Lyle Lovett & Robert Earl Keen…
I was fortunate enough to see the Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl Keen show at Selena Auditorium last Thursday. This performance was only the two artists on stage with two guitars and no bands. The show was very well attended and the Aggie contingency was successfully represented. One thing that I was grateful for was that Keen didn’t play his predictable set of sing-along anthems, choosing instead more obscure songs from his catalog. He did sneak in the obligatory Porch Song, Christmas Song, Bucking Song and of course the Corpus Christi Bay Song to which the audience enthusiastically chimed in. Lovett did do his famous If I Had a Pony on My Boat song but generally speaking and as the majority of Facebook posts would suggest, the crowd was mostly there to see Robert Earl. Corpus Christi definitely loves Robert Earl Keen and his annual Christmas shows at Brewster Street are testimony This show at Selena initially appeared to be more subdued, given the environment, but as the artists loosened up, so did the crowd, and it was open season on shouting out requests for songs as well as anything else that seemed to be on their minds. I must say, the guy behind me had an impressive vocal projection that was probably heard in the next county. The on stage banter between the two old friends was hilarious. Both of these guys are quick witted and have a great sense of humor. Keen told a really funny story about his brother passing out drunk and naked on a park bench at 3 a.m. on Ocean Drive when they used to live in Corpus… the punch line to the cops being, “what are yall doing in Houston?” Lovett also talked about his connection to Corpus when his working class family would take road trips here from Houston when he was a child because that was as far as they could afford to go. They played for two and half straight hours and gave us a great encore. I thought the show was wonderful. It was right up there with the John Prine show at Selena last September. I really love this venue. It’s not so big that you feel out of touch with the performers. The acoustics are very good in there too.
Ray T & the City Crew…On Friday night, I stuck my head into the
Flats Lounge long enough to hear most of Ray T and the City Crew’s (Aransas Pass, TX) first set. They were on fire. Ray had that Stat of his popping wheelies. There’s nothing finer than watching this band shred some ZZ Top or Stevie. They are the classic roadhouse band that has only one speed… kill. The Flats will always be my favorite vampire bar and every Ray T show is epic… they never cease to amaze me. I always envision a scene straight out of From Dusk til Dawn. I keep waiting for
Selma Hayek to slither out some night with a big snake wrapped around her neck. Stop by there and check them out, they play there every Friday.
King Pelican…
Also on Friday, the mega-cool surf band, King Pelican (San Antonio, TX) played Giggity’s. I was a little worried at first whether an all instrumental band could hold a crowd all night, but found out that if you play a steady diet of Dick Dale, The Ventures, The Safaris and NO wimpy Beach Boys, the girls will start wiggling. And wiggle they did. The dance floor stayed full all night. King Pelican is a classic guitar band with Ernest Hernandez III and Dennis Fallon (Two Tons of Steel) both on guitar. Man, their whammy bar sure got a workout that night. We heard such surf classics as Misirlou, Wipe Out and even Secret Agent Man. It was rad!
DO NOT MISS LIST Coming this weekend…
Tonight, Thursday, June 6th, Charlie Hagar & the Captain Legendary Band (Baton Rouge, LA) will bring their Southern roots rocking folk and country mix to the Back Porch. I’ve seen these guys a handful of times now, and am more impressed each time… high energy, good songwriting, no gimmicks.
On Friday, June 7th, the man who brought Snoop Dog to the Anglo-Saxon table, Shinyribs (Austin, TX) aka Kevin Russell will play the Back Porch. You may know Russell as the frontman for the great alternative country band, The Gourds… the guys who showed that even white boys could go for Gin and Juice. I saw Shinyribs at the House of Rock a couple of years ago, and believe me, YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS SHOW!!! Also on Friday, my favorite priest, Father James
Derkits, will bring his little string band, The Naughty Pines, to the Gaff. That will be an early show (5-7) and is extremely family friendly. James filled me with his band, “The Naughty Pines met in the nineties on the banks of the San Marcos River and have been playing music together in various arrangements ever since. In Houston in 2001 James Derkits, Kevin Schubert, and Billy Tweedie all found themselves living in Houston, and they began to focus on their music a bit more, teasing out the bluegrass, jam band, and folk influences in a simplified expression of folk rock harnessed in their guitar, percussion, vocals, and banjo with the occasional mandolin accent. Their songs playfully lift out bits of truth through reflection on mundane and natural everyday encounters.”
And if you find yourself in Corpus Friday night, the show to see is Charlie Sexton with the Nick Tremulis Orchestra at Doctor Rockits. Sexton, formerly known as Little Charlie, is an Austin icon who used to play sideman guitar with Bob Dylan and Joe Ely. He was brought up in the bars of Austin and was tutored by such luminary as Stevie Ray and Jimmy Vaughan and W.C. Clark. He had one big hit in 1985, Beats So Lonely. This should be an interesting show. Honestly, the guy really is talented.
On Saturday, June 8th, the hits keep right on coming. A show I wouldn’t miss for love or money, Ernie Garibay and Cats Don’t Sleep (San Antonio, TX) will be at Giggity’s. Ernie is the brother of the late Randy Garibay (Barbacoa Blues) and is a legend in S.A. This show will be a real deal west side San Antonio rhythm and blues classic. Also on Saturday, the always jumping Tejas Brothers (Ft. Worth, TX) will play the Back Porch. This band, led on accordion and vocals, by the spirited David Perez is like a cross between the Texas Tornados and Speedy Gonzales. They flow from Country to polkas to ballads at a super danceable pace. And finally on Saturday, a man I consider to be a songwriting genius, Alejandro Escovedo and the Sensitive Boys, will play the Executive Surf Club. Escovedo will be honored with a star on the South Texas Walk of Fame earlier in the day. Also to be inducted that day are George Strait, Jeremy Jordan, Oscar Martinez, Bill Barr & the Sons of Texas and Esteban (Steve) Jordan. And that’s the truth!
