The English-speaking news magazine in Florence

Feeling bookish? In tribute to all those who participated in the short story contest launched by The Florentine and The Sigh Press last month, we’re throwing a literary fest. Join us for a reading of the racconti at Todo Modo, an independent bookshop just around the corner from The Florentine’s office. Raise a glass to the winners with an aperitivo (12 euro) of food and wine from the finest regional producers. For more information, write to [email protected].

What does the future hold for Florence—and for the whole of the European Union? This is a central theme of the Festival d’Europa, a major event prompting re-flection on the Europe of tomorrow. The festival will touch down in dozens of locations, with a packed pro-gram of concerts, lectures, exhibitions, film screen-ings and more. Many English-friendly events will take place at the festival-within-a-festival Notte Blu, head-quartered at the Le Murate complex, but extending to the whole Sant’Ambrogio area, the RFK Center, the British Institute, La Cité Libreria-Café and more. 20 films from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan as well as music, art, centuries-old disciplines and guests of honour. The first part of the Dragon Film Festi-val takes a look at contemporary Chinese films at the Odeon (May 7–10) with a focus on two direc-tors and the latest masterpiece by Zhang Yimou. The festival will open with a screening of The Truth about Beauty (in Chinese with English and Italian subtitles). Tickets can be purchased online from www.boxol.it.

Headquartered at Stazione Leopolda, this ultra-contemporary performing arts show-case has a packed calendar of concerts, DJ sets, dance performances, art installations and beyond. Artists hail from dozens of dif-ferent countries and their performances range from one-man shows to major en-semble productions. See the full program at www.fabbricaeuropa.net/en.

Spend your Saturday at the ultimate piazza party! Students at the Lorenzo de’ Medici Insti-tute will show off what they’ve worked on all se-mester in their courses on everything from inte-rior decoration to graphic design and printmak-ing. Take in a dance performance at 4pm, but expect more than ballerinas outside the basilica: students will present their best flamenco moves, too! Capping off the festivities is the fashion department’s annual ‘runway’ show along the north flank of the church. For more information, call 055/287360.
