CHOP’S HOUSE Junior Justin Malone, known by his nickname, “Chop”, has been sensational thus far on the mound in 2011. The school’s all-time saves leader (12), Malone has started the season with 13 straight scoreless innings in going 2-0. He can pass former Panther David Hawkins Friday with three more shutout frames for the school’s all-time consecutive scoreless innings mark, a record that’s stood since 2002.

STAFF’S SENSATIONAL START As a staff, GSU pitchers began the season with a school-record 20.2 straight scoreless innings, tossing back-to-back shutouts for the first time since consecutive 9-0 wins over Mercer and Charlotte in 1980. After throwing just two shutouts all of last season, the staff has combined for three so far in 2011. The Panthers led all CAA teams to start the week with a 2.34 team ERA.

TO THE MAX Senior center fielder Brett Maxwell leads the Panthers this season with a .444 batting average, having hit safely in eight of the team’s nine games. The Douglasville, Ga., native leads the team with five doubles and fourteen overall hits. He’s also drawn five walks.

MICOWSKI NAMED PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEAR After earning All-CAA first team honors in 2010, senior outfielder Mark Micowski enters the 2011 campaign as the Preseason Player of the Year in the CAA. The senior from Haddam, Conn., batted .382 with five homers and 40 RBI while scoring a school-record 69 runs from his leadoff position. Micowski spent his first two years at the University of Vermont, where he earned second-team all-America East honors in 2009. He transferred to Georgia State when the Catamounts discontinued their program. Joining Micowski on the Preseason All-CAA squad are outfielder Ryan Fleming (first team), third baseman Brandon Williams (first team), second baseman Rob Lind (honor-able mention), pitcher-infielder Justin Malone (honorable mention as a utility player) and designated hitter Joey Wood (honorable mention).

PANTHERS IN THE CAA Georgia State was picked to finish second in the Colonial Athletic Association this season in preseason voting by the league’s head coaches. The Panthers finished just two points behind favorite James Madison, although GSU and JMU each received four first-place votes. The Panthers look to earn a spot in the four-team CAA Championship for the third straight year. Georgia State is one of just two conference schools, along with UNC Wilm-ington, to qualify in each of the previous two years. In 2010, the Panthers went 17-6-1 in the CAA to finish second in the regular-season standings and set a school-record for CAA victories.

RAISING THE BAR The Panthers will have many new offensive marks to aim for in 2011 after setting nine offensive team records in 2010. Last year’s tem set new marks for batting average (.356), runs scored (608), hits (751), runs batted in (549), doubles (145), home runs (82), total bases (1,178) base on balls (311) and slugging percentage (.558).

THE ELUSIVE 40 While Georgia State has won 30-plus games in each of the last three seasons, the team looks to reach the 40-win mark for the first time in program history in 2011. To do so, the Panthers must top the 2009 squad’s school record of 39 victories. GSU won 33 games in 2008, 39 in 2009 and 34 contests in 2010.

CHASING HISTORY Five Panthers have a chance in 2011 to eclipse Bradley Logan (2007-10) as the program’s all-time winningest players this season. Seniors Theo Asher, Will Campbell, Zach Chastain, Jonathan Kolowich and Aaron Schmitz have played all four seasons at Georgia State and can pass Logan’s 132 career wins with 27 victories this season.
