Last month’s dinner ceremony for the 2016 Galileo Hall of Merit inductees was a huge

success. Nearly 200 attendees gathered at the Hyatt Fisherman’s Wharf to celebrate and

honor 13 distinguished alumni and faculty. Dr. Leonard Compagno, the world’s foremost

shark expert, made his acceptance speech via video from South Africa. The late Michael

Smuin danced on screen to Fancy Free. Arthur Woo gave us a lecture on

entrepreneurship and 99 years young Dr. Frank Brucia reminisced about the old days and

his early dental career. Gwen Chan brought along 50 guests with her, matching Woo’s

contingent. Harry du Young came all the way from Hong Kong to accept his award and

discuss filmmaking.

For a complete list of inductees and photos of the event, go to

Odds ‘n’ Ends: Enrico Banducci, owner of Banducci’s where Ray Piccinini, one of our

HoM inductees, worked early in his restaurant career and where he got the idea for

dressing up as the Easter Bunny to bring joy to sick kids, had the greatest apple pie, made

by his mother and occasionally served at the restaurant. Patrons such as North Beach

artist Sam Provenzano, had coffee there daily and apple pie when it was available . . . . .

Bill Weber, the muralist of the Galileo Star Project wall mural, tells the story of Benny

Goodman, the famous clarinetist of the 20s, 30s and 40s Big Band Era (Goodman, Tommy

Dorsey, Glenn Miller) who composed a clarinet concerto as well as many standard hits of

the day. Goodman’s daughter lived on Telegraph Hill and passed her father’s mural,

drawn by Weber, on the building at the northwest corner of Broadway and Columbus.

She thanked him for keeping her father’s image alive. The Galileo mural has one mural

so far with two more to go . . . . .

Original Joe’s new Westlake location is open for business and is it ever an improvement

over the old place. It is modern, airy, welcoming, comfortable, yet has maintained its

Joe’s atmosphere. And the food’s good, too . . . . .

Galileo has a new principal, Dr. Michael J. Reimer. Enthusiastic, personable, showing

great leadership, he comes from Roosevelt Middle School, the perfect person to lead

Galileo toward its 100th

anniversary in 2021 . . . . .

Guests at the HoM dinner were amazed at the diversity of fields our alumni had excelled

in after graduation/attendance. They are a collective treasure and have a lot to offer

current students. They should be invited to speak to classes or at assemblies to share their

knowledge and experiences and inspire students . . . . .

ONCE A LION, ALWAYS A LION:

The following is taken from the dedication of the Fall 1936 Telescope yearbook, a message

from then Principal Fred W. Koch:

“Do you ever think what it will mean to you in the years to come to know that, wherever you

are in this big world of ours, you will meet men and women who come from Galileo?

Many of them are successful in business and professional life. Five years ago, when on a

trip to the Orient, I met them in China, in Japan, and in the Philippines. I found six

Galileans on the steamer. Two were ship’s officers, three were members of the crew working

their way around the Pacific during their summer vacation, and one, a young engineer

returning to China. I am told that there is a Galileo Club in Manila.

Some of our former pupils are in Hollywood and may be seen in pictures. Several of our best

orchestra leaders in California are Galileo graduates. One of our boys is a teacher at West

Point and many are school teachers in this state, nor are our athletes without fame.

My greatest pleasure is to work among the boys and girls of Galileo and to know that,

wherever I go in this or other countries, there are men and women from whom I can expect a

friendly greeting. It is to your interest to keep in touch with your class and schoolmates after

graduation.”

And so it goes. Our Hall of Merit and the Sports Hall of Fame validate and confirm Mr.

Koch’s vision of the future. Early on he saw the value of keeping in touch with classmates.

The Galileo Alumni Association was established for this purpose. Go Lions, wherever you

are!

Stay interested . . .

Between the Lions

by Bettie Grinnell

SPRING 2016

Greetings Mighty Lions! Here’s what happening at Galileo these days.

GALILEO MURAL IS FINISHED AND IS BEAUTIFUL!!!

The mural of Galileo, the mathematician, scientist and physicist, is now complete and it is beautiful!! Bill Weber, a well-known muralist, designed and painted the mural showing Galileo viewing the heavens through a telescope as he sits on his balcony overlooking the city of Florence, Italy, where he was held under “house arrest” for his strong belief that the sun is the center of the universe and our planet, Earth, revolves around the sun. The city of Florence is shown in the mural as well. The official title of the mural is “Galileo, the Scientist.” Stop by and see it and

I will keep you posted as plans develop for the “Galileo, The School" wall mural, and the "Universe" ceiling mural that connects the 2 wall murals. I will also let you know when the GAA will begin to sell stars to individuals that will be placed on the “Universe” ceiling mural. Look for an update on this project in the next edition.

UPDATE ON WILLIAMS SONOMA CIRCLE THE SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP

Our wonderful friends at Williams Sonoma just keep on giving to our faculty and staff. The first in a series of Cooking Demonstrations was held on February 20, 2016, in their beautiful test kitchen right down the street from us. We watched 2 of their chefs prepare and explain three healthy dishes—Spinach and Artichoke Dip with Goat Cheese, Soba Noodles with Broccoli and a Sesame Tamari Glaze, and Quinoa Salad with Radishes, Currants and Mint with a Garlic-Lemon Vinaigrette Dressing. All of us were served full portions of each dish and the food was accompanied by both red and white wine. It was an event full of questions, laughter, commraderie and so much fun.

Williams Sonoma hosted the San Francisco School Volunteer Celebration on April 14, 2016. Galileo nominated Williams Sonoma for the Distinguished Corporate Partner Award and we are so proud that Williams Sonoma chose Galileo as their partner in the Circle The Schools Program. The event was joyful in celebration of all the volunteers do for our schools in San Francisco. We have over 900 volunteers throughout the San Francisco Unified School District.

Cooking demonstration #2 was held on April 20, 2016 and while the menu was similar to the first event, there were new twists and turns and this time we were treated to some delicious brownies that included coconut and coconut oil. All of the Galileo attendees enjoyed the demonstrations, questions, discussions, laughter, and of course the great food and wine. The last of the series of Cooking Demonstrations will be held on May 2, 2016.

RETIRED TEACHER LUNCHEON

Ever wonder what your former teachers do when they retire? One activity that happens every April is the Galileo Retired Teachers Luncheon. The event this year was held on Wednesday, April 6th at the San Rafael Yacht Club, starting at 11:30am. The full menu featured salmon, chicken or pasta with a first course of soup or salad and dessert featuring cake or sorbet. As you can see from their choice of entrees, they do eat well!

Those who attended are: Jack Abad (former Principal #11), Pat Aramendia (former AP), Gene Arnold, Don Baker, Lynda Barnetche, Jim Brown (former AP), Marti Bush, Lily Cai, George Carter, Margaret Chiu (former Principal #15), Herb Chu, Tom Collins, Zvi Danenberg, Sam Dederian, Jerry DeRyan, Madeline Eaton, Marie Eisen, Patti Englander, Fiorenzo Gardin, Pam Gill, Peggy Hill, Pat Holleran, Leslie Hughes, Delores Hunter, Pauline Kahney, Tom Kam, Robert Lew, Daphne Luke, Ralph Madsen (former AP), John Mahoney, Nicki Maxfield, Celeste McCarthy, Steve Merlo, Vivienne Miller, Melinda Olea, John Quinn (former Principal #12), Lonetta Spears, Donna Strazzula, Imogen Swaney, Marilyn Tousey, Marie Utzig, Jean Veit, Patsy Watts, Joan Wlodaver, and Ding Ansel Young.

SAD NEWS

Pieter Roell died on January 16, 2016 in a tragic accident; he was hit and run over by a tour bus in downtown San Francisco. Pieter spent 40 months as a child in the Japanese controlled internment camps of WWII in Indonesia. At age 12 he was separated from his mother and brother and sent to a men’s camp. His father was a forced labourer on the Burma railway, the same railway that inspired the novel, “The Bridge over the River Kwai.” After the war the family moved to Canada. Pieter studied journalism at the University of Western Ontario and worked as a journalist in Ottawa for a period of time

Pieter moved to San Francisco and spent 20 years teaching English at Galileo prior to his retirement. He spent time in retirement as a substitute teacher at Galileo and Balboa. Pieter’s love and commitment to Galileo continues as he directed in his will that a substantial part of his estate be used for a continuing college scholarship fund for Galileo graduates. The first scholarship award will be for graduates of the Galileo Class of 2017.

Eloyde Granucci passed away on March 23, 2016, at the age of 106. She was born in Italy in 1910 and came to America with her family. She graduated from St. Brigid High School in 1928. Miss Granucci spent 28 years as the school secretary at Galileo. She was the secretary to the principal when I started at Galileo (November 16, 1972) and was my introduction to how Galileo runs and how to handle the job.

In her retirement, Eloyde volunteered for many organizations: DeYoung Museum, St. Mary’s Hospital, San Francisco Symphony and St. Stephen School. She loved the opera, cooking, knitting and reading the classics. And she enjoyed the family home at Lake Tahoe.

Judy Berliner Cohen, born during the 2nd world war, died December 7, 2015, another day that will live in infamy for those who loved her. From her first job at Playboy magazine to her final job as a Commissioner of the Marin Superior Court, she was respected by all. During her carrier she served as the chair of committees for the Marin County Bar and was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, an association of the best family attorneys in the county. She came late to the law, first serving for 11 years as an English teacher in San Francisco at Galileo and Lowell High Schools. She was an avid reader and loved window-shopping in Paris, Rome, and Venice just walking the neighborhoods and getting the flavor of the cities. For many years she attended tap dancing classes. But most of all she took the advice of Dr. Pangloss' student, and cultivated her garden.

JROTC

The JROTC program continues to support our community by volunteering and doing plenty of Color Guard events. Some recent events include working with the SF Democratic Committee, going to the SFUSD offices to support our program in allowing JROTC to get independent study credits. Recently, we have just had our triennial inspection, which is what determines our program's success and how the program is as of today. Coming up towards the end of April is our 100th Anniversary JROTC 5K Fun Run in San Francisco. It will allow the JROTC program to be more widely noticed by the public and also giving the cadets an opportunity to fundraise towards the program by running in this 5K. Upcoming on May 7th, we are preparing for our 91st Annual Spring Competition. We are prepared to win first place as always. This competition consists of Girls Drill Team, Boys Flag Team and Drum Corps. We are ready to represent our school, community, and brigade at this event. After Spring comp, we are preparing for our next event and competition at the JCLC Camp Parks at Dublin where we come together as a brigade and participate in different events to gain team building and teamwork skills.

CELESTIAL DRAGON BOAT TEAM

Galileo Celestial Dragons is gearing up for another season of dragon boat races. The excitement begins this weekend with Youth Race. Youth Race is taking place at Lake Merced on Saturday April 23rd. Come out and support the GCD team as they look to start the year off strong. GCD is also looking forward to summer races in both Long Beach and Hong Kong! In order to be able to participate in both of these exciting opportunities GCD needs to fundraise as much as possible. On Sunday May 1st GCD from10am - 4pm will host a paddle-a-thon fundraising event at Lake Merced. Please visit the GCD facebook page for more event details and ways to support the dragon boat racers.

SPRING SPORTS

Varsity Baseball

This is the recent update with 2016 Varsity baseball. We are currently 8-9 overall and 3-4 in league. We have 5 league games remaining, 2 with Washington and 3 with Lincoln. We have an excellent chance of making the play-offs, and we could be a major factor because of the depth of our pitching. The team is led by Senior 2015 co-player of the year, Larry Fonseca, who pitches, catches, and plays shortstop. His defense and offense carry the team, and he could be league MVP again. Other Seniors helping are Daltzwer Oliveros, pitching, and Jared Harper, at 1st base. Junior players Fela Adewusi, utility, and Dylan Fong, infield, are integral members, and also all-City returnees. We have 4 sophomores starting, Christian Aquino, catcher, Jack Dietz, infield and pitcher, Cam Wong, of, and Niko Kashima, of are major contributors. If pitching and defense hold up we are expecting to play at AT&T Park in May for the city championship. Coach Papa

Girls Softball Thanks to a confident starting pitcher, Isabel Saylor, the Lady Lions are off to one of their best starts in many years at 9-1. Isabel is one of four seniors on the squad that have recently produced victories over perennial foes, Washington and Lincoln. The victory over Washington was a classic pitching duel with the Lady Lions pulling out a victory in the top of the seventh inning with risky base running from freshman second baseman Minh Nguyen.

This year’s squad is largely made up of Freshmen as we had a wonderful freshmen turnout. The team has 19 players showing an uptick in student involvement in softball despite multiple other sports during the spring semester.

As the Lady Lions compete for a playoff spot, big remaining games include Washington, Lincoln and Balboa. The Lady Lions beat Lowell this year (first time in 20 years). All games are on Tuesdays and Thursdays with Tuesday games being played at Moscone Playground at 3:30pm.

Let me know what you’d like to hear/read about at Galileo. Bettie on the Beat will be happy to

answer your questions and handle your requests.

LIONS WE NEED YOU!!!!

Galileo (High School) Academy of Science & Technology has the SMALLEST Alumni in San Francisco, What is wrong with our school- what is wrong with our Alumni? Please support your Alma Mater. This may be the last year that the Alumni will be active unless we get some new blood to help out. Donations are good but we need volunteers to help. It’s not a full time job but a few hours a month. LIONS don’t fail our school! Don’t let our Alumni Association go away, we would then be the only High School in S.F. with no Association!

HELLO………………

WE NEED YOU!

PLEASE – PLEASE

Our Board is shrinking, we need your help. Don’t let Galileo be the only school

in San Francisco that doesn’t have an Alumni Association!!! If you would like

to work with current Directors/Committees to further the mission and goals of

the GAA please contact Charlene Mori at 415-441-6445. We need a Secretary,

Publisher for our newsletter, webmaster, and Board Members. All of you

What? Don’t know what to do with all that extra money

you have. Donate to the Galileo Alumni Association.

All donations go directly to the school. The Science

department is strapped for money. Just buying rubber

disposable gloves costs a lot. The printing supplies to

print the Pendulum cost have risen dramatically. Seniors have to now pay

for all their senior activities and graduation events. TAX ID 30-0066848

GALILEO ALUMNI ASSOCIATION FUNDRAISING

Since the state has cut back funding to public schools, many of the activities we enjoyed at Galileo now require outside monies to maintain. To date, GAA has contributed to the school newspaper, sports program, and graduation site. With your help, we hope to do even more in the future.

Because of GAA’s nonprofit status, your donations are tax deductible. When making a contribution, please use a check, rather than send cash, so you have a record. Your cancelled check acknowledges receipt by GAA.

I’m sure you remember doing car washes, bake sales, whatever you could to raise money for your senior activities. Students now have to work even harder to raise these funds. Don’t forget your Alma Mater. GO LIONS!
