The Genealogy of ScienceThe Genealogy of Science
By: Brenda Harris
Teacher Name : Brenda Harris
Grade Level : 6 – 12
Subject Area: All Science Subject AreasStandard(s):All science standards from grades 6 – 12
Purpose of PowerPoint Lesson:The purpose of this interactive lesson is to familiarize students with the various fields of science and that when one studies life science, earth science, and/or physical science they are actually learning about several different sciences all at once and not just an isolated field of science.
The Branches of ScienceThe Branches of Science
Life Sciences
PhysicalSciences
Earth Sciences
Life ScienceLife Science
• The Life Sciences The Life Sciences study all aspects of study all aspects of living organisms.living organisms.
• This field can be This field can be divided into five divided into five distinct disciplines.distinct disciplines.
• Anatomy
• Biology
• Ecology
• Genetics
• Physiology
Anatomy
• Anatomy studies the structures that make up living organisms. Human Heart
Chicken Heart
Biology
• Biology is the study of living things and encompasses large categories of sub-levels that can be separated and studied as individual sciences.
• Botany
• Microbiology
• Zoology
Botany
• Botany is the study of plants.
• Plants are the foundation for all other living things on the planet.
• Without plants, life as we know it would not exist.
Microbiology
• Microbiology studies the organisms and structures that cannot be seen by the naked eye.
• They require a microscope to view them.
• Fields of study under this category include:– Bacteriology– Virology
Zoology
• Zoology is the study of animals.
• The field can be broken down into many other branches including:– Ichthyology – the study
of fishes– Herpetology – the study
of reptiles
Ecology• Ecology is the study of
all living and non-living things in an ecosystem and how they interact.
• Ecosystems include:
– Deserts
– Rainforests
– Tundra
– Grasslands
Genetics
• Genetics studies DNA and genes and how characteristics are passed from one generation to the next.
• DNA fingerprinting is the most well known technique in this field as it appears on many television shows.
Physiology
• Physiology is closely linked with anatomy.
• It studies the way the structures work in an organism.
Earth Sciences
• The Earth Sciences deal with any science that has its basis in studying aspects of the earth itself.
• These are typically geared toward sciences not involving living organisms.
• Astronomy• Geology• Meteorology• Oceanography• Paleontology
Astronomy
• Astronomy is the study of space and things not from the earth itself.
• NASA is the United States governmental agency dedicated to exploring the vastness outside our atmosphere.
Geology
• Geology studies the formations found on Earth.
• The rocks and minerals found in abundance on Earth are examined in this science field.
• Earthquakes and volcanoes are studied as well.
Meteorology
• Meteorology studies the weather patterns around the world.
• Typical weather phenomena include:
– Hurricanes
– Tornadoes
– Floods
Oceanography
• The study of oceanography is a science that deals with all aspects of the oceans.
• This includes:– Tides– Currents– Waves
The blue indicates low tides and the red indicates high tides.
Paleontology
• Paleontology studies the fossils of once living organisms.
• The most well known fossils include:– Dinosaurs– Plants– Sea organisms (such
as shellfish)
Physical Sciences• The Physical Sciences
include the final two branches of science.
• This area involves areas dealing with non-living things just as Earth Science does.
• Do not confuse this with the Earth Sciences as they study different components of non-living things.
• Chemistry• Physics
Chemistry
• Chemistry involves the study of atoms and their interaction with one another to create compounds.
• There are two basic fields of chemistry:– Organic– Inorganic
Physics
• Physics studies the behavior of matter and energy.
• Physicists were responsible for the creation of the atomic bomb.
