Welcome to the Tommy Flowers Institute conference looking at the

Future of Transport

1

With congestion increasing and the impact ofour transport choices on the environmentbecoming more apparent, we are on the vergeof big changes in the way we move around.

Many of us rely on particular modes oftransport for particular types of journey, butin the future will we be able to do that? Willwe need to switch to new modes of transport, powered in different ways? Will we need touse shared transport more often? Will we ownour own vehicles, or will we subscribe tomobility as a service?

Perhaps we’ll find new ways to do things withvirtual or augmented reality which willdrastically reduce the need for us to travel.

We can use data science and artificial intelligence to analyse and optimise thejourneys we do need to make. What will our increasingly connected, smart citiesmean for the way we travel?

The technologies may be there already, so how will we be persuaded to changeour habits? Will it be based on cost, sustainability or something else?

Over the course of this conference, we’re going to look at some of the transportproblems facing Suffolk Council, a local authority in England. The problems we’llexplore are not unique to Suffolk, nor to the UK, they are repeated all around theworld. They won’t be solved by a single magic solution, they are multi-faceted andrequire a multi-disciplinary approach. We’ll need data scientists, fixed and mobilenetwork experts, social scientists, economists, planners and many other types ofpeople from industry and academia to solve them. This is where the TommyFlowers Institute comes in – we are bringing together a diverse group of people tostart solving the problems. We’re glad you’re joining us on the journey.

P.S. This is my first Tommy Flowers Institute conference since taking on this role. Please do come and introduce yourself, I look forward to meeting you all!

Alec Sharp, Founder of OEM and EEMCIt all began with the founding of Old Empire Motorcycles in 2010.Through an absolute passion for everything two-wheeled, Alec Sharpfounded the award winning bespoke OEM house of assembly, describing it as “paying daily homage to the gods of speed and fuel.. aplace where we meet, greet, drill, weld, cut, grind, turn, mill, hammer, roll and notch till our heart’s content.” In 2017 Alec’spassion for the electric motorcycle movement became a reality asEnglish Electric Motor Co (EEMC) was born. Within two years thecompany has become the UK’s #1 ALL electric motorcycle dealershipof Zero Motorcycles & continues to grow their catalogue of vehiclesfrom industry leaders as Super soco, Oset and Sur-ron.

EEMC offers a full range of electric on-road and off-road motorcycles/mopeds/ebikes, at its cosySuffolk HQ. The bulk of EEMC’s rapid success is owed to their hands-on-approach in getting the EVmessage out there, hosting mobile ‘Demo Days’ at various shows across the UK and offering‘Doorstep Demos’ - taking electric motorcycles directly to the client. Alec says “We find ourextended Demo experience provides the user with a more realistic guide to electric transport on adaily basis” and adds “We not only believe that our demonstrations educate the public to thebenefits of electric transport, but also to the benefits of a more environmentally friendly and costeffective approach to travel.” EEMC is hosting events at their HQ throughout 2019, for the public toexperience the electric movement first-hand with local food & good company. With EVtechnological advances and Government encouragement toward more sustainable modes oftransport, EEMC will be challenged to meet the demands of those embracing the EV movement andchanging their way of life. “English Electric Motor Co is more than happy to take up that challengein promoting the world of electric motorcycles!” - Alec Sharp, EEMC.
