February 18, 2018 Dear Friends,

We have begun the holy season of Lent. Lent as we know is 40 days in length, beginning this past Wednesday, Ash Wednesday, and ending on Holy Thursday, March 29, at the beginning of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. The three facets of our Lenten experience are traditionally prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. This is to be a time of spiritual preparation for Easter for each one of us.

The major point made in the First Reading from the Book of Genesis is God’s covenant. In this reading, God declares a covenant with Noah, his family, and all their descendants, in effect with all humankind, including us. There are many covenants described in the Bible, but this covenant is unique in that it applies to all humanity. In this covenant, God promises never again to destroy all life on earth, and He creates the rainbow as the sign of this “everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” Every time we see a rainbow, we should remember the faithfulness of God and every one of His promises.

Normally, a covenant is an agreement between two parties, in this case God and humankind. However, this covenant is “divinely imposed,” making it plain to us that there is no room for negotiation on our part. We either accept or reject this covenant. Accepting it means working to fulfill God’s expectations. That is part of what Lent is all about for us.

In our Second Reading from the First Letter of Peter, he says, “Christ suffered for our sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God.” Is that not what should be happening to us now and throughout Lent? We are to be led to God in more and better ways. Peter makes reference to Noah and thus implies the covenant that God has with us. Nevertheless, in fulfilling that covenant, we have to do something also. We might say it is all about restoring and strengthening our relationship with God. What we do during Lent and the efforts we make and the disciplines we practice all should have that intention.

Our connection with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is similar to the story about a little boy flying a kite that flew so high he could no longer see it. An observer said to him, “How do you know it is still up there?” The boy replied “I can feel the pull.” Lent is a time for us to “feel the pull.” We may not see Jesus in Heaven, but we need to feel Him pulling us toward Him.

Please see in this bulletin all the many ways your parish is helping you to celebrate Lent. It is a season

where all of us are called to “turn away from sin and be more faithful to the Gospel.”

The Disciple Maker Index

Survey is Open Please take part in our parish’s Disciple Maker Index, a 10-

15 minute online survey: • Go to www.disciplemakerindex.com

• Or pick up a paper copy in the parish office or the St. Katharine Drexel Room in church.

• Complete/Return the survey by March 5. The survey will ask you to reflect on your own spiritual growth and provide feedback on the parish’s efforts to help you grow. All responses will be confidential and the parish will only receive information about the community as a whole. We are trying to get the highest response rate possible. This information will be invaluable to Monsignor McLoone and our various ministries as we plan ahead and try to be the best disciples we can be. We will receive the results this spring/summer at which time we will share what we have learned with the entire parish. Thank you for helping with this important project!

Hoops Mania Fundraiser Proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit our teens who will attend the Youth Conference at Franciscan University in Steubenville this summer. HOOPS MANIA is based on College Basketball’s national championship tournament. Tickets cost $10 each, and each ticket holder can win $1,000 OR MORE based on the total points scored by the basketball teams printed on the back of their sweepstakes game card(s). Each game card is randomly assigned 8 teams (2 from each region) that will play in the National Championship tournament. To play the game, those who purchase ticket(s) simply add up the points scored by their 8 teams throughout the tournament. Tickets are on sale in the Saint John Neumann Room after Mass in February and are also in the parish office.

Rites of Sending and Election

for RCIA Annually, on the first weekend of Lent, the Church celebrates two additional Rites with those preparing to become Catholic at the Easter Vigil or during the Easter Season. The Rite of Sending affords the local parish community the opportunity to express its approval of the Catechumens (those to be baptized) and Candidates (those already baptized) and send them forth to the celebration of election assured of the parish’s care and support.

Both groups will be presented to Archbishop Chaput during the Rite of Election, which takes place at the Cathedral in Philadelphia. It is during this Rite that the Church chooses/elects to admit Catechumens and Candidates to the next major celebration of the Church in which they will be fully initiated through reception of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil or make a Solemn Profession of Faith and then receive Confirmation and Eucharist at the Saturday evening after Easter.

As always, the prayerful support of the parish community is most appreciated by those preparing to receive sacraments.

The King’s Men (18 & over) offers a time with other men to engage, discuss and challenge you into living a full Christian life. Every meeting starts with a rosary, a 15- minute spiritual exercise, 30 minutes for discussion and 15- minutes of challenges among your peers. The next King’s Men meeting will take place on Thursday, February 22 at 7:30 PM in the Parish Meeting Center.

The Scrutinies Parishioners attending Noon Mass on 3/4, 5:00 Mass on 3/10, and 9:00 Mass on 3/18 (the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent) will share time with the RCIA group as they prepare to be welcomed into the Church. The readings focus on the themes of baptism and repentance. The Gospel passages for these three Sundays include the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:5-42), the man born blind (John 9:1-41), and the raising of Lazarus (John 11:1-45).

These are the “scrutiny” Sundays. The scrutinies celebrate conversion and offer our Elect an opportunity for introspection along with time for prayer, reflection, repentance, and the exorcisms (a series of blessings conferred to strengthen them against the power of temptation, sin, and Satan; to lead them ever closer to Christ – the Way, the Truth, and the Life; and to deepen their decision and desire to love God above all else).

The Elect are asked to ponder the Word of God in their hearts, to know Christ who came to save the lost, to confess themselves to be sinners, to reject all that is displeasing to God, to ask the Holy Spirit to help them overcome their weaknesses, to learn how to please God, and to put their hope in Christ, finding peace and holiness in Him.

The parish community is also asked at this time to seek continued conversion of heart so the weak may be strengthened, the broken restored, the lost found, and the found redeemed.

40 Days for Life Ash Wednesday was the beginning of Lent and also the start of the Spring campaign for 40 Days for Life (40 DFL). 40 DFL is a time of prayer, fasting and standing vigil at abortion clinics throughout the United States and other countries to bring awareness of the killing of babies in the womb. The Planned Parenthood Clinic in West Chester performs abortions at its Wayne & Market Streets location every Friday. The Spring campaign will end on Palm Sunday, March 25. St. Joseph Parish has participated in 40 DFL since it became a national event in 2007. It is very important that we show our resolve to end abortion and you can do this by participating in the Spring Campaign. Watch the bulletin each week to see the date of St. Joseph Parish’s day. Any questions call Pat DiPietro at 610-269-2093.

Deepening Prayer Prayer invites us to become aware of the living interaction between the God who will always remain beyond all we can think or imagine and the God who abides deep in our own hearts. As we become more aware of these sacred encounters, we enter into a personal and intimate relationship with the Author of our being. We become a place where God’s dream is becoming alive in our personal life.

How might we deepen this call, this desire in our own hearts, for a personal relationship with the One who is closer to us than we are to ourselves and whose dream of us is coming to birth every day in our lives?

Pam Seymour, a spiritual director trained in the Ignatian tradition, will lead us in ways of deepening 3 kinds prayer: verbal/vocal, meditation and contemplation, using scripture, breathing, music, art and poetry.

Sessions will be held on Thursdays, March 1, 8 and 15 from 7-8:30 in the St. John Neumann Room in the church.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus urges His listeners to do two things: to believe in the Good News and to repent. The steward is called to repent: to acquire an openness to begin anew, to change existing attitudes and habits, and to act with faith in the Gospel.

In this season of Lent, now is the time to ask ourselves whether or not we truly believe in the Gospel; and if we do, to what extent are we willing to change our prevailing habits and be more faithful to the Gospel?
