Magnolia and Best Buy are known for providing the fun
stuff, the happy stuff, the products that provide us joy,
and the services that reduce techno stress. But there
are a few other things that both Magnolia and Best Buy
are doing to make you feel even better about shopping
at these locations, and that’s the good these stores
and employees are doing in their communities and
for the environment. As Laura Bishop, Chief Corporate
Responsibility and Sustainability Officer told us, “It’s
really about harnessing the goodwill of the company
in a concentrated way. Our company is based on
values-driven leadership and doing the right thing for
the broader community good. So we look across our
business for ways to support our communities, the
business, people and the environment.”
Helping Others
Whether it’s finding a family the perfect home
entertainment system, matching an audiophile with
the right set of speakers, or helping a family create the
ultimate outdoor entertaining space, Magnolia and
Best Buy are all about helping others. But when it comes
to youth, they take that help one giant leap further. In the
last decade alone, Magnolia and Best Buy have served
4.5 million young people through community programs,
grants and partnerships.
One of these programs is Best Buy Teen Tech
Centers. These interactive learning spaces help teens
explore technology to discover new interests, collaborate
with one another and prepare for the tech jobs of the
future. As Laura told us, “At these centers, underserved
teens get the technology training and the tools they need
to be successful in school and their future careers.”
Magnolia itself is helping teens at the Children’s
Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Here,
they’ve helped create a Teen Lounge: a room inside the
hospital specially designed with teens in mind, with a huge
65" TV, multiple video game systems, a computer station,
game area and so much more. It’s the ultimate place for
any teen to hang out, with the idea to create “the best
basement in the neighborhood.” Now these teens, who
can be in the hospital for weeks or even months at a time,
have a place to kick back and be a teen with their friends
and families.
When it comes to giving back financially, the
Best Buy Foundation donates millions each year to local
and national nonprofit partners. Since 1999, the Best Buy
Foundation has donated more than $333 million. “We
focus our giving on nonprofit organizations that offer
hands-on access to technology education and tools that
teens need to help them better prepare for future success,”
Laura told us.
Magnolia and Best Buy, with the help of employees
and customers, have also raised nearly $40 million for the
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Last holiday season
alone, $18.2 million was raised. This is enough to pay for
12,000 days of chemotherapy or 3,600 days of intensive
care costs at the Memphis hospital and its affiliate clinics,
which treat children with cancer and other catastrophic
illnesses. These donations help ensure that no family ever
receives a bill from St. Jude, for anything.
Helping Mother Nature
While helping others is of vital importance, it’s also important
to ensure we all have a planet to enjoy. Thankfully, from
Magnolia and Best Buy vendor partners to their own private
label brands, they are working to reduce their footprint, and
your footprint, on the world around us.
The Geek Squad brand has recently moved to hybrid
vehicles for their Geekmobiles. “That change, along with
many improvements in our store operations, has contributed
to a 47 percent reduction of our carbon emissions over a
2009 baseline. Now we are working toward a 60 percent
reduction by 2020,” Laura informed us.
ENERGY STAR® certified products and the use of
smart home solutions also help keep energy use down.
Magnolia provides a host of home automation products
that allow lighting control, thermostat control and so much
more, reducing energy use, and in turn saving money. As
Laura pointed out, “Through purchasing ENERGY STAR
certified products last year alone, customers have saved
$45 million on their utility bills and avoided 543 million
pounds of CO2 emissions.”
Reduce — check, now reuse and recycle. The Best
Buy Trade-In Program gives customers a convenient way
to get value for products that are still in good, working
condition. These products are typically re-sold, bringing a
second useful life. As for recycling, this past year Best Buy
recycled 175 million pounds of e-waste and appliances.
That’s everything from batteries to laptops and TVs. Not a
bad way to help out the environment.
We care because you care
At Magnolia we know that none of this goodwill to our
communities and environment happens without the
tremendous help of all the people in our stores and in our
communities. As Laura told us, “Together, we are all working
to positively impact our world and enrich people’s lives
through technology.” GIV

When you build a home on the beach of Florida’s gulf coast,
amazing scenic views are a given. But for these homeowners,
creating the right scenes inside their home was equally
important. To achieve this, Magnolia created control and
entertainment solutions that made the environments inside the
home as magical as the ones nature created outside.
Come home and your house says “Hi”
Imagine walking off the beach after watching a stunning sunset, and
instead of stepping into a dark, lifeless home, the home lights up
as you enter. A welcome scene comes to life where everything from
window shades, thermostat, lighting, music and even your home
entertainment system comes to life. You’ve just walked away from
one stunning view into another. This is the environment Magnolia
achieved for this beachfront Florida home. It’s a smart home that is
designed to fit the family’s every need.
Having dipped their toes into home automation in a previous
house, this family was ready to dive headfirst into smart-home living
with their new residence. To bring this to life, Magnolia installed a
Savant automation system that controls every aspect of their home
using one simple app. This system controls a full Lutron lighting
system including automated window blinds, the family’s home
theater, security cameras both inside and out, as well as all of the
Sonance in-ceiling speakers throughout the house.
With this system in place, Magnolia was now able to create
unique lighting scenes for specific times of the day and various
locations around the house. As System Designer Christopher Rosario
told us, “We created welcome, goodnight, entertainment, and other
scenes to give the client a very appealing atmosphere where not only
did the artificial light change, but the shades opened or closed in
tandem with them to control the natural light.”
For the homeowners, this made a tremendous difference.
“With three stories and 50-some window openings, it’s really nice to
be able to push one button on the way in or out and know everything
is going to be right where we want it. To go through every room in this
5,000 square foot house, it’s a lot of steps to make sure everything is
off. With the scenes, daytime, nighttime, it just makes the live-ability
of this house a lot less of a chore.”
A S C E N E STEALER
With the Savant system, the homeowners can control lighting fixtures and window blinds together to create the perfect lighting atmosphere.

The homeowner went on to say, “Because we
have an open floor plan, lighting is key to setting the
mood. We wanted a lot of light, but not at full capacity.
Every time we turn on a light, we didn’t want to have to
adjust it. Every light has a dimmer allowing us to have it
right where we want it, day or night. We love to entertain,
so it’s truly invaluable to be able to push one button that
says ‘dinner party,’ and have it adjust our lighting, our
shades and our A/V system to a predetermined setting.”
Incredible Dolby Atmos® sound
When you have a home the size of this one, you may think a
media room would be standard, and it is, except this media
room is more often referred to as the family room. True,
there is no “dedicated” media room, but that didn’t stop
Magnolia from outfitting their family room space with one
incredible system—with a little trick to bring rear audio to
the space.
Starting with an 85" Sony TV surrounded by
MartinLogan Motion Slims on either side and one at the
center, plus 4 in-ceiling speakers that provide the above-
you Dolby Atmos sound, this system is ready to rock any
movie, football game or TV show. But where this system
Dolby Atmos® doesn’t have to exist in a dedicated media
room to deliver an amazing movie-going experience.
This family room houses a 5.1.4 Atmos system with the two rear speakers built into
the kitchen island.
really takes a turn for the unique is with the rear speakers. With
an open layout, where the family room leads directly into the
kitchen, Magnolia installed MartinLogan in-wall speakers into
the kitchen island to complete the system. How cool is that? Now
this unassuming family room has incredible Atmos surround
sound that hits you from every angle. And how does it sound? As
Christopher told us, “It’s one of the best Dolby Atmos rooms I’ve
ever done.”
The homeowner agreed, adding, “While the house doesn’t
have a true media room, we’re not missing much since we have our
open family room with this amazing sound system. During a party
we had for the Big Game, our guests were blown away by the quality
of sound that was coming from all around them. It was amazing.”

Magnolia installed a Holovision door station at the front entrance. Connected to the Savant home automation system, the homeowners can see and communicate with anyone who comes to their door, whether they’re home or away.
Going beyond the four walls
5,000 square feet, 3 stories, concrete floors, lots of
insulation. These are the specs that show up in the
nightmares of those trying to deliver a strong Wi-Fi
signal in a home. Thankfully, Magnolia, with the help of
commercial-grade Luxul and Ruckus products, made
bringing a strong signal to every corner of this house a
breeze. They even extended the Wi-Fi well beyond the
four walls to the multiple decks that are outfitted with
Sonance Extreme speakers. On the lanai, Magnolia
installed a SunBriteTV with a full motion mount to
bring the view out to the space. Bowers & Wilkins AM1
outdoor speakers deliver the audio here, with sound that
reaches all the way down to the beach. The homeowner
explained, “Because of the Wi-Fi enhancement points,
we can go down to the beach and still control the music
from our decks. It’s really great!”
Being on the Gulf Coast this home was built
hurricane tough with concrete floors and insulation.
While this is great to protect against nasty weather, it
can do a number on cell phone reception. To combat this
Magnolia installed a Wilson cell phone repeater system
– with antennas on the rooftop – strictly for their mobile
devices. “The house is so well built and insulated, it was
a must that we prewire for these cell phone repeaters.
Now the home has a strong cell phone signal as well,”
Magnolia Project Manager Derek Edgecomb said. These
cell phone repeaters are also ideal for homes in rural
areas, ensuring they have a strong cell signal as well.
From the ground up
“The best part of the project was being involved from
the very beginning, and to be able to make suggestions
along the way,” Magnolia General Manager, Joe
Vasquez told us. “With as many window blinds as there
are in this home, it would be nearly impossible to offer
wired automation after the home was built. Being able
to be here from the beginning really helped bring it
all together.”
Christopher added, “We have a saying we live by
at our store, ‘making dreams a reality,’ which is something
we were able to achieve in this home.” It’s these dreams
that Magnolia is ready to make come true in your home as
well. When you’re ready, stop into your nearest Magnolia
Design Center and let us show you just how amazing
your home entertainment solutions can be.
A strong network is key in a large home like this
one. So Magnolia installed commercial grade Luxul and Ruckus products, as well as a
Wilson cell phone repeater system. Now everything from
their Wi-Fi network to their cell phones work seamlessly
throughout the house.
A Magnolia signature trait: an impeccably wired rack.

It was only two short years ago that Bowers & Wilkins re-imagined their flagship
800 Series Diamond. 868 changes were made to a speaker line that was already
extraordinary, and the world was introduced to what’s next from this iconic brand.
With this new toolbox of materials and technologies, Bowers & Wilkins set out to
use these ideas elsewhere, and thankfully for you and I, they incorporated them
into the CM Series. This turned out to be such a comprehensive makeover that the
name CM would no longer do. Introducing the all-new 700 Series. Ideal for use in
any form factor from two-channel symphonies to home theater surround sound,
and now ready to be the cornerstone of audio brilliance in your home.
NEW TECHNOLOGY, CLASSIC DESIGN T H E A L L - N E W B O W E R S & W I L K I N S 7 0 0 S E R I E S
More 800, less CM
As Bowers & Wilkins unleashes the 700 Series on the
world, many will look at it as the replacement of the CM
series—which, in a way, it is. But it is more an evolution
toward the 800 Series. Andy Kerr, Director of Product
Marketing and Communications at Bowers & Wilkins
Steyning Research Facility in the U.K. told us, “If you
look deeply inside the technology in the CM, most of
what was there was related to the technology we used
in the 600 Series: that included the Kevlar cone, double
dome tweeter, and many other features. There was a bit
of a familiarity there. This time around, we really wanted
to push the boundaries of performance and capability,
and a big part of that was pouring in the technologies
of the 800 series, while keeping it in a more affordable,
conventional-looking loudspeaker.” Thus, the 700 Series
was born, not only showing the extensive change from
the CM Series, but also giving consumers a more clear
delineation of the Bowers & Wilkins floorstanding
speaker lines. Now consumers have a good, better, best
scenario, with the 600, 700 and 800 Series Diamond—
and you’ll see this in everything from the design, to the
materials, to the engineering.

A Deeper Dive: Carbon Dome Tweeter
For the 700 Series, Bowers & Wilkins introduced an all-new
tweeter technology: the Carbon Dome. Andy noted, “The
Carbon Dome, from an engineering and performance
standpoint, is a combination of some of the thinking in the
Aluminum double dome from the 600 Series and some of
the thinking in the diamond dome from the 800 Series. In
the end, it significantly improves on stiffness: having this
stiffness, this pistonic behavior, means it behaves more
accurately for longer. This produces more resolution and
a cleaner sound.”
The 705 S2 and 702 S2 Tweeter-On-Top designs also
feature Solid Body Tweeter technology. This design comes
entirely from the approach used in the 800 Series Diamond
and has the same performance benefits. But instead of using
a hollow zinc housing, the 705 S2 and 702 S2 use a shape
milled from a solid mass of aluminum to provide a stiffer
and less resonant structure. This design means it can benefit
from the same decoupling mechanism and acoustically
transparent grille design as the 800 Series Diamond.
Continuum cone midrange drivers
Each model in the new 700 Series features the
Continuum cone midrange drivers. First seen
in the 800 Series Diamond, these replace
the Kevlar cone found in the CM Series. Like
Kevlar, Continuum is a woven composite
that gives highly controlled break-up, for a
sweeter, more detailed midrange.
“All three floorstanding models in the
new 700 Series use decoupling technology,
which is kind of like a suspension system
for speaker drive units. We try to isolate the
midrange drive unit from the effects of it being
mounted in a box,” Andy told us. “The effect is
a cleaner sound, free from reverberation.”
Andy went on to say, “From a midrange
point of view, you have a cleaner cone material
in the Continuum cone, housed in a cleaner
chassis which is the aluminum chassis, and
we’re decoupling that from the cabinet. Those
three things together mean that, throughout
the midrange, the level of transparency and
resolution is massively improved. And all that
is derived from technology that we learned
from the 800 Series Diamond.”
The Aerofoil Cone
A new implementation of the Aerofoil cone used in the 800
Series Diamond has been developed for the 700 Series
as well. The main difference, as Andy told us is, “Instead
of carbon fiber we use paper, but we still use the Aerofoil
profile; its unique shape, the curvature, stiffens up the
structure. This improves accuracy in control and slam. It’s
not about getting necessarily more bass, it’s about getting
better, cleaner sound. In the end, you get a more realistic-
sounding bass.”
Conventional, yet dynamic
With the new hierarchy of speakers in the Bowers & Wilkins
line, the 600, 700 and 800 Series Diamond, you can clearly
see the step-up in everything from the design, to the
materials, to the engineering. While the 700 Series falls in
the middle, it might be looked at as the best of all worlds.
Andy noted, “The 700 Series is not only for the hardcore
audiophile consumer, it’s also for the family person who
wants a system for all occasions. It plays music well, it plays
movies well, it will even handle gaming, it will do all the
things you want to do in your life. And unlike some of
our speakers that have a more exotic form
factor such as the Zeppelin or the Nautilus,
the 700 Series has a more conventional
look. It’s the kind of product that will fit
easily into any home while carrying a lot of
the performance signatures and virtues of
our more exotic loudspeakers.”
Hear today, here tomorrow
“With the 700 Series, we really pushed
the performance way higher than we’ve
ever achieved at this price point before,”
Andy said with a smile. “This is a real game
changer for us for this category, just like
the 800 series was a game changer for us
in 2015.”
When you’re ready to experience
the 700 Series for yourself, stop into your

you can not only experience the 700

Home theaters: when done correctly, they
become so much more than just rooms that offer
big sights; they deliver huge sounds, dedicated
seating, specialty lighting and whatever else
your imagination can dream up. Unfortunately,
far too often, these “home theaters” are missing
the design, the gear and the panache that turn a
room with a projector into a true home theater.
For one California family, their newly purchased
home had a theater room, but it was far from
the experience they desired. Enter Magnolia,
and a very forgettable space soon turned into a
theater that any movie-goer would envy.
It started with a sputter
Walking into this beautiful ocean-front home, you definitely get a sense of
design and style, but there was one room that seemed to be cut off from the
rest. “The home theater room was pretty bland,” Magnolia Project Manager,
Steve Benoit told us. “It was a theater room, if you could call it that, but
there was no screen, just a wall painted white to look like a screen. The
homeowner just happened to have some chairs from his previous home.
The projector was old. There wasn’t any thought put into it. It was just a
room they called a theater.”
System Designer, Andrew Rivera added, “Even the lighting was just
a ceiling fan with a single light; that’s not a movie theater. So we completely
gutted the room.” Now it was time to bring in a style and design to match the
rest of the house, with sophisticated entertainment and control solutions
that would take this room to the next level.
f i n d u s o n l i n e @ m a g n o l i a a v . c o m & b e s t b u y . c o m / m a g n o l i a 17| B r i n g i n g i n s p i r a t i o n t o y o u r s p a c e f o r o v e r 6 0 y e a r s ™16
Bringing the boom
There’s no single element that brings the movie-going
experience to life like exceptional audio. But even the
finest premium speakers weren’t going to cut it for this
space. You see, the room was flat, the walls and ceiling
echoed, so even the best speakers would deliver sound
that just bounced around the room. To combat this,
Magnolia reached out to Acoustic Geometry to outfit the
room with acoustic treatments to dampen reflection and
bring the audio right where it needed to be.
From there it was time to pick out the right set
of speakers. This, surprisingly, started with the screen.
“The homeowner didn’t want to see the speakers and
we didn’t have the width to put the speakers outside the
screen,” Steve said. “We chose a Stewart 125" MicroPerf
screen. This allowed us to not only hide the speakers
behind the screen, but also allowed for a bigger screen
in the room.”
For the speakers themselves, Magnolia chose
the Sonance Cinema LCR1 in-wall speakers. Significant
speakers in their own right, when combined with this
perfectly acoustically treated room, their performance
reached another level. As Andrew told us, “These
speakers can outdo most speakers just because of how
that room was designed.”
Then Magnolia added two Sumiko S9 subs for
room-filling bass. “There was no place to hide the subs,”
Steve told us, “We chose Sumiko because they not
only sound amazing, but because of their clean gloss
black finish; they look amazing as well. It’s an incredible
7.2 system.”
To finish off the A/V components of the room,
Magnolia installed a Sony 4K projector, an Integra
receiver to power the gear, and added a Panasonic
4K Blu-ray player to play the family’s favorite movies.
Extending the wow
With the A/V equipment in place, it was time to bring
in the “theater” look. That started with lighting. For this,
Magnolia installed stunning Lutron sconces. With their
incredible premium look and style, along with their
Lutron dimming capabilities, these sconces added the
flair that every great home theater requires. To add to the
look and style of these sconces, Magnolia incorporated
the latest Lutron light switches, called Grafik Ts. These
dimmer switches have a new, more modern design
with impressive heavy-duty metal faceplates. As Steve
explained, “We wanted to have a nice modern look
throughout the theater. With these matching faceplates,
everything looks cohesive and ties in with the grays and
blacks in the room.”
To replace the old, tired ceiling fan in the room,
Magnolia went big: in fact they went big ass, with a Big
Ass Fan. Not only is this the name of the brand, but it
describes the fan to a tee. But even for its size, it is
incredibly elegant, with a black mat finish that nearly
disappears into the ceiling. And because it’s Wi-Fi
enabled, it works in tandem with the rest of the control
in the space.
Speaking of control, the room is automated using
a Control4 system. Now the homeowner can manage the
entire space with their smartphone or tablet, including
the lights, all the gear and even the ceiling fan. With the
push of a single button, this room comes to life; so when
it’s movie time, there’s never a wait.
It starts and ends with trust
Magnolia built a strong relationship with the homeowner,
building trust and confidence throughout the project.
This allowed Magnolia to really show off their capabilities.
As Andrew told us, “It was really a whole group effort to
get this room where it is. The homeowner really trusted
us with a lot of this stuff, and he was up for almost
everything we suggested.”
The outcome is one you have to experience to
truly appreciate. “When you’re inside that room, it’s
truly awesome,” Andrew explained. “The way it sounds
acoustically, the way the treatments deaden the sound so
you don’t get any kind of reflection. Then you add in the
design elements and it all sounds and looks great.”
Ready to turn your home theater room into a true
“theater”? Look no further than Magnolia, with our System
Designers, Project Managers, Engineers and professional
Installers. We have the gear, style and “wow” to turn any
room into the ultimate home theater.
Lutron Grafik T dimmer switches were chosen not only for their light control capabilities, but also for their design, matching the look of the light sconces.
Sonance Cinema LCR1 in-wall speakers surround the room, including playing the role of right, left and center channels behind the 125" Stewart MicroPerf screen.
Acoustic treatments from Acoustic Geometry line the walls and the
ceiling to dampen reflection and bring the audio right to where it
needs to be. Theater seats and Lutron sconces bring home the look and feel of a premium theater. While
the Sony 4K projector, Sonance Cinema LCR1 speakers and dual Sumiko S9 subs deliver the wow.

The worlds of Google Home and Amazon Alexa have become a cornerstone
in many of our homes. Simply ask these devices a question or give them a
command—and in split seconds you’ve got your answer. It truly is amazing, and
incredibly cutting edge: two things that have always described Sony. So it’s no
wonder they’re at the forefront of bringing this technology to their latest 4K Ultra
HD TVs with Android TV, speakers, soundbars and receivers. It’s the expansion of
voice control, and Sony is ready.
Start talking to your TV
Over 35 years ago, my family had a voice controlled TV in our living
room—it was my dad telling me to go turn the channel. Today Sony has
made this concept a lot more user friendly. With Amazon Alexa, you can
control the latest Sony 4K HDR televisions with Android TV using such
commands as on and off, volume control, play/pause/stop/fast forward,
plus you can switch inputs and change channels, just by asking. Google
Home allows you to use voice control on Sony TVs with Chromecast or
Chromecast built-in. Now you can ask your TV to watch a TV series, TV
show or movie, go to the next episode, or pause, resume or stop.
Now, instead of searching for a movie or TV show using your
cable or satellites search feature—slowly typing in the name using the
up and down control of the remote, you just tell your Sony TV what you
want to watch and start watching it. Want to watch a movie? Just say,
“OK Google, Play Spiderman Homecoming from YouTube on my living
room TV.” Boom, you’re watching the web slinger within seconds. Or
say, “Alexa, set the volume to 30 on my bedroom TV.” Magically, the
volume changes. No more searching for the remote: it’s completely
hands-free. Just tell Google Home or Alexa what you want—and
voilà—your command is granted. And with Sony’s Voice Search, you
can bring home all your favorite content across a host of providers
including Netflix, Hulu, Google Play™ Movies & TV, YouTube™ and
Spotify®. So now, no matter what you want to watch, no matter where it
is housed, you have easy access to it with just a simple voice command.
Searching, finding and enjoying is now easier than ever.

Listen up Google Home
Google Home takes Sony product voice control even further with control
of select speakers, receivers and soundbars. Now, new and existing Sony
audio products, with Chromecast built in, can be controlled with your voice.
Chromecast is the device that traditionally allowed your smartphone, tablet or
computer to be the remote control to access audio and video content. Today,
Sony audio products with Chromecast built in, allows Google Home to be the
voice control of these products and this audio content.
The cool part is, it’s not just one speaker in one room, or a few speakers:
you can voice control a whole house full of Sony audio products. Using
Google’s multi-room group feature, you can group any combination of Google
Home, Chromecast Audio or Chromecast built-in Sony speakers, receivers
and soundbars together. By creating groups in the Google Home app, you
can simply say, “OK Google, play evening mix on all speakers,” and you have
immersive audio throughout your entire home. From choosing a song to
changing the volume—your voice is your controller. And with Google Home you
can voice control such apps as Google Play™ Music, Pandora, YouTube™ Music,
Spotify® and TuneIn, for an unbelievably holistic audio experience.
The future of TV and music today
Sony, ever on the cutting edge of the latest technology, is once again bringing
you into the future with the latest voice command technologies. Watch and
listen to what you want, just by asking. Stop into your nearest Magnolia Design
Center and ask a System Designer how you can bring the latest Sony products
into the voice control world of Google Home and Amazon Alexa.
Control is just a voice command away,
leaving your hands free to do the things you really
enjoy. “OK Google, play dance mix.”
The HT-ST5000 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos soundbar is just one of the many Sony audio products that works with Google Home. You can also control select Sony speakers and receivers—any Sony audio product that has Chromcast built in.

Picture this: you find your favorite album from the stack that’s sitting by your turntable. You slide it out of the sleeve,
set it on the platter, and gently place the needle on the record. As the platter begins to spin, you recline in the
most comfortable chair in the room, gaze at the album’s cover art, and get lost in pure sound. Pro-Ject has made
it their mission to bring this experience to as many homes as possible. With founder Heinz Lichtenegger’s passion
for turntables, tonearms and analog accessories leading the charge, Pro-Ject has grown into a brand that delivers
outstanding audiophile sound through an assortment of turntables that span a wide range of budgets and desires.
To get an insider’s look at what makes Pro-Ject turntables some of the best in the industry, we sat down with
Buzz Goddard, Brand Director for Pro-Ject, and got his keen view of the brand, and turntables in general.
M: What makes Pro-Ject’s turntables unique?
Buzz: To achieve Heinz’s vision to make high-end turntables
for every household, he set out to make the very best
product he could without adding a number of extra features.
The extra bells and whistles are not needed in the home—a
turntable is supposed to run at either 33 or 45 RPM and
that’s it, no need to slow it down or speed it up. So Pro-Ject
turntables tend to look a bit simpler, yet they’re very elegant.
If you look at any of our turntables, they’re beautifully made,
and they’re remarkably reliable. It’s a real world philosophy
of making something that sounds great, treats the vinyl
correctly, and that you’ll have pride of ownership in.
To accomplish this, we place a lot of our attention
in the details of the things you don’t see. Even our least
expensive turntables have sapphire bearings in the tonearm,
which makes them not only sound better, but also ensures
these turntables will last longer. Most equivalently priced
turntables don’t have that.
Every turntable available inside Magnolia Design
Center stores also has carbon fiber tonearms. Pro-Ject is
the only turntable company which uses carbon fiber in
turntables that are under several thousands of dollars—
because carbon fiber is a difficult material to work with and
it’s very expensive to create the tooling to build them with.
We also have a real polished stainless steel spindle
in a brass chuck with a Teflon thrust pad (say that twice). You
can’t see it unless you dissect the turntable, but it makes a
difference both in the performance and in the fact that it will
last years down the road.
Finally, because Heinz wanted something for
everybody, our turntables start at $299 and go up to
$14,000 for the signature model. But at any level we simply
make the best turntable on the market.

M: The cartridge: it’s one of the key components of any
turntable, can you talk about its importance?
Buzz: Turntables are all about the needle. It traces
the groove on a record with microscopic precision.
Unfortunately, the cartridge is where many manufacturers
cut corners. When you get up to the $1,500+ models, you
get a choice of cartridges; below that, most turntables
come with a cartridge. With Pro-Ject, at this lower price-
point, all but one of our turntables available at Magnolia
come with an Ortofon cartridge, and Ortofon is the world
leader in cartridges. The matching between the cartridge
and the tonearm is critical. Just like you wouldn’t put a
giant 8-cylindar engine in an economy car, you need to
balance things out with a turntable as well. With all of our
turntables, we offer a really premium cartridge. Even on
the Debut Carbon you’re getting a $100 cartridge in the
Ortofon 2M Red, which works beautifully with the carbon
fiber tonearm.
M: Phono-preamps are a must for most turntables. Can
you talk about their role?
Buzz: What’s unique about a turntable compared to any
other source is that the signal level is at a fraction of what
other sources are. The signal coming off the turntable is
so small it has to be significantly amplified. The reason
for this is that when they produce the record, they put
in less bass—because the bass could pop the needle off
the record. So they cut the bass in the recording by as
much as 20dB and conversely they boost the treble by
as much as 20dB. So when you play back the record, you
have to apply a reverse equalization to that, otherwise
you’ll barely hear any output, and what you do hear
will be tinny and bright because there’s no bass. So the
phono-preamp has two jobs. It has to have a very precise
equalization curve in it and it has to have a tremendous
amount of gain, of amplification, and it has to do both
of those things very quietly because you’re dealing with
such a small signal. Without this you’re going to get noise
and distortion trying to boost the signal. The choice of
the phono section is absolutely critical and one where
most people tend to cut corners.
Any serious audiophile will have a separate phono
preamp. Pro-Ject realizes this and offers a phono preamp
for whatever your budget level.
M: Pro-Ject has come out with some pretty amazing
commemorative turntables, and a few exclusive
turntables for Magnolia. Can you talk about those?
Buzz: All the Beatles music was originally made to listen
to on vinyl. Apple Corp, which owns the Beatles catalog
and licensing thought it would be cool to do a Beatles
turntable. As the world leader in audiophile turntables,
Pro-Ject was approached to do a series of turntables to
commemorate some anniversaries they had coming up.
The first product we came out with was a Magnolia
exclusive, The Beatles 1964 turntable—that was, and still is
until they’re gone, only available in the U.S. at Magnolia.
That was put out to commemorate the historic 1964
U.S. tour by the Beatles, and it has ticket stubs from the
legendary tour that dot the plinth.
Based on the success of that, they decided to do a
series of these kinds of turntables. The next was a George
Harrison turntable. Then came the 50th Anniversary
Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band turntable. This
turntable uses the album cover’s image of the drum
under the acrylic platter. The best part is, these aren’t just
gimmicky turntables: they are based on very high-quality
Pro-Ject turntables.
Most recently, we’re making a 2Xperience SB
turntable that’s exclusively available in the United States
at Magnolia. It uses a special Ortofon 2M Silver cartridge—
the silver is a custom cartridge that uses silver wire for the
coils in the cartridge—and it’s a superb conductor. It’s very
unique.
M: Vinyl, more than any other audio format has stood
the test of time. Do you have any suggestions on how to
keep your audio collection pristine, and your turntable
up to date?
Buzz: As long as you take care of it, vinyl can last much
longer than a lifetime. I have a collection that I will
be handing down to my kids. But to keep it in good
condition you need to clean the vinyl every time you play
it, you need to clean your stylus, and you need to be sure
you’re using a proper turntable. If you cheap out on it,
you’ll have something that doesn’t track well, and then
you’re dragging a diamond through vinyl, and once it’s
damaged, that’s it, there’s no way to undo it.
One of the cool things about Pro-Ject turntables is
that they’re all designed with an upgrade path to them.
This means we offer replacement mats and platters. And
because we use carbon tonearms on our turntables, you
can upgrade the cartridges on them as well. You could
put a $500 cartridge on a $500 Debut Carbon turntable
and it would actually sound like a $1000 package. So
these turntables can grow with you, they’re not a dead-
end investment.

Creating a theme for your home theater is
nothing new, whether it’s a sports theme, a nod
to a genre, or even modeling it after a specific
movie or character. For the owner of this home
theater, that theme is clearly horror. Full-size
statues and busts of iconic characters from some
of his favorite movies line the walls. There’s
almost as much to see throughout the room as
there is to see on the screen; it’s a scary movie
fan’s dream. But perhaps the scariest part is how
amazing this theater is. Thanks to Magnolia, the
audio and video in this space is as close to any
commercial theater you’ll ever step inside, with a
style and flavor that is one of a kind.
The best…
Above a four-stall garage in a suburban Chicago
home is a space that you’d never imagine. As you
move past the signed movie posters and movie
figurines at the entrance, you realize you are in a
very special place. Surrounded by special edition
and extremely rare movie paraphernalia, you enter
a world that even some movies don’t take you
to. Then, with the push of a button on a Control4
remote, the lights dim, the projector comes to
life and you’re completely blown away by a home
theater experience that is truly phenomenal. But it
took a lot to get it to this place.
As Magnolia Senior System Designer Coby
Owen told us, “We built what I believe to be the
absolute best system the room could accommodate
– short of tearing down the house and rebuilding it
from scratch. Because the room is above the garage,
the pitch of the roof comes into play. Without a flat
ceiling, we had to place the Atmos and rear speakers
in some very strategic locations to ensure the sound
was the best it could be. We also had depth and
height limitations for the equipment racks because
of the wall and ceiling joists. To accommodate these
space constraints, we created two smaller racks on
either side of the room.”

To power 11 speakers with these space limitations, Magnolia put all
of the source components in one rack, and the McIntosh processor and
MC207 amps in the other rack. These amps deliver 200 watts of power per
channel, with seven channels in each amp. With 14 channels worth of power
for 11 speakers, Magnolia used the 3 extra channels to bi-amp the front three
speakers, giving them 400 watts of McIntosh power—plenty to be sure. Then,
using McIntosh’s flagship MX160 processor, the sound was able to go through
McIntosh’s proprietary room correction software called Room Perfect. This
allows for incredibly accurate sound shaped perfectly for this room. “Most
experts agree that Room Perfect is as good as it gets,” Coby told us.
“All the gear is plugged into AudioQuest’s new Niagara 7000 power
center,” Coby added. “While AudioQuest is known for cables, they now make
power conditions that are really good. Then every component is connected
into a Panamax BlueBolt power center. This allows us to check all the equipment
and all the components remotely, and reboot them if any issues arise.”
Bowers & Wilkins were the speaker of choice for both Coby and the
homeowner. As Coby told us, “B&W makes a purpose-built speaker for an
in-wall theater setup, which is perfect for what we were looking for here.” The
front three speakers are Bowers & Wilkins CT8.2s, which are hidden behind
the acoustically transparent screen. To create the immersive surround and
Dolby Atmos audio, B&W’s CIW7.3s in-ceiling speakers were chosen. Then
Magnolia added four B&W 15-inch subwoofers that sit below the screen
behind acoustically transparent paneling. “With 4 subwoofers in here, it’s
absolutely thunderous,” Coby said with a smile.
Lights and camera for the action
Home theater projectors have come a long way in the past few years. 4K, HDR
and now lasers. Yes, lasers are the ultimate step forward. Not only do lasers
help deliver a stunning image, but they also greatly reduce startup time; and
without a lamp that would need replacing, it’s virtually maintenance free. But
as Coby told us, what really sold the homeowner on this projector was, “This is
the consumer version of the Sony commercial 4K projector. When you go to a
movie theater, they use a projector that is very similar to this, and that gave the
homeowner the exact theater experience he wanted.”
The screen is a 145" Stewart Film Screen with motorized vertical masking
so the homeowner can change the aspect ratio between 2.40:1 and 16:9.
Vertical masking allowed Magnolia to do a bigger screen by having the motors
on top instead of the sides. “We did the biggest possible screen that would
fit within the pitch of the roof without being so low that the front row of seats
would block the rear seats’ view,” Coby noted.
Now it’s time for the show – and for this homeowner, that meant housing
his massive movie collection. “I’m Mr. Movie Buff,” he said with a smile. “I’m
like a walking IMDb database on two legs—I’m a real film nut. I want to watch
anything that strikes me as interesting.” So Magnolia outfitted the room with a
Kaleidescape system to store all his favorite movies, or to download the latest
flicks in 4K.
Far Left: These dedicated Control4 tablets control the whole room, allowing the homeowner to manage the lighting, sound and video from a single location.
Left: A third rack with Kaleidescape for all of the homeowner’s movies, as well as Magnolia’s exclusive DAVE panel (glowing blue) which provides a single conduit, to seamlessly integrate the rack to all points throughout the home.
“When you’re in there, the
sound, that 4K projector—it blows your hair back.”
To finish off the room, Magnolia added lighting
control, so when you push play, everything dims. It is also
set up to allow for any number of pre-set scenes to highlight
different memorabilia throughout the room.
And what does the homeowner think of all this?
“Magnolia built my dream movie theater. I never have to go
to a real theater again. In terms of sound, I wanted the best
speakers where it’s totally surround sound with the speakers
behind the screen like a real theater. I also wanted it to be
super modern—both the room and the gear. I wanted it on
a sensory level to be the best it could be, and Magnolia
delivered that. When you’re in there, the sound, that 4K
projector—it blows your hair back.”

Above: Security cameras are located throughout the
residence, including doorbell cameras at the front and back
door. Every camera can be brought up on the dedicated Control4 tablets, so keeping an eye on things is easy and
convenient.
Coby added, “The homeowner was all about
getting the best equipment in the room he could,
and his wife worked really closely with the designer to
get the right materials for the walls and seating. This
collaboration made for a truly remarkable space in terms
of both technology and design.
More than a theater…
The homeowner originally went to his Best Buy
store to get some help with his control system.
A previous integrator had left him with limited
control, and he needed support and upgrades.
Best Buy, seeing his vision, passed the job to the
local Magnolia Design Center, where Coby and
team took over. After an initial consultation, “We updated
the home’s networking,” Coby explained. “We put in
commercial-grade Ruckus access points throughout
the home. We redid the existing equipment rack: the
previous dealer literally had stuff sitting on the floor, wires
were a mess—so we cleaned that all up to get him up and
running. We also added in-wall touch panels throughout
the home. With these dedicated Control4 touch panels
you can do video and audio intercom throughout the
house, including a connection to the front and back
doorbell stations—so if someone rings the bell, you can
see who’s there and talk with them.”
Stepping outside, Magnolia did a very extensive
outdoor system. “He has a large pool and outdoor
kitchen area,” Coby noted. “He had some low-quality
rock speakers, so we got the plans from his landscaper
and we sent them to Sonance and they designed a
custom landscape speaker system for him, comprised of
16 landscape speakers hidden in the flowers and bushes
throughout his yard, with 4 in-ground subwoofers.”
This was just what the homeowner was looking for.
“My wife and I like to entertain friends and we wanted
to have a really great outdoor sound system to do that.
Magnolia came through on that. They gave us a speaker
layout where we can listen to music anywhere in the
yard. They broke it down to pool, fire pit and patio: it’s
awesome. We have access through a Control4 app, and
between the app and the wall panels, you can play music
from any audio site. The versatility to get whatever you
want musically, on demand, is amazing.”
He went on to say, “The speakers are really
remarkable. I don’t know what they’re made out of,
but they put up with this Chicago weather—so you get
super hot humid weather in the summer, and in the
winter, you get arctic chills, and they take it and always
sound awesome. Plus, they don’t bother the neighbors.
That was one of our concerns; but with these speakers,
we can crank music, and you can’t hear it until you get
down into the backyard.”
Your trusted advisor
Over time, Coby and the homeowner built a close
relationship. Coby explained, “The cool part now is I’ve
become more than just his sales guy, I’ve become his

The homeowner agreed, adding, “It was

service is really awesome. With Magnolia Care, I can
get a hold of these guys at any time, they can even

A masterpiece of sound & design
The Masterpiece Series is a culmination of ideas
MartinLogan has been working on for years. The last
redesign of their iconic electrostatic line was almost
a decade ago, and their engineers have continued to
work to make improvements in nearly every phase of the
speaker. As MartinLogan’s Marketing Manager, Devin Zell
shared with us, “Bringing bass technology up to the level
of the electrostatic panel has been our challenge since
the beginning. The electrostatic panel is considered one
of the most precise transducers on the planet. So for the
Masterpiece Series, it wasn’t about changing the already
magnificent sound of the electrostatic panel itself, it was
about bringing the rest of the speaker’s technology up to
match its performance. With the Masterpiece Series, we
were able to integrate bass, not only with the panel itself,
but also to better integrate it into the listener’s room.” To
accomplish this task, two innovations were introduced
into the Masterpiece Series: PoweredForce Forward™
bass technology and Anthem Room Correction (ARC).
PoweredForce Forward™ bass technology allows
small enclosures to accurately produce massive amounts
of bass, while significantly reducing performance-
robbing front-wall bass reflections. This minimizes the
effects of bass information that might bounce back into
the listening area, resulting in realistic bass effects you
can feel. Now you have more placement flexibility and
enhanced accuracy and realism.
Integrated Anthem Room Correction or ARC,
which is integrated into the top three speaker models
in the Masterpiece Series, the Renaissance ESL 15A, the
Expression ESL 13A and the Impression ESL 11A, as well
as the top center channel in the series, the Illusion ESL
C34A, allows you to achieve perfect bass performance
in any space. Simply engage ARC, and the calibrated
microphone measures the bass output within your
unique listening environment and compares it to optimal
response curves. ARC Technology then instantly adjusts
your speaker’s output to accommodate for the landscape
of your room, virtually eliminating performance-robbing
anomalies such as doors, windows, furniture and other
hard surfaces, for the ultimate in sound performance.
A host of other improvements were made to the
Masterpiece Series, too many to discuss fully here, but
one listen and you’ll hear how they all take the iconic
shape and look of MartinLogan’s electrostatic speaker,
and move them into the future. Devin told us, “We’ve
learned a lot about crossovers and driver integration
and really making things seamless in the final sonic
presentation.” Together, these improvements help
the Masterpiece Series live up to its name, in both its
stunning design and its immersive sound—which will
leave you breathless, and begging to hear more.
THE NEXT EVOLUTION OF
MARTINLOGANSince 1983, MartinLogan has looked at the art of sound in their own unique way, starting with the use of the electrostatic
speaker, then later with their Folded Motion tweeter. Over the past few months, MartinLogan has introduced several
new products that take this same thinking to the next level, with audio products that deliver, what they call, the truth in
sound. At Magnolia, we’re excited to offer their latest electrostatic line, the Masterpiece Series, their new Motion i Series
and the Cadence soundbar. Together these speakers are ringing in a new evolution of products that deliver the audio

Motion i Compact Speakers
When the compact Motion Series originally hit the market,
it was a phenomenal performer. The bass response and
Folded Motion tweeter delivered a smooth, refined
sound with stunning dynamic range and jaw-dropping
clarity, so it wasn’t easy to improve on such an amazing
speaker. But improve it MartinLogan did. The new Motion
i Series (you could say the “i” stands for “improved”) took
all the things you loved about the original, and made
them even better. Devin explained, “We looked at the
crossover and optimized the manufacturing on it. We
also improved build quality, reducing the size on the 2i
and 6i, while reducing the price on these two models
as well. Listening to consumer feedback, we made the
front grills removable and improved the binding posts.
It was hard to do a lot to them, they were already so
exceptional at the price, so we took the time to optimize
the design and improve where we could.” The result is
stellar speaker perfect for any room or application in
your home, whether it’s as a bookshelf or in use in your
theater’s surround sound.
Cadence Soundbar
Working from their current Vision X soundbar,
MartinLogan set out to deliver this same level of
amazing sound, but with a thinner profile. “With today’s
increasingly thin TVs, a thinner soundbar was necessary,”
Devin explained. “We wanted to design a soundbar that
would mount much flatter to the wall, to give customers
more placement flexibility.”
The Cadence uses nine 4-inch full range drivers
and nine channels of amplification to reproduce multi-
channel recordings with incredible accuracy. The same
Anthem Room Correction technology found in the
Masterpiece Series is also found in the Cadence to
deliver an immersive home theater surround sound
experience in nearly any room.
The Cadence soundbar also integrates Play-Fi,
AirPlay and Bluetooth technologies. Devin told us, “It
has the Holy Grail of the best streaming technologies, so
you can stream the best quality content to the soundbar
wirelessly.” And with Play-Fi’s echo system, simply add
two other Play-Fi speakers for the rear surround sound,
and you have a 5.0 surround sound system.
Engineering for all
One of the amazing things about MartinLogan speakers is the
engineering. “The same engineers who work on the monolithic
Masterpiece Series are also designing the Motion i Series and
Cadence soundbar,” Devin explained. “The same gentleman
who is thinking about how to create the perfect crossover for
a super speaker, is thinking about how to build a crossover for
a $180 speaker, and he gives just as much thought to those
speakers as he does the super speaker.” In the end, you get a
truly iconic sound up and down the MartinLogan line.
Discover what makes MartinLogan the speaker brand
of choice for audiophiles and enthusiasts alike at your nearest
Magnolia Design Center. There, you can enjoy these speakers
firsthand, experiencing this evolution of audio brilliance.
“The new Motion i Series takes all the things you loved about the original, and made them even better.”
The Cadence soundbar can be mounted above or below your TV, or placed on a TV stand. Either way, it’s simple and elegant in style, loud and room-filling in sound.

A dark room and a white wall or white sheet. Once upon a time, that’s all people thought you needed when
you purchased a projector. Heck, even today, some may think you don’t need much more than that. Projector
screens are something we never put much thought into, until we buy a projector, and by that time you may
not realize what you need or even what’s possible. The truth is, there’s a ton of thought and innovation that
goes into the latest screens: so much so, that you may find what you once didn’t even know existed, is part of
a screen you can’t live without. Here’s a short description of the latest innovations that will have you looking
at projector screens in a whole new light.
Ambient light rejection
What’s the first thing you think about when it’s time to
fire up a movie? Lights off. But what if there are a few
people in the room who don’t want to watch the movie?
What if you’re having a party and want to watch the big
game on the giant screen with the lights on? Well, you
can either watch a washed-out image, or you can get
a special ambient light-rejecting screen. Using special
materials, brands like Screen Innovations and Stewart
Filmscreen eliminate the need for dark rooms. Plus,
the same materials that make it possible to get a crisp
image when the lights are on take watching in the dark to
another level as well. Screen Innovations Black Diamond
screens, for example, not only block out ambient light in
a bright room, they also cancel out reflected light in dark
rooms. Reflected light is the projector’s light bouncing
off the screen and back into the room, creating light
reflections on the ceiling and walls. Now, you get pure
color and contrast on the screen, no matter the amount
of light in your space.
Acoustic transparency
We all want the biggest screen possible, but with that
comes the issue of where to put the front left, right
and center channel speakers. Thankfully, acoustically
transparent screens are the answer. With thousands
of tiny “pin-holes” in the screen (which are invisible to
the naked eye when watching a movie), you are now
able to hide speakers behind the screen. It’s the same
technology your favorite local movie theater uses. Now
you can get the giant screen for your theater and add
even more wow to the room by hiding the speakers.
PROJECTION SCREENS: MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE The Transformer
Known for their innovations in projector screen
technology, Screen Innovations is changing the way
you watch movies with their latest screen, aptly named
The Transformer. Exclusive to Screen Innovations, the
Transformer screen does just that: it automatically
transforms the screen to the aspect ratio of the movie or
show you are watching. As you go from a movie that’s
16:9 to 2.35:1 to 2.40:1, the screen literally grows to the
perfect ratio to match your content. No more masking,
which is huge, because masking covers up part of
the image when adjusting between screen sizes. The
Transformer creates a perfect border around the actual
image itself, so you’re seeing everything you should be
seeing.
Above: The Screen Innovations Black Diamond Screen features ambient light rejection, for a clear picture whether the room is dark or full of light.
Left: A close-up of the tiny pin-holes in an acoustically transparent screen, which allows sound to pass through, so you can hide speakers behind the sreen.

Ultra short-throw screens
Ultra short-throw projectors are surging in popularity.
Their benefits are numerous, including not having to
mount a projector, no screen light shadows coming
from behind you, and easy placement—even as close
as 6 inches from a wall. As great as these projectors are
at giving you a pristine 4K image, the right screen can
ensure all that beauty is displayed to its fullest extent.
Why do you need a special screen for short-throw
projectors? Imagine shining a light at a 45-degree angle
at a wall: light reflects back at a converse 45-degree
angle. This reduces the color and clarity of the picture.
But with a short-throw projector screen, this reflection is
greatly reduced, as the screen holds the light and color
and displays it directly to the viewer for a crisp, clear look.
It’s called short-throw light rejection and it gives you an
amazing picture from a projector that you can place just
inches from the wall and the projector screen on that wall.
Back LED light
Style. It’s what every TV or projector craves. Not only do
you want an amazing image, but the look of the screen
on your wall should be as much of a wow factor as what
it displays. Most fixed screens can incorporate optional
LED lighting behind the screen, creating an incredible
glow that makes the screen almost look like it’s floating.
The choice is yours
Every theater has its own unique needs, and its own
budget. Thankfully Magnolia offers a host of screens to fit
both, with the brands and innovations to make watching
a movie, TV show or sporting event as brilliant and awe-
inspiring as it can be. Visit your nearest Magnolia Design
Center and ask to learn more about the perfect projector
screen for you, then bring the movie experience home in
a whole new light.Screen Innovations short-throw
screens are a must for short-throw projectors to deliver a
pristine, color rich image.

Why can’t work feel like home?
Artists of the Industry may be in a professional building, but the desire was to
create a space that was different than your average business setting. Duane
told us, “We wanted to create an environment that’s more like a living room,
that’s like home. We wanted a place that has a culture where people can come
and be creative.”
Magnolia System Designer, Nick Fritzinger, added, “Duane’s vision
helped let us know that this wasn’t just a conference room we were doing:
this was really an extension of what Artists of the Industry wants to be. It was
important for us to demonstrate the artistic nature of what they do here in
an interesting way that went beyond the feel of a boardroom. To do this, we
created a video wall with three Sony 65" TVs, all butted up perfectly, with no
creases beyond the bezels. Now they can display video that goes across all
three screens, or they can show individual content on each screen.”
For the larger 75" TV at the head of the table, Magnolia offered a unique
solution to fit with Artists of the Industry’s unique needs. Nick pointed out,
”The 75" is a showpiece, and like all the TVs in this space, it is connected to
the video distribution system, so you can wirelessly deliver content from your
phone or computer to the screen. But the really cool part is that the mount
allows this TV to rotate between portrait and landscape views. If Duane and
team have digital signage or advertisements that might need portrait mode
for a kiosk project, they can rotate the TV 90º to display the content just as it
will appear out in the market.”
Nothing was an afterthought here. Even the brand of TVs was well
thought out. Nick noted, “We went with Sony due to their color accuracy—
that’s a big need they have. Sony offered the best performance: when they’re
rendering on their Apple computers, they’re getting the same quality on
these Sony TVs.”
Artists of the Industry is a forward thinking company on the cutting edge of content creation, building not only
audio and video content, but material for virtual and augmented reality. Duane Tornquist: Co-Founder, Chief
Creative Officer and Executive Producer told us, “We’re developing tools to distribute content like it’s never been
done before, so we’re looking out ahead of the curve.” When you’re this forward leaning in your thought and
creativity, you need a space that aligns with these fundamentals. For Artists of the Industry and Mr. Tornquist,
Magnolia was the perfect partner to bring that vision to life.

and recording studio.

Service Technician, Ernesto Rojas; System Designer,
Nick Fritzinger; and Lead Custom Installer, Daniel Bay.
Beyond the screens
For audio, Magnolia chose what many audio professionals
choose: Bowers & Wilkins. As Nick pointed out, “For me,
if you’re going to put a speaker in a recording studio
space, especially through Magnolia, there’s no reason it
shouldn’t be Bowers & Wilkins. With the stories we tell
about Abby Road Studios and Skywalker Ranch both
using B&W, what a disservice we’d be doing by not using
B&W in a recording studio like this one, even if it isn’t in
the recording room itself.”
In the main conference area, Magnolia installed an
in-ceiling Bowers & Wilkins 5.1 surround sound system.
To manage all this technology, they also incorporated
Control4. This allowed Magnolia to do some custom
programming for the main conference room, having the
sound go through the surround system whether they’re
displaying content on the video wall or the main 75" TV.
“This gave them flexibility and ease of use,” Nick noted.
“With so many different artists coming through here,
having the Control4 app on the iPad makes it really easy
for anyone to control the entire space.”
All this technology exceeded Duane’s needs, “We
can record in surround sound, then bring a client
in here to this 5.1 studio and show them what
it’s going to look and feel like in their home.”
And when the workday is done, the
room serves another purpose. Duane told us,
“All of the TVs can show sporting events or live
TV. We can take the top off our boardroom table
and underneath is a pool table. Then we can crank
up the audio and really enjoy the space. It’s makes it a
great place to have events or just relax.”
A look into the studio
Inside the recording studio Magnolia installed a
75" Sony 4K TV that’s connected to a camera in the
performance room. Because of the location of the
mixing board, the recording engineer can now see the
musicians and singers who are in that room, and give them
direction. There’s also a camera in the recording studio
itself, and, because all the rooms are interchangeable
with a media server that connects them all, the footage
from each of these cameras can be displayed throughout
the office. As Nick explained, “This creates an immersive
space where, no matter where you are in the office, you’re
part of what’s going on.”
Above: The main conference room with its amazing video wall, and main TV turned to portrait mode.
Left: The recording studio with Phillips Hue lights glowing red. The Hue app (shown below) offers a nearly endless variety of colors.
Lights please
When you think of lighting for a commercial space, white
track lighting at full power is the norm. Artists of the
Industry is not the norm, so Magnolia gave Duane the
idea of using Phillips Hue lighting. This allowed Duane
and his team the option to turn nearly any light in their
office to any color they choose. “The lighting was kind of
an afterthought,” Duane admitted. “But when I learned
about Hue, I thought: that’s really cool. Now, we can light
this place with our own brand colors. Or, even better, if
we have a client come in, we can put their logo up on
the screen, then glow the room to match their color
palette.”
The recording studio also uses Hue lighting,
so now, whether they’re recording vocals or a full
band, they can tune the room to create the right
feel. “From an artistic point of view, if you feel good
about your space, and color can affect mood, you tend
to sound a little bit better too,” Nick noted. “This isn’t just
another recording studio or conference room, it’s really
the essence and the feel of what Artists of the Industry
is all about.”
Magnolia, for commercial projects? Yes!
“Initially I didn’t think of Magnolia for commercial,”
Duane noted. “I had several other companies take a
crack at this, and they simply wouldn’t give me what I
was asking for. So I went to Best Buy, and they referred
me to the Magnolia Design Center and Nick: together
we made this happen. They gave me a timeline and were
early on everything. It was one of the best experiences
I had building this business from the ground up. It was
great, and I will use Magnolia again.”

When it comes to premium audio and video components, every nuance of every product
is taken into consideration: from interior wiring, to the choice of woods and metals, to the
design, technology and functionality. Nothing is an afterthought. Then, we bring these hi-end,
hi-tech products home and place them in a cabinet that might look nice, but that does nothing
to address these components wiring, cooling and accessability needs. Thankfully the premium home
furnishings Magnolia offers combine both stunning design and high-performance functionality,
providing home entertainment furniture that rivals the design, experience and style you get from your
favorite audio and video gear.
Form & functionality
When it comes to the furniture we choose to house our
A/V components in, there are plenty of things to consider.
Is there enough space for my components? Are the
shelves tall enough? Where are the holes for the cords
located? You may also need a space for your soundbar
or all your Blu-ray discs and video games. And what
about keeping the gear cool so it doesn’t over-heat in an
enclosed cabinet? Fear not my friend: the A/V furniture
that Magnolia offers has all of these things covered, and
then some.
Whether it’s a modern steel-and-glass open
design, or a classic all-wood closed cabinet, one
important thing to consider in any piece of A/V furniture
is cable management. With a nearly endless barrage of
cables and cords from the components, you can easily
find yourself with a bird’s nest of wires cluttering up the
inside and back of your cabinet. But with A/V furniture
from Magnolia, nearly every model offers some form
of cable management system, alleviating the clutter,
and helping you organize your cords for easy future
adjustments. Some even come with removable back
panels making installation a breeze.
You’ll also find adjustable shelving, so no matter
the size of your components, they’re sure to fit, allowing
you to configure the inside of the cabinet to your specific
needs, not the needs of the furniture’s designer. Built-
in vents also help to keep your components cool, while

brands like Salamander take it one step further, offering
integrated fans – helping to keep even the hottest-running
components cool and running at peak performance.
Got a soundbar? Many of these cabinets are
built with spaces specifically designed for them, either
concealing them behind audio cloth, or leaving them
open but tucked away inside the cabinet. Bell’O even
offers TV stands that have a soundbar built into them,
for a completely seamless look. These Bell’O digital
speakers also feature Bluetooth® connectivity.
You’ll also find cabinets in Magnolia’s arsenal
with IR-friendly glass, storage for your movies or video
games, hidden wheels for moving the cabinet and even
soft-close doors.

Have even more specific needs? How about a
stand for a turntable. Bell’O offers a unique wooden
stand that’s not only stunning visually, but the top opens
to reveal your turntable. If you need room to grow,
Salamander offers modular units that can expand as your
system grows. The possibilities are nearly endless.
Theater seating
Home theater seating takes the concept of the seats
you’ll find in an actual theater, and lifts it to a whole other
level. Even if your local cinema has reclining seats, it’s
surely missing the host of benefits you’ll find from what
Magnolia can give you. Brands like Salamander and
Octane Seating offer premium leather seats that feature
motorized recline, as well as removable tray tables
and wall-away recline which allows full recline even
when you place the chair just inches from a wall. Not
enough? Octane Seating also offers heated seats with
massage; wine glass, smartphone and tablet brackets;
storage within the armrests; as well as LED-lit baserails
and cup holders for a clean, glowing look. Salamander
theater chairs even allow you to add bass through their
Clark Tactile Sound Transducer™. This is a disk that can
be added to any Salamander theater chair to produce
vibrations over the full range of tactile and audible
frequencies – so you’re literally feeling the action of the
movie.
Designed for any décor
No matter the features or the benefits of these cabinets,
stands and theater seats, if they don’t look as good as
the 4K movie on your screen, what’s the point? With our
portfolio of premium brands like Bell’O, Salamander
and Octane Seating, this is never a concern. Enjoy
an incredible array of colors, styles, wood grains and
leathers, for the right look for your room, with quality
that is second to none. So, whether you’re design
conscious, function conscious, or both, Magnolia has
the home entertainment furniture to fit your space, your
components, and the design aesthetics of even the most
finicky homeowner.

BUILDING STRONG[ER] RELATIONSHIPS
Since 1954, Magnolia has followed 10 simple rules, put forth by founder Len Tweten,
to provide exceptional customer service. These rules, or as they are affectionately
known, “Len’s 10 commandments,” are as true today as they were back when Mr.
Tweten was selling his first stereo speaker. Today, those who follow them closest
have enjoyed incredible success: as people, as employees and as audio and video
experts. From day one, Magnolia Specialty Sales Manager, Chelsie Kile, found great
inspiration in these goals. Now, six years later, Chelsie is an inspiring example of
what Mr. Tweten hoped every Magnolia employee and manager would be.
A passion for every client
“Magnolia’s biggest capacity for success is the building of relationships,” Chelsie told us.
“I figured that out early on and continue to foster long-term relationships with clients to
this day. Great client relationships are something I’m very passionate about. I moved with
Magnolia from Dallas to Scottsdale a few years ago, and I still have clients from Dallas
calling me about buying a new product or getting A/V advice.”
Chelsie went on to say, “It’s the clients we already have who are most important to
us. Sure, we worry about future business, but we worry more about our existing clients.
There are endless possibilities for the client. It’s our job to show them what’s possible and
give them that wow experience.”
Endless support
“We’re there to support every client who walks through our doors,” Chelsie explained.
“And now with Magnolia Care, we’re able to fully support the client and be more hands
on. The expectation with every client is that the System Designer is going to be your go-
to person, someone you can trust and rely on. We’re not just selling the newest TV and
moving on to the next customer. We’re there to make sure that their spouse, kids, even
their mother-in-law, are enjoying the experience. We stay relevant with the customers for
months and years after the sale.”
“At the end of the day, we’re in the people business. The biggest thing for us is
building and fostering relationships with our clients and the core to our success is our
passion around Len’s 10 commandments. We live and breathe them every single day.”
