BLACKSMITHING SCHOOL:

Fred Caylor has scheduled another school for Florida at Walt Anderson's shop near Ocala. The dates are March 8-14. Those wishing to participate should contact Fred directly. His address in in our membership list.

FROM PRESIDENT WILLARD:

The year of 86 *#as a good year for us as an organization. We had wonderful meetings each month with good demonstrators in which each of us came away with a little more knowledge.

In March and October of 86, we were priviledged to have Fred Caylor from Zionsville, Indiana come to Florida and hold classes for a week in each of those months. It looks like he will be doing it again this year.

~he'conference in October was a success with the two-day meeting. We are planning for the second one this October. We learned a lot in planning one after doing our first. Hopefully we will get some of the bugs out.

Speaking of conferences, this May, we will be involved in the Southeastern Regional Blacksmith Conference in Madison, Ga. This is where we organized two years ago this coming May. With just a hand full of people! We are now a group of 90+ members. Let's try to make it 100 members by May and all go to Madison. You will come back home a changed person if it is your first time attending.

Looking forward to seeing each of you at our State Meeting.

JANUARY MEETING REPORTS

Northeast Region - We had a good meeting at Alva Hebert's in Orange Park on 1/10/87. Eleven members & wives and one guest enjoyed Alva's nice shop. Fred Caylor & Margie were there. Fred brought a hammer down for John Cross and said he would pick up a trailer Willard Smith made for him on the way back. Our sponsored youth, Billy Mango, rode up with Jimmy Corbet and it wasgood to see him again. He said he had been doing some smithing at his school with a forge Alva gave him and with the tools he received at our October meeting. Billy and Walt ANderson and guest John Wall made brass ladles and Billy & Jimmy Corbet made the handles while Doug Rochon made meat forks. All these items are for the Kitchen of the Pioneer Settlement at Barberville. Fred Caylor talked about hinge finials and demonstrated making a rooster finial.

Our region coordinator Doug Rochon, called a short business meeting. It was decided our region would meet every first Saturday. February and March meetings will be at the Pioneer Settlement at Barberville and April will be at John Cross's in Bryceville.

, Southeast Region - no report. They met at Steve Rush's in Ft. Lauderdale.

Southwest Region - no report. They met at Jimmy Tucker's in Sarasota.

PLEASE!!! We need the reports before our deadline. Send to Walt as soon as possible. Deadline for receiving articles each month is the 15th. This gives us time to get our newsletter out by the 25th of each month. PLEASE!! We need all the support. If you meet after our deadline date, send in for the next newsletter. We must have meeting sites and directions ahead of time!! 1 Northwest Region - Our meeting was held at Buddy Page's shop in Wakulla County. Buddy demonstrated making squaw axes and talked about different types of tomahawks, axe, etc. He made a trivet and several other items. We were represented by seven members and one guest. Buddy has a nice working blacksmith shop, a good set-up for one man. Blacksmithing is his main profession. He does a lot of civil war and re-enactment items. He participates in shows throughout the Southeastern area. We appreciate him taking time off from his busy scheduling of shows to demonstrate his expertise in blacksmithing. He will be the blacksmitth during the State Fair in Tampa for those that would like to see his work.

FEBRUARY MEETINGS:

In addition to a Statewide. meeting in Sarsota, the Northeast Region will be meeting Saturday, Feb. 7, 1987 at the Pioneer Settle- ment in Barberville to make items and plan a new blacksmith shop for their facility. Many tools have been promised to equip a fine new shop here.
