Letter from Colin Dear Parents and Pupils, We have had a wonderful week all coming back together and sharing holiday stories. A fantastic buzz throughout the school is a clear indication of everyone’s joy to be connected with old friends and an eager willingness to make new friendships. I am sure the Monday morning alarm was a shock for most, but well worth it!

Thought of the week A note about Thought of the week - I share this with the pupils every Monday in assembly, it is up in the ‘Well’ (assembly space) all week. It is to get the children thinking, asking questions and reflecting.

Some highlights from the week that was…

It was lovely to look out to the sea of smiling faces during assembly on Monday. I talked about the expectations for being a Dunhurstian and the importance of integrity - as per the ‘Thought of the week’. There were a number of Rounders’ trophies together with, LAMDA and Music certificates to hand out to the children for their efforts in the Summer term - congratulations to them all.

The Football season got off to a great start on Wednesday with victories for both the U9 and U11 teams. The U13s trained hard in preparation for their first match next Wednesday. Meanwhile, both the courts and astro were full of activity as the girls’ Hockey and Netball teams were eagerly preparing for the season ahead. Outdoor Work (ODW) lessons are well underway. There has been weed tackling, chicken rehoming, assisting with moving the sheep to new pastures, wild flower seed planting, popcorn popping (and eating) and the bees have been incredibly busy providing lots of delicious liquid gold for us to taste. We look forward to welcoming Katherine Vega to JAW today. Her passion is opening creative paths to a better future. This afternoon (4.30pm-5.15pm) is also the Groups’ Q & A session and tomorrow morning (12.30am-1.00pm) for Blocks’ parents. I look forward to seeing you there.

Letter from Colin Thank you to all parents who came and supported the FOD (Friends of Dunhurst) coffee on Monday. The FOD’s are an integral part of our community and I thank you in advance for all of your efforts with upcoming events this term. I had a lovely meeting with the Chair of FODs, Charlotte Doyle, this morning. I am sure you have, or soon will be, contacted by your Year Group reps and I have listed them below for ease:

After a quiet and restful summer, our boarding houses are now ringing with the sound of excited and happy

boarders catching up with friends and welcoming new faces. We have spent the week settling our full boarders in,

unpacking, decorating dorms and showing our new boarders the ropes. Tonight we are looking forward to our first

Friday Night Activity of the year; hopefully a camp fire and games in ODW and Cobb’s field, as long as the weather

is kind to us. This Sunday our weekend boarders will be enjoying a trip to the seaside with Steve.

A few reminders

Monday 9 September, 19.00-20.00 Karl Hopwood - Internet Safety parent talk. This is a talk not to be missed. Karl is an inspiration and you will no doubt leave his talk feeling better equipped for the 21st Century parenting challenges. All the pupils will have a workshop with Karl during the day. Thursday 12 September, 19.30-20.30 - ‘Learning How To Learn’. Again, this is another brilliant tool for your parenting tool box! All the pupils will have been involved in a workshop during the day. The talk to parents is to let you know what the children will have been taught, so as parents, you can support them in their learning. Saturday 14 September, 10.45-13.00 - Open Morning. If you have friends or family interested in learning more about our unique education, please encourage them to come along. Please email kfreeman@bedales.org.uk to book a place. All Groups children are invited in to help with the morning. Saturday 21 September – Badley Morning - More information to follow shortly, but please save the date. Everyone is welcome, parents, neighbours, siblings and dogs. Bacon baps on arrival followed by a community working bee, then the famous walk up to the Poet’s Stone (weather permitting) where there are views of Steep and Bedales with the South Downs as a backdrop. On return, a much needed hearty ploughman’s lunch will be available in the playground. Badley Morning will be finished by 13.00 with normal train times for boarders. Have a wonderful weekend and I look forward to seeing you and your children next week.

Name: Mark Hales Dunhurst Title: Maternity Cover for Design Teacher

Best book I have ever read: ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit’ – great memories of reading the whole set to Charlie before starting afresh with Felix just as we finished the last book – 6 years total!

Fond memory from my school days: Making things in the workshop and art rooms!

Most memorable movie: ‘Stand by Me’ – a great tale of coming of age and friendship.

Favourite music: 1980’s Indie (The Smiths, The Stone Roses, New Order, The Cure, Pixies etc), Acid Jazz and Motown (James Jamerson is a bass playing genius – I just need to practice a lot more!!)

Best Dunhurst moment (so far): In JB’s and hearing “Mark, Mark, I’ve done some extra 3D sketching at home and will bring it in to show you next week!”

Name: Inma Franco Gonzalez Dunhurst Title: Teacher of Modern languages

Best book I have ever read: ‘Jane Eyre’ by Charlotte Bronte is my very favourite, followed by ‘The Forgotten Garden’ by Kate Morton. It only took me two days to read them both. Amazing stories!

Fond memory from my school days: I loved staying for afternoon clubs because I got to spend more time with friends and taking part in different activities after lessons was just the perfect ending for the day.

Most memorable movie: I love movies that surprise you with a turn of events. Amongst my ultimate favourite movies I can list: ‘The Others’, ‘The Sixth Sense’, ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ and ‘The Scent of a Woman’. Favourite music: Some of the classics! A bit of Rush, Savage Garden, Michael Jackson, Queen, etc.

Best Dunhurst moment (so far): The school dynamics! It is always very busy and lively. It is great to be involved in not just in lessons but also activities, trips and events. It is great fun and I got to know everybody very fast because of it. Also, it is of great satisfaction to teach Spanish to such a wide range of ages, from Dunannie to Block 2. I love seeing pupils enjoying it so much!

Name: Penny Carpenter Dunhurst Title: Maternity Cover for Assistant Head of Music and Assistant Housemistress Best book I have ever read: ‘K2: The World’s Most Dangerous Mountain’ by Ed Viesturs, anything on adventure.

Fond memory from my school days: Cycling home!

Most memorable movie: ‘The Holiday’ (a Christmas favourite).

Favourite music: always have a theme of the week: This week I'm being mesmerised by the South African male choir - ‘LadySmith Black Mambazo’.

Best Dunhurst moment (so far): The luscious sounds of singing in harmony in class this morning.

Block 2 Design pupils were fascinated as they made a 3D dodecahedron and explored Leonardo’s polyhedra.

Group 1 made creative characters out of Dunhurst apples. This will lead into work on description, nouns and adjectives.

Block 1 enjoyed got to know the chickens and helped to move them to their new home.

Group 3N discussed what they know about World War II already (and what they would like to discover.

Group 3W examined war poetry and experienced ‘Blackout Poems’ with torches.

Group 2 sorted through pictures and made a start to their Victorian Topic.

MATCH RESULTS

U11B Football v Ditcham Park School (Draw 0-0) The U11B team were full of excitement and anticipation as they arrived at Ditcham Park for their first match of the season. After a quick motivational pep talk they were in position and eager to get on. As nervous as they were, eagerness shone through and the ball was passed about the pitch. Both teams placed many tackles and swapped ownership of the ball many times. All of the players played in as many positions as possible and fought for every ball until the final whistle. A great show of Commitment, communication and lessons learnt on control. Lots to work on before the next match but not a bad start to the season. Well played everyone. David U11A Football v Dunhurst v Ditcham (Won 8-4) Yesterday the U11 As faced Ditcham Park. We got off to a good start with Lorenzo scoring a great team goal. Two more goals by Henry and Tom. After a mistake in defence, Ditcham then got one back. Sebbie and Pendle were working really hard and made some great tackles in defence while Cassius and Luke played some brilliant passes. We scored another and went into half time 4-1 up. After a change in positions we got into the second half. Early on in the second half Ditcham scored a goal after it bounced around in the penalty spot. The game then opened up a lot more and we scored more goals by Tommy, Cassius and Henry while conceding 3. Some runs down the wing were dangerous by Tom and Seb with Henry working amazingly well. Tommy scored a hat-trick while Henry scored 2. The game finished 8-4 to Dunhurst. Tom was voted ‘Man of the Match’ by the other team. Well done and thankyou to Will and David for taking us. Joe C

PARENTS’ EVENTS THIS MONTH

There are some spaces still available on this month’s parents’ events, which are open to parents at all three schools. On 19 September, join us for a private vineyard tour and wine tasting at The Grange, Hampshire (pictured above), followed by supper at The Woolpack, Totford (£20 for the tour and wine tasting and £30 for a three-course meal excluding drinks - book here). We will meet at The Grange at 6pm or, alternatively, the school minibus will be on hand to take us from Bedales at 5.30pm and return us at the end of the evening for a small additional charge (please state if you would like a space on the bus when booking). Later in the month, there is an exclusive opportunity for a private tour of Old Bedalian Ivon Hitchens’ exhibition at Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, followed by a light lunch in the gallery’s restaurant (30 September, 10.30am-2pm, £20 - book here). HOME FROM HOME EXHIBITION

Home from Home is a solo exhibition of British painter Alex Rennie’s work at The Frestonian Gallery in London inspired by and in aid of Bedales-supported charity the Rural Refugee Network. The exhibition explores the theme of a British welcome in relation to the Syrian migrant crisis. A percentage of sales proceeds will be donated to both the Rural Refugee Network and it’s partner charity Children on the Edge. The charities rehouse Syrian refugees in the UK as well as educating displaced Syrian refugee children residing in the Lebanese refugee camps. Rather than portray explicit scenes of refugee life, Rennie has taken an alternative visual approach. The artist held a number of interviews and workshops with Syrian refugees and children that have been resettled in the UK by the Rural Refugee Network. The resulting artworks are informed by these testimonies as well as discussions with volunteers from the Rural Refugee Network about the successes they have had and the challenges they face. Among the imagery featured are teacups, sandcastles, flowers and flags. Visual references that are quintessentially British, but also have universal appeal. The paintings were created to reflect the notion of empowerment: that of the refugees themselves, but also empowering the public to take action and to play a part in tackling the worst humanitarian crisis of our generation. The exhibition runs for two days only, 24th and 25th September 2019 at the Frestonian Gallery in Notting Hill West London.
