought of courting other ladies. While aguest of the Boustead family at theirresidence in the resort city of Biarritz, hehad befriended the two pretty daughters ofhis host, Eduardo Boustead. Rizal used tofence with the sisters at the studio of JuanLuna. Antonio Luna, Juan's brother andalso a frequent visitor of the Boustead's,courted Nellie but she was deeplyinfatuated with Rizal. In a party held byFilipinos in Madrid, a drunken Antonio Lunauttered unsavory remarks against NellieBoustead. This prompted Rizal to challengeLuna into a duel. Fortunately, Lunaapologized to Rizal, thus averting tragedyfor the compatriots' heir love affairunfortunately did not end in marriage. Itfailed because Rizal refused to beconverted to the Protestant faith, as Nelliedemanded and Nellie's mother did not likea physician without enough paying clienteleto be a son-in-law. The lovers, however,parted as good friends when Rizal leftEurope.

9. Seiko “O Sei San” Usui

Seiko the nineth girlfriend ofRizal. On his second trip toEurope in 1888,Rizal stoppedby Japan where he met SeikoUsui a lovely and intelligentdaughter of a samurai. If all hewanted was a good life, hewould have married O Sei Sanand stayed on in Japanbecause a Spanish legationthere was offering him a well-paying job. But he left Japanbecause he thought he wasdestined for a greater task inthe Philippines and had to gohome. In a letter, he said of her:“O Sei San”, O Sei San,sayonara. No woman, like you,has ever loved me

10. Suzanne Jacoby

Suzanne the tenth girlfriend ofRizal. In 1890, Rizal moved toBrussels because of the highcost of living in Paris. InBrussels, he lived in theboarding house of the twoJacoby sisters. In time, they felldeeply in love with each other.Suzanne cried when Rizal leftBrussels and wrote him when hewas in Madrid.

Pastora Necessario the eleventhgirlfriend of Rizal. PastoranNecessario Carreon is a ladyfrom Dapitan he is Pastor on achurch on Dapitan after SuzanneJacoby. Rizal fell deeply in love inthis girl from Dapitan but thisrelationship not last becauseNecessario is a Pastora she wantto gave his full love on hischurch.

12. Josephine Leopaldine Bracken

Josephine the twelveth girlfriend of Rizal. InDapitan, Zamboanga, In early February 1895,Rizal met an 18-year-old petite Irish girl, withbold blue eyes, brown hair and a happydisposition. She was Josephine Bracken, theadopted daughter of George Taufer who hadtraveled to Dapitan from Hong Kong to have hiseye treated by Rizal. Rizal was immediatelyattracted to Josephine. He called her “dulceestranjera,” or sweet foreigner. The lonelinessand boredom of exile may have taken its toll ashe found himself falling in love quite easily.However, Rizal’s sisters suspected Josephineof being a spy for the Spanish authorities and athreat to his security. Rizal asked Josephine tomarry him, but she was not yet ready to make adecision due to her responsibility to the blindTaufer. Since Taufer's blindness wasuntreatable, he left for Hon Kong onMarch1895. Josephine stayed with Rizal’sfamily in Manila. Upon her return to Dapitan,Rizal tried to arrange with Father AntonioObach for their marriage. However, the priestwanted a retraction as a precondition beforemarrying them. Rizal upon the advice of hisfamily and friends and with Josephine's consenttook her as his wife even without the Churchblessings. Josephine later gives birthprematurely to a still born baby, a result ofsome incidence, which might have shocked orfrightened her.
