Being able to study and live in the UK is a great opportunity for me. I will gain a good degree at a great university, learn about different cultures and nationalities, and it is also a great chance to meet new people. Life in the UK is wonderful.

I researched lots of different universities online and the University of Surrey stood out. It has a high reputation in the UK and they offered the type of degree I wanted to study. The high student satisfaction rate is definitely true and I can see why since I have been here. I feel like Surrey is my second home.

The University of Surrey vision for a 5G Innovation Centre – the world’s first research centre dedicated to mobile technology – is becoming a reality.

A consortium of key global players in telecommunications has formally joined Surrey to develop the Centre, together pledging support worth over £46 million. This group includes Aeroflex, AIRCOM International, the BBC, BT, EE, Fujitsu Laboratories of Europe, Huawei, Rohde & Schwarz, Samsung, Telefonica and Vodafone, as well as the UK’s communications regulator, Ofcom.

The pledged support (which includes time and expertise) adds to the £11.6 million already awarded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) under the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund (UKRPIF).

With preparatory building work underway, the 5G Innovation Centre is on track for completion

in January 2015, when it will become home to 150 researchers and 100 PhD students. Focusing on the advanced technologies that will underpin the 5G network, the Centre will play a crucial role in the race to provide the capacity needed to cope with ever-increasing levels of mobile communications data traffic.

“By bringing together leading academics with heavyweight industry partners, I believe we can develop the technologies required for the future. Ultimately, our vision is to provide a consistent and reliable mobile communications service and create the perception of ‘infinite capacity’,” said Professor Rahim Tafazolli, Head of Surrey’s Centre for Communication Systems Research (CCSR).

Surrey’s unique new Major/Minor degrees let you choose from over 60 subject combinations to create the perfect balance of studies for your interests and ambitions.

What distinguishes Major/Minor degrees from combined study programmes at other universities are the special anchor modules that examine how your two subjects relate to each other, giving you a third area of intellectual understanding.

These modules also provide a stimulating group setting for the exploration of ideas with your fellow Major students. Not only will you gain new perspectives from studying with people

from around the world but classes in your chosen subjects will be taken with our stand-alone degree students too. This mix of interests will add to your understanding and give further context to your studies.

And, of course, we give you the opportunity to take an invaluable Professional Training placement with one of our partner organisations in the UK or overseas.

Most importantly, you will enjoy a transformation that leaves you academically, personally and professionally prepared for an enhanced and exciting range of careers.

THE CAREERS SERVICE

With a strong and consistent record in employability, the University of Surrey knows how to prepare you for the world of work. Of those who graduated in 2013, 97% of University of Surrey graduates were in employment or further education within six months of graduating.

Highly employable graduates

Professional Training placement programmeTraining for your future

The University of Surrey Professional Training placement programme is one of the best in the world. It is also one of the largest, with over 2,300 world-leading partner organisations in the UK and overseas. These include distinguished organisations such as IBM, Sony Ericsson, HSBC, Walt Disney, Ernst & Young, British Airways and Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts.

What is a Professional Training placement?

Professional Training is a period of work experience between the 2nd or 3rd and final year of study. The placement typically lasts 30 weeks to 12 months and may be formed of one or more placements. A placement can also be paid work experience.

Placements around the world

Some students spend their placements with a UK company or organisation and others have the opportunity to go to Europe or further afield. Recent students have joined placements in New Zealand, Australia and African countries.

Supporting you every step of the wayWe’ll support you every step of the way, making sure that you understand the process and what is involved. You’ll learn how to write a stand-out CV and practice your interview technique.

Unlike other universities, we continue to support you once you start your placement, including visits from your department to answer any questions and offer guidance.

Careers ServiceThe friendly careers team offers a wide range of support, including one-to-one advice and innovative events. They will help you explore the exciting opportunities available after university and navigate the different stages of the recruitment process.

There are regular sessions to improve students’ essential skills, such as confidence and teamwork, and top employers frequently visit Surrey to give talks and offer valuable networking opportunities.

Whatever your degree or stage of study, the Careers Service is open all-year-round, with help available online as well as face-to-face.

Surrey’s careers help doesn’t end once you graduate – alumni can access the Careers Service for life, and benefit from personal appointments for two years after leaving Surrey.

The best bit about going to Surrey was being elected Student Representative (Rep) for two years in a row and nominated as Best Student Rep of the Year, making loads of friends from all over the world, learning the Japanese language as an extra university activity, building electronic prototypes of a metal detector, electronic doorbell, FM digital radio as well as going for a professional industrial placement year with Motorola Solutions. Above all, enjoying and making most of the student life at the University.

I am very happy I decided to take a placement year, as I feel it will give my CV a unique advantage. I would recommend all students do a placement year if they can.

I couldn’t have done any of this without the International Study Centre. The teaching methods encouraged me to interact with everyone in the class and gave me a chance to speak my mind. It felt more like a big family rather than just a class.

I came to the UK to study because the University of Surrey is very well known for its hospitality degrees and it’s the area I’m interested in. The University of Surrey has a lot to offer. I have a membership to the Surrey Sports Park and in my spare time I enjoy going to spinning and the gym. The facilities are state-of-the-art. I have also joined the Taiwanese Society where I have met friends from my home country.

I like living in Guildford and it is a pretty town. There is a lot to do socially, but not too many distractions from your studies. I have enjoyed my experiences so far in Guildford and at the University of Surrey and embracing new things every day.

It feels quiet and peaceful studying in Surrey, the campus provides me with a conducive environment to study in, especially the library, where there are lots of quiet areas so that I can concentrate on my studies. Also looking at the lake and the greenery grassland, I feel relief from stress.

The things I also like about campus are the Surrey shop and the union shop where they provide Asian food, and it is very convenient for me to get necessities there.

I feel proud to have a degree from the University of Surrey so that there will be a variety of job opportunities in the future.

I think the ISC is helpful as the students are divided into small classes. Teachers are able give more attention to every one of us, and help me to improve my strengths and weaknesses.

[Surrey] was really good and a nice experience. Even though it was hard... I learnt a lot from it.

When I studied with the ISC, they were really nice to me and it also helped me to know more about the whole university. The ISC really helped me in my degree and also helped me to progress to understand certain things as an economist. It really helped me prepare for university.

[The ISC] helped me be more confident in presentations, projects and coursework. Without [my teacher] I don’t know where I would have been with some of my course work. He has really helped me in my degree.

I feel so proud. It has never been easy. I know what I went through when we were doing the exams and tests and all of this. For me to graduate, it was really a happy day for me.I have to say a big thank you to all of [the staff].
