Howevcr, nothing like good rc- minders to keep from going to "sleep at the switch."

Coleman Improving. Bert Coleman, for several years Bridge

Inspector, with headquarters a t Neodesha, ICans., and who has heen confined to the Frisco IIospital in St. Louis for the last six months suffering from sciatic rheumatism, is reported to be slowly inl- proving. Before coming to St. Louis, Mr. Coleman spent two months a t Hot Springs. He has many friends among the Employes who will he glad to Itnow that hc is improving, and who join the Frisco-Man in wishing him a speedy recovery.

Popular Brakeman Dead. Mr. J. 4. Langlord, one of the most

popular brakemen on the south end, died January 18, a t the Frisco Hospital in Springfield, after a few days' illness. He \\la? ahout 30 years old, and for the last eight years has heen in the employ of the Frisco.

Old Conductor Retires. Franlc Doggrell, who has heen in the

cn~ploy of the Frisco for 40 years as conductor, I~etween Memphis and Bir- mingham, retired from active service January 30, his seventieth birthday anni- versary. L4r. Doggrell is the father of J. 11. Doggrell, General Superintendent of Transportation.

Engineer Promoted. Tom Ilolland, an engineer on the Frisco

since 1900. has been promoted to the position of traveling assistant superinten- dent of locomotive performance. His territory will he from h4onett to Ellsworth, Kan., and branches, n i th headquarters in Joplin.

Mr. Holland hcgan working for the I'risco when a mere lad, worliing n i lh a steel gang carrying water in 1889.

IIe went to Monett in 1893 as train caller and held other minor positions

until 1899 when he began "firing." I-Ie was made engineer in 1900.

'I'he boys are glad to hear of his pro- motion, and wish him much success in his nen position.

The St. Loui?, Arkansas arid 'Tcsas Iiail\vay Company \\'as incorporaled in Missouri to co11st1-uct the line from Monett (then Plymouth) to the Missouri- Arkanxis State Line. 'I'he same company \\as incorporated in :-\rl.;ansas to construct the line from said Statc linc to a point just a t the mouth of the Geveraus Cut on the north side, in Fayetteville. Much temporary bridging was as soon as possible replaced with an embanlmcnt built by means 01 steam shovel. Continu- ous and grievous slides had to be con- tended with and great expense \\as in- curred in removing the material sliding into the road bed and track. I t was nec- essary to work steam shovcls, all the teams available and hundreds of laborers a t times, particularly alter a heavy rain when the slopes of the mountain side w u l d become saturated.

The construction of the bricljic across the Arliansas River a t Van Buren was 11egun in the spring or early winter of 1883 and was opened fur traflic in thc early spring of 1886.

Some 56 pound English steel was used in laying the track from Paris nortlward.

We buy mostly 90 pound rails 11o\v.

After the line \\-as opened up to Paris we had double daily through passenger train service. with equipment consisting of one cornhination, one baggage, one coach and one small slcel)cr on the night trains. \Ye hat1 also two r c k ~ l a r freight trains daily cach \yay and extra freijiht trains as 1)usiness derna~~ded. After supper together a t the Webb Hotel everyone went to the Assemhly room over the station where about one hundred and fifty persons enjoyed an evening dancing. M~usic iurnished by a Hugo Orchestra.

'The meeting was called to order a t 2-15 P. 1\11. February 8, by the President.

Dr. A. S. Barnes, Jr., was then intro- duced and he entertained the ladies for about an hour with one of the most interesting Safety First talks that they have ever heard. I>r. Barnes took up the Saiety First work from the health stand-point giving many illustrations. The ladies were permitted to ask ques- tions-and all thoroughly enjoyed it.

Our iriend and staunch supporter, h4r. Spaulding, also gave the ladies a Iinc talk and particularly tried to impress them with the idea oi co-operation as the best means to the desired results of the Safety First Adovcment on the Frisco.

on this ra111-oad are equipped with the Vapor System of Heatinq manufactured by the Chicago Car Heating Company.

These cars have live radiatir~q pipes on each s ~ d c , divided into two circuits of two and three pipes. Each circuit has its own Cut-out Valve so that i t is possible to give heat in either two pipes, three pipes or live pipes on each side of the car.

With this arran::ement any degree of regulation which could be desired is possible and with a little jutlgnlent the trainmen can keep the cars in comfort- able ternl)eratt~rc a t any and all times.

In mild nchather only part of the sys- teni should bc. used. This will malie it more comfortable for the passengers and he more economical lor the company.

r Quince Tapioca.

Peel ripe quinces o i medium size and cut out the cores. Steam them until tender but not soft. Set them in a baking dish and fill the core cavities, which should have been made rather large, with sugar. Cook one-half cupful of ground or instant tapioca in one quart of water, with a little salt and sugar to taste. Let cook for fifteen minutes, then pour over the quinces, cover the dish and bake for half an hour. Serve with crcam and sugar. Anothcr method that is verv nice, is to mix the quinces, sliced (aiter steaming tender), with the boil- ctl tapioca, and hake them.

r Heart Sandwiches.

On a thin slice of buttered bread lay a lettuce leaf, spread with mayonnais? dressing, and sprinkle lightly with grated chcese and finely minccd ICn~lish \valnuls. Lay another slice of buttered bread over the mixture, and with a sharp knife trim into heart shapes.

Frisco Lady. She says "As meat is high, do not

throw away an); small portion thal might be left over after a meal. Take this meat, grind up a cupful, add two cups of tomatoes, hot, a small onion, salt and sufiar 10 suit taste, and a quarter lea- spoonful of red pepper. Boil logclher and serve hot wilh boiled polalcxs.

Cupid Salad. Make a plain tomato jelly and let

it harden in n large flat vessel. When the jelly is well set, cut it into heart- shaped pieces and place each piece on crisp leaves of lettuce. Prepare a cup- iul of stoned olivcs, sliced, and chopped cucumber pickle. Mix these with may- onnaise, and place a little heap of them upon each red jelly heart.

Salmon Hearts. Cut very hghl bread ~ n t o sliccs a

quarter of an inch thick. Cut them into heart shapes. I3rush both sides with melted butte1 and put into the oven to brown. When the h e a ~ t s h a w cool- ed, spread each with a thick coatins of canned salmon. Around the edges ol the hearts place a border o f finely minced hard-l~oiled eqes, thc whites only, and and sliccs of lomon. Serve on small plates g a r n ~ + ~ l with parhley, or placc the hearl\ o n Iellucc leaves, letting the curly lettuce leaves extend almost t o the edge ot the plates.

Divide the mixture into thrcc pasts, in one ol which place rnarshmallo\vs and \vhite grapes, in the second one put pine- apple and oranges, and in the third nuts. Fill individual glasses \vith dilicrcnt rnis- tures and serve them. =

Crumb Cake. Put three cupluls o l silted flour into a

mixing bowl, one and one-hall cupfuls dark b r o w sugar and four or five tca- spoonluls o l cocoa or chocolate. Stir all together, then add one-hall cupful buttel- and rub ingl-rdients together as lor pie crust. Add one cuplul of sour milk, one teaspoonful o l soda and a pinch ol salt; beat all together. Add half a teaspimnir~l each ol whole cloves and allspice, a tcaspooniul o i celery seed and thrcc or lour bay leaves. Set the pan in a slow oven and allow the fish to barely simmer lor five hours.
