Almighty God, you have built your Church upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus

Christ himself being the chief cornerstone: Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by

their teaching, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE READINGS FROM HOLY SCRIPTURE

The Lesson Read by Peter Monte Genesis 22:1-14

A reading from the Book of Genesis.

After these things God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said,

“Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there

as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that I shall show you.” So Abraham rose early in the

morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac; he cut the

wood for the burnt offering, and set out and went to the place in the distance that God had shown him.

On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place far away. Then Abraham said to his young men,

“Stay here with the donkey; the boy and I will go over there; we will worship, and then we will come

back to you.” Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac, and he himself

carried the fire and the knife. So the two of them walked on together. Isaac said to his father Abraham,

“Father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “The fire and the wood are here, but where is the

lamb for a burnt offering?” Abraham said, “God himself will provide the lamb for a burnt offering, my

son.” So the two of them walked on together. When they came to the place that God had shown him,

Abraham built an altar there and laid the wood in order. He bound his son Isaac, and laid him on the

altar, on top of the wood. Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to kill his son. But the

angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”

He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God,

since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” And Abraham looked up and saw a

ram, caught in a thicket by its horns. Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt

offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this

day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”

At the conclusion, the Reader says

The Word of the Lord.

People Thanks be to God.

The Epistle Read by Patrice Wood Romans 6:12-23

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans.

Do not let sin exercise dominion in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. No longer

present your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who

have been brought from death to life, and present your members to God as instruments of righteousness.

For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. What then?

Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if

you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of

sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that you,

having once been slaves of sin, have become obedient from the heart to the form of teaching to which

you were entrusted, and that you, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.

Page 5: The Fourth Sunday after Pentecost · 1 day ago · 3 THE WORD OF GOD The Celebrant says the opening acclamation Celebrant Blessed be God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. People And

5

I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your

members as slaves to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now present your members as

slaves to righteousness for sanctification. When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to

righteousness. So what advantage did you then get from the things of which you now are ashamed? The

end of those things is death. But now that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the

advantage you get is sanctification. The end is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift

of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

At the conclusion, the Reader says The Word of the Lord.

People Thanks be to God.

The Holy Gospel Read by the Rev. Audrey Murdock Matthew 10:40-42

At the announcement, the People respond:

Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said, “Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who

sent me. Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward; and

whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the

righteous; and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a

disciple — truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.”

At the conclusion, the Priest says

The Gospel of the Lord.

People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon The Rev. David G. Robinson, Jr., Vicar

A time of silence follows for reflection.

The Nicene Creed Book of Common Prayer, p. 358

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:

by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People Led by Gary Dozier Form III, p. 387

We begin our prayers this morning by giving thanks for our Shared Ministry, praying especially for

Christ Church’s ministry with the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen in Portsmouth, which we pray may

soon resume; and for Chip & Cindy Robinson.

Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church;

That we all may be one.

Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you;

That your Name may be glorified by all people.

We pray for Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Rob, our Bishop; Chip, our Vicar; and for all bishops,

priests, and deacons;

That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments.

We pray for Donald, our President; Chris, our Governor; and for all who govern and hold authority

in the nations of the world;

That there may be justice and peace on the earth.

Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake;

That our works may find favor in your sight.

Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble;

That they may be delivered from their distress.

Give to the departed eternal rest;

Let light perpetual shine upon them.

We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy;

May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.

Let us pray for our own needs and those of others.

During the silence, you may add your prayer concerns by means of the Zoom chat function.

Your prayers are asked for

Christ Church: Alice, Andrea, Erin, Gary, Pat, Robert & Jennifer

Trinity Church: Audrey, Ayyad, Barbara, Bob, Bruce, Charlie, Christine, Elyse & George,

Ginny, Madelyn, Mike, Noah, Robert, Rosemarie, Sally, Wes & Anne

We pray as well for the men, women, and children around our nation who have suffered oppression because of the color of their skin; for all police officers, first responders, and elected officials; and

for the church, that it will rise up and lead in this time.

The Celebrant adds this concluding Collect, authored by the Presiding Bishops of the Lutheran and Episcopal Churches

God of all power and love, we give thanks for your unfailing presence

and the hope you provide in times of uncertainty and loss.

Send your Holy Spirit to enkindle in us your holy fire.

Revive us to live as Christ’s body in the world:

a people who pray, worship, learn,

break bread, share life, heal neighbors,

bear good news, seek justice, rest and grow in the Spirit.

Wherever and however we gather,

unite us in common prayer and send us in common mission,

that we and the whole creation might be restored and renewed,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Celebrant Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Silence may be kept.

Celebrant and People

Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Priest offers the Absolution Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through the grace of Jesus Christ,

strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

A SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

Recognizing that it may be some time before we are able to physically receive Holy Communion again, we are offering

the following prayer each Sunday our in-person worship is suspended. When bid in the prayer to do so, you are invited

to hold out your hands as you would to receive the sacred Host.

Celebrant and People

O Lord Jesus Christ,

we believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament of your Body and Blood.

We love you above all things, and desire to receive you into our souls.

Since we cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into our hearts.

As we hold out our hands in longing for Communion with you,

help us to embrace you knowing that you are already here

and unite us wholly to you.

Never permit us to be separated from you.

We pray this in your holy Name. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Celebrant

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, People and Celebrant

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on

earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we

forgive those as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but

deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.

Amen.

The Blessing

The Celebrant blesses the people.

Response Amen.

~ ANNOUNCEMENTS ~

Thank you for your continued faithfulness in giving during this time in-person church services are

suspended. If your financial circumstances allow, please mail in your pledge in as timely a way as you would

were this health emergency not taking place.

Trinity Church’s website is now set up for electronic giving. Go to www.trinityhampton.org/contact.htm

and you will find, at the bottom of the page, our giving portal. You may give on a one-time or recurring

basis, with options to give weekly, monthly, quarterly, or semiannually. You will also find an option to pay

the small online fee on top of your gift, allowing the full gift to be available to the church.

Christ Church also has an online portal for giving: Go to www.christepiscopalchurch.us/contact.htm

and look for the “Donate” button near the bottom of the page. You can pay your pledge, donate to the

Discretionary Fund, or give to Little Blessings. Here, too, you are encouraged to cover the 3% online fee on

top of your gift.

There will be no regular office hours at Christ Church until the week before in-person worship resumes

(see below). The Vicar will, however, be available by appointment should the need arise, maintaining a safe

distance for your well-being.

The Shared Ministry Office in Hobbs House is technically closed, but Nita is still coming in to do those

tasks that cannot be done from home. For now, it is best to transact business by phone or email, limiting in-

person visits to such essential tasks as picking up mail or check-signing.

While the date is still not “set in stone,” it now appears our first Saturday evening service will be on

August 1. We anticipate that these Evening Prayer services will alternate between the two churches, starting

with Trinity Church on the 1st and Christ Church on the 8th. Capacity will be limited, and stringent safety

measures will be in place – but we hope these will avail our parishioners who prefer not to worship by Zoom

a venue for resuming communal worship. Sunday morning services will continue to be offered by Zoom for

the foreseeable future – even after live worship in that setting is reintroduced.

Thank you to all who responded to our survey providing input toward our reopening efforts. If you did not

receive the survey, you can respond by telephone. Fr. Chip (603-427-8720) or Nita (603-926-5688) can

receive your responses. All responses, by email, postal mail, or phone should be in our hands by this

Tuesday, June 30.

We are looking for cleaners to help us get our churches ready – In preparation for reopening our

churches to in-person worship, we are looking for a team of folks who are willing to come in a week ahead to

thoroughly clean and sanitize each location…and a team (can be the same folks, your choice) who are

willing to stay after any service to clean and sanitize in preparation for the following use of the building.

Our Reopening Task Group next meets on Tuesday, July 7. If you can respond by then to

[email protected], that would be of great help.

Our Zoom gathering on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:30 has now been designated a “recurring meeting,”

so the connection will be the same for each session. We are offering a brief Noonday office followed by a

time of conversation and connection. Here is the link to all our gatherings through the end of July:

economic circumstances, gender, sexual orientation, or religious background.

ministering to those in need and taking God’s grace and peace into the wider community.
