President’s Message
As we enjoy Independence Day, I send this abbreviated clause from the
Declaration of Independence of 1776:
"All men are endorsed with certain Rights, among these are Life, Liberty, and the
Pursuit of Happiness.”
Let us all remember this, have a safe and happy Fourth.

Jack & Penny’s Chrysler
McPherson College C.A.R.S. Show
On May 3, 2019 Penny and I headed to Lawrence, Kansas to do our duty directing traffic and taking
money for swap meet parking. We then headed straight for the McPherson College C.A.R.S. (student)
Auto Club show in McPherson Kansas. It was a wonderful day and we enjoyed driving our
1955 Chrysler 300 on its last trip before restoration begins.
It was a beautiful partly sunny day for a drive across central Kansas through the edge of the Flint Hills
and the tall grass prairie. We intentionally took the 2-lane highways off the beaten path in our route plan
to McPherson.
The show weekend begins on Friday night with a cruise in downtown. Three city blocks of Main Street
are blocked off and cars from the surrounding area, student’s cars, show cars and many unusual creations
show up. People wandered through the cars in period costumes or what might have been an attempt at
period costumes.
The show happens only on Saturday which is also unfortunately the big day for the Lawrence swap meet,
I wonder what kind of conflict this causes for both events to have 2 major collector car events within 100
miles of each other on the same day? The day of the show was foggy in the morning, but the fog burned
off early in the day and it was a spectacular sunny day with temperatures in the 70s.

Hundreds of cars graced the grass fields in the central quad of the campus with cars ranging from the
1900’s to the 1990’s and everything in between. Of particular note was a Dietrich bodied Franklin that
was shown by a member of the long-time owner's family. It was a spectacular car with a spectacular res-
toration.
Other highlights included a
fantastic, highly optioned
1955 Mercury convert as well
as the feature cars around the
gazebo at the center of the
show field.

NOVI Indy Car
All through the show the jazz band and the orchestra from McPherson college played songs and dance
music. The majority of the musicians are enrolled in the auto restoration program. When it came time for
the national anthem the band performed it flawlessly and the vocals were provided by the show’s guest
of honor, noted car collector and appraiser Donald Osborne. Another noteworthy attendee at the show
was Tom Cotter. Many of you may know from the Hagerty insurance video series Barn Finds. Tom was
there with his cobra roadster, but he was also showing a recent restoration and modification project from
a school in Texas.
There was also a speech given at a banquet by
Donald Osborne, which we did not attend but
we did see Mr. Osborne several times during
the day at the show on Saturday. By the way,
as proof that Penny is really a “car guy” at
heart, the show on Saturday was also our 45th
wedding anniversary.

Sunday morning on our way home we decided to take a different 2-lane
route up through Abilene and visit the Eisenhower museum and library.
We also stopped by an antique store to check out what central Kansas
antique stores have to offer. We did see one interesting artifact. How
many of you remember these “think” signs and what their purpose was?
We also stopped at the Brookville Hotel in Abilene for a fried chicken
dinner and then headed home on the Interstate (boring) then jumped
back on the 2-lane at Topeka.
I plan on writing a letter to the McPherson Car Club and mention to
them that we enjoy their show a great deal and it already attracts a great
number of interesting cars and interesting people. But it is unfortunate
that the show occurs on the same weekend as the swap meet in Law-
rence. As you know the swap meet in Lawrence has been going on for
more than a half a century and I wonder if maybe the McPherson show
could move their date by a week and avoid the conflict.
We had a great time and plan on attending again in the future including swinging by the old Swedish
town of Lindsborg to see the 100-year-old flower mail run on the same weekend.

AACA Annual Grand National Preparation
Getting ready for the Annual Grand National can be a daunting task. The award process on the road to
Grand National is interesting: There are three Junior award classes: 3rd, 2nd, 1st. You must secure a 1st
Junior to move to Senior judging. Once you receive Senior status (only one class) you move to Grand
National, judging where again there are 3rd 2nd, 1st place awards. When you secure a 1st Grand Na-
tional Award, you can then move to Senior Grand National Award—the highest trophy awarded. After
that you receive brass stamps to add to your trophy for maintaining your car’s restoration.
The preparation, time and labor of love that goes into Grand National readiness is a story in itself. Here
is the story of one little 1940 Plymouth’s journey.
2014: Cedar Rapids, Iowa AACA Regional
Bonnie Johnson attends Judging School. She is shocked by all the deductions her car could receive. She
decides to keep her Plymouth in the trailer. Herb Oakes, National AACA President (since deceased) and
Hulon McCraw, Vice-President Class Judging, urge her to enter. She does and the result is a 2nd Junior.
2017: The Johnsons ask Radfords (AACA Judges for many years) to pre-judge the Plymouth. David
Johnson (son) corrects the deduction list and Dennis Roberts, pulls the engine and removed, sandblasted
and painted everything from the radiator to the rear bumper.
2017: Auburn, Indiana AACA Regional
Plymouth wins 1st Junior. Bonnie was so excited she left her purse in the banquet room but, of course,
she remembered her trophy. Rumor is the trophy slept between Bonnie and Bill that night.
2017: Bettendorf, Iowa AACA Regional (yes, 2 Regionals in one year—now that’s commitment)
Hurray! Plymouth wins its Senior AACA Award
2019: Auburn, Indiana Annual Grand National
… and now the rest of the story.

1958 Austin Healey on the show field
Bob Ehringer & friend, Ruth Blick
On Thursday May 30, 2019, Bill/Bonnie Johnson with Jerry Rau driving, Dennis/Linda Radford, Ron/
Sarah Jury and son headed to Auburn. Jerry and Dennis checked to see that I-70 was clear and deter-
mined we could make the trip in just under 10 hours. Since Roscoe was picking up friends in St. Joseph,
he decided to take Highway 36. With over 400 Missouri high-water road closures and GPS clueless
about the closures, Roscoe and friends toured Iowa and Illinois, making the trip in 16 hours. Their saga
was hilarious. We had some good laughs at Roscoe’s expense.
Friday was registration. We had our choice of things to do right on/near the show field. With 361 entries,
every row was a new adventure. Next to the show field RM Auction was a fun spot to drop in to see cars
being auctioned. The huge swap meet was most interesting.
We were all thrilled that all 16 Zenith cars were on display. So what is a
a Zenith car? Each year a special National judging team attends every
AACA show during the season. Out of the 3,300 cars, the National
team choose 2 cars from each show and then narrow it down to the 16
best restorations of the year. The team then chooses the number one
Zenith winner. Friday afternoon at Auburn the winner was announced.
The top Zenith was awarded to a 1931 Buick 8-94 Sport Roadster. We
all agreed picking the winner was quite a task.

Friday everyone landed at Bonnie and Bill’s hotel room for socializing That evening we made a pack
that what ever happened, we would celebrate Saturday night. Saturday was hot, humid with a good
chance of rain. However, the rain held off and the humidity didn’t spoil our good time or help our nerv-
ous excitement.
Saturday night at the RM Auction barn, the banquet
was a barbeque dinner (not our hometown barbeque)
so some of us opted for the Radford’s recommenda-
tion - Sandra D’s family owned Italian restaurant.
Sandra manages the restaurant and her husband does
the cooking.
Momma Mia delizioso!!!
After dinner, we headed back to the auction barn for the award presentation.

Church of the Resurrection Car Show 2019
In the wee hours of Saturday morning June 22nd the rains came. However, the skies cleared by 9:00
o'clock and the Church of the Resurrection car show went on as scheduled. Eight hardy members braved
the elements of the ten MA-AACA members that had registered for the COR show. In fact, late in the
day as the clouds cleared completely it got very warm and very humid. Those that showed their cars in-
cluded Jerry Cygan, Karl Roscoe, Paul Williamson, Tom Webush, Jack and Jane King, Barry Herbert,
Gary Crispin and Jack Boyle plus a mystery Studebaker pick-up.

Much of the day was spent discussing the world's problems including old cars with those in attendance.
We also discussed at length the best pork tenderloin in KC – with no clear winner although Jack and Gary
went on a fact-finding mission later in the day.
Those present passed out membership applications and free copies of the AACA Antique Automobile
magazine to prospective members throughout the day.
The report on the awards presentation for MA-AACA participants will be short and sweet as none of our
cars exhibited signed up to be judged – so none of them won. What a surprise.
All-in-all it was a nice day with nice people, nice cars and to those that didn't make it we understand how
daunting the weather can be and changes from one part of KC to another.
We hope to see you all at the WW1 show on July 21st.

Hi Members—well I am still working on the survey. It will be a short survey that is why it is taking me
longer than expected. Please watch for it. Thanks for your patience Martie Kernodle
Classic Motorsports magazine did a comparison of spray detailers. I am sure we all have our favorites.
Can you guess which spray detailers were the top three? Well here they are:
Griot’s Garage Speed Shine - best for price and availability
Available in most auto parts stores in addition to Griot’s online shop and print catalog.
Qualities: Now in a clear bottle so it’s easier to see how much product remains. It has a pleasant, clean smell–
maybe cherry.
Cleaning: Cleaned well, leaving behind a smooth finish. Clearly the glossiest detailer we tested.
Who’s Magic Solution - available on line Sold in a white, generic bottle, this is not a flashy product. Sales are handled through their website.
Qualities: No scent at all. Sprays on with a waxy feel.
Cleaning: Superior gloss with some scratch-filling quality. The most surprising product of our test.
Meguiar’s Ultimate Quik Detailer Mist & Wipe - a little bit more expensive
The old standard in the maroon bottle.
Qualities: Blue liquid with a bubblegum scent.
Cleaning: Worked well, leaving an average shine. Harmless. Average gloss.
REMINDER: Membership for National and Local AACA, beginning June 1 is 1/2 price —$20 for Na-
tional and $12.50 for local dues This is a great time to get friends/acquaintances involved in AACA.
October 1 - December 31 is full cost ($40/$25), but this includes the following year. Please remember that 1st
time members who are Veterans get National & Local dues paid the first year.
