Well it is time to really say “thanks” to all that are due. I really wish I had more space here, but I will start by saying the real mean-ing behind the holiday of Thanksgiving is to show thanks. As a society we go all out to see who is having the Thanksgiving dinner, however, we often forget the things we are to truly be thankful for. Family and friends are great, but there is another group of folks that should get their just due. Often overlooked because it is the same month as Turkey day, I want to take this time to send a very special thanks to the men and women of the Armed Forces past and present. We label this group as “veterans.” The ones that put their lives on the line and some that even paid the ultimate price to protect our freedoms here stateside. Enjoy your day and know your brother appreciates you.We also say thanks to an organization, the Roanoke Throwbacks, who have for 6 years now put on an alumni game between the rival high schools of the Star City. This group has provided appreciation for the past all while

taking responsibility of the future.Thank you, the readers for your continued support and #StayFocusedMyFriends

The beauty of the Holiday season always brings about the spirit of

Thanksgiving.

We give thanks for the gifts we have received, whether they be tangible or intangible. If we look deeper into the context of what thanksgiving re-ally means, I believe the existence of our lives and the lives of others will be affected in a profound way.

To be thankful requires a certain pos-ture. In order for us to experience sincere thanksgiving, we must be in a place of humility, understanding that what we receive, is not manda-tory, but rather optional. In addition, humility allows us to look beyond the gift and see the heart of where the true gift is conceived. Secondly, we must be in a position of openness to receive. Many times our ability to receive reflects our self-worth. If we feel that we are not worthy of the gift, we will not accept it, forfeiting all the blessings of that gift, as well as offending the giver. And lastly, we must be in a position of gratitude. Truly understanding that is an honor to be considered the recipient of the gift, and therefore showing our deepest appreciation.

How do we show that we are truly thankful? Well, the first way is by utilizing the gift we are given. If we are given a gift and never use it, then it is a clear indication to the giver that we are not thankful for the gift itself. It may also reveal that we don’t value the gift. This could be out of ignorance, not knowing the full extent of what that gift contains,

or the price (not always monetary), that was paid for that gift to be made available to us. And finally, an almost instinctive display of thankfulness is praise. This not only shows the giver you are appreciative, but it makes the giver feel good, allowing them to be a part of the thanksgiving process.

Understanding what it means to experience thanksgiving in totality demonstrates a way of life that we should all strive to live. Can you imagine a world where everyone op-erates out of thanksgiving? Can you imagine the amount of gifts that will be exchanged and utilized on a daily basis, and the impact that it would have on how we view ourselves and others around us? Just imagine the countless number of lives that will continually be affected in a positive way.

Beginning with this season, take time to delve deeper into the “gifts” that you have been given, and exam-ine your responses. Just another thought, why is it better to give than to receive? Do you see how this exchange is reciprocal? “For with the same measure that you give, it shall be given unto you”

Imagine one day you are playing sports in college when you realize your “life situation” has changed and you need to make money now! That was how I became a United States Navy Sailor June 23, 1993.

There are many reasons why people join the Armed Forces, but one thing that remains true is that once you “raise your right hand” and get sworn in, you are now a part of the protectors of the free world. That’s not something that anyone should take lightly. It takes a lot of dedica-tion, planning, discipline, and forti-tude to handle the rigors that come with being a service-member.

Yes the pay is good, however, what other job do you get paid a 40 hour work week salary, but you are on the clock 24 hours a day. When you really break that down, you realize the pay isn’t the incentive at all. It’s the fact that you belong to some-thing that is bigger than you and your selfless act allows for those who have no idea of what is going on the other side of the “pond” (it’s no pond at all, we are talking the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans here).

Because Veterans have paid their dues, it is important to show grat-itude. It’s nice that restaurants and other company’s have special discounts for veterans on Veteran’s Day. It is nice that people take the time to acknowledge family mem-bers and friends who have served in the military on this day. It is nice for those veterans to be able to en-joy making it through, because for a percentage of the people that join, it isn’t the case.

My father, SP4 John Russo Page, United States Army is one of those veterans that I speak of. Active in the Vietnam War, he was injured in battle and contracted spinal men-ingitis which ultimately claimed his life 16 years later. He was fortunate that he was able to at least make it back to enjoy life the best way he could. He was no longer the same young man that joined the Army when he came home. After spend-ing 6 months in a coma from this disease, he wasn’t expected to live. The Surgeon General himself said that it was a miracle that he even woke up. He did wake up and he fought all the way until the end like a real soldier does.

There are many that have simi-lar stories from “wartime.” There will be more. So as you take time complaining about how bad it is in America, realize this; it could be a lot worse! One of the main reasons that it is not is because brave young men and women commit their life to the cause. So this year instead of getting upset about veterans getting free meals at Apple Bee’s, take the time to say “Thanks” for “Giving” us a chance to live the dream of being an American.

I proudly served my country for 14 years. I was in and out of 2 wars and various other conflicts that had my life in jeopardy many times. Al-though I had other plans for my life initially, I’m glad I made the choice to enlist and would gladly do it all over again!

Preparing for the holidays can be fun and exciting, especially your annual holiday party at your workplace. We all want to focus on looking our best and we must dress for

each occasion exquisitely.

Holiday parties are where we get to show our co-workers what we look like in our after five or black tie attire. This

is always interesting to see because your co-workers are excited to see what you may look like outside of your work clothes. This gives everyone a chance to step it up a notch when it

comes to fashion.

For ladies, you should choose a nice gown that is long or a cocktail dress that is knee length. Shoes should not be higher than 3 inches and should accent your gown or dress. You can

always go with silver, gold, or even black shoes. The shoes do not have to be the exact same color of the dress. There are always ways to pull in a color with accessories. Whatever you choose, make sure it is classy and not too flashy. This means not too much skin showing, not too tight, not too much bling, or sequins. For your make-up ladies, use a light or sheer mineral powder foundation for coverage and to even out skin tone. Accent your eyes with a few luminous light-dark cream eyeshadow colors, that bring out the color of your eyes,

dress or gown. Choose an eyeliner that accents the shape of your eyes and mascara that adds length and volume to your lashes. Make sure your lips are moisturized with a satin lip balm

before applying your lipstick. You can also use a lip liner to ensure longer lasting lipstick and fullness. Apply a glistening gloss with glitter and shimmer on top of your lipstick for extra

protection and luscious shine.

Gentleman choose a nice tuxedo with a cumberbum, a tie, and or vest. Colors for these needed accessories could accent your dates attire or remain neutral and not too bright. Shoes should be a nice black or brown dress shoe that tie up or a nice ankle boot. A nice suit with a collared shirt and tie with a sports jacket will be fashionable also. Stay away from sweaters, khakis, polos, and or crew neck t-shirts, and sneakers or work boots. For these work related holiday events you want to make sure you are still conservative and professional, without

sending the wrong message through your attire amongst your co-workers.

Remember ladies and gentleman you still have to work with these people in a professional environment and you need to hold up a standard. Following these simple tips will allow

you to feel confident and look great at this year’s holiday party.

Stay focused with your fashionable holiday attire!

The Roanoke Throwback Orga-nization is a group comprised of Alumni Classes from various years out of the Roanoke City School Sys-tem. Their mission is to raise mon-ey in order to present scholarships to young people interested in pur-suing their post secondary educa-tion. Funds are raised through the primary fundraiser, an annual bas-ketball tournament as well as other events hosted throughout the com-munity.

The Basketball Tournament also known as the Throwback Games are held on the weekend after Thanks-giving. An ideal time for family and friends from near and far to come together as one in an effort to sup-port the youth. This year’s event was a tremendous success. Both Patrick Henry and William Fleming High Schools were well represented in the men’s and women’s games.

Ms. Tiara Johnson, a Westside Ele-mentary student opened the games by singing the Star Spangled Ban-ner. To her surprise, she was then awarded a One Thousand Dollar Future Scholarship. Supporters of the event included Delegate Sam Rasoul and founders of Twin Hoops Summer Camp, Ramon and Damon Williams. Music and entertainment

were provided by Focused Radio with a special appearance by Star Citi.
