As if anyone else needs mentioning it … it’s that time of year again when the nation’s best basketball teams really put on a show. RIM and our many Rotarian alumni salute those competing in the NCAA, NIT, and high school hoops tournaments. May the best teams win, fair and square.

Last Week’s Program

New Ways of Cultivating

Young Leaders

by Cindy Timmerman Our very own proud mom Dawn

Johnson took a moment to introduce

her daughter Paij, right, prior to her

introduction of Adam Russell, left,

president

of the

American

Youth

Founda-

tion.

Adam then

gave our

group an

overview

of the

Michigan

Middle

School

Leadership

program

that

operates at Camp Miniwanca.

Annually, nearly 4000 kids attend

multi-day leadership and character

development programs at the camp.

Organizers of these sessions believe

that success is best achieved when the

“adults get out of the way” to allow

the kids to find their own voice and

develop programs to “change the

world”. Here, less structure and more

empowerment equal great things.

Ten middle school attendees from

10 Muskegon

County schools

have the

opportunity to

learn basic

leadership

skills and how

to be effective

in a group

during a 5-day

camp each

November.

Participants are

paired with relative strangers on day

one, but by the end of the week find

that they have formed great friendships

with future leaders throughout the

county. They are all then tasked to

change the world starting with a

project they can implement within

their own school building.

Mona Shores teachers Nicole and

Amanda introduced two young leaders

Katie and Stephan who then proceeded

to tell us of their year one project of

building a community through the use

of a blog and conversations meant to

help increase student self-esteem. The

focus for year two was a month-long

series of fundraisers where students

raised just over $4,000 to be donated

to the American Cancer Society.

Our group was then introduced to

Muskegon Middle School students

Paij and Shannon. Paij spoke of how

the MMSL program helped her

develop the confidence and skill set

necessary to work with peers and

adults and how those lessons

influenced how she presented herself

during her successful campaign to

become class president. Shannon

spoke of how his leadership group

decided to tackle the very serious

project of beautifying their school, the

former Steel Elementary, of graffiti in

the restrooms. Unfortunately the

graffiti reappeared, but these intrepid

young leaders then created a Graffiti

Wall as they understood the

importance of giving voice to all. He

further spoke of how attending this

camp helped him feel good about

himself and his community.

Each of us in that room is aware of

the need to cultivate future community

leaders. The MMLI is just one of

many wonderful leadership programs

available for us to help support within

this community. Cost to attend the

camp is $300 per student/$3,000 per

school. If you have any ideas as to

how to help this group develop

additional revenue sources please

contact Adam Russell at 231-861-2262

ext. 1111. He is also available on

Facebook.

‘Round Rotary’s RIM

Pam Babbitt again announced a

New Rotarian Get Together at Kay

and Gary Ostrom’s home on

March 28, from 4:30 to 6:30. This

is for all new Rotarians of less than

one year. Contact Pam for more

information: 231-798-2643 or

[email protected].

he conducts, above, the always

tricky pinning ceremony.
