Held for the third consecutive year, Shell Technical Case Challenge (TCC) 2012 received

overwhelming responses from students in National University of Singapore (NUS) and

Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Out of more than 150 applications, 24 third-

and fourth-year students from the departments of Chemical and Mechanical Engineering

were selected for this exciting challenge.

At the event, students were briefed on the refi nery basics; followed by an ice breaking session,

before working on a two-hour case study that was developed using real life situations in

refi nery operations. To reach an optimal overall solution, participants demonstrated strong

team spirit and leveraged on each others specializations, whilst working under time pressure.

The teams also impressed with their analytical skills and sound technical judgment in the fi nal

pitches to the judges, who were made up of a panel of experienced Shell Technical managers.

Eventually Team Deer Park, consisting of Ng Liang Hung (NUS), Lew Chi Min Junie (NUS),

Chang Cheong Joo Andre (NTU) and Lim Zheng Long (NTU) was awarded the fi rst prize for

its most comprehensive solution, followed by Team Bukom (Koh Yu Ing Ramona NTU, Au

Meng Jun NUS, Juliana Wijaya NTU, Zhang Xiaoxi NUS) and Team Rheinland (Li Jian

NUS, Tian Jiaxing NTU, Filipus Ferdian Triyonoputro NTU, Ong Zhe Han NUS) in fi rst

and second runner-up respectively. Besides attractive prizes, the students had the valuable

opportunity to interact with the campus ambassadors (Shell graduate hires), managers and HR

executives throughout the entire event. This activity offered students an insight into Shell, our

culture and the dynamism of working for one of the biggest Oil and Gas major in the world,

which we are certain they will take away with after the event!

The Shell Campus Ambassador team would like to congratulate the winning

teams and thank everyone who has made this event a success. The team will

also be planning their next activity in Quarter 1 of 2013, so do look out for it!

The above sums up the experience of a group of 24 students, who attended the Shell Technical Case Challenge (TCC) 2012 on Oct 1, 2012.

Worrying about what to prepare for your partner this coming V-day? Fret not and try out the recipes we have here and satisfy your mates stomach. As the saying goes, the way to a mans heart is through his stomach. That applies to all you guys out there too!

heat and heat until the sugar dissolves. Cool the vinegarmixture.

Spread the hot steamed rice into a large non-metallic bowl. Sprinkle the vinegar mixture over the rice and fold the rice by a rice spatula quickly. Be careful not to smash the rice. To cool and remove the moisture of the rice well, use a fan as you mix sushi rice. This will give sushi rice a shiny look.

Place 1 sheet of seaweed on bamboo mat, press a thin layer of cool rice on the seaweed. Leave at least 1/2 inch top and bottom edge of the seaweed uncovered. This is for easier sealing later. Dot some wasabi on the rice. Arrange cucumber, avocado and smoked salmon to the rice. Position them about 1 inch away from the bottom edge of the seaweed.

Slightly wet the top edge of the seaweed. Roll from bottom to the top edge with the help of the bamboo mat tightly. Cut roll into 8 equal pieces and serve. Repeat for other rolls.

    APPLE STRUDEL

Ingredients for Strudel Pastry:225g plain flour, plus extra for kneading1 whole egg 125ml warm milk teaspoon salt30g butter, melted

Ingredients for Apple Filling:5 pink lady apples60ml brandy 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon55g of raisins55g of flaked almondsZest of 1 lemon165g of brown sugar125g fresh sourdough breadcrumbs60g butter, melted for brushingAdditional Ingredients:Icing sugar, for dustingDouble cream, to serve

    Steps:Preheat oven to 180C.

For pastry, place flour, egg, milk and salt in the bowl of an electric mixer and beat at a low speed to combine. Add butter, increase speed and beat to a smooth dough. Turn onto a lightly floured bench and knead until smooth, elastic and doesnt stick. Place in an oiled bowl, cover and allow to rest for 35-40 minutes.

For filling, peel, core and quarter apples. Roughly cut into medium chunks. Place in a bowl with brandy, cinnamon, raisins, almonds and lemon zest and toss to combine.

Reserve 1/3 of each brown sugar and breadcrumbs and set to one side. Add the remaining brown sugar and breadcrumbs to the apple mixture, toss to combine and allow to sit, covered, for flavours to infuse.

Sprinkle bench with flour, roll out dough to a rectangle approximately 40x60cm and very thin. Take a 60cmx80cm piece of cloth or clean tea towel and sprinkle with plain flour. Use a rolling pin to help you transfer the pastry onto the cloth and gently pull pastry by the edges until it is transparent. Ensure thick areas are worked to a similar transparency and dough isnt sticking to the cloth. Trim edges.

Sprinkle pastry with reserved breadcrumbs and sugar, then spoon apple mix down the length of the pastry in a rectangular shape 3-4inches wide and piled up high. Sprinkle apple and pastry with reserved breadcrumbs and brown sugar.

To roll, use the cloth to fold the ends of the pastry over apples to encase, fold the sides of the pastry over to seal and roll up loosely into a thick, plump and elongated strudel shape.

Transfer to a baking paper-lined oven tray and brush with melted butter. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until golden and pastry is crisp.

Allow to cool slightly before dusting heavily with icing sugar.

    Dressing fOr

Engineers are recognized in school (i.e in other faculties too) by our trademark t-shirts, shorts / berms and slippers. We seem to go everywhere in those comfys, but how should we dress up for the different occasions?

Guys, we know that the ratio of males to females in Engin is the same as pi. So how do you stand out among your fellow competitors for that cute chick you just passed by at the corridor? Other than dressing like youre heading to town, a more subtle way is to wear bright colours. This is not to say you should parade around school in the yellow FOE dry fit tee, which is so common nobody would take a second look at it. A nice bright tee with a funny/ cool design coupled with a pair of jeans/ chinos would probably do the trick. Also, do take note to stride into class with your bag over one shoulder if youre using a backpack. Carrying the backpack the primary school way is not very cool when youre dressed like a coolio dude (unless your strategy is the Im a nerd at this module so you can always ask me if you need help).

They say a first impression lasts. Creating a deep first impression would of course ensure that you stay memorable even in the waitress eyes. Most would dress conservatively, but it depends on your girl. If she is sweet and shy, go for the casual gentlemen look with a shirt and chinos. Take care to not look as if you are preparing to go to work, you can always un-tuck the back of your shirt if youre _WWwearing a collared one. However if youve got a wild and sexy girl, go for a bolder look with shirt and vest, or a cool biker jacket. Be careful though, not everyone can pull off a vest without looking like a waiter. When all fails, you can always wear eye liner for the goo-goo eyes effect like how the Korean artistes do.

If your purpose is to land a few ladies' numbers, youd better dress to impress. We know that guys have limited choices in the wardrobe as compared to the ladies. This is why accessories matter! Accessories ensure that you do not look like any other person and also say a lot about your personality. Simple little things such as a skinny tie, a pair of nerdy lens-less specs, a tie bow would add flavor to the otherwise standard shirt and pants. If youre feeling sexy, throw on a leather jacket, which could up your chance of knowing those hot dancing chicks at the dance floor. Do remember to leave the first button (maybe the second too if you have a nice chest) undone for a sexier look.

Chances are, your exams would be held at the same time as several other modules. Which means youll get to check out those Biology girls who are taking the same GEM module as you, and those Sociology girls who are taking their finals in the hall next to yours. How do you capture their attention when youre waiting for the hall doors to open? A good and practical way is to have a wool or cotton pullover (crew or V-neck) over a collared shirt. Not only does this combination keep you warm in the chilly exam halls, itll also give you that Japanese college student vibe that some girls love.

Although there are few girls in Engin, it doesntmean there are NO girls in Engin. However, ona normal school day, youll stand out simply bywearing a dress to tutorial. Yours truly had sat atthe last row in a class and had witnessed the rowof rooster/bald/bird nest hair heads slowly rotatingto follow a girl as she sashayed in to take a seat.Just be sure to enter a few minutes late so that themaximum number ofguys will be there.

FirsT DaTeYou cant go wrong with a dress, or a pretty top and skirt. Spice up your outfit with statement accessories, and check that your armpits are bald if your top is sleeveless. Bonus points will be given if you can magically transform (i.e. using eyeliner and gang) your eyes into those big watery anime eyes. However, advanced makeup techniques such as smokey eyes should be avoided if you are a noob at makeup. The last thing you want is to look like someone punched you in the eyes.

  • 13FUSETHE

    FOR HER

    WARDROBE

TuTorial wiThGirls have the privileges of having a myriad of choices. Purposely wear a low cut bra beneath a see-through lace top if you want free drinks that night. If youre feeling adventurous, take your Daddys shirt and cut holes at strategic locations. Pair the shirt with a belt and youre good to go! For the conservative ladies, mini dresses are your best bet. To show off your sexy contours, buy two sizes down from your usual size so that the cloth hugs your body like a rice dumpling. However, if youre a size S lady, you might have to go shopping at KiddyPalace.

Bare more skin. This is especially so for the modules with help sheets. A low cut top or a pair of mini shorts that shows off your butt cheeks when you walk are immensely helpful to ensure that you can successfully steal those help sheets your admirers are holding onto. Dont worry, theyll be too distracted to notice what your sneaky hands are doing. This is potentially the best way to pull the bell curve towards you, no matter where you are.

  • Picking up chicks

There have been lots of controversies about starting the first move and since primitive times, men have been able to approach woman so why not you? Here are some tips if you have been trying and yet rip no results.

BE CONFIDENTWomen like men who care about themselves, the way they look, dress, how they hold their forks and spoons, even habits like scratching your nose or shaking your legs while on idle. They DO notice it. I propose a vital mirror check before going out with a girl you like or even if she happens to be your schoolmate, it is always good to leave a good impression of yourself. When you are groomed in a way that seems satisfactory, you will be inclined to being confident of yourself and in that way, you will not be too shy to look into her eyes or even feel inferior when being around her. (if shes the goddess that you deem she is)

GIVE GIFTSEveryone loves receiving presents dont they. Heres a season to be jolly lalalal lalala. Always try to give her something that could remind her of you, it doesnt necessarily mean diamonds or expensive items, save those for later. Youll be surprised that the ones that actually move her would be handmade presents like a pretty card or letter or even food.

  • FUSETHE

Im not drunk, Im just intoxicated by you.

I was so enchanted by your beauty that I ran into that wall over there. So I am going to need your name and number for insurance purposes..

If I were a stop light, Id turn red everytime you passed by, just so I could stare at you a bit longer.

For a moment I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Now I see that I am very much alive, and heaven has been brought to me.

Sorry, but you owe me a drink. [Why?] Because when I looked at you, I dropped mine.

Do you have a BandAid? I just scraped my knee falling for you.

Be unique and different, say yes.. Fascinating. Ive been looking at

your eyes all night long, cause Ive never seen such dark eyes with so much light in them.

Most people like to watch the Olympics, because they only happen once every 4 years, but Id rather talk to you cause the chance of meeting someone so special only happens once in a lifetime.

Youre so beautiful that you made me forget my pickup line.

You shouldnt wear makeup. Its messing with perfection!.

If a thousand painters worked for a thousand years, they could not create a work of art as beautiful asyou.

Damn, if being sexy was a crime,

Shell remember those for sure. By giving her gifts, not only will she be happy, it would also be a less obvious sign that shell know that you find interest in her instead of having so tell herso.

BE YOURSELFThere is no need to complicate things by trying to be someone that youre not. Imagine waking up one day not being that person that you have been showing to her and what will happen? Shell get an even greater shock than she would have if you had just been yourself from the start. If there are things that she seems

    PICKUP CHICKS

dissatisfied with you about, make changes! Its always good to have a compromise if you think that she isnt what you think she is as well.

MAKE HER THE MAIN ATTRACTION You need to give her your 110% attention. You could start things going by commenting on how beautiful she looks, noticing things about her thats new. A haircut, brow trim, lipstick, nail polish, etc.. Shell feel as though you have been noticing her all this while (which you do cause youre a stalker) and let blood rush to her face. Itll be a bonus if you see how cute she is when

she blushes. Dont get too close though, if youve just started out as friends, observe the spaces in between you both and not rush into trying to creep close. Shell just think youre a creep and most likely be disgusted.

Hopefully these few tips are of help to you guys out there.

    Happy valentines!

PICK UP LINES. FOR THE BOLD AND CLUELESS.youd be guilty as charged!

I was wondering if you had an extra heart mine seems to have been stolen

Smoking is hazardous to your health... and baby, youre killing me!

There isnt a word in the dictionary for how good you look.

Me without you is like a nerd without braces, A shoe without laces, aSentenceWithoutSpaces

Is there an airport nearby or is that just my heart taking off?

When Im older, Ill look back at all of my crowning memories, and Ill think of the day my children were born, the day I got married, and the day that I met you.

Are you from Tennessee? Because youre the only ten I see!

Are you an interior decorator? When i saw you the room becamebeautiful.

There is something wrong with my cell phone. It doesnt have your number in it.

Baby, if you were words on a page, youd be what they call FINE PRINT!

You must be a hell of a thief because you stole my heart from across the room.

Do you have a twin sister? [NO?] Then you must be the most beautiful girl in the world!

You look beautiful today, just like every other day.

If you were a booger Id pick youfirst.

If I were to ask you out on a date,

would your answer be the same as the answer to this question?

If this bar is a meat market, you must be the prime rib.

Are you lost maam? Because heaven is a long way from here.

Im fighting the urge to make you the happiest woman on earth tonight.

My love for you is like diarrhea, I just cant hold it in.

Hey baby youre so fine you make me stutter, wha-wha-whats yourname?

I bet you $20 youre gonna turn medown.

Do you have the time? [Tells you the time] No, the time to write down mynumber?

Would you grab my arm so I can tell my friends Ive been touched by anangel?

Rejection can lead to emotional stress for both parties involved and emotional stress can lead to physical complications such as headaches, ulcers, cancerous tumors, and even death! So for my health and yours, JUST SAY YES

It doesnt take much to identify what your crush or your loved one is like. Just observe his habits and hobbies. Here below are the most desirable gifts for both types listed below.

As the norm, handmade cards and items would be the most sentimental. Below are some exotic items that would rather surprise rather than get all mushy. For more ideas on mens gifts you can visit coolmaterial.com.

GIFTS FOR HERMost girls love sentimental stuff. Things that would remind them of memorable occasions or even things that are symbols of love and affection. They also want to receive practical things like notebooks, diaries, etc.. try not to give something that will become a white elephant in time to come. Here is a list of things that would help you to leave a good impression if not, make your love one feel extremely special.

Try to make her a meal, bake something for her. Let her know she is special. Do something that youve never done for anyone before.

Shell definitely show you what she wants when she is window shopping, DO NOT BUY THAT FOR HER IMMEDIATELY. Surprise her during special occasions with those gifts to show that you remember things about her and also really shower your love upon her.

    All the best.

Picture tiles (inexpensive yet beautiful)If your mate enjoys placing pictures in her house, make them: PICTURE TILES! Even better, if you use a waterproof spray coating, they can easily turn into a set of coasters. Glue some thin cork material on the bottom for extra gripping power. Whether youre making picture tiles or coaster, you can expect each of these to cost around 50 to 75 cents. But the thought that goes into them? Priceless.

GENERAL SECRETARYCHIAM ZI LIANGMaterial Sciences and Engineering | Year 2

My basic job scope involves the performing of routine administrative functions which are focused on supporting the planning and running of EnginClub events. This includes facilities bookings as well as email blasting. Not only that, I also play an overseeing role for Engin noticeboards publicity, the EnginClubs storeroom and the EnginClubs Sports Committee. Other duties will include convening meetings, transcribing meeting minutes, maintaining EnginClub internal database and the managing of EnginClubs Clubroom. All these are so as to facilitate a smoother workflow within the club, so that EnginClub can better serve the students.

FINANCE SECRETARYSOH YI XUANChemical Engineering | Year 2

The role of the Financial Secretary is to ensure that the club funds remain healthy and also provide monetary support to club events. What I do is basically ensure that money is spent wisely on events that can benefit the student population in two areas. One, to engage them more in the activities we plan, and two bring about changes to enhance both tangible and intangible student welfare. On top of that, I also ensure that the money spent is justifiable to the students and make sure that there is minimal wastage of resources.

SECRETARY FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS (INTERNAL)DING XIN YIBioengineering | Year 2

As Secretary for Student Affairs (Internal), I focus on the general welfare of the student population and function as the think tank of initiatives to improve your student life in Engin, basically in 2 board categories: Academics and, Facilities and Services.

Other than past efforts with the office to get the Subway kiosk to Engin, there are also ongoing efforts to improve feedback for lecturers and modules, increase and build more studying areas with more services such as printing etc, improve transport for Engineering students and the long term Techno edge expansion plan, just to name a few.

So, if you have any issues from your modules, lecturers, curriculum to having not enough facilities for academic purposes, do feel free to feedback at http://www.enginclub.com/index.php/feedback and let your voices be heard!

WELFARE DIRECTORALVIN NAH Bioengineering | Year 1

In the current term of office, Welfare is being defined as safeguarding the interests of students and to provide a platform for the students to act in their best interests. As a welfare director of the 35th Committee, I strive to reach out to more students through events such as the welfare giveaways and other self-initiated initiatives. Besides that, obtaining feedback from the student population is also a key part of my job scope, this is so as to ensure that the policies formulated do actually benefit the majority of the student population. Some of the major improvements include the new addition of the Subway vendor and the ATM which is made available beside technoedge.

SPORTS DIRECTOR RYAN YOUNG Bioengineering | Year 1

The Sports Director has to be sporty. NOT TRUE! With that out of the way, my role as the sports director is to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle among engineers. Previous events organised include the new and exciting sport of Bossaball, the Beach Carnival and a Frisbee Clinic. This year the Sports Committee will be holding an ice skating event and a rock climbing clinic to be held during term 2 so do look out for the sign ups and join when it opens! Additionally we provide our Inter-Faculty Games players with all the support they require during the annual IFG (champions onceagain).

COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR NICHOLAS LIEW Mechanical Engineering | Year 3

Communication is critical in ensuring good relations between people. Likewise, it is the key to which Engin Club can better serve its student. The Communications committee serves as the tool in which Engin Club utilize to reach out to the students. We aim to generate awareness of Engin Club activities amongst the student population. In addition, publication of The Fuse is for the entertainment of the student population. It is a break from the mundane student life of studying intellectual content. Look out for the next issue of the Magazine for more entertaining updates!

  • Held for the third consecutive year, Shell Technical Case Challenge (TCC) 2012 received

overwhelming responses from students in National University of Singapore (NUS) and

    SHELLTECHNICALCASE CHALLENGE 2012
