Fri., Dec. 6: Chorus Song NightAn evening of communal singing. The once common, but now rare experience of singing together with others is kept alive in this annual event at the Troubadour. Songs with choruses. Familiar songs. Songs whose structure telegraphs or implies the lyrics. If you like to sing with the radio, it’s even more fun when you sing with a real person in a room full of others who like to sing. Songs will be led by the following.

Bob Dupre: Wonderful a capella singer of sea songs, pub songs, etc.

Olga (Olguita) Alvarez: A respected professional vocalist in Puerto Rico where she grew up, Olga has become a fixture in the Folk Project community, and sings in Spanish as well as English.

Ken & Pat Rolston: Well known for their harmonies, the Rolstons’ repertoire runs the gamut from traditional ballads to doo-wop.

Mike Agranoff: Program Chairman of the Troubadour, Mike is a well-known song leader at festivals and song circles around the country.

Fri., Dec. 13: OpenStage (admission: $10 general, $5 age 21 or under, OpenStage only)The Folk Project OpenStage is the place where a diverse collection of acoustic musicians performs for a welcom-ing, supportive, and attentive audience. We’re a listening room, not a noisy bar. We’ve often seen previews of our regularly scheduled opening acts for the first time at our OpenStage. Visit www.OpenStage.FolkProject.org for information on how to sign up to perform at our next OpenStage.

Fri., Dec. 20: Special Event—A Holiday Benefit ConcertFor the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, suggested donation $15Join The Folk Project in celebrating the Seasonal Holidays. Come on by around 7pm to sing some favorite holiday carols with Andrew Dunn. The concert starts at 7:30pm featuring The Kitchen Girls (Rachel Streich, Katie Weiss, Jill Lagerstrom), Martin Swinger, The Mother Pluckers (Beth Bachmann, Tracy Roskam, Jennifer Bross), The One Uke Wonders (Beth Bachmann, Kevin Coughlin, Danny Vento, Mike Sagurton, Bob Kammer), Dennis Mc DoNoUgh!, The Poorhouse Pickers (Bob Cole, Marvin Perkins, FiL Wisneski), and Chrissy Roberts. With our favorite Holiday elf emceeing, Bob McNally.

Fri., Dec. 27: Gathering Time with Terry Kitchen & Mara LevineIt’s 4-1/2 years since Gathering Time last graced our stage. This vocal har-mony-based trio from Long Island, NY has become a local favorite here in the Northeast. They put together an exciting program of songs from their own pens, those of their contemporaries in the acoustic singer-songwriter genre, and some classics from the ‘60s. Stuart Markus, Hillary Foxsong, and Gerry McKeveny have voices that blend exquisitely.

Boston-based but New Jersey-born, Terry Kitchen has been performing on the folk scene for the past decade. He was called “one of New England’s finest songwriters” by Dirty Linen magazine, Terry’s songs are portraits of ordinary

people, captured with compassion, honesty, and humor. Terry has joined up with the Folk Project’s own Mara Levine, whose vocal harmonies (and sometimes leads) add a whole new level of enjoyment to his songs.

Valentine’s Day Extravaganza!Fri., Feb. 7, 7:30pm, $12 Admission

Get ready to throb some hearts on Friday, Feb. 7, at the Valentine’s Day Extravaganza, a Folk Project Member Show. This is a great opportunity to perform a love-themed song in front of a love-crazed & adoring audience. You can elect to perform your piece with our terrific jazz ensemble, Frank Sole and Todd Dennison, or with the fabulous Folk Project Lovin’ Hearts Big Boogie Band, or you can go solo and/or have some friends accompany you.

This is a very popular FP fundraising event, and we enhance the pleasures of the heart and stomach with special politically-correct snacks and car-diac-friendly non-GMO sweets!

Performance slots are limited. Sign-ups CLOSE on January 2, 2020. Email [email protected] with your song along with its key. Music files in the MP3 format or web links are welcome.

If you would like to perform with The Folk Project Lovin’ Hearts Boogie Band, a mandatory rehearsal will be held on Sat. Feb 1 at the acoustically-perfect home of Mark and Robin Schaffer. Rehearsal is not the time to

try out a new tune. All singers must know their songs and provide the key when submitting their song for consideration.

Practice with the Jazz Duo will be on Sun. Feb 2 at Frank Sole’s House of Harmony. Jazz Duo Songs—preferably from the Great American Songbook (think Frank Sinatra/Ella Fitzgerald)—must be approved by the band leader since rehearsal time is limited to 20 minutes per song. (We know you are dying to do a Mahavishnu Orchestra song…but please, not this time!)

So, retire to your “Love Shack,” get your song ready and be ready to share the love on Friday, February 7, 2020! —Chris Bukata, Event Coordinator

Most recently, our fellow Member Jim West passed away on November 1st. Jim was a longtime member and past President of the Folk Project and was a champion fiddler, songwriter, and per-former. He had many friends within the New Jersey and New York folk music communities and in the St. Mark Methodist Church and other churches and community organizations, where he par-ticipated in musical activities and services. Jim is survived by his loving wife Judy Bubar and his step-daughters Akire and Inga Bubar.

Doug Heacock reported that Jim O’Brien, his former partner and long-time friend, passed away on 8/6/19. Jim was a very active Folk Project member, well-liked by many other members. Doug shares that Jim had helped him to find his current house and to make it into a real home.

Steve Wexler’s family reported he passed away, very unexpectedly, on 8/22/19. Steve and his wife Leslie were newer Folk Project members and very enthusiastic participants in many Folk Project activities. Steve was a musician, and also very involved in many other community-service activi-ties. Steve’s family knew how passionate he was about the Folk Project and had suggested that Donations be made to the Folk Project in Steve’s memory and honor. Many donations have been made in remembrance of Steve.

Cathy Ballard and Bill Cox reported the sudden, unexpected passing of their son David Cox on 8/11/19. David has been a Folk Project member almost his entire life, attending Folk Project events with his parents since he was a young child. He was an artist and nature-lover. He enjoyed spending time with his family, including his young Niece and Nephew. Cathy and Bill have written a Thank You note to The Folk Project following David’s death, as follows: “Dear Folks - Our hearts are touched by your kindness. The presence of so many Folk Project members as we grieved. As well as gifts of food and hugs and being a safe place to come on a Friday evening. Thanks so much. Bill and Cathy.”

Due to circumstances beyond our control, the Minutes of the November board meeting are not available at the time of publication. They will be posted to the Folk Project website at tinyurl.com/FP-minutes when they become available..

The next board meeting will be the Annual Meeting on Tue., Dec. 3, 2019, held at the Chimney Rock Inn in Gillette. See page 1 for details.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, the Good of the Order is not available at the time of publication. Hopefully, it will be combined with the December Good of the Order reported in the January newsletter.

Proposed 2020 NominatonsThe Annual Meeting of the Folk Project will take place on December 3, (see page 1), where the new directors of the organization will be elected. Here is the slate proposed by the Nominations Committee.

The Princeton Folk Music Society presents

Tony Trischka’s “Of A Winter’s Night”Special Holiday Concert on December 13, 2019

“Of A Winter’s Night” is Tony Trischka’s banjo-driven celebration of the season where he turns his considerable melodic inventiveness loose on Bluegrass and Americana music for the holidays. Tony is joined by shape-note singer and multi-instrumentalist Tim Eriksen, vocalist and fiddle player Phoebe Hunt, Dominic Leslie on mandolin, and Larry Cook on bass and vocals. A diverse, highly textural seasonal collection, Trischka also revels in songs long forgotten and little known. Truly a sumptuous feast for the ears presented as only Tony Trischka can. A “celebration of Americana, sometimes lively, sometimes stately,” (Washington Post)

This is a specially priced holiday concert with tickets SOLD ONLY ONLINE IN ADVANCE. All tickets are $35. Order and reserve your tickets now at www.princetonfolk.org. Scroll down to the Tony Trischka concert info and order using the online ticket order link.

Any problems with ordering tickets or questions, please contact us at [email protected].

No pay involved, but a nice free snack table, and the opportunity to see and meet many other performers at this monthly event, who are all absolutely outstanding.
