The Future of Construction
By Loren McGee
What is a…
• Architect?• Engineer?• Urban Planner?
Do you want your homes to look like this???
Me Neither!
I Prefer This… Over This…
What can be done to keep that from happening?
Well…
It’s all about the materials!
• Be sure that when you’re moving somewhere that the materials used were/are up to date and will be able to stand the test of time!
Problem: Most places are many years old and were built a long time ago!
• Unfortunately, these buildings are lost causes… but there is hope for the future, and that hope lies in…
Using new construction materials!
Examples of “innovative materials” include…
-Cement with more concrete in the mixture rather than mostly sand and gravel.- Windows that are self adhered.-Waterproof and fireproof materials.-Stronger bonding chemicals.-Solar panels to reduce power consumption.-Heavily reinforced metals.
But won’t it be expensive to build houses?
Actually…
• These new and more reliable materials only tend to be 10-20% more expensive, which on average is only a couple hundred dollars.
How can I find out more?
• You can contact local stores such as Home Depot or Lowe’s and they’ll be more than happy to inform you about these materials in way that is easy to understand.
Local examples…
• Being that UC’s DAAP program is one of the most competitive schools for urban planners in the country, their building is a great example of one innovatively built.
