HERE we go – summer’s with us. And while we might be thinking of getting away at some stage, you’re likely to be busy looking after cars taking people on their holidays.

Yes, we’re in the holiday season, but it’ll undoubtedly be business as usual for independent workshops across the country. Many people still use their cars to go on holiday and the last thing they want is a breakdown on the way.

Of course cars are more reliable than ever before, but as they age there’s still the risk of a breakdown: Batteries can fail at any time – and not just in the winter – but worn spark plugs can also cause problems. In this issue we look at these two important sectors and what’s available – and how you can make strong, reliable profits too.

We also get to grips with the unsung heroes of the workshop – the consumables. It’s easy to take them for granted, but where would you be without blue paper rolls, disposable gloves, numberplate bolts and paper mats? Put simply, you’d be stuck without consumables.

Of course summer means there are plenty of

classic car events to get to: Our man Richard Barnett manages to get a few weekends off and rather than getting stuck in with some gardening, gets along to see some old cars in action. As he explains, he’s not interested in classic cars parked in fields. And don’t get him started about owners and their partners wearing matching fleeces…

Enjoy the issue!

British women are charged an average of £45 more than men for car repairs, an investigation by

Clickmechanic found. Clickme-chanic, the online marketplace for car repairs, examined inde-pendent garages UK-wide and found a standard repair costing a man £571 will typically cost a woman £616, an 8% increase.

male and female mystery shoppers requested quotes to replace the clutch of a 2011 Ford Focus from 182 garages across the UK. they found eight out of ten charged women a ‘female premium’ and only 6% of the surveyed garages gave a consistent quote to male and female customers.

“For every female driver, this report will be an unwelcome

surprise,” says Andrew Jervis, co-founder and Ceo of Clickme-chanic. “while most mechanics work to provide honest, reliable quotes, these results show a worrying minority of garages fail to do so. there’s a desper-ate need for transparency and consistency in price to establish trust with consumers of both sexes.”

Birmingham repair garages charged the highest female premium at 31%, followed by manchester (28%) and Glasgow (20%). only two out of the ten surveyed cities bucked the trend and charged men more for a repair, with sheffield and edin-burgh garages quoting males 5% and 19% more than females.

the investigation uncovered some price-hiking across the country, regardless of gender.

on average, garages quoted men and women £594 to carry out the work, £80 more (16%) than the £514 recommended by industry standard guidelines provided by car makers, parts providers and trade bodies.

“Customers, male and fe-male, rely on mechanics to be accurate with pricing. we re-cently undertook a study that found 45% have no idea how much common repairs on an average car should cost. while there’s a minority of cowboys taking advantage of the fact most consumers don’t know how much repairs should cost, most mechanics are reliable and trustworthy. these results should encourage the industry to focus its efforts on ensuring mechan-ics have the best possible tools to provide reliable quotes.”

Continental’s ContisportCon-tact 5 has taken top spot in this year’s Ultimate tyre test from auto express.

For many years the auto express summer tyre test has been the benchmark for performance, cel-ebrating the best of the best in the summer tyre market. the awards highlight exceptional performance, qual-ity, safety, desirability and value. they are seen within the mo-toring industry as a stamp of approval that offers motoring enthusiasts confi-dence when looking for their next sum-mer tyre purchase.

the auto express Ultimate tyre test pit-ted the Continental ContisportContact 5 against ten competitor summer tyres in size 225/45R17. the award recognises the Con-tisportContact 5 across a broad spectrum, taking top spot for dry handling, dry braking, wet handling and wet braking.

auto express said, “Rarely do we see such a dominant performance in our tests, but it was clear as soon as we started compiling the results that Con-tinental was going to retain its 17-inch title. Four wins and three runner-up spots left little doubt and gave the Contisport-Contact 5 a bigger margin of victory than in the close-run 2013 test.”

scott Benbow, Product Mar-keting Manager at Continental said; “We are delighted to have been commended by auto ex-press yet again in the latest summer tyre test. the Con-tisportContact 5 has taken the summer market by storm, with multiple tyre test wins since its launch, reiterating our leading position for safety.”

With the ContisportContact

5, Continental’s engineers have developed a tyre which is equal-ly suitable for performance cars and sUVs and represents a significant progression on the successful ContisportContact 3.

With shorter braking distanc-es in all weather conditions, excellent road grip and safety when cornering and reduced fuel consumption, the Conti-sportContact 5 is available in a range of sizes from 17 inch upwards for cars and 18 inch upwards for sUV.

For more information on Continental’s complete range, visit www.continental-tyres.co.uk and for the full prod-uct tests on auto express, visit www.autoexpress.co.uk.

Autoparts joinsNTDAAUtoPaRts UK has

become a member of the national tyre Distributors associa-tion, coinciding with

the company’s launch of an exclusive range of oRiUM tyres.

there are six autoparts branches, five Midwest Motor Factor sites and Monmore auto Parts joining ntDa member-ship meaning that group factor manager, Craig McCracken, will also join the ntDa executive Council.

Founded in 1930, the ntDa is a proactive trade association representing and promoting the interests of the tyre wholesale, distribution and retail sectors of the automotive aftermarket.

the ntDa protects its mem-bers’ interests through its influence with regulatory bod-ies, Government departments, standard setting bodies and other opinion formers that es-tablish industry best practice both in the UK and in europe. it is consulted whenever new regulations or legislation are being considered and lobbies to ensure that members’ views and concerns are satisfactorily addressed and that the overall regulatory system remains prac-ticable and affordable.

stefan Hay, ntDa director said: “We are naturally delight-ed to have autoparts on board

as a full retail member of the association, especially at a time when the ntDa is experienc-ing an unprecedented period of membership growth.”

Craig McCracken, autoparts Group Factor Manager, said “We’re also delighted to be join-ing ntDa and to be so warmly accepted by the membership. We believe our expanding port-folio of products and services can add significant value to tyre installers and look forward to developing close relationships within the association.”

oRiUM tyres, the new-est brand from autoparts UK, are manufactured in europe by one of the world’s largest tyre manufacturers in an iso 9001-accredited factory, com-pliant with UneCe regulations.

the oRiUM brand meets the requirements from installers for a quality product, very com-petitively priced. Based on the guaranteed production quality, the oRiUM brand provides safe tyres for passenger car and light commercial vehicles.

the oRiUM brand is available in four different ranges: touring, High Performance, light truck and sUV.

CRoFt CiRCUit celebrated its biggest crowd ever, after the opening half of the 2015 Dunlop Msa British touring Car Cham-pionship reached a captivating climax in north Yorkshire 27/28 June. the BtCC is the UK’s top motor sport series, and its annual north-eastern pilgrimage is always popular, more so this year, as thousands of fans thronged the track to see the tin-top gladia-tors in flat-out, wheel-to-wheel action. they saw a tremendous spectacle of high-octane entertainment, from the flame-spitting, headlining touring cars to support series the Renault UK Clio Cup, Porsche Carrera Cup GB, Msa Formula single-seaters, Ginetta Juniors and the Ginetta Gt4 superCup.

We are naturally delighted to have Autoparts on board as a full retail member of the Association

GsF CAr Parts say the quality of el-stock products has been clearly high-lighted, after parent

company BorG Automotive won the prestigious ‘remanu-facturer of the Year’ award at the 2015 reMatec trade fair in Amsterdam, held during June.

denmark-based BorG Au-tomotive is one of europe’s largest remanufacturing groups. Factories in denmark, Poland, Belgium and Birmingham pro-duce the rotating electrics, steering, braking, A/C compres-sor and eGr valve ranges sold under their elstock brand in the UK.

reMatec is billed by organ-isers as the world’s ‘largest remanufacturing event’ and this year attracted 240 exhibitors from 25 countries as a record-breaking 3,500 visitors from 250 countries attended the three day event.

Now in its 11th year, the ‘remanufacturer of the Year’ award is the event’s lead-ing accolade, bringing BorG Automotive into select list of previous winners. the judges noted the importance of BorG’s ‘constant commitment to qual-

ity’ in building ‘a world-class company which has contributed significantly to the reputation of automotive remanufacturing.’

”We are incredibly proud to receive the award”, said BorG Automotive Commercial direc-tor, Ivan Mikkelsen. ”the award is the culmination of many years hard work to increase range and heighten quality.”

“elstock is a name garag-es are learning to trust in big numbers,” said Jonny West, Managing director of GsF Car

Parts. “We’re delighted, but by no means surprised, to see elstock products win plaudits at global level.”

With over 1,000 employ-ees, BorG Automotive has increased sales by more than 400% since 2008, selling more than 1.3 million units in europe during 2014.

reseArCH BY lawyers Caddick davies has found a motoring postcode lottery exists in eng-land and Wales. It used FoI requests to all england and Wales police forces after it found drivers being offered dif-ferent punishments for motoring offences depending on where they were caught. some forces offer rehabilitation courses as an alternative to penalty points, others are not keen on the idea of rehabilitation course. some drivers caught speeding in es-sex may be offered a place on a speed awareness course, those found guilty Gloucestershire don’t get this option.

reseArCH For VW Commer-cial Vehicles shows 50% of van drivers, or over 1.2 million vehicles, are driving overloaded vans on UK roads. the research, targeting fleet managers and van drivers, found nearly half of UK businesses don’t monitor the weights of their company vehicles, and 53% of drivers don’t know their vehicle’s maxi-mum load carrying capacity. VW Commercial Vehicles is working with the dVsA to highlight to fleet managers the potential dangers to driving overloaded vehicles.

NIssAN HAs underlined its com-mitment to lead in crossovers and electric vehicles with the start of extension work for a new extra-large press line at its sun-derland manufacturing plant. this £37m investment will see the plant extended and a new 5,200 tonne press installed.

GSF HAIL NEW DPF CLEANER AS ‘GAME CHANGER’

ADVERTORIAL

GSF CAR Parts have launched a new Professional DPF Cleaner, which they say offers a unique

alternative to garages looking to profi tably develop business from the growing demand for diesel particulate fi lter (DPF) regeneration work.

In a telephone survey in April, 84% of garages said they were receiving enquiries from motorists with DPF problems ‘at least once a week’. Most also reported this number of enquiries was ‘increasing’.

The Vetech DPF Professional Cleaner, exclusively available through GSF Car Parts, is a non-fl ammable solution supplied in 5 Litre containers for just £28.95 + VAT. It’s suitable for all aluminium, magnesium, zinc or cadmium parts, and all latest generation DPFs.

To use it, the DPF is removed, then fi lled with the solution overnight. The liquid gently breaks down and cleans the residues. Afterwards, simply rinse with clean water and refi t.

In tests, Vetech DPF Professional Cleaner has been shown to remove all visible dirt, soot and ash trapped in the fi lter cores. Even the worst examples have all been returned to normal operating levels, performing at over 95% of their ‘as new’ capacity.

“We see the new Vetech

Professional DPF Cleaner as a ‘game changer’,” said John Wright, Garage Essentials Manager at GSF Car Parts. “Up until now, the workshop options have been to use pour-in additives, which can’t always clear more stubborn blockage, or have specialist workshop capital equipment to perform regenerations, which just isn’t viable for many independents.”

Beyond this, garages have had to either recommend a DPF replacement, or send the part away for specialist cleaning. Both options typically incur delays, with expense running into the high hundreds or even thousands of pounds.

“The new Vetech DPF Professional Cleaner offers many advantages as it gives the garage a chance of an affordable repair whilst saving workshops ramp time,” said Jonny West, GSF Car Parts Managing Director. “This can keep an old car off the scrap heap for longer – keeping business in the aftermarket.”

Feedback from early adopters on the product, just released on general sale, is unequivocal.

Dennis Donohue, owner of D.S. Motors Birmingham said: “This now makes the job affordable to our customers. We have used it on several vehicles and have had 100% success rate.

“One 2006 Saab was heading

blocked so badly that is was a non-runner.

“The solution returned the DPF to the original level. It is amazing and I would recommend it to every workshop out there.”

GSF Car Parts advise using the Vetech DPF Professional Cleaner before recommending DPF replacement or off site cleaning. You can order it now to try for yourself from your local branch.

to the scrap yard as it was not regenerating, and was stuck in limp mode with a new DPF costing over £1,200. Within 24 hours, the vehicle was returned to the customer, as good as new, for a faction of the cost of a replacement.”

Tejveer Brar, owner of Star Garage London said: “The fi rst time I used the Vetech DPF Professional Cleaner was on a 2007 BMW 535 that was

A driver went a little nuts in Brazil, recently. He illegally parked his car in a disabled only parking bay. When he returned he found his entire car was covered in post-it notes which formed the international symbol of disabled parking facilities on his car. The man became enraged, angrily pulling off chunks of the adhesive squares until he thought he could see well enough to drive. He failed, as he narrowly avoided smashing into passing traffic as he made a tyre squealing escape from the scene. Too late! A traffic policeman had already taken his car registration.

campaign.Gott is calling out for a team

of fundraisers to each take on one charitable act for their own chosen cause to put as much as possible back into the com-munity.

people who make the pledge to be one of Gott’s charity heroes will have their efforts promoted through Gott’s web-site, newsletter and via social media.

Gott technical Services di-rector, Ian Gott said: “Being in business for 35 years has exceeded our expectations and we thought what better way to celebrate than by giving some-thing back. our business has always had a robust CSr strat-egy and we are now going full throttle to raise as much money as possible for numerous chari-ties.

“Whether people want to enter as a group or individu-ally we’re looking for committed members of the motor industry

or simply friends of our business who are keen to raise funds for a good cause. So if you think you have what it takes, please get in touch.”

the Morpeth-based second-generation family business Gott has seen steady growth and excellent staff retention over the years, which it puts down to focusing on its servicing and breakdown response division during the recession - and is now seeing customers starting to re-invest back into new ga-rage equipment.

the past few years has also seen Gott move up a gear, taking the company forward into the Scottish and Cumbrian marketplaces, having secured numerous contracts including Glasgow’s newest Nissan deal-ership.

Ford C-MAX 1.6-litre TDCi Diesel Timing Belt Kit InstallationThe 1.6-litre TDCi diesel engine used in the Ford C-MAX, as well as several Citroën, Mini, Peugeot and Volvo models, features a timing belt driven water pump. As replacing the belt also requires the auxiliary drive system to be removed, Dayco recommend that all the systems’ components - timing drive and auxiliary drive - be replaced at the same time.

This step-by-step technical guide will help technicians through the process, to avoid complications and ensure a fi rst-rate job.

As with all primary drive system jobs, the work should be undertaken when the engine is cold, so ideally the vehicle will not have been run for at least four hours.

Remove the cowling from within the front wheel arch of the driver’s side to expose the auxiliary belt system. Slacken the auxiliary belt tensioner with a spanner and hold the tensioner in position with a 6mm Ø pin (fi gure 1) in order to take off the belt, then remove the tensioner, followed by the crankshaft pulley. This will reveal the phonic sensor and the RPM sensor connector, which needs to be disconnected.

Remove the lower screws of the timing case and then move the coolant reservoir to one side to gain access to the engine mount, which once the engine has been suitably supported from below, needs to be removed, along with the engine mount fl ange. Then remove the upper half of the timing case, which allows the bottom half to be removed and exposes the timing drive system.

Using a suitable pin, such as drill bit, hold the camshaft pulley in its timing position. The crankshaft timing must be carried out with a pin inserted in a hole in the engine block (see picture box in fi gure 2) and as this is diffi cult to reach, it is wise to paint a mark on the crankshaft pinion and engine case.

Loosen the bolt on the timing belt tensioner and remove both bolt and tensioner, followed by the timing belt. Replace the idler with the new one from the Dayco kit KTBWP4930 and tighten the nut to 35Nm. Using another suitable pin, hold the fuel

injection pump pulley in the correct position and then remove the water pump.

Ensuring that the cooling system has been fl ushed through and no debris is present, install the new Dayco water pump, complete with its seal, followed by the new tensioner, taking care to position it as shown (fi gure 3). While observing its direction of rotating arrows, install the new HT timing belt, with its slack section facing the tensioner.

With an Allan key, rotate the tensioner anticlockwise to tension the belt correctly and tighten the bolt to 25Nm and then rotate the engine and check the timing. The correct belt tension has been achieved if the tensioner is positioned as indicated (fi gure 4). Naturally, repeat the process if necessary.

Refi t all the components in their reverse order, but check, and if necessary, replace the crankshaft pulley with Dayco DPV1068, the

fastener for which should be tightened to 30Nm + 180o, and the auxiliary belt tensioner APV1076. However, Dayco recommend the auxiliary belt 6PK975 is always replaced.

PeoPle budget for many predictable outgo-ings, such as mortgages, bills, holidays and home maintenance maintaining, but often leave car repairs out of the equation. the lat-est survey from Allianz global Assistance uK reveals 52% of respondents would have to use their credit card or dip into their savings to pay for car repairs.

the survey says 29% of respondents would use savings, 23% would pay for repairs us-ing credit cards, with only 15% budgeting in advance for this type of unexpected cost, 14% would be covered by a warranty.

Said liz grindell, head of warranty, Allianz global Assistance in the uK: “Most people fail to plan ahead for car repairs, with a small mi-nority budgeting for extra costs and even fewer having warranty cover. How many people would

be happy having to use their savings to fix their car rather than paying for a holiday or splashing out on a new gadget or some shoes? one sim-ple alternative is to pay monthly for a warranty package, spreading the cost and avoiding the risk of unexpected bills.

“the cost of owning and running a car doesn’t stop after paying the insurance, Mot, road tax and fuel, but it’s easy to forget extra expenses like new tyres and repairs and maintenance. With 79% of cars now making it to 12 years on the road, and the average age predicted to rise to 7.95 years in 2015, costs to keep cars running will rise proportionally. to help budget for potential repairs, many modern warranty solutions can be paid for monthly, making it a more manageable cost, and vitally, removing the worry of potentially high repair bills.”

teSlA’S uK Super-charger network continues growing to enable routes to the West of Scotland and

eastern england. Seven Super-charger stations will be added at motorway services with ad-ditional uK motorway locations in the works to be announced soon. the Supercharger net-work extends across europe as well, so Model S drivers can drive from edinburgh to Venice or from tenby to trieste.

In just one year, tesla Su-perchargers throughout the united Kingdom have powered more than two million electric miles. Starting with the first tesla supercharger location in Royal Victoria docks, london, there are now 68 Supercharg-ers at 22 Supercharger stations across the country. they have enabled Model S drivers to save more than 350,000 litres of petrol and 1,000 tons of Co2.

With a range of up to 310 miles and tesla’s worldwide fast charging network, Model S makes road trips a pleasure. Supercharging is free for long distance travel on any prop-erly equipped Model S and provides half a charge in as little as 20 minutes. New uK supercharging stations will be conveniently located on mo-torways. existing Superchargers are on major routes near amen-ities like hotels, business parks and restaurants to allow travel-lers to stop for a quick meal or coffee break.

building a dense network of charging solutions is just one of the ways tesla is proving the benefits of owning a Model S, whether the road takes you to loch lomond or ljubljana.

#britishModelS owners talk about their road trips:

owners tony and Jenny regu-larly travel abroad with their Model S; “For every day and long distance driving and own-

ership experience, the tesla takes first prize every time. We’ve driven it down to the French Alps three times, and toured Scotland, Wales and

Cornwall.”tom has made several trips

to France in his Model S with his family; “We’ve now com-pleted three trips to europe in

With the NTTA Exam being phased out, the DVSA and the Institute of the Motor Industry have worked together to create a Level 3 Light Vehicle Inspection Accreditation. The new Accreditation Route has been designed for the Technician who does not hold the relevant qualifi cations to embark on becoming an MoT Tester.

TEN Automotive have expanded their training facility by opening a new Technical Training Centre offering the IMI Light Vehicle Inspection Training & Accreditation which will exempt the candidate from taking the DVSA NTTA Examination.

The main advantage of this accreditation is that it does not result in a mandatory waiting period of 3 months (or 2 years) if the candidate does not achieve the required standard. With the IMI route, the candidate can immediately opt for additional training and re-assessment.

In addition to the Level 3 LVI Training & Assessment, we also offer a wide range of ATA Courses as well as the IMI Level 3 Air Conditioning Refrigerant Handling Qualifi cation.

ClassiCs -drive them!

Every now there’s a weekend where I don’t have to work, and on those occasions if there’s nothing in the garden that, ac-cording to the missus, wants

doing, I’m off to an old car event.regular readers will probably realise by

now I don’t like static shows: There’s surely nothing worse than owning an old car, but driving it to a field, parking it up and sit-ting behind it, with the missus, in contract chairs wearing matching fleeces.

The thing I simply DO NOT understand is why anyone with an old car would seem-ingly not want to drive it anywhere other than to a field, where no doubt they’ll sit around with other old car owners complain-ing about more modern cars for example a Lancia Delta Integrale – being allowed to park next to their precious British sports car.

rather than be surrounded by these

narrow-minded types I tend to find events where cars are being – now here’s the surprise – driven. And the owners seem to be enjoying driving them too. recently I’ve been to the Donington Historic Fes-tival, which was started a few years ago, the long-established Goodwood Festival of Speed and the new-this year Flywheel at Bicester Heritage.

Starting with Donington, whose event was held in May, it’s one I always try to get to because I like the mixture of cars and its competitive (but not too competitive) atmosphere. As with so many of these events you can go into the pit garages, get up close to the cars and have a chat with drivers and mechanics alike.

especially interesting were the alter tour-ing cars, from the late-‘80s and early-‘90s, because many see this as the best period for tin-top racing. Looking at the cars I recall seeing on the Tv was great, and in

many ways they’re just as excit-ing as watching AC Cobras and Jaguar E-types going wheel-to-wheel. Now I’ll be honest – I’ll always want to watch historic sa-loons racing, but I’ve also a soft spot for the pre-war cars too.

The mixture of cars competing was enough to please anyone who likes to watch classics in action, and a few weeks later I was off to Bicester Heritage for its Flywheel weekend.

Bicester Heritage is the old RAF bomber station that was closed a few years ago and is now dedicated to all things re-lated to old cars and aeroplanes. There is host of specialists based there, able to tackle all kinds of work an old car might require, from engine rebuilds to painting to trimming. There’s also a place to store old cars.

But the many businesses aside, Bicester Heritage pro-moted itself pretty well with its Flywheel event, which, as the name implies, brought old cars and aeroplanes together in a two-day festival of flying and driving tests. While there were cars forming a great display, it was the driving tests around the former bomber base’s pe-rimeter road that kept visitors entertained. But that wasn’t all, because several flying displays and fly-ins meant it was just important to be looking up at the sky as looking ahead.

For anyone who hadn’t seen old cars being put through their paces, this was the ideal place: The narrow road, short straights and tight curves, coupled with the fact they were never too far away from the spectators, was a good call and deserves repeating next year.

The Thing i simply DO nOT unDersTanD is whyanyOne wiTh an OlD car wOulD seemingly

nOT wanT TO Drive iT anywhere OTher Than TO a fielD.

One week later I headed down to Goodwood for the Festival of Speed. It’s a long-established event, the first taking place in 1993, and it’s grown since those early days. Now it’s a celebration of all things car and, to an extent, motorcycle. Top racing drivers and riders bring the latest – and not so modern – to run up the hill in this most glorious of hillclimbs, although it’s not as steep as Prescott or Shelsley Walsh.

But where else will you also displays from car makers and, in the case of NGK’s stand, aftermarket suppliers too? Com-panies showing their wares have the opportunity to get in front of thousands of enthusiasts and get their message across across three days of pure, high-octane action.

In the past I’ve been critical of the Festival and I still prefer the Revival, but it’s still a great event, and one where anyone who likes cars and bikes can forget the modern-day spoilers such as speed cameras, conges-tion charging and those vile oiks who call themselves ‘clampers’.

Here were three events where old cars are rightfully celebrated –and do you know what? I didn’t see any his ‘n’ hers matching fleeces…

chased either a FRAM, or a CoopersFiaam or even a Purflux, but did you know they are manufactured by the same company; and did you know that they were made right here in the UK – in Wales

at Tredegar! The company name they are manufactured under is Sogefi and

they were founded in Italy just 35 years ago in 1980. They employ 6,700 people worldwide from twenty one countries and across 42 production sites.

And did you also know that many of the main brands of cars have Sogefi filters installed which are branded under the manufacturer’s name rather than Sogefi. The Sogefi range of filters is huge and stretches globally.

The Tredegar site covers over 46 thousand square metres with a bespoke factory employing 330 staff. From Tredegar the company produce many styles of filters across Oil Filtration, Fuel Filtration and Air Induction Filters.

I met nigel Duffield, Sales Manager UK & Ireland, at the CV Show where Sogefi were launching their heavy duty filtration brand, Sogefi Pro. “Why don’t you come along to our manufacturing base and see how we do it,” said nigel. now, I’m thinking maybe Milan or some-where equally exotic but nigel quickly said: “Come down to Tredegar and we’ll show you how we manufacture our extensive range of

filters in the Welsh Valleys.”Tredegar it is then! Not more

than a hop and a jump from where this magazine is printed in Merthyr Tydfil. Nigel is based in Birmingham but he was on hand to greet me, as was Chris Jones, Plant Director, Engine Systems Business Unit and a mind of knowledge in all things filtration. Chris started working for Sogefi way back when they started production in Wales, some 33 years ago as an ap-prentice and he has worked his way up to the very top.

Chris gave me an extensive tour of the factory which lasted almost two hours. I was im-pressed with the cleanliness of the operation. No one is allowed on the shop floor with-out the appropriate clothing and footwear. Filtration needs a complete dust-free environ-ment and the whole production area is sealed from the outside world.

One tends to think that the UK manufacturing base has been decimated in recent years but at Tredegar Sogefi make a substantial range of filters from the raw materials right through to the impressively boxed final product. Tons of plastic in small particulate form are stored in large bags and processed by injection moulding into compo-

nents; sheets of aluminium are delivered on large drums and are pressed into the final shape of the specific filter, before be-ing assembled by machine and by hand diligently by a dedicat-ed workforce. Only the screws and O Rings are bought in!

The paper for the filters ar-rives in cut sizes on giant roles and it is pleated before being sealed with plastic ends. Some of the filters are chevron style – a Sogefi patent - but most have standard pleats.

As you would expect, the whole production is regulated and certificated by ISO TS 16949. The company has pre-ferred status with many brands of vehicles.

Sogefi manufactures filters for eight of the top ten selling cars in the UK; Ford Fiesta and Focus, Vauxhall Corsa and As-tra, Nissan Qashqai, VW Polo, Fiat 500 and the Nissan Juke.

On top of that they manufac-ture for Jaguar Land Rover and many more high-profile brands. Because manufacturers some-times prefer, the Sogefi brand will not appear on the end product and the dedicated car manufacturer’s brand will be stamped on the filter, but even though their brand is missing,

> continued from page 23 most of the popular cars will have a Sogefi-made filter in-stalled.

Around 33% of the produc-tion at the Tredegar site is for the aftermarket trade through the FRAM, CoopersFiaam, Pur-flux and manufacturer’s brands which are available from most of the major factors in the UK.

Throughout the group, Sogefi’s success has been un-derpinned by its dedication to innovation and cutting-edge solutions to optimise the ef-ficiency, effectiveness, weight and environmental compatibil-ity of its products. The cabin air filters have been developed with 100% recyclable packaging that, in addition to hermetically

sealing the product, also offers complete protection against dust and moisture, optimises transportation costs and frees up more storage space thanks to its smaller footprint.

The Sogefi brand is available from most of the UK’s factor-ing companies. Nigel Duffield said: “Sogefi filters are fitted as original equipment on eight of the top ten selling cars in the UK as standard and we ensure the same equipment is avail-able to the aftermarket through all the major factoring compa-nies. Other filters may be a few pence cheaper, but our filters are made from the very best materials and have been tested thoroughly.

“It is important, with these filters, to fit the original equip-ment as designed for the car. The filter will protect the overall performance of the car and failure to fit original equipment is fraught with danger. Other filters might look similar but our production techniques en-

sure complete safety – garages should not take chances with filters.”

Clearly Sogefi is aware of companies copying its products, but it became very clear on my factory visit that as so much work has gone into the prod-uct initially to get it to market, and each filter that comes off the production line at Tredegar is quality checked before it is boxed, it is almost impossible for cheaper alternatives to have the same design and material for it to work effectively.

It is like buying a cheap oil for your prized possession on the drive. Cars are manufactured to a specific standard these days and it is most important to fit OE quality parts. Filters are no different – in fact they are the most sensitive part of a car in protecting the engine and the emissions.

Sogefi is a major player in the filter market and they have got there by hard work and because of their attention to detail.

their high-value content means bigger margins. and batteries, almost all of which failed come the winter, now fail across the year as a result of increased power drains from convenience options such as beefed-up en-tertainment systems and, where fitted, start-stop technology.

looking for a bigger slice of the aftermarket’s battery seg-ment is Banner, which under new boss lee Quinney is looking to build on successful 2014/15 financial results.

The staffordshire business’ first objective is to increase the depth and diversity of the bat-tery line-up, while also drawing on its strengthening Oe pedi-

gree. The company says up to 90 percent of all new cars built from this year will feature stop-start technology, and Banner has the products to tap into that

Ignition and batteries segments provide workshops with a useful regular income stream, and the profits aren’t bad, writes Richard Barnett.

There are various spark plug technologies for different engine demands, but quality in afetrmarket spark plugs will be as high as those fitted to a new car rolling down the production line.

demand. “Since 2011 Banner has in-

vested a total of more than 30 million at its Linz-Leonding pro-duction plant, some 20 million of which has been dedicated to creating production capac-ity for its environment-friendly AGM start-stop batteries,” Ban-ner says.

The Banner Running Bull range uses absorbent glass mat and enhanced flooded bat-tery techniques. “Standing as a valve-regulated nonwoven bat-tery (VRLA), five Running Bull AGM batteries with capacities of 60Ah, 70Ah, 80Ah, 92Ah and 105Ah, provide comprehensive coverage of today’s UK vehicle parc,” Banner says.

The company has introduced an online portal for rapid tech-nical look-up. Users enter the car’s registration number to see which battery is relevant in that application. Information supplied includes part number, capacity, power rating and VAT-inclusive price. The portal also has information on where the battery is located in the vehicle and an estimated fitting time.

“When it comes to helping the industry source the optimum specification battery by vehicle registration, this latest service solution from Banner Batter-ies is incredibly user-friendly in terms of its functionality,” says recently appointed country manager Lee Quinney.

“It presents the aftermar-ket with access to the highest quality replacement batteries

available from such a prominent OE supplier. Indeed Banner Bat-teries’ OE pedigree with such leading household vehicle man-ufacturers such as Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Skoda and VW is something that we intend to aggressively drive home here in the UK.”

Spark plugs, despite their extended service lives, eventu-ally need replacing, and for the workshop there can be lit-tle choice in the replacement used as engines become more plug-specific. Denso’s product manager, Nick Thomas, says there are various spark plug technologies for different en-gine demands, but quality in afetrmarket spark plugs will be as high as those fitted to a new car rolling down the production line.

“The main difference in the various types of spark plugs lies in their performance. Denso

always tries to employ cutting-edge technologies in production to ensure superior operation of the engine for as long as pos-sible,“ Thomas says.

“The aftermarket has fewer restrictions for car manufactur-ers, so Denso manufactures spark plugs based on the inter-nal standards using in-house patented technologies, such as U-shaped groove, ultra-thin irid-ium centre electrode; – the two counter electrodes technology and super ignition plug technol-ogy. All these innovations are implemented in Iridium Power, Iridium Tough, Iridium Racing, SIP and TT Spark Plugs.“

The Denso TT spark plug is the first with thin electrodes made without using precious metals. “The plugs have a nickel centre and ground electrodes with a diameter of 1.5mm, which is smaller than the stand-ard plugs. Thanks to this option, Denso TT Plugs demonstrate higher spark power and provide more effective ignition of air-fuel mixture,“ Thomas says.

“In terms of ignition param-eters, plugs are close to iridium plugs and allow a reduction in fuel consumption. This is achieved through complete combustion of mixture in the cylinder while engine perfor-mance is improved.“

When it comes to spark plugs, GSF says demand is consistent throughout the year, the market remaining stable but helped by

A long-established part of the UK aftermarket, NGK Spark Plugs UK has celebrated 40 years being a UK subsidi-ary of the Japanese parent company, which was founded in the 1930s. Expanding its range from spark plugs to glow plugs and gas tempera-ture sensors, its research and development takes eight per-cent of global turnover.

“We are looking at other product groups and will in-troduce them when we are confident that they will add value to our range and im-prove our offering to our customers, but we will never take our eye off our core products,” says NGK UK automotive director Marko Wowczyna.

“Our vision is to maintain the market positions enjoyed by the core products that have grown over many years and to work in part-nership with our customers. As a company we will develop and enhance our service and continue to add value.”

the higher-value products now required.

But while there’s less chance of getting away selling infe-rior-quality components, many workshops still do not realise this, as the multi-branch distrib-utor points out: not all garages recognise the absolute impor-tance of spark plug selection in ensuring vehicles power, ef-ficiency, fuel consumption and emissions are optimised. GSF suggest quality spark plugs are a key way for garages to ensure customer satisfaction, and re-peat business, as vehicles will run better between services.

“The development of new plug technologies has been ac-celerated by VMs seeking ever greater economy and efficiency. The 15,000 or 20,000 mile service intervals, pushed by these same VMs to keep pence per mile running costs down – and fleet sales up, place tremendous demands on plugs. This is multiplied as they may only be changed every second or third interval, so it’s just not worth cutting corners.“

When it comes to batteries GSF says last year’s sales were the best in many years, and by offering Bosch, Banner and Vetech, cover all price points, but avoid low-quality, unrelaible units.

“Our battery programme is definitely aimed at covering all of the top end of the market requirement,” says Jonny West, Managing Director, GSF Car Parts. “We’ve stayed away from ‘budget batteries’ for some time - they won’t cope reliably with the power demands of modern vehicles.”

AlWayS inTenT on providing its customers with products that allow them to

compete as proactively as possible and across as many fronts as they are willing to consider, Manbat is delighted to introduce a brilliant new range of chargers under the highly respected nOCO brand name.

“We are delighted to have agreed a distribution ar-rangement with nOCO for a range of high quality chargers and battery boosters,” said marketing manager, Myles Pemberton. “nOCO is the premium brand in the US, where their products are the benchmark for performance, reliability and design.

“The charger range con-sists of three models, all naturally with smart charg-ing technology, which means they can remain permanently connected, as once they’ve charged the battery, they are

designed to maintain it to en-sure it remains in the best possible condition, whatever and wherever the application.

“Starting with the Genius G1100UK, which is a 1.1-amp charger for smaller batteries between 2.2 and 40ah for ap-plications such as motorcycles, aTVs and jet skis. it is suitable for both 6 and 12-volt batter-ies and will also provide an excellent maintenance option for larger applications like cars, motorhomes, boats and even commercial vehicles (CV).

“The G3500UK is a ver-satile 3.5-amp charger that is destined to become the most popular model as it provides the charg-ing capacity for the bulk of normal applications, catering for any vehicle with a battery in the range of 1.2 to 120ah.

as well as suitable for 6 and 12-volt batteries,

both the G3500UK and G1100UK feature a standby mode and have staged leD charge displays to show the battery’s current state of charge.

“The top of the range ‘professional’ charger is the G7200UK, which at 7.2-amps, provides the power required for the larg-est 230ah battery in either 12 or 24-volt form. in addi-tion to its immense charge capacity, it also incorporates several specialist charging modes designed to recover severely discharged batter-ies that will no longer accept a ‘normal’ charge.”

CONSUMABLES

Richard Barnett on consumables and everything you need in your workshop.

They’re the un-sung heroes of the workshop – the con-sumables that keep a business ticking over.

they aren’t necessarily used on a car, but they play a part in get-ting a car repaired. And if they don’t do that, they might help to keep a garge clean and tidy.

Consumbles covers a wide area, from the plastic bolts used to fix a number plate in place to barrier cream and tempo-rary plastic seat covers. Many consumables products are in-dispensible, despite their low

profile.the Parts Alliance’s consuma-

bles’ offering is managed by CeS’ Simon Moore, and the offering is marketed under the Autosessive name. Some prod-ucts are also sold under the Parts Alliance’s OWL private la-bel name.

Air-conditioning consumables are increasingly popular, the PA reports, and the line-up in-cludes leak detectors and leak stoppers, lubricants, flushes and odour controls.

According to GSF, which has been developing its con-

sumables range recently, this is a highly competitive sector, but price is not the be-all and end-all. “therese are of course price-sensitive products, but we’re hearing from trade cus-tomers all the time that quality needs to be absolutely reliable too,” says GSF Garage essen-tials manager, John Wright.

Much of the GSF range comes under the Vetech brand name, and one of its most re-cent additions is a rain-repellent screenwash and traffic film re-mover. It’s joined by anti-freeze and a full complement of engine

oils. Latex and latex-free gloves, oil-absorbing granules and blue roll are also available under the Vetech name.

“Vetech is competitive be-cause it’s generally shorter ranges, with everything bought direct from the best manufac-turers in big quantities,” Wright says.

Connect Workshop Consuma-bles, which is part of the Toll Connection Group, has ex-panded its counter-top carousel range, and added more trim clips as well as an all-new sump plugs and washers carousel, as well as one for blade fuses.

“Purchasing OEM trim clips can be an expensive business and this has led to the introduc-tion of Connect’s first trim clip carousel (part number 36500) two years ago. It immediately proved to be a winner with both motor factors and their custom-ers, offering the most asked-for trim clips in a convenient, easy to access counter-top display,

and most importantly, incredible value for money, with a massive cost saving over the equivalent OEM parts,” Connect Workshop Consumables says.

“The new trim clip carousel (part number 36812) contains 36 different clips (including 19 new clips new to the Connect range), presented in 8-10 clip easy-open packs. Clearly la-belled, the clips’ replacement OEM references are included on the pack. The new sump plug carousel (part number 36810) contains 32 popular plugs (sold singly), together with four popular replacement sump plug washers. A full range of re-placement sump plug washers is also available from Connect.”

A just-published Connect ac-rousels catalogue includes 1:1 scale illustrations, making it possible to supply the correct replacement part every time. “The new catalogue also in-cludes the Connect anaerobic and adhesive range which has now grown to 17 high qual-ity products, including nutlock; retainer; screwlock and seal; studlock; sleeve and bush re-tainer; quick metal repair putty; aluminium repair putty; clear, black and white silicone seal-ants; high-temperature instant gasket in a powercan; pipe seal-ant; brake and air line sealant; orange instant gasket and su-perglue,” Connect says.

Purchasing OEM trim clips can be an expensive business and this has led to the introduction of Connect’s first trim clip carousel

If you were to say to someone you owned a Volvo Polestar, they would most probably not have the faintest idea what you

were talking about. Now, before all the males in the room start having wild thoughts on the use of the word ‘Polestar’ I need to explain that ‘Polestar’ is not a dirty word - more a word that means a very fast car. Let me explain.

The Volvo V60 T6 Polestar is in simple terms a very fast sports estate; with the added boost of a dual-exhaust, mad colour scheme, boy racer body

kit and of course an engine that is the size of the moon that also happens to produce 345bhp.

The V60 Polestar is fitted with a 3.0 litre 6-speed automatic, and thanks to AWD, it will power you to the moon (0-60mph in real terms) in just under 4.9 seconds - making it a very nice little sprint machine indeed.

on the road it’s a little bit controlling truth be told, due to the masses of computing power on board and with the AWD sys-tem, it sometimes feels like it’s a very naughty dog trying to get out of its muzzle to chase the neighbour’s cat down the road.

But then in the blink of an eye, it all comes together and you feel like you are in total control, by giving you lots of feedback and it even feels like the V60 is teaching you how to handle it, with its masses of grip which is very reassuring.

The V60 T6 also has an ab-surdly long list of safety features available depending on what model you choose. The V60 is fitted with advanced electronic controls to improve handling and driving experience. These include Corner Traction Control, which boosts agility by automat-ically braking the inner driven

wheel as extra power is applied to the outer wheel. This ‘torque vectoring’ improves turn-in to help reduce the car’s under-steer.

The V60 also has one of the world’s most advanced stability control systems – the high-tech DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control) - reduces the

33

likelihood of skids. In addition to this, there is Volvo’s blind-spot information system that uses sensors mounted below each door mirror to detect ve-hicles creeping alongside the car. When a vehicle is detected, a warning light is displayed to alert you not to change lanes. Cameras and radar sensors are also mounted towards the front of the car which then scans the road ahead for traffic. For instance, if you happen to be closing in on an object - a car or building, for example - at a rate that suggests that a crash is immanent, the V60’s collision-detection system will give an audible beep and cast a red warning light onto the windscreen to inform you that you may be in danger.

So, to sum up, the V60 Pole-star is a stylish, fast and very well-equipped car. That’s the thing with a Volvo; they really do major on safety.

So, if you do happen to come across the V60 Polestar in your travels, don’t even think of tak-ing it on. I don’t care what car you bring to the party, the V60 will leave you feeling a little bit lacking in the gentleman de-partment and you will then be forced to return home nursing a much bruised ego.

Finding diesel injector ports difficult to clean?

ParT oF the Laser Tools’ specialist range for diesel en-gines, this kit (part number 6101) pro-

vides everything for efficient cleaning of the injector port and seating surface prior to fit-ting new injectors. Suitable for a wide range of vehicles, and helps to avoid blow-back due to poorly seated injectors.

The kit contains three brass coated steel wire brushes for cleaning the carbon deposits from the inner side walls of the port and two silicone-ny-lon brushes for cleaning the base / injector seat area. These silicone-nylon brushes are spe-cially designed to give a smooth and consistent finish to the aluminium surface, particularly important on the base sealing

area, where ordinary steel wire brushes will tear and abrade the aluminium seat surface, mean-ing that the seat area may have to be recut.

a set of six plugs (plus inser-tion rod) are provided to seal off the injector nozzle ports at the bottom of the main injector port, to stop any carbon or dirt entering the combustion cham-ber during the cleaning process, and a thin bore wire brush is provided to clean the injector nozzle port.

The technician will find the set really useful for this tricky job. Terrific value and available now from your local Laser Tools supplier, priced at £74.94 (+ VaT), but remember to check for the best prices and special offers.

When dismantling a suspension strut sometimes the securing nut can be difficult to access and the central strut itself needs to be held still while the nut is undone. this new shock absorber tool Kit (part number 6182) is designed to overcome these problems and make the job quick and easy.

the secret is the go-through design of the sockets and ratchet. this clever design allows the strut lock extensions to go right through the middle of the ratchet and socket. Five different strut lock extensions are included, to fit a variety of applications. seven go-through deep sockets (16, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22 and 24mm) are included, plus a sliding t-bar.

Once the spring is compressed and the top plate is free, simply choose the correct strut lock extension and socket. then fit the socket and the ratchet handle, and fit the strut lock straight through. the central strut is held steady, and the securing nut is quickly removed - making what can be an awkward job very easy.

a range of specialist strut nut sockets compatible with this set is also available, for example, 3466 strut nut tools, 5544 and 5581 mercedes-Benz strut nut sockets, and 5754 strut nut Kit.

this timesaver is available now from your laser tools stockist at a typical price of £116.84 (plus Vat), but remember to check for the best prices and special offers.

latest cars in an independent

workshop isn’t unusual these

days, but does the workshop

have the necessary technical

capabilities to tackle the job?

For a workshop owner it’s

frustrating to turn a job away

because they don’t have the

right tools, and for the car own-

er it means there’s less choice

in where they can take their car.

The independent might be walk-

ing distance away from their

home, the main dealer 10 miles

down the road. Apart from the

inconvenience for the motorist,

where’s the choice?

This deal is good for GSF

and Autologic, but ultimately

it’s good for the motorist. It’s

important suppliers and dis-

tributors support independent

workshops because the more

choice there is when it comes

to car servicing and repairs, the

better.

they can be trusted to deliver

performance, reliability and lon-

with 150,000 replacements

completed. This makes battery

problems comfortably the num-

ber one cause of breakdowns

- some 25% ahead of tyre prob-

lems occupying a distant sec-

ond spot.“The challenge for GSF is to

convince people that batteries

which look alike, really won’t

all perform alike and that qual-

ity products repay the fractional

price differences many times

over,” said Jonny West, Man-

aging Director. “Garages taking

time to look into build quality,

Amp hour (Ah) and cold crank-

ing amp (CCA) ratings, along

with price are realising Vetech

offers exceptional value.”

Other means of appraisal are

not always reliable. Using ‘plate

count’ for example, can prove

misleading; OE manufacturers

consistently achieve high lev-

els of performance with fewer

plates because their oxide mix is

very dense. Budget makers will

often resort to shorter or thinner

plates to cut costs, despite high

plate counts.GSF Car Parts further warn

that some suppliers still even of-

fer aftermarket programmes of

hybrid batteries instead of mod-

ern day calcium-calcium batter-

ies. These are much cheaper to

produce but no cars made after

1999 have had hybrid batteries

fi tted from new. The advice from

vent leakage and ensure safety,

as well as high quality active

components all within a rugged

structure.New for this year, are two

leading Vetech AGM Premium

Excel start-stop batteries. These

Valve Regulated Lead Acid

(VRLA) batteries incorporate

a pressure relief valve whilst

electrolyte in the cell is locked

into a fi berglass absorbent glass

mat (AGM). The batteries are

‘maintenance free’, with mini-

mal water consumption. They

can be deeply discharged more

often, without loss of function-

ality, and deliver over 30% more

cranking power to run the latest

micro-hybrids. The AGM batter-

ies, equivalent to an 096 and

an 019, cover over 7.5 million

vehicles across 2,500 model

types. VW were among early adop-

ters of micro-hybrid technology,

which dates back over 20 years,

but has been rapidly stand-

ardised in recent years. BMW

are amongst a raft of volume

manufacturers who’ve stand-

ardised start-stop in the drive

estimated over 40% of cars on

the road will feature start-stop

majority of new cars now have it

GSF is to avoid them at all costs

as they simply won’t cope with

typical short journey driving and

will self-discharge more quickly

too, creating problems, particu-

larly in cold weather or when

unused over extended periods.

Batteries that are underpow-

ered, wrongly specifi ed or infe-

rior are very likely to become

deeply discharged. Modern bat-

teries are simply much more

sensitive, requiring specifi c ex-

tended charging routines. As a

result, the alternator is typically

unable to fully recharge the bat-

tery with average short journey

driving patterns. This constant

state of undercharge results in

acid stratifi cation which will dra-

matically shorten the working

life of the battery.

Cutting corners is now in-

creasingly becoming a false

economy. Where in the past

cheap replacements might have

‘done the job’ there’s growing

realisation that today it’s a risky

gamble to take with a customer.

Once you factor in the worsen-

ing consequences of ‘fl at bat-

tery’ too, like ECU impact or lost

radio codes, the arguments in

favour of quality become con-

vincing say GSF.

The Vetech Premium Excel

GSF CAR Parts are

launching their all-

new Vetech battery

programme to UK

independent garag-

es this Autumn.

The Vetech Premium Excel

battery programme offers 95%

UK parc coverage. With all Vet-

ech batteries sourced direct

from the world’s leading global

OE manufacturers, GSF say

they can be trusted to deliver

performance, reliability and lon-

gevity that far exceeds budget

batteries. GSF’s promise is

backed up with an impressive 3

years’ warranty.

The other primary brands in

GSF’s good-better-best pro-

gramme are Banner and Bosch.

All trade customers can also

now benefi t from GSF’s pio-

neering scrap battery service

too. The service offers free col-

lection, plus a payment for all

old batteries, minimising hassle

whilst ensuring scrap batteries

are recycled in the most ecolog-

ically sustainable way possible.

Demands on the humble car

battery have never been higher,

thanks to the host of electrical

gadgets and conveniences in-

corporated in modern cars. This

not only includes sat nav, air

con, heating, lighting and audio

but also core systems for se-

curity, safety and engine man-

agement. In fact, today’s small

family cars draw over three

times as much electrical current

as their 1970s equivalents.

Whilst power output and per-

formance have undoubtedly im-

Vetech to light up battery salesproved, life expectancy hasn’t

for the hard pressed battery.

The AA’s 2012 Breakdown Re-

port reveals nearly half a mil-

lion battery-related call outs,

functions including adjustments

such as the technical informa-

and a large database of wiring

diagrams. The customer man-

agement feature allows data to

be recorded and saved under

the vehicle registration number

for future reference during the

diagnostic procedure.”

Meanwhile Texa has launched

its new website (texa.co.uk)

which features channels dedi-

cated to YouTube. Rather than

being a traditional company-

promoting website that owed

more to a paper brochure than

something for the internet age,

the new website is said to be

“full of content and technical

data”.“From this site you can, for

example, view videos dedicat-

ed to the TEXA products and

software, request product dem-

onstrations, download, print or

read brochures, view a com-

prehensive photo gallery for

each tool, consult the vehicle

diagnostic coverage which is

always updated and available

for the five diagnostic software

platforms (car, truck, power-

sports, offhighway, marine),”

Texa says. Also getting the message out

is Andrew Page, with its Me-

ga Wisebuys catalogue, which

covers everything from hand

tools to large equipment. And

for those workshops looking

to install new equipment, the

multi-branch operation has ex-

panded its garage equipment

sales division with five new staff

previously employed by Unipart

Automotive. Of those five, four

will be regional garage equip-

ment specialists and the other a

dedicated marketing manager.

“The integration of garage

equipment sales with AP-Tech

will make Andrew Page the mar-

ket leader in garage equipment,

with a range including capital

equipment, diagnostics, air con,

hand tools and training,” says

Simon Mullin, Andrew Page

Sales and Marketing Director.

latest cars in an independent

workshop isn’t unusual these

days, but does the workshop

have the necessary technical

capabilities to tackle the job?

For a workshop owner it’s

frustrating to turn a job away

because they don’t have the

right tools, and for the car own-

er it means there’s less choice

in where they can take their car.

The independent might be walk-

ing distance away from their

home, the main dealer 10 miles

down the road. Apart from the

inconvenience for the motorist,

where’s the choice?

This deal is good for GSF

and Autologic, but ultimately

it’s good for the motorist. It’s

important suppliers and dis-

tributors support independent

workshops because the more

choice there is when it comes

to car servicing and repairs, the

better.

SMMT’S CoMMuniCaTionS Manager, Janet Wilkinson, has been awarded an MBE for ser-vices to the Motor industry and Charity in the Queen’s Birth-day Honours List for 2015. Janet, who has spent virtually all her career at the SMMT, has been responsible for many of the activities and events the organisation runs to help pro-mote the industry to media and other stakeholders. She has also mentored dozens of young people who have gone on to enjoy successful careers in the industry.

Speaking on her award, Ja-net said, “i am thrilled and humbled to receive such an award. i never thought the work i did would merit recognition but to have been honoured today is a tribute to all the support and encouragement i have received from colleagues in the industry. The automotive sector is a great industry with fantastic, committed people and a hugely professional and passionate automotive media. The uK industry has had its ups and downs but is now re-established as an interna-tional success story and i am delighted to be a small part of that success.”

Mike Hawes, SMMT CEo said, “Janet’s award is richly deserved and will be applauded by everyone who knows her. To have given a lifetime’s work to one sector is increasingly unu-sual but to devote that career to a single organisation is even more special. Everyone at the SMMT and across the industry will be delighted, especially as she is someone who has given so selflessly for a number of charities, especially WoMaC (Women on the Move against Cancer).”

STunT drivEr Terry Grant broke the record for driving the world-famous Goodwood Hillclimb in a car on two wheels. He drove his nissan nismo Juke rS, with Yokohama Geolandar Suv tyres, up the hill at this year’s ‘Festi-val of Speed’ breaking his own world record that from 2011.

Goodwood is renowned for the greatest collection of motor-sport cars and personalities but also doing things differently. in 2011, Grant set the record for driving a car up the 1.16 mile hill course on two wheels, at 2 minutes and 55 seconds.

This year he took 45 seconds off the time, recording 2m10s, an impressive speed of over 32mph.

He’s one the world’s top stunt drivers, notably for two-wheeled driving, so the record’s probably his for some time.

The tyres were standard Geo-landar Suv tyres, highlighting their strength and reliability.

James Brown of Yokohama HPT Ltd, said; “i’m delighted to offer Terry our congratulations, again. His performance in 2011

was impressive. To go back out again this year and smash his own record by such a massive margin is a great achievement.”

ManBaT, THE uK’s top auto-motive battery distributor, has boosted its mar-

keting team with the recruitment of Toni Williams as its marketing co-ordinator, to work alongside marketing manager, Myles Pem-berton across all market sectors.

“although new to the bat-tery business, Toni brings a raft of skills that will help Man-bat increase the depth and quantity of the information we communicate to customers,” said Pemberton.

“it was clear from the start Toni has the vision and experi-ence we were looking for and these skills, allied to her natural creativity, mean we can provide a greater range of material with

the visual impact we require.“our short, medium and long

terms goals are to help our cus-tomers sell more batteries. So whether we need to support our

existing customers in the auto-motive sector with point-of-sale material in relation to the growth in Start-Stop battery technology, develop the branding for our market leading numax leisure battery range or design support literature for our industrial bat-tery division, Toni has the depth of ability required to support them.”

Toni said: “although the au-dience is very different to my previous design roles, the key principles remain the same and i really look forward to making a positive contribution to such a dynamic business in such wide ranging markets.”
