I needed wagons for my live steam loco, but with no funds available to purchase built up or kit wagons I decided to build my own.

I had some Chinese tankers and got some more off Henrik, they became the chassis. I settled on building 5 L4 Wooden highsider wagons and 2 KC Wooden Box cars.

I built the bodies from plywood and some plastic angles. After the build I painted them with Red Oxide Spray paint from Mitre10.

I then replaced the wheels with Bachmann 32mm metal wheels (stolen from Donna’s Old carriages). I am happy with their performance.

News from Scott Polk Hi Everyone, I have gone ahead and started a new company, Polk's GeneratioNeXt. We will start by continuing to manufacture the full line of Aristo-Craft track. I'm trying my hardest to continue the entire line of trains as well. A new website is being built and should be ready the first week of the new year but we will open for business January 2nd. There will be a lot more info to come. Spread the word. Oh yeah, I found a container of track and it should be here the middle of January. With your support I know this will be a success. Thank you for everything. Scott

Christchurch Garden Railway Group visit to Culcreuch Fold Garden Railway

Report by A. Nony Mous

At 4am on Sunday 24 November 2013 a heavy fog covered Rangiora and did not bode well for the Christchurch Garden Railway Group Running day at Ian and Ann Galbraith’s Culcreuch Fold Garden Railway. However by 10am, when the first of the members arrived, the sun was out and it was all hands to the pump to set up two gazebos, umbrellas and set out seats and tables. The trailer had been parked conveniently for the storage of carrying boxes.

Graeme Moar was the first to get a train running on track power. As the railway has been designed mainly for use with battery

powered locomotives, the whole railway has been retained as a single section as far as track power goes. This did cause a bottleneck at times with a number of members queuing up to have their turn at running. Paper was placed on the track to insulate those locomotives which were “parked up”.

A large number had arrived before midday and trains ran while all enjoyed their picnic lunches.

Ian and Ann had invited close neighbours to call in during the afternoon as a “Naming Ceremony”: was to take place at 2:45pm. Over 60 members,

neighbours and friends were in attendance

A ribbon was strung across the tracks and two trains driven up to the ribbon ready for the “Naming Ceremony”

Tania McIlroy, of McAlpine’s North Canterbury Pipe Band piped in Don Ellis, President of the CGRG followed by Ian Galbraith together with Lorrain and Kelly Patterson, who were to cut the ribbon. Don welcomed all present and introduced Ian to explain the reason for the “Naming Ceremony” . The original railway in Masterton was the Culcreuch Fold Garden Railway and the railway, still work in progress, for the Running Day was the reincarnation of the original. Warren Stringer of the Wairarapa Garden Railway Group has been trying to get the Wairarapa Group members to name their railways. As this was the first Running Day on the new rai lway, i t was thought appropriate to have an official opening. Lorraine and Kelly then cut the ribbon, declaring the railway named, and with much whistle blowing, the two trains moved off. The official party were then piped from the scene.

another short ceremony to take place before afternoon tea.

Again to the skirl of the pipes, Tania led Ken Henderson, sword bearer, Ann Galbraith, Haggis

bearer, Dennis Lindsay, Whisky carrier and Kerry Patterson Dirk carrier around the gathering to the table where Ian waited to receive all the items. Ian explained that

as St Andrews Day was near it was decided that a Haggis be prepared and addressed. Ian delivered Robert Burns “Address to a Haggis” with fine flourish

and all in the Haggis party toasted the Haggis with a large dram. The Sword, Haggis, Whisky and Dirk were handed back to their bearers and the party piped past the gathering to complete the afternoon’s ceremonies.

Afternoon tea was served after all had been provided with a taste of the Haggis.

What did this have to do with running trains? Nothing. It was just something Ann and Ian wished to add to the day.

Ann and Ian wish to thank Lyn and Alf for their assistance in supplying the second gazebo, a number of seats and helping also with the setting up.

We all love going round to Jeremy and Mandy Were’s place for their running day. For me it is like an early Christmas. Most of us only get to dream about having a great big yard, with a great big train track where we can run our trains. And there in the manicured grounds of the Were mansion our dreams can turn to reality.

Not content with just laying down track on the nice flat back section, Jeremy has brought in truckloads of fill material - many many truckloads, to turn a big chunk of his back yard into great hillsides and valleys. Through some artful sculpting of the landscape, and the extensive use of rocks on the hillsides he has creatively captured the look and feel of an A m e r i c a n h i g h - c o u n t r y wilderness.

And across all of this lumpy ground he has laid down what seems like miles of track that sidles around the hills, across trestles and bridges, and through a number of tunnels.

I was planning to check how long it takes to do a full circuit of the layout, but kept getting distracted by all of the interesting things that were going on.

When we arrived there was ‘something different’ about the layout that I couldn’t put my

finger on until I saw a row of tree stumps along one fence line. There used to be a big stand of mature trees along here, and they had clearly been removed. Without them there is more light

getting in and the layout seems even bigger.

Two of these stumps were from trees that were blown over in a recent wind storm – and when they came down they landed on

the township area taking out a couple of buildings and mangling some of the track work. Luckily most of the buildings and track work survived and the disaster zone has been tidied up nicely.

With the big long track and access to track power there is plenty of opportunity for all to run their trains. Jeremy had his Bachmann Consolidation out today with a rake of mixed goods

wagons; Dean had a new Aristocraft SD45 diesel hauling his 2-bay ore wagons; Lee had the 2-truck Shay chuffing away as it trundled round with all manner of logging paraphernalia hooked on behind it.

It looked like it was going to be a goods-only day until Lloyd brought out his trusty Isle of Man diesel ‘Viking’ with its old passenger coach in tow. Now we not only had freight service, but a tourist train as well.

Later Lloyd fired up his live steamer Beyer Peacock 2-4-0 ‘Peveril’ to take over the passenger service, and being a new acquisition this loco’s driver is still in training. Here we had the combination of a loco with raw power, coupled to a not-very-responsive radio-controlled throttle, and a driver trying to get to grips with his new charge…. Well Peveril was off like the proverbial rocket seemingly in an attempt to set a new land speed record. That was definitely a good way to get those pesky goods trains ducking for cover in the nearest siding.

Of course everyone here knows about my railway naming campaign these days, so Jeremy was ready and waiting when my question came.. the one about ‘have you got a name for the layout yet?’.. He had been toying with a couple of names for a while, and has now zeroed in on The Red Rock Junction Railway; appropriately named after a couple of big red rocks on the hillside by the town. There are even plans for a name board in a place that is yet-to-be-decided, and if there is any of Mandy’s food involved then I will be

looking forward to the official naming ceremony in due course.

Actually Mandy puts on a brilliant afternoon tea, and the refreshments are more like a feast than the regular smoko arrangements that most of us

have. - which is another reason why it seems like Christmas when we have running days here.

A n d t o d a y t h e s m o k o conversation inevitably turned to the upcoming convention and the state of the layouts that will be on

display. Yes well the consensus is that there is still a lot of work to do, but it looks like Jeremy and Mandy have their part of the show well under control.

The Wettington & Mahawatu Railway Co Report & Photos: John Robinson, Tawa

Several years ago we attended an official opening and immediate closing of the Pukerua Bay branch of the Wettington & Ma-hawatu Railway Co (WMR). Un-fortunately history is repeating itself as the November running afternoon was held at the official opening of the Whitby branch of the WMR and at the opening the imminent closure was announced quietly (although it may survive long enough for more runs this summer before relocation). It’s a real shame as this second version of Rob England’s WMR is, dare I say it, better than the first. It is pleasing to know though that there will be a third version of the WMR and I’m sure the third ver-sion will be even richer from the experiences of the first two.

The current Whitby branch of the WMR is located on what was an awkward shaped small lawn about a well vegetated bank. The lawn was removed allowing a moderate sized central loop most-

ly laid at ground level with a cen-tral mountain up which a tight logging branch climbs. A cun-ning piece of design and con-struction is an elevated section of the main loop that winds though the bushes and trees on the bank, allowing much larger radii than would have been possible if lim-ited to the lawn area. Off the loop is a spur with a number of sidings for visiting trains to be raked up, a reverse loop would have been built at the end of the spur should the closing not have been imminent. Heading the oth-er way from the main loop and spur junction is a lengthy branch winding down through the trees to a storage shed and steam up bay, most of the branch is elevat-ed, trains look so good working

Chris Drowley's LGB rail truck with its scratch built trailer.

logging branch looks just right.

through the trees and bushes on the elevated section.

Rob has been experimenting with battery powered Airwire/DCC control. The sound unit on his

Shay was most impressive, a ben-efit of the full function control using DCC. The WMR doesn’t have track power but that didn’t seem to matter on the running day as visiting trains were either

battery powered or live steam. We kept two trains running most of the time, occasionally shuttling up and down the branch to the storage shed and steam up bay.

THE GARDEN WHISTLE

As with all running days you re-ally needed to be there, as words never do them justice. It was a real shame though with Rob hav-ing put so much effort in that on-ly a handful of WGRG members were able to attend. Our discus-sions covered lots of things such as comparing his Aristocraft turn-outs with the Piko ones recently installed, the demise of Aris-tocraft, how Airwire/DCC com-pares to Revolution control, and

just how pleasant it was sitting in the sun running trains.

Another thing discussed was Rob’s proposal for buildings on the future WMR that will be sim-ple outline “cartoon” buildings, maybe not much more than raw timber shapes with effort instead focusing on operation and the trains themselves. The theory being not unlike minimalist stage settings where there is just

enough to suggest to your imagi-nation what it should see, and your imagination does the rest. Bridges would be a little more detailed; certainly the trestle on the logging branch is a fine bit of construction.

I look forward to seeing what the future holds for the next version of the WMR. In the meantime thanks Rob for another good val-ue running day. We had fun!

Wellington Garden Railway Group member Wayne Haste still goes to primary school, true this time as the caretaker at Tawa School, but each time I call in he is eating his lunch (no change there). Anyway, Wayne roped three other members of the WGRG to help with a fund rais-ing "drive a train" sideshow at his school's fair. So on a stunningly warm and sunny Saturday, 23rd November, Wayne, Brian Cash-more, Chris Drowley and myself met up at the school to set up 4 loops of track around an octago-nal seating come stage area in readiness for running a selection of trains. On the three largest loops a selection of trains were offered for the young punters to drive a train for 5 minutes for a

small fee. The fourth loop was intended as a demonstration track for live steam and other trains that weren't quite suitable for young drivers. Was it a success? We think so, certainly there were always young lads and ladies keen for a

drive. Pictures of smiling con-centration throughout their turns they were. How much did we raise? Don't know as the funds collected passed straight to the school for counting. What wasn't a success? The demonstration track, while there was some inter-est in the live steam, having a fourth train to drive would have been more beneficial. Also with the sound of the adjacent band it was impossible to here if you had your burner set right or even lit, and the viewers couldn't hear the chuff, oh and with the heat of the day there was very little visible steam. Would we do it again? Yes, but we'd need some shade next time if it as hot! We had fun, hopefully we raised the profile of garden railways a bit, and we did a helpful bit of charity work for a good school

What a great day our visit to Grant and Donna Alexander’s railways at Cambridge turned out to be. After being cancelled last year and again last month due to the weather we finally scored a rather warm day. A good number of Auckland members crossed the great divide of the Bombay hills and were joined by a number of Hamilton members.

As most know Grant and Donna have two railways; one a large G Scale garden railway and the other a even bigger 7 1/4 gauge ride which can also be operated with a number of goods wagons to form a train when there are no passengers needing a ride. Grant has recently built a battery powered model T truck to add to

his collection of Locos. Craig Sand looked after his extreme garden railway while Grant entertained the visitors.

A number of trains were run over the day on the garden railway; Tony Gosnel from Hamilton brought along a very nice battery powered and weathered short line train. He also had a propeller driven truck; the performance was not quite up to expectation. Probably the warm air was rather dry lacking its usual moisture to push against.

Allan Smith gave his rebuilt Rodgers K it first club outing. This was the first G Scale locomotive Allan built probably twenty odd years ago on a cheaper commercial chassis in his

representation of the Kingston Flyer. It has now been rebuilt with larger Bachmann wheels and now looks closer to the original. As you can see Allan loves adding detail to his models.

Grant insisted I bring down the Garratt and said he would have a big enough train for it to pull. Bruce Cropper took along his Stainz which has been converted to battery power using two AA sized lithium ion batteries supplying 7.5 volts. He slowly commandeered the entire available passenger stock and ending up with a 20 total behind it with no wheel slip. This stole my thunder from the Garrett; at least it managed to pull this train

as well. One day I really should put a test train behind it.

Behind every good man there is an even better woman and as usual being the hostess for the day entails the obligatory tea making etc. and of course that large pot of wonderful soup for lunch was much appreciated. A big thank you to you Donna; when we left for home we were all well fed and watered!

After Lunch the track power was turned off and turned over to the steam boys and girl. Geoff Hallam had problems with his Lynton and Barnstable Railway 2-6-2 Lew; fortunately he brought along a Roundhouse Linda as a s p a r e . J o h n a n d H e l e n

Stephenson also brought down his Linda so we had two running at the same time. Murray and Donna Lee also gave their two an airing. Murray has added a couple of NZR styled Kc wagons to his rake of wooden L’s.

A few of us visited Andy Whyman’s workshop on the way home. Andy has an Aladdin’s cave of engineering machinery to aid his construction of live steam models etc. Ray and I made sure our wives had a good look inside to show how short our own workshops were; but sadly to no avail; they just don’t understand what all this beautiful machinery can do.

Liz and I traveled down with Bruce so we made a further detour into Hamilton to see David Petchey. Bruce has got very keen on the Walsh Talyllyn Railway in Great Britain and is intending to build a battery powered model of Dolgoch. David along with Andy has built a live steam version of the 0-4-0 Dolgoch using a geared down oscillating motor set between the frames. Interesting in having two people interested in that railway; it also has a very special interest to me also. In 1976 I read a book RAILWAY ADVENTURE by L.T.C. Rolt $1.10c which was about the restoration of the Talyllyn Railway; the first railway in the

Installing battery powered lighting in Chinese passenger cars

As I decided to do some late night running, I needed some lights in my passenger cars.

My Chinese blue passenger cars I purchased from Macks Track at a very good price, including postage, were the easiest to do with out any alterations.

I run these with my blue LGB crocodile. I purchased some LED lights from Jaycar Electronics store.

I cut and hot glued the lights to the underside of the roofs. The roofs just pop off easily and using

JST plugs and sockets, purchased from Murray Bolds website, I soldered and used heat shrink to

interconnect the cars to each other.

I was going to power them off the track via a voltage regulator.

This was to be installed in a blue Euro postal van which has track pick-ups.

I decided against this due to the varied voltage on the track. So I used a battery box with 8 compartments for 8 x 1.5 volt, AA batteries =12 volts DC, added a switch to the veranda and headed off to Kerry

Paterson’s late one Friday night for the test.

National Garden Railway Convention 2014

Time: 15/16th February 2014 Garden Railways: We have 11 Garden Railways to visit many of which have been substantially up graded since the last Conven-

tion held in the Wairarapa.

Included is the world famous “Hydrangea Tram line” of Christine and Lee Collett as appeared the Garden Railways magazine.

Update:

In the last year the Wairarapa has seen the building of two new railways and one in the process of being built plus the upgrade of four more. In October we visited the Taylor’s railway and deemed it fit for the convention. The Taylor’s have put a lot of effort in restoring Beauchamp Dickens’s railway. My railway is still under reconstruction but will be ready by February as will (we all hope) Dan Hughes large new railway. He has a large portion running with the Northern loop to finish.

All looks great for the layout tours.

Morning and afternoon tea plus lunch and dinner are all organized.

Seminars: All seminars are organized, details soon.

Special visits: On Monday a conducted tour of Cross Creek and the incline will occur.

Please mention you are interested when you register. Also for those traveling north Murray Bold in Ashhurst will have his railway open for visits.

Interesting fact: From Carterton all the garden railways are less than 20 minutes apart.

Register Interest: To get updates please contact Lloyd Dickens

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/aucklandandNZgardenrailways/join The group is not intended to compete with or replace any existing group or the club’s communication structure, and it is intended to supplement but not compete with Garden Whistle. I believe it may meet presently unfulfilled needs of some members. This is what I particularly have in mind. A means by which members (who join the group) can contact each other individually (“off group”) or all members of the group between meetings. A repository / archive of useful information, including the specialized interests, resources and skills of group members, and including photos, plans, designs etc. Current information sharing of several kinds as below Items for sale or wanted, both private and commercial Commercial suppliers in NZ and overseas who are, or are not, good to deal with. In particular, “Where can I buy ....... ?”, “What is the cheapest source of ....... ?”, “How do I ....... ?”, “Is there anyone who could help me with ...... ?”, “There are some good LGB items for sale on Trade Me right now, including .....”, “I can recommend ......” Progress on home layouts A discussion forum allowing for respectful debate Co-ordination with groups (both on and off line) and individuals with similar interests, including those modeling in 16mm scale and those with specialized interests such as live steam Etc. The success or otherwise of the group will ultimately depend on the willingness of a number of people to participate actively and generously. I belong to an English 16mm scale group (with many more members than we would ever have), and I have for example sought and obtained valuable information about prototypes that I am wanting to model, including from people who have worked on the actual item. Folks, like it or not, we have entered “The Information Age”
