The program is geared for children aged six and older accompanied by adults. The 320 seats in The Playhouse will be available on a first-come first-served basis. We thank CUNA Mutual Group and Overture Center for helping us present this exciting look at chamber music. Join us for a kiddie cocktail in the lobby with the musicians afterwards! STEPHANIE SAYS Jim Crow, a world-famous geneticist short-listed for a Nobel Prize, revered as an example of a life well lived, passed away in January at age 96. Much has been written about his brilliance as a scientist and his knack for explaining difficult concepts in ways that non- scientists could appreciate. But folks, that’s not the half of it. I was introduced to Jim and his wife Ann at my first faculty recital at UW-Madison in 1990. I thought, “Oh, they seem nice,” and then I started seeing them everywhere. You couldn’t turn around without running into them! There they were at the UW Opera, the Madison Opera, and Pro Arte Quartet performances. And wow! There was Jim, at the back of the viola section of the Madison Symphony! Jim and Ann were the busiest concert-goers I have ever known, always listening with deep satisfaction. When Ann died, I worried that Jim’s zest for living would diminish. But Jim heard more concerts than ever, if that were even possible, and seemed to find in music the solace and strength he needed to move on. His star shone bright once again. Jim’s recall of repertoire and performances he’d attended was astounding. A party animal, he’d go out with us after every concert, order a Manhattan and regale us with stories of programs he’d heard and musicians we idolized, and he’d always be the last to leave. When Jim performed a solo viola recital to celebrate his 90th birthday, virtually every professional musician in the Madison area was in the audience cheering him on. He played with the understanding, commitment, and light touch he brought to all his endeavors. Jim was truly one of us, and we adored him. In his last months, he observed his body deteriorating with the objectivity of the scientist and kept altering his behavior to accommodate his body’s demands. But his charisma and intelligence never altered. Until the end, nothing could keep Jim Crow apart from the people and the music he loved. For Jeffrey and me, Jim’s presence in our lives as a musician and patron was both a comfort and an inspiration. In 2002, he joined the board of Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society and guided our development with a sure hand and an easy laugh. One of the best supporters we’ve ever had, Jim was generous both as a steward and as a contributor. His joie de vivre will be missed by people all over the world who were lucky enough to be close to him. We will never see his like again, but his spirit and sense of delight will be with us always. BDDS has established a memorial fund in Jim’s name. Gifts will used to support musicians’ fees and will be gratefully acknowledged in our programs and newsletters. THE FUN AT BDDS ISN’T JUST FOR GROWN-UPS.

This year’s free family concert will be on Saturday, June 23, at 11:00 a.m. in The Playhouse at Overture Center.

“Feel the Beat” will be an interactive event featuring percussionists Dane Richeson and Anthony Di Sanza,

pianists Jeffrey Sykes and Randall Hodgkinson, and Stephanie Jutt on flute. They will talk about and play

selections from Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, Bela Bartok’s Sonata for two

pianos and percussion, and Kenji Bunch’s Velocity for flute and piano.

The program is geared for children aged six and older accompanied by adults. The 320 seats in The Playhouse will

be available on a first-come first-served basis. We thank CUNA Mutual Group and Overture Center for helping us

present this exciting look at chamber music. Join us for a kiddie cocktail in the lobby with the musicians afterwards!

    STEPHANIE SAYS

Jim Crow, a world-famous geneticist short-listed for a Nobel Prize, revered as an example

of a life well lived, passed away in January at age 96. Much has been written about his

brilliance as a scientist and his knack for explaining difficult concepts in ways that non-

scientists could appreciate. But folks, that’s not the half of it.

I was introduced to Jim and his wife Ann at my first faculty recital at UW-Madison in 1990.

I thought, “Oh, they seem nice,” and then I started seeing them everywhere. You couldn’t

turn around without running into them! There they were at the UW Opera, the Madison

Opera, and Pro Arte Quartet performances. And wow! There was Jim, at the back of the

viola section of the Madison Symphony! Jim and Ann were the busiest concert-goers I have

zest for living would diminish. But Jim heard more concerts than ever, if that were even
