Dear Girl Scouts,

As we embark on a new year together, I am excited for the friendships, adventures and possibilities ahead. 2020 has shown that, as a Movement and as individuals, we are capable of great resilience, kindness and innovation. In fact, now more than ever, we are learning the importance of innovative thinking, problem solving and creativity. From expanding their horizons outdoors to expressing their individuality in the arts to reaching their goals in entrepreneurship, we’re offering girls a variety of

opportunities to develop these skills while pursuing their interests and forging their own paths.

Our hope is that this program guide will not only give you the inspiration you need to plan an exciting spring, but also show your girls the universe of potential they can unlock in one of our over 160 STEM programs.

In a study done by the Girl Scout Research Institute, we learn that girls and boys do not differ in their math and science abilities but do differ in their interest and confidence in STEM subjects. In fact, as early as second grade, youth agree that “math is for boys, not girls.” As Girl Scouts, we understand that there is no field, subject or skill in which girls cannot succeed, excel and lead. We also know that changing our communities starts with us. As your girls explore the world of STEM, share their knowledge with their friends and develop into the innovators, engineers and go-getters of tomorrow, we look forward to seeing the STEM gender gap diminish and eventually disappear. I’m thrilled to join all of you on this adventure and can’t wait to see the future we build together!

In here you’ll find information about programs designed for girls, families and adults. We offer opportunities across North Florida, from Jacksonville to Pensacola and everywhere in between!

Let girls take the lead! Help them find the experiences that are just right for them.

Download the guide and share it with parents and guardians!

Register for events at girlscouts-gateway.org/events. You can see more details about all the events, programs and training opportunities, then sign up! Important note: You must register for events to attend, unless otherwise noted. If you need assistance with the registration process, call us at (877) 764-5237.

Attend events and programs! Girls can attend events as a troop, on their own, with parents and with their whole families. You’ll see which events are open to different groups throughout the guide.

Remember: Girl Scouts is about progression! If your Junior sees a program she’d love but it’s only available to Seniors and Ambassadors, remind her that if she sticks with Girl Scouting, she’ll be able to do that program eventually — and then some!

Follow the adventures of Cy, Annie and Armstrong (Cy’s dog), as they embark upon an unexpected journey into space! The three are whisked into space by a wise-cracking spaceship named Halley. It’s off to the moon for a little exploring, followed by a visit to the sun. What wonders will they discover? Will they make it back to Earth? Join us to find out!

Animal Habitats with the Jacksonville ZooJ March 27Jacksonville Zoo $30/Girl Scout, $20/adultGirl Scout Juniors can work toward your Animal Habitats badge with our friends at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. Visit the zoo to meet the animals, get creative with a special project, and take a behind-the-scenes tour. After the workshop, explore the zoo with your new knowledge of animal habitats! You will receive a certificate at the end of the workshop that shows what you completed and what you will need to complete at home to receive your badge. Program cost includes zoo admission.

Animal Habitats with Tree Hill Nature CenterJ Feb. 13Tree Hill Nature Center, JacksonvilleCost: $10/Girl Scout, $8/adultJoin Tree Hill Nature Center and discover the ins and outs of where animals live, observe animal habitats, and explore how to protect their living spaces! Participants are welcome to explore the Tree Hill Nature Center after the conclusion of the program. This program meets badge requirements for steps 1, 2, 4 and 5 for the Junior Animal Habitats badge.

Aquatics Weekend 1 & 2 – Archery JCSA May 7-9, May 14-16 Camp Kateri, Hawthorne Cost: $40/girl, $40/adult Spend the weekend aiming for the target! Use a bow and arrow as you learn proper technique, play games and try tricks of the trade. On the final day of camp, you’ll get to test your skills by participating in a tournament to earn the Archery training strip.

Aquatics Weekend 1 & 2 – Aquatic Leader Aid CSA May 7 – 9, May 14-16 Camp Kateri, Hawthorne Cost: $25/girl Gain confidence in your aquatic and leadership skills as you share your knowledge with younger Girl Scouts! An assessment of skill level and proficiency each weekend allows ALAs to progress into an assistant instructor role. Girls will progress through this leadership experience at their own pace, with the guidance and support of aquatics instructors. Expect to register for this event multiple times to enhance your leadership and small craft skills! Prerequisite: PA Training and completion of at least five Aquatics strips.

Aquatics Weekend 1 & 2 - Canoe 1 JCSA May 7- 9, May 14-16 Camp Kateri, Hawthorne

Cost: $40/girl, $40/adult Have fun learning basic canoe strokes and fundamentals of canoe safety, including how to get in and out and how to handle a capsized canoe. Enjoy beautiful Hankley Lake while learning basic canoe skills and play Canoe Tag!

Aquatics Weekend 1 & 2- Canoe 2 JCSA May 7- 9, May 14-16 Camp Kateri, Hawthorne Cost: $40/girl, $40/adult Come back for round two as you become proficient in paddling strokes and maneuvers you learned in Canoeing 1 (Intro to Canoeing), then learn new strokes and sweeps to strengthen your skills. Eat lunch on the lake in your canoe and take a nice refreshing swim in Hankley Lake! Pre-requisite: Canoeing 1 (Intro to Canoeing).

Aquatics Weekend 1 & 2 - Canoe 3 CSA May 7-9 & 14-16 Camp Kateri, Hawthorne Cost: $70/girl, $70/adult BOTH WEEKENDS ARE REQUIRED. Prepare for a day trip down a river by practicing new canoeing strokes and deep-water entry maneuvers! Refine your skills, then enjoy a day trip to a river during the second weekend! Prerequisite: Canoeing 2 (Beginning Canoeing).

Aquatics Weekend 1 & 2 - Kayak 1 CSA May 7-9, May 14-16 Camp Kateri, Hawthorne Cost: $40/girl, $40/adult Learn basic kayaking strokes and safety essentials including how to steady a kayak, how to get in and out of a kayak and how to wet exit a kayak. Join in the fun as you take a tour of McCarthy Lake and find out what Dead Fish Polo is all about!

Take your kayak skills to the next level during this two-weekend course. Refine your skills, then take a day trip to a river during the second weekend! Prerequisite: Kayak 1 (Beginning Kayaking).

Aquatics Weekend 2 - Outdoor Journey B May 14-16 Camp Kateri, Hawthorne Cost: $40/girl, $40/adult Spend the weekend with us at Aquatics! The Brownie Outdoor Journey will cover the First Aid, Hiking and Cabin Camper Badges! We will make first aid kits, hike around the camp to check out all the great aquatics activities the girls can look forward to when they are Juniors, make trail mix, and even bake a sweet treat over open fire.

Aquatics Weekend 1 & 2 - Sailing 1 CSA May 7-9, May 14-16 Camp Kateri, Hawthorne Cost: $40/girl, $40/adult Set sail on McCarthy Lake as you learn the basics of sailing. Find out how to read the wind, tack and jibe and, most importantly, have fun sailing! Run a course in our Optimus Prams and feel the wind in your sails.

Aquatics Weekend 1 & 2 - Sailing 2 CSA May 7-9, May 14-16 Camp Kateri, Hawthorne Cost: $40/girl, $40/adult Expand your sailing and teamwork skills as you guide a laser through the water during this weekend-long course. Learn how to rig a laser on your own and join in a regatta as you solidify your skills. Prerequisite: Sailing 1 (Basic Sailing).

Aquatics Weekend 1 - WOW Brownie Journey BMay 7-9 Camp Kateri, Hawthorne Cost: $40/girl, $40/adult Ready, set, WOW! Spend the weekend at camp working toward your Wonders of Water Journey. Girls will develop a love for water while learning how to not only save it but also how to share their knowledge with others. Girls will make a storm in a jar and edible aquifers and learn the science of rainbows. Water relays are a must in this action-packed weekend, so don’t forget your swimwear!

Archery for Brownies B Jan 9 Klondike Archery Park, Pensacola Cost: $15/Girl Scout, $2/adult Unleash your inner Amazon and learn the basics of archery with Panhandle Bowhunters and Archery Association! This session is just for Brownies-- depending on interest, more archery programs for Brownies may be added.

Artists Think Outside the Box with FSU Campus Girl Scouts B Feb 20 Cost: $4/Girl Scout Look for outdoor inspiration to create an art piece inspired by our beautiful environment! You’ll learn and practice tips on creating outdoor scenes and experience the fun of art! Get ready to get outside and get creative!

Supplies needed: A jar with lid, 1/3 cup hot water, ice and hairspray.

Instructions:1. Start by pouring the hot water into the jar and swirling it

around to warm up the sides of the jar.

2. Then, turn the lid upside down and place it on the top of the

jar. Place several ice cubes onto the lid and allow it to rest on the

top of the jar for 20 seconds.

3. Remove the lid and quickly spray a bit of hairspray into the jar,

then replace the lid with the ice still on top.

4. Watch the “cloud” form! When you see a good amount of con-

densation, remove the lid and watch the “cloud” escape into the

air.

The Outdoor Training Extravaganza is an annual weekend for volunteers and older Girl Scouts with the mission of all participants receiving training in an outdoor skill. Participants receive a Level 1 USA Archery certification to facilitate archery with girls. Must be at least 18 years old.

Outdoor Training Extravaganza - Camp Training V April 23-25 Camp Kateri, Hawthorne Cost: $40/adult In this fun and exciting camp training, you will be introduced to all things camping, from preparing your girls for the outdoor experience to planning and budgeting for the overnight trip. You’ll also learn about important safety procedures and council policies involved with making your trip a success. Participants will compete their GSGC Camp Training enabling them to guide girls on day, overnight, or multi-night outdoor experiences beyond the council properties.

Samoa Brownie Parfait with Salted Caramel Sauce

Samoas Brownies:Adjust oven rack to the lower middle position and turn oven to 250 degrees. Line a 9x9 baking sheet with two pieces of aluminum foil to form a sling for easy removal of brownies. Spray foil with non-stick spray. Melt chopped semi-sweet chocolate and cubed butter until smooth. Set aside.Whisk the eggs, sugar, vanilla and salt together. Whisk in warm chocolate into the egg mixture until just combined. Using a spoon, pour in flour and combine batter. Add in toasted coconut and chopped Samoas cookies, stir to combine. Pour into the prepared baking dish and spread out evenly. Bake for 35 minutes or until a tooth pick inserted into the brownies comes out nearly clean, with just a few crumbs hanging on. Allow to cool on a wire rack for at least 90 minutes before removing and cutting into 1" cubes for parfaits. There will be leftover brownies from this recipe.

Coconut Whipped Cream:Place 1 cup heavy whipping cream into a large bowl or stand mixer bowl. Beat on medium until cream turns frothy. Beat continuously until the cream starts to thicken, slowly whip in sugar and coconut extract. At the very end just before stiff peaks form, add in additional coconut flakes if desired.Set aside or chill until you are ready to assemble parfaits.

Salted Caramel Sauce:Stir together sugar, water and corn syrup in a medium sauce pan over medium-high heat. Bring mixture to a boil, gently stirring to ensure all the sugar has melted. Boil until the mixture turns a dark golden brown, About 8-10 minutes. Remove from heat and VERY carefully and very slow stir the cream into the mixture, being sure to stir constantly. BE VERY CAREFUL, the sauce will sputter and expand - but keep stirring. Once combined, add the salt and butter and continue stirring until both are completely melted and combined. Cool to room temperature.

To Assemble:In bowls, ramekins or stemless wine glasses, dollop a bit of whipped cream into the bottom. Top with cut brownies and bits of chopped Samoa cookie. Drizzle with salted caramel sauce. Repeat process again until parfait reaches the top of the dish. Top with extra toasted coconut and one whole Samoa cookie. Serve immediately or chill until ready to serve.
