Cincinnati, League of Women Voters, 1949. 163 pp. Once again the League of Women Voters performs the important task of rounding out the equipment of local schools with an admirable text of his- tory and government to fill the gap inevitably left by standard text books which must be designed for use in cities anywhere. Such texts have to get vague when describing local govern- ment and deal in generalities and al- ternatives. This Cincinnati text relates the history of Cincinnati in good nar- rative with ample consideration of the succession of industry and changing conditions which constitute its eco- nomic history. Finally, it describes past and current city government features-Cincinnati's proportional representation elections, city planning, housing and other major problemswith careful completeness, making appropriate reading not only for school children but for their parents. If the schools steadily make full use of the text so that all children of Cin- cinnati will go through it in their turns, it will constitute a massive con- tribution to civic education in that R. S.
