THE FRIDAY FLIER
KOTAHITANGA
Waikato Waldorf School, Kindergartens and Playcircle
Kia ora tatou
It is with great sadness that I announce the death of Elvira Laus (one of our beloved parents) after a long battle with can-cer. Elvira joined our community with her son Antonio and husband Dean in our kindergarten. Many of our students and parents of Class 6 and staff joined the family in a celebration of her life, at Hamilton Park Cemetery on Thursday. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Antonio, Dean and Naumai. You are all in our hearts and thoughts.
“What we have once enjoyed deeply we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” Helen Keller
This is also a time for reflection in the first term of our new academic year. We remind ourselves of our core purpose and to that end we have reviewed our mission statement and values.

Dear community
Last year, we were able to build the new school office & take over the running of Miro House and
the Kindergarten as we saw the kindergarten and school as interdependent, this restructure was a
very challenging time for the PT and we will need to tighten up the budgets and get the finances un-
der control before we undertake any non-urgent or revenue generating expenditure.
This year, our focus will be on the Kindergarten, which needs to be upgraded. We continue to plan
for further upgrades to the school buildings and finalise a 5yr strategic plan to ensure every move
we make is deliberate and with the final goal in mind. To assist the PT we have created a Business
Manager role, which reports to the PT and allows someone to work in the business on the issues
that need to be dealt with regularly, allowing the PT to focus their efforts working on the school to
ensure we have a clear direction, set up systems and processes, measure our progress and are
plan for the future.
We would like to thank you for your ongoing generous support with the pledge. We urge everyone
to pledge what you can, then stick to your promise. We have a budget to manage and cashflow is
king. So being able to plan ahead with no surprises allows us to focus on creating a great environ-
ment for our kids. We do have a minimum requirement, which if it is not met will require us to come
back to you and ask you to reconsider your contribution. Pledges are being reviewed now and we
will come back to you with feedback on where they sit in relation to our expectations.
We as the PT are also responsible for the upholding of the special character of the school, so would
like to reinforce not only the financial pledge you have made, but also the behavioural one as
well. That is to uphold our principle’s, especially in relation to screentime, clothing and support at
home for the Steiner Principles – leading by example with our children at home makes it easier for
our teachers here at school.

First Aid for Little Explorers
Children are full of curiosity; they enjoy a little rough and tumble, and love to explore the world around them. And of
course they never walk if they can run, jump, hop or clamber instead. So it’s not surprising that they occasionally lose
their footing. Knees are grazed, wrists sprained or heads bumped. Sometimes a little kiss and a plaster make everything
better, but sometimes the injuries require first aid, and here natural medicines are a great help. Keep this little emergen-
cy first aid kit to hand on long journeys, days out or just at home and you will always be prepared to deal with minor acci-
dents.
Treating grazes
Grazes, especially to the knees, elbows and palms of the hands, are among the commonest injuries. Since it’s often only
the top layer of skin that is damaged, grazes usually do not bleed very much. Use calendula essence or saline (0.9%
solution) to clean them carefully of any dirt. If neither of these is available in an emergency, tap water or mineral water
may also be used. Then squeeze a little ointment from a tube of Weleda Calendula healing cream on to the affected ar-
ea. Its natural ingredients with their structuring power encourage the start of healing and promote regeneration of the
injured skin.
Relieve itching and burning sensations
With the warmer temperatures, mosquitoes, wasps and all their little friends are also out and about. And they are partic-
ularly fond of children's soft skin. Here, too, Weleda Burns and Bites Gel provides fast, effective relief. Apply a thin layer
of the gel to the affected area for a rapid, pleasantly cooling effect. The gel contains arnica (Arnica Montana) and sting-
ing nettle (Urtica urens) to reduce swelling and alleviate pain and itching fast, as well as calendula (Calendula offici-
nalis). Weleda Burns and bites Gel is also useful for the treatment of sunburn or other minor burns.
First aid for kids of all ages
Squeezed fingers, twisted ankles and tumbles can all give rise to blunt injuries. These are injuries like bruises, sprains
and pulled muscles, in which the outer skin remains undamaged. In such cases, arnica (Arnica Montana) has been
shown to help heal injured tissue. Weleda Arnica cream/ or gel has a perceptibly cooling effect, reduces swelling, inflam-
mation and alleviates pain, Just avoid applying to broken skin
Another remedy to keep with you at all times is Weleda Arnica drops 6xBut don’t worry: you won’t need to carry two first-
aid kits around with you on your next family day-out – all these natural remedies also work on fully grown explorers.
What to pack in your First-Aid kit:
- Plasters
- Two dressing pads (Woman’s sanitary pads are great!)
- Triangular bandage
- Two long bandages
- Weleda Arnica Cream
- Weleda Burns and bites Gel
- Weleda Arnica drops 6x
- Pocket knife
- Water

A Town (and Country) Cry for the Carnival Raffles
The Medieval Carnival is an incredibly special event for our Waikato Waldorf Community. It weaves the fabric of community, bringing together our families in a common project and raising needed funds for supplementing the special character of the school. Equally it showcases and introduces friends and new families to our school.
We are now seeking contributions and donations for the raffles stall!
We are aiming to have 4-5 Raffle Baskets with the following themes:
- Family Day Out (Donation examples: vouchers for activities (ie family friendly activities, cafe vouchers, ice cream vouchers swimming passes etc)
- Pamper Pack (Donation examples: natural health and beauty products, hairdresser vouchers, spa vouch-es, holistic therapies vouchers etc)
- Wholefoods Basket (Donation Examples: grocery items, healthy food and eco friendly products, vouchers for food shops like Volare, Bin Inn etc)
- House and Garden Basket (Donation examples: Vouchers for services like cleaning, house cleaning, lawn mowing, eco cleaning products, garden tools, seeds, books, Plant Shop Vouchers etc)
Be mindful that it would be best if donations are in keeping with our Steiner philosophy (ie no plastic toys, tech gadgets, junk food etc).
All sponsors will be recognised on the stall noticeboard at the Carnival, in our school newsletter and on the Me-dieval Carnival Facebook page.
If you, your family and friends or businesses that you are connected with can offer something please bring to the school office or let Holly (Class 3 mum) know via email at [email protected]
Warm thanks!

Thank you Humes (Frankton, Hamilton)
Thank you to Humes and especially Simon Milner for their very kind donation of culverts (they even
dropped them off!), which means we can clear the outdoor class area of the rubble piles before the
