OCTOBER 2008 THE FL YC TELLTAL E
Well, I think the sailing
season on the lake is pretty much over for this year. We tried to get in Fall #1, thanks
to the efforts of Bob Backer and George Koch who vol-unteered and were on sta-
tion as RC, but there was little wind and even fewer participants. With the low
water and no launch ramp to speak of, I think we should „call it a day‟ and postpone the remaining events (Fall
Series, Eavenson Regatta, and Joe Beek Club Championship) until next year. The one remaining event is the annual awards dinner and election of new officers, which is always a
fun get together (more in the Telltale), that I hope everyone will attend.
However, we were able to run the „All Dinghy Regatta‟ at Lake Rancho Seco on September 20th. The conditions; good wind, plenty of water, launch ramp with close parking,
and good participation - including several boats from the Lake Washington Sailing Club, made for a fun time. The competition was high, with several boats called for being
over early in a couple of the races and the lead changed on several legs of more than one race. We had two divisions and got in five quick races, and everyone was happy they
came. Also particularly happy was Charles Witcher, who won the Banshee Pacific Coast Championship and was awarded the „Keith Steele Cup‟ perpetual trophy for, I think,
the fifth time. Congratulations again Charles! Although the conditions were good on Saturday one day was enough for everyone, so we cancelled Sunday‟s activities.
Speaking of good sailors, I‟d also like to mention an-other exceptional FLYC sailor, Dwight Odom. He recently sailed in his third single-handed „TRANSPAC‟ finishing
fourth in class on his Saga 43. Interestingly, if you Google „Saga 43‟, one of the links goes to a detailed boat review and
talks about a S.F. Bay test sail on Dwight Odom‟s new boat.
Actually finishing fourth is pretty good, because that‟s after he returned to San Francisco twice for electrical problems. As Skip Allan pointed out, “He [Dwight] also had the unique
experience of passing the Farallones five times in one race!” There‟s an article about the race with a picture of Dwight and family in Hawaii in the September issue of Latitude 38.
I‟m also pleased to announce that after the nominating committee (Sherron Hart, Kerry Johnson, and Mel Morri-
son) met on September 11th, the following individuals have agreed to run for office:
Commodore Naim Shah
Vice Commodore Mike Gillum Rear Commodore Kerry Johnson Staff Commodore Steve Galeria (per Bylaws)
Secretary Lanette Strain (continuing) Treasurer Scott Fredrickson Director-at-Large (open)
Director-at-Large (open)
Each person has a wealth of experience in sailing and club
management. They have also expressed their commitment to the goals/purpose of the club and are looking forward to helping the club grow and improve. So, please join us at the
awards dinner November 15th to show your support and vote for the new directors and club officers.
The October 14th member‟s meeting will again be at the Amore Café, 2220 Gold Spring Court, Gold River, a few doors down from Chevy‟s just off Sunrise Blvd. The fea-
tured presentation will be given by Jason Jenkins on charter-ing / cruising in the British Virgin Islands in 2009. Jason has been organizing a group sail this past year and encourages
anyone interested in join the group or just learning about cruising in BVI to come to the meeting. Hope to see you there.

Duffy Langford‟s departure from Calais began unevent-
fully, Dwight Odom reported this past month. Dwight was assigned radio watch to track Duffy‟s progress sailing his much bigger Megabyte back to Folsom Lake and Dwight said
he spoke with Duffy after he had crossed the English Chan-nel, which the French call La Manche (the sleeve).
It seems Duffy was maneuvering his much larger Mega-byte out of Calais, under the critical eye of local yacht club members who had assembled to watch the American con-
tinue his around-the-world sail. As Duffy executed a gybe at the harbor entrance, a strong gust knocked down the Mega-byte. Duffy turned to swim back to his Megabyte, but was distracted by the sailors ashore who shouted excitedly,
“charcuter! charcuter!” (to butcher) while pointing at Duffy. It was their way of saying he‟d butchered that gybe, but their shouts sounded more like they were yelling,
“Shark! Shark!” Over his shoulder, Duffy glimpsed a massive fin ap-
proaching and paddled frantically to escape the shark. It turned out he‟d only seen the Megabyte‟s sail out of the corner of his eye, but to Duffy, this was no time to
stop. So, he swam and swam, looking back every so often
to see it hadn‟t left. Six hours, 51 minutes and 49 seconds
after leaving Calais, Duffy touched shore in Dover, a second faster than it took Petar Stoychev to swim the channel in 2007. And, Duffy did that while towing a Megabyte whose
main sheet had become entangled in his belt! Unfortunately, the Channel Swimming Association refused
to recognize Duffy‟s accomplishment as an official record, claiming he‟d not followed CSA guidelines. Still, the London Daily Mail plastered a photo of a half-naked Duffy on its
cover as the headline blared, “Frogs Scare Yank into Record Channel Swim.” That seemed to be enough reward as, despite not being
rewarded the official record, Duffy was feted at successive yacht clubs along the coast. Dwight says Duffy is now in Sir Francis Drake‟s hometown of Plymouth and during the past
few weeks since his channel caper has become a celebrity of sorts, photographed entering clubs and variously described in the gutter press as being considered as a striker for the
Manchester club, coming between a starlet and her lesbian lover and having fathered an alien baby.

left are from 2007 and the two on the right are from 2008. It’s inter-
esting that Folsom is lower in
2008 but Florence Lake was
higher in 2008. It’s a gorgeous
area if you have time / desire to
travel the one lane road over Kai-
ser Pass (greater than 9,000 foot
elevation).
