THE GATHERINGIntroit

Come down, O Love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardour glowing;O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing.

O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming;and let thy glorious lightshine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming.

Let holy charitymine outward vesture be, and lowliness become mine inner clothing;true lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o’er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing.

And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling;for none can guess its grace, till he become the place wherein the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling.

Words: Bianco da Siena (d 1434) Music: Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872–1958)

All Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, by thought, word and deed, against thy divine majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. THE LITURGY OF THE WORDFirst Reading Exodus 12. 1-4,11-14

Read by Leslie Howard

The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, “This month shall be for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you.  Tell all the congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month they shall take every man a lamb according to their fathers’ houses, a lamb for a household;  and if the household is too small for a lamb, then a man and his neighbour next to his house shall take according to the number of persons; according to what each can eat you shall make your count for the lamb.In this manner you shall eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste. It is the LORD’s passover.  For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will smite all the first-born in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the LORD.  The blood shall be a sign for you, upon the houses where you are; and when I see the

blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall fall upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. “This day shall be for you a memorial day, and you shall keep it as a feast to the LORD; throughout your generations you shall observe it as an ordinance for ever.”This is the word of the Lord.

All Thanks be to God.

Second Reading 1 Corinthians 11. 23-26Read by Susan Blackall

For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”  In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”  For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. This is the word of the Lord.

All Thanks be to God.

Gospel Hear the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to John

All Glory be to thee, O Lord.

Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. And during supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to

betray him,  Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, rose from supper, laid aside his garments, and girded himself with a towel.  Then he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded. He came to Simon Peter; and Peter said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?”  Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not know now, but afterward you will understand.”  Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part in me.”  Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!”  Jesus said to him, “He who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but he is clean all over; and you are clean, but not every one of you.”  For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “You are not all clean.” When he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am.  If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.  For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.  Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him.  If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

Jesus said, “Now is the Son of man glorified, and in him God is glorified; if God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once.  Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’  A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.  By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”This is the Gospel of the Lord.

All Praise be to thee, O Christ.

For all thy Church, O Lord, we intercede; make thou our sad divisions soon to cease;draw us the nearer each to each, we plead, by drawing all to thee, O Prince of Peace:thus may we all one Bread, one Body be,one through this Sacrament of unity. We pray thee too for wanderers from thy fold; O bring them back, good Shepherd of the sheep, back to the faith which saints believed of old, back to the Church which still that faith doth keep:soon may we all one Bread, one Body be,one through this Sacrament of unity. So, Lord, at length when sacraments shall cease, may we be one with all thy Church above, one with thy saints in one unbroken peace, one with thy saints in one unbounded love:more blessèd still, in peace and love to beone with the Trinity in Unity.

Words: William Turton (1856–1938) Tune: SONG 1 (NEH 302)

these gifts of bread and winemay be to us his body and his blood;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee,

he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;do this in remembrance of me.Likewise, after supperhe took the cup

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of

the world, grant us thy peace.

Motet It is a thing most wonderful, almost too wonderful to be,that God's own Son should come from heaven, and die to save a child like me.

And yet I know that it is true:he chose a poor and humble lot,and wept, and toiled, and mourned, and died, for love of those who loved him not.

I sometimes think about the cross, and shut my eyes, and try to seethe cruel nails and crown of thornsand Jesus crucified for me.

But even could I see him die,I could but see a little partof that great love, which, like a fire,is always burning in his heart.

And yet I want to love thee, Lord;O light the flame within my heart, and I will love thee more and more, until I see thee as thou art.

THE TRIDUUM

This evening’s service is a particularly special service of Holy Communion. It is our point of entry into the three most sacred days of the Church’s year (The ‘Triduum’). In these days we recall the events of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the events through which God has redeemed the world. In our readings, music and liturgical and personal observance, we recount the story of Jesus’ final hours, his last supper, the agony in the garden, the trial and crucifixion, the silence of the tomb, and finally the triumph of resurrection on Easter Sunday morning.
