APRIL 2018 Page 1 Every member a Minister’” APRIL 2018 Dear Friends, Easter is all about grace. Gods grace. Amazing grace. Undeserved grace. In the Methodist tradition, we use all kinds of adjectives to try and unpack what grace is and how it works in our lives, in our church, and in the world. Grace is Gods love that reaches out to us before we are even aware of who God is or that God desires to redeem us, transform us, and make us new. This is grace that goes beforeus, seeking us out, drawing us in, and pursuing us in love; we refer to this as prevenient grace. Grace also describes Gods gift of salvation through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. We often call this justifying grace, where God forgives us for our sin, wipes the slate clean, and restores us to right relationship with our Creator. After we receive Christ, grace continues to work in our lives helping us to live and love more like God does. We call this sanctifying grace: grace that continues to work in the lives of believers as we strive to grow in holiness of heart and life. As Easter people, we believe grace continues to envelop us even after death. Glorifying grace is the gift of life eternal, where we are welcomed into the very presence of God who has conquered the last enemy of death and the grave. I could not think of a better theme and focus for this Easter season than grace. Beginning this Easter Sunday and the three following Sundays, we will begin a new series titled: Grace is Greater.I hope you will mark your calendars and plan to bring a friend. We are also inviting you to pick up the book by the same title, written by Kyle Idleman, and follow along with your family or your small group. Dear Friends,

Easter is all about grace. God’s grace. Amazing grace. Undeserved grace. In the Methodist tradition, we use all kinds of adjectives to try and unpack what grace is and how it works in our lives, in our church, and in the world. Grace is God’s love that reaches out to us before we are even aware of who God is or that God desires to redeem us, transform us, and make us new. This is grace that “goes before” us, seeking us out, drawing us in, and pursuing us in love; we refer to this as prevenient grace. Grace also describes God’s gift of salvation through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Beginning this Easter Sunday and the three following Sundays, we will begin a new series titled: “Grace is Greater.” I hope you will mark your calendars and plan to bring a friend. We are also inviting you to pick up the book by the same title, written by Kyle Idleman, and follow along with your family or your small group. Here is an excerpt:

“No sin is so great, no bitterness so deep that God’s grace cannot transform the heart and rewrite the story. . . . Perhaps nothing is as difficult to explain as God’s grace. The best way—perhaps the only real way—to understand it is to experience it.”

LIBRARY LOWDOWN FOR APRIL Spotl ight on . . . BILLY GRAHAM When Rev. Billy Graham died February 21, 2018, people everywhere felt the loss of our nation’s pastor and

evangelist to the world. Many watched his funeral and saw his children honor their father and proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ. Billy Graham, his wife Ruth

Bell, and his children published inspirational books for

decades. FUMC Library has many of these volumes.

This month, they will be located on the “Spotlight Shelf.”

Read or reread these encouraging titles:

BILLY GRAHAM

• The Holy Spirit: Activating God’s Power in Your Life

• Hope for the Troubled Heart: Finding God in the Midst of Pain

• Just As I Am: The Autobiography of Billy Graham

• Nearing Home: Life, Faith, and Finishing Well

• Led to Believe

• Amazing Grace (with Phillip Yancey)

RUTH BELL GRAHAM

• It’s My Turn

• One Wintry Night (children’s book)

• Prodigals and Those Who Love Them

• Sitting by My Laughing Fire

ANNE GRAHAM LOTZ

• God’s Story: Finding Meaning for Your Life through

Knowing God

• Heaven, God’s Promise for Me

• I Saw the Lord: A Wake-Up Call for Your Heart

• Just Give Me Jesus

• Why? Trusting God When You Don’t Understand

• The Vision of His Glory: Finding Hope through the Revelation of Jesus Christ

• My Jesus Is . . . Everything (book and CD)

• My Heart’s Cry: Longing for More of Jesus

RUTH GRAHAM

• Fear Not Tomorrow, God Is Already There: Trusting Him in Uncertain Times

FRANKLIN GRAHAM

• Living Beyond the Limits: A Life in Sync with God

• The Name

• Rebel with a Cause: Finally Comfortable Being Graham

Several folks from FUMC visited the Billy Graham Library in

Charlotte in January. After a tour of the museum, we shopped

in Ruth’s Attic Bookstore. Housed “above” the bookstore are 12,000 volumes from the private collection of

Billy and Ruth Bell Graham.

Quotation seen in the library: “So many people think that somehow I carry a revival around in a suitcase,

and they just announce me and something happens—but that’s not true. . . . If God should take His hand off

me, I would have no more spiritual power . . . The success of our meetings is spiritual—It’s God answering

prayer. I cannot take credit for any of it.—Billy Graham

HELP SEND A CHILD TO CAMP! Would you like to help offset the cost of

summer camp for children in

kindergarten through 8th grade? Then, please consider donating $110 to our campership fund or providing a full campership to families in

need. Contact Brian ([email protected]) if you are

interested.

The Board of Directors would like to thank George McGonagle for building larger, more sturdy shelving in the attic behind the stage. These new shelves have made it possible to get some of the larger items off the floor. The attic is neater, and items are more accessible. The daffodils and hyacinths are in full bloom and the smell is heavenly. The bulbs will be planted in the garden of a grandson to remind us each spring of Mom and what a loving person she was in life. We truly appreciate all the love, support, and care showered on our family as my Mom begins her journey home to our Heavenly Father. I know this will sustain my Dad and our family in the days ahead. Please continue to hold us in your prayers. Sincerely, Nancy Murphy, daughter The Roy Salter family

April is Yard Sale Month at FUMC Graham!

Here are two ways you can help! 1. Donate items for sale! We accept almost anything

except computers, computer servers, monitors, printers, fax machines, or telephones. We also do NOT pick up, so you must arrange to have your donations delivered to the church. We will be accepting donations from 9am-3pm beginning Monday, 4.23-Friday, 4.27.

2. Shop! The Yard Sale will be held in Stafford Hall (Rm. 125) and is open to the public at the following times: 9am-3pm Tuesday, 4.25-Friday, 4.27 and

7am-noon Saturday, 4.28

Backpack Blessings

Visit the food pantry trailer at South Graham Elementary School any Thursday afternoon, and you will see a flurry of activity! Volunteers from our church are busy preparing “Panda Packs” (prepackaged kid-friendly food packs purchased from Second Harvest Food Bank of NC). After our volunteers organize the food, teachers distribute the Panda Packs on Friday, and identified children take them home in their backpacks.

As we look toward the end of this school year and anticipate the needs of the coming school year, we welcome your continued monetary gifts to support this important outreach.

Would you consider becoming a Panda Pack Partner by sponsoring a child for 5 weeks = $20, 10 weeks = $40, or the entire year = $160?

Please make checks payable to FUMCG and note “C4C Backpacks”

on your memo line. Thank you! Together, we can help put an end to childhood hunger in our community.
