Lose Your Luggage for Lent
Have you ever stood at an airport baggage carousel, waiting for your luggage but it doesn’t come out? You stand there and watch the few remaining bags circling, as if your bag is going to magically materialize. The airline has lost your luggage. They usually find your bag and try to get it to you, but some pieces of luggage are sent here and there and never end up where they belong.
Ash Wednesday is on February 18 and it begins this year’s journey through Lent. We should all make a conscious effort to “lose our luggage” for Lent! How many suitcases of grudges are you packing around? We shouldn’t take old grudges and unforgiven acts with us into Easter. Easter is the time when God’s son died so we could be forgiven. How ironic that we refuse to forgive one another.
We have the capacity for forgiveness because God forgives us. We acknowledge God’s forgiveness of us and extend this divine gift of forgiveness to others as part of an act of worship to God. By forgiving others, we offer genuine worship to God.
It is hard for us to let go of our well-worn bags of resentments and old hurts. Each of us has names and faces that we simply cannot imagine being able to forgive. Christ calls us to forgive. We respond that we would prefer to get even.
Paul offers some advice that we must hear as we find ourselves busily packing away plans for revenge or plotting ways to get even. “Whatever you do, do in the name of the Lord Jesus.” Can you carry around anger against someone who said or did something to you “in the name of Jesus?” Can you assassinate the character and integrity of a person “in the name of Jesus?”
Paul insists that, “as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.” Those words sound familiar. We say something very close to them each Sunday when we pray the Lord’s Prayer. Say it with me, “Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.” And say it yet again…
“Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.”

FELLOWSHIP HOUR MINISTRY AFTER CHURCH
SERVICE
Please consider serving your fellow worshippers by hosting the fellowship hour. A quarterly list of Sundays is
available at the Opportunity Center for sign-ups. The beverages will be handled by others. Paper supplies and assorted snacks are stocked in the cake room cupboard. If you wish to contribute something from your own kitchen, the choice is yours. We recommend working with a partner. There are times when a cake or other special refreshments are appropriate and appreciated. Jan Poush or Georgia Grovesteen are happy to work with you. Let's resolve to simplify our efforts so that we can all truly enjoy this time of fellowship.

SPECIAL SPAGHETTI DINNER
The Blessings in a Backpack program will receive 100% of all ticket sales from the spaghetti dinner on Friday, February 6th at GSUMC. The time frame for this dinner is extended and will be from 4:30 to 7:30pm.
This will be the third year that we’ve held a fund raiser for this program, which GSUMC began here in our area after a challenge from our District Superintendent Melanie Carey. You may recall that she offered $1000 to churches in her district and the only stipulation was not to use it for church expenses. She wanted some imagination used to make it ‘work’ in our community. In a very short time the Blessings in a Backpack program in Dearborn grew from GSUMC and about 25 kids at DuVall to now serving 5 schools and partnering with several other local churches in Dearborn plus Meijer and Panera Cares.
The premise of this program is that kids who qualify for partial or full pay breakfast and lunch at school during the week may also need help with food on the weekends. So every week backpacks are packed with a variety of items and distributed to them. Not all kids who qualify accept the backpacks, which is a parental decision.
This will be the same spaghetti dinner as any of our other dinners in that the menu is the same and all of the preparation is the same. But there is more food to prepare and serve, more dishes to wash. The added hour and more guests being expected means more hands are needed to help in every area.
PLEASE add your name to a space on the worker sheet at the Opportunity Center. None of the help opportunities are difficult. It is understood that many can’t be there early to begin the dinner nor for prep prior to it. However, it would be very beneficial and appreciated that those who cannot arrive until later during the event step up and take over the last hour from the folks who started at 4:30.
SAVE THE DATE A seven-week Lenten study starts February 18, 5:30 to 6:30 pm. Explore Jesus’ “I Am” sayings and how they connect to your life.

UMCOR – THE ADVANCE
Dear Friends in Mission:
Thank for your gift received on 12/31/2014 of $2,400.00 to the Imagine No Malaria campaign through The
Advance, the designated mission giving channel of The United Methodist Church. We are pleased to share that 100% of your contribution will go towards eliminating one of the world’s most deadly diseases. Giving through The Advance enables United Methodists to support one another in mission and ministry around the world. Thank you for partnering with us in God’s mission.
Through gifts like yours, Imagine NO Malaria has already distributed 1.2 million insecticide-treated bed nets throughout Africa. We have also trained more than 5,400 community health workers to personally deliver mosquito nets and measure usage rates. Today, because of the dedicated and generous support of people like you, malaria’s impact has been cut in half!
Your gift supports the work of the United Methodist Church and our many partners including The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; The United Nations Foundation; the international Federation of the Red Crescent and Red Cross Societies; Nets for Life©; and United Methodist central conferences across Africa.
Please visit www.imaginenomalaria.org to learn more about how your support is making an impact with a full range of interventions to combat malaria.
May God grant you a sense of hope and joy as your continue your support for mission and as we advance towards a day with no malaria.
Grace and Peace,
Roland Fernandes, General Treasurer UMCOR, General Board of Global Ministries
Shawn Bakker, Deputy General Secretary Communications and Development
~~~~~~ SPECIAL THANKS to Pastor Doug and our church family for prayers, calls, cards and visits during my bout and recovery from pneumonia. What precious family you are! My love and God’s special blessings to each of you. Delores Lebeck
~~~~~~~ THANK YOU to Joe O'Brien for all his work repairing and painting our pew candle holders this past holiday season. They looked so nice and for the first time in several years the candles stayed upright!! Your work was much appreciated.
CHRIS HILLIER'S EXCELLENT HIKING ADVENTURES
Please join the LOGOS club on Thursday, February 12th as Chris Hillier shares his hiking adventures with us. Chris is a member of the Good Shepherd family--you may know him by his hiking name, "Wolverine." We have followed his recent hikes, particularly in 2014, when he walked from Mexico to Canada. Come early and have a dessert with us at 6 in the fellowship hall, just before Chris begins. The talk should last 30-45 minutes. Please sign up at the opportunity center.
PLEASE CONTINUE TO SAVE!!
Please continue to save PLASTIC caps and lids for the ongoing LOGOS project. We particularly are in need of smaller caps in any color and shape. As examples, milk bottle caps
and pop bottle caps come in many colors and work very well. We also need the very small ones from things like tooth paste, chap stick and so on, again in any color.
My suggestion is to have a zip lock or something similar and collect them after you have washed them off, then periodically bring them into the Opportunity Center. A black bin can be found in the unit at the window side of the Opportunity Center for you to put them into.
Please continue to save them and bring them in until further notice. Thanks!!
