PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Happy campers Excited and energized Year 7 students and their teachers, led by Rosie Westland, ventured to Tea Gardens last week for the annual camp to orient students to their year group and allow them to complete team building and challenge exercises. Swimming Carnival Another successful carnival was held, this year at a new location at Parramatta, affording the school appropriate space to accommodate expanding student numbers. Later in the bulletin there is a comprehensive overview of successful swimmers and their zone and regional commitments as a result. Congratulations to all.

Boys mentoring I have spoken on a number of occasions now about a special program we have implemented in 2010 which focuses on improving boys’ results at the Higher School Certificate. Mr Peter Kerrigan is coordinating this boys’ mentoring project. He is passionate about its objectives and possibilities – and so are the students and their parents. Amongst other things, the program will assist the 29 targeted Year 12 boys to:

Set goals Persevere Aim higher Organise themselves and their learning Plan continuous study – and carry it out Practise, practise, practise Seek assistance at all times from teachers

We are determined that this program will make a difference. The Year 12 Half Yearly is coming up, so this will be the first opportunity to see if the initial phase of the program is having impact. We are quietly confident. Open Day Some very enthusiastic Year 6 students had their first taste of high school on February 22 and 23 at our annual Open Day. It was great to see our Year 11 students guiding them, answering questions, assisting in problem solving and generally welcoming them to this fine school. It was a treat to see wide-eyed and excited young people keen to explore and learn. Year 12 Parent/Teacher Night On the evening of March 2 there will be a parent teacher evening from 4pm to 7pm for parents of Year 12 students. This will be an opportunity for us to discuss any issues and seek solutions in assisting students in the Higher School Certificate year, a difficult and challenging one by any standard. I look forward to meeting you again on the evening. Vicki Brewer

WHAT MATTERS COMPETITION

It’s time to write for the 2010 ‘What Matters’ competition presented by the Whitlam Institute. Specific criteria for the competition, as well as details of how to enter, can be obtained from your English teacher. Some classes may be also doing this as a class project. The basic concept of the competition is that NSW students from Years 5-12 are given the opportunity to say what matters to them in society to-day. L. O’Sullivan English Staff

COMMERCE – A SOCIAL CONTRIBUTION In Term 4 2009, a number of Year 9 Commerce students were involved in running their Own Business. They invested their own money, purchased material and made a variety of items for consumption by the students and teachers of Castle Hill High. Over four Friday Lunch times items were purchased in the quadrangle and as a consequence and because of the school support, this Commerce class not only obtained their initial investment but also made a substantial profit. The profit of over $270.00 was donated to charity. The charity chosen was The Scleroderma Association of NSW. This Association is involved in funding research for the cure of Scleroderma. This little known fatal disease affects many thousands of people in Australia, of which 70% are mostly women. It begins with the hardening of the skin and then the hardening of the internal organs leading to death. It affects all ages and at present there is no known cure, thus the money needed for research. The Scleroderma Association sent us a letter which in part stated “The Year 9 Commerce students are to be sincerely congratulated and we extend our thanks to the students of Castle Hill High for their appreciated support and donation”. In appreciation they gave each participating student a badge which was presented to them at a full school assembly. The following students are to be congratulated. Chess Awards In the Spring /Summer period of 2009 a number of students played in the School Chess competition. The battle went over Terms Three and Four and after many Friday lunch times of playing, five students achieved results that enabled them to compete in the finals. What has been noted over the year is that many players have grown in self–confidence as they gained a sense of personal success. Through interacting with a variety of other students from different ages there has grown a respect for each other. These same students have a better understanding of developing alternative solutions as they learnt through their chess moves that a specific action creates a reaction. Thus through their play they have learnt to stop, think, look at other possibilities and then make their move. The five competitors who had a good chance of winning included Junwoo Cheon, Brayden Griffiths, Jack Ray, Edward Shen and Jesse Xu. From these, the following were to obtain the top three positions. Bronze Medal Junwoo Cheon Silver Medal Jack Ray Gold Medal Jesse XU Congratulations to all competitors and winners. Chess is played at Friday Lunch times in A12. All are welcome to attend. D. Singer

WHITE-WATER RAFTING

Each year we like to take those students who have represented Castle Hill High School so proudly in sport, on an excursion. Every time a student represents our school, they can get a slip of paper from the PE staffroom and record their points. At the end of the year, we will take the top fifty students to somewhere like White-water Rafting. This is a report from Isabelle Lynn and Bronte Simpson. On Friday 13 December, a group of selected sport students from Years 7-12 visited Penrith White-water Rafting Centre. White-water rafting is very challenging and requires a lot of teamwork. We were in a raft with Gabby, April, Brooke, Ben and Mr Kerrigan. Before we got into the rafts, we had a safety lesson. We wore helmets and life jackets and each of us had a paddle. Once we got into the rafts, we went up the raft elevator and before we knew it we were smashing down into the wild waters. After a few laps we were really excited to do more laps, and of course Isabelle was the first one to fall in & then Bronte who really freaked and screamed for Mr Kerrigan, who was the next to fall in. Bronte and Mr Kerrigan went down half the course out of the raft. After we recovered from falling out of the raft, we then had to dive into the crashing, rough water to get back into the raft. The next few laps we went harder and faster down the course. Mr Kerrigan fell in once again and we tried to pull him in, but failed. On behalf of everyone that went to Penrith, we would like to say a huge thanks to Mr Kerrigan who put this together and Mr Tudman and Mr Watson for coming along with us. Also thank you to the kind staff for keeping us safe in the rafts.
