In 1960, a young and bright man came to the national stage. He had a funny way of talking but at 43, he made his move to ascend to the Presidency of the United States. That
man was John F. Kennedy. Kennedy is remembered as the young president who began the space program and guided the United States through the Cuban missile crisis. Many remember or have seen video of Kennedy’s assassination in 1963. In current Gallup opinion polls, J.F.K. is remembered as the most outstanding president at 74% support.
What many do not remember or do not know is that in 1960, Kennedy faced an uphill battle for the Presidency. At a time of high Protestant Christian affiliation in the country, Kennedy was Catholic. No Catholic had ever been elected as president. As soon as he won his party’s nomination, Protestant ministers and concerned voters grumbled about the President’s Catholic faith. They believed that Kennedy would do the will of the Pope in Rome, rather than the will of the United States people. In the southern parts of the country, there was doubt, fear, and distrust of Kennedy.
In order to address the fears of Kennedy’s allegiance to the American people, Kennedy spoke to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association on September 12, 1960 and said,
“But because I am a Catholic, and no Catholic has ever been elected president, the real issues in this campaign have been obscured — perhaps deliberately, in some quarters less responsible than this…I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute, where no Catholic prelate would tell the president (should he be Catholic) how to act, and no Protestant minister would tell his parishioners for whom to vote… It was Virginia's harassment of Baptist preachers, for example, that helped lead to Jefferson's statute of religious freedom. Today I may be the victim, but tomorrow it may be you — until the whole fabric of our harmonious society is ripped at a time of great national peril.”
The grumbling of southern ministers and voters continued. According to most political estimations, Kennedy’s faith almost cost him the presidency because politicos believe his faith lost him 1.5 million votes. The presidential election of 1960 was decided by only 100,000 votes. The closest in history.
No one, not even the President of the United States is immune to grumbling. Jesus Christ was no different. In Luke 19:7, we read,
“All who saw it began to grumble and said, "He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner.”
We find grumbling in John 6:41:
“At this the Jews began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”
Continued on next page
P A G E 2
Even the Israelites grumbled at Moses’ and Aaron’s ability to lead in Exodus 16:
“In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron.”
At this point you might ask, “What is grumbling, anyway?” Good question. Various dictionaries define grumbling or to grumble, as a verb, “to complain quietly about something: to talk in an unhappy way or to mutter in discontent.” Clearly, grumbling occurs between people and is directed towards another. In truth, grumbling is not constructive, solution based, or helpful. Grumbling separates people, divides families, and is based on fear and anxiety.
There is, however, another way to define the word “grumble”. As an intransitive verb, to grumble means “rumble” (I know, it rhymes). Rumble is defined slightly differently as: “to move along with a low, heavy, continuous sound.” If grumbling is what occurs with unhappy people, then rumbling occurs when something is moving at a slow heavy pace. Grumbling has a very negative connotation, but rumbling has a very neutral connotation.
At this point, you are thinking, “Where is he going with this?”
As I reflect upon what it must have been like, standing there as the stone at the tomb of Jesus was rolled away, I wonder what it sounded like. When Jesus died, the Gospels record a rumbling of the earth and the Temple curtain was torn in two. On Easter morning when the stone was rolled away, I believe there had to have been a great rumbling. The sound of a heavy stone moving against another stone was a distinct sound.
That rumbling sound was the sound of salvation.
That rumbling sound on Easter morning was the sound of Jesus Christ defeating death and giving us eternal life. The rumbling sound announced to all the world that God had just done something great, new and different. No longer would the people walk in darkness. The rumbling of the stone at the tomb was the sound of God’s salvation for his creation.
Out of the grumbling Jesus endured in his life and
death, there was a salvific rumbling of new life! Often, something new and different does not have to happen quickly. As a matter of fact, change often happens slowly. Change can be a rumble of moving the stone of progress in our lives. When that stone covering the tomb was rolled away, a great rumble of God came forth! God changed the world! God forever changed his relationship with humanity and it was good. God changed things.
James instructed his readers in James 5:9:
“Beloved, do not grumble against one another, so that you may not be judged. See, the Judge is standing at the doors!”
This Easter, let us change our grumbling into rumbling… a rumble of an announcement that being a disciple of Jesus Christ is about living into God, offering grace and forgiveness, and walking patiently with one another. A rumble of an announcement comes to us that God is changing us into deeper disciples of Jesus.
John F. Kennedy took the grumbling of doubts and turned it into a rumble of progress and hope. Jesus Christ took the grumbling of people and turned it into a rumble of salvation. This Easter season, let us all go from grumble to a Godly rumble of change and new life.
Love and Grace,
Rev. Alan Rudnick

HOLY WEEK SERVICES
PALM SUNDAY March 29 Worship Service 10:30 a.m. Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. With a procession of waving palms, children, youth, and adults all participate in worship. This is a joyous and festive day and celebrates Christ’s entry as the King of Kings. MAUNDY THURSDAY April 2, 7:00 p.m.
You are invited to come and remember The Last Supper through prayer, worship, song, and reflection. Worshipers will experience the last days of
Jesus through scripture and song. Communion will be served and everyone will be invited to receive communion “at the table”, which will provide a deeper and more intimate setting to receive the communion elements. GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE April 3, 7:00 p.m. We will join with the First Presbyterian Church (22 West High St.) for a Tenebrae Service. This simple and powerful service dramatizes the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. EASTER EGG HUNT April 4, 10:00 a.m.
We invite all children and families to come celebrate the signs of new life together at the Parsonage (818 Greenwood Drive, Ballston
Spa, RSVP 288-3100). We anticipate the new life of our risen Christ by children hunting for eggs (a sign of new life), adults fellowshipping, sharing breakfast fare and beverages together. Families will hear a word from Pastor Alan of the new life in Christ’s resurrection. In the event of inclement weather the event will be canceled and filled eggs will be passed out to the children during Easter Sunday worship.
EASTER SUNRISE SERVICE April 5, 6:00 a.m.
Join us for an informal Easter sunrise service and light breakfast at Don and Barbara Roll’s home, 6025 Jockey St., Galway. We will gather at 6:00 a.m. for song and worship. The Roll’s property provides a wonderful sunrise and Easter morning experience.
EASTER WORSHIP SERVICE, April 5, 10:30 a.m. Christ is risen! He has risen indeed! Christians have proclaimed these words for 2,000 years. The celebration of the resurrection is a day of proclamation. Our worship service will inspire and excite all to experience the joy of Jesus’ victory over death and sin. We encourage you to bring your friends and family to this special Sunday of worship!

PARDON OUR DUST!
There’s a new look coming to the kitchen! Please excuse the temporary inconvenience as we make a few upgrades.
Thanks to several recent monetary grants, the Summer Lunch Program and Christ’s Cupboard were able to purchase an additional refrigerator and freezer which will greatly enhance the function of both programs.
All the existing cupboards were “repurposed” by being relocated in the kitchen and additional cabinets were added to increase the storage space. Finally, a dishwasher has been donated and will be installed to complete the transformation.
Thanks to the Board of Trustees for removing the old sinks and plumbing. The hope is to resell this unit to help defray some of the other expenses of the project.
All in all, we got a lot of “bang for our buck” on this one! Most importantly, however, is that these upgrades will help us serve our community better.

NOW HIRING
KidsFirst Childcare Center @ Christ Episcopal Church in Ballston Spa is now hiring Head Teachers for all age groups. A degree in Early Childhood Education
or an CDA (Child Development Associates) credential is required. Please go to our website www.kidsfirst1.com for an application or call Barbara at 309-3540 for more information.
BUDGET AND FINANCE
Our exceptionally cold and snowy winter can be attested to by our income for January and February. Pledges through February were behind by $10,488 and non-pledges were behind projections by $1,860. Hopefully with a more spring-like climate we can all catch up on our pledges and attendance.
Income through February was $34,481 and expenses were $47,579 leaving a short-fall of $13,098.
Our Committee met with the Ballston Spa National Bank Trust Department to receive the 2014 performance report. The return on our investment was 5.15%. We felt that this was not keeping up with the current indices return and will be looking into the investing strategy.
For all those who use the church credit card, our Committee unanimously voted to initiate a voucher system like we use for all other expenditures. Please fill out a voucher and have your request approved by the appropriate board chair before making purchases.
Board and Committee chairs are always available to answer any questions you may have regarding the 2015 budget and expenditures.

MISSION TRIP
We are going on a local mission trip to Saratoga Springs on May 2, 2015. Help is needed by the Capital Fund of Saratoga County, Inc. with the Saratoga Springs Horse Show. We will be helping to park cars, help in the kitchen, get supplies or do whatever is needed. This organization is a not-for-profit charity that gives its profits from the horse show to over 50 local charities.
Won’t you consider being “HERE TO SERVE” and going with us to help out for a few hours on a Saturday morning, or for as long as your schedule allows. A sign up will be posted by the coffee fellowship area.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING
The history of the congregation known as The First Baptist Church of Ballston Spa is important not merely for nostalgic thoughts of the past, but to preserve the present and plan for the future. I trust many of you avail yourself of the opportunity to stop by the Historical Display located in the main Fellowship Room and take note of the exhibits that change every two to three months. If you'd like more than an overview of church history, please see me to set a time to look at materials that are located in the files and records kept in our Historical Room.

CHURCH MOUSE NURSERY SCHOOL
March was a busy month at The Church Mouse. The children had fun celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday, and enjoyed
their snack of green eggs and ham. We talked about the unpredictable March weather, and are learning many new spring songs. The Scotia Glenville Museum brought us Ocean’s Alive. They do a fabulous job using a puppet show, puzzles,
and other hands on activities. The children also had fun making a specific animal or bird to hang on our school wide bulletin board. We are celebrating Jesus and Spring: New Life and New Hope!
Pastor Alan will start off the month of April with a parade in chapel, celebrating Palm Sunday. He will also share the Easter story with the children. We will have our Easter celebration snack, color eggs, and make beautiful Easter cards for our parents. It is wonderful being able to celebrate the good news that Jesus is alive!
School will be closed April 3-10 for our Easter/Spring break. Spring is a great time to focus on Science. We will be celebrating Earth Day, and will be discussing the importance of recycling and reusing. We will learn about the water cycle, plants, and planets. We will be planting some flower seeds to be given to our Moms at our Mother’s Day teas.
Plans are in the works for our 2nd Annual Church Mouse Golf Tournament, to be held Saturday, May 16th. If you are interested in participating, get your foursome together, and contact me at 495-5894 or [email protected]. We also need sponsors for each hole. More information to follow.

Keith Sprenger, the golf pro at the course, is the husband of one of our board members, Kim Sprenger. He will be planning a great event for us. If you are interested in participating in this tournament, and/or know some golfers who would be interested, please let us know. We would like to have a general idea of how many would be interested.
We are looking for businesses to sponsor holes, so if you would like to advertise or know someone who would, please have them contact me ASAP. [email protected] or 495-5894
Why not put together a group of your friends, or coworkers to take part. Make sure you let extended family members be aware of this event. We already have some grandparents who are saving the date!
Please consider participating and supporting The Church Mouse. Last year was a GREAT success. Money earned was used to buy new tables and chairs for our classroom. More details to follow.

BOARD OF DEACONS
We are in the process of experiencing Lent, the time of year when we draw ever closer to our Lord Jesus Christ as we follow in his footsteps to the cross and resurrection.
Your Board of Deacons is again offering Easter lilies this year for purchase which will grace our Sanctuary on Easter Sunday, April 5th. We hope you will all feel led to express your joy in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ by honoring or remembering family and friends.
The Board of Deacons has been continually helping many persons in need within our community, and we are thankful for the ability to help those in need.
On March 22, we were privileged to have American Baptists' General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Roy Medley with us in worship. He gave us an inspirational message that will continue to inspire and help us as we move forward to solidify our own vision as a Church family.
On Wednesday, March 25, our church served as hosts for the Lenten Luncheon held at the Presbyterian Church. Many thanks to all who provided soups, chilis, sandwiches and desserts, as well as served as hostesses and servers at the luncheon which hosted around 100 people from around Ballston Spa's churches. We always enjoy the ecumenical opportunities we have to gather in Christ together.
As Easter approaches, we also look forward to Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, sunrise service on Easter morning with the Rolls and Easter services at First Baptist Church. In addition, we have been invited for an ecumenical worship at the First Presbyterian Church on Good Friday, called the Tenebrae service, which is both holy and solemn.
Our newest Army platoon in Bosnia has been adopted. We have 17 men and 3 women that we will support until August, when they will deploy home. This is the ninth troop support mission First Baptist Church has undertaken. We send monthly packages of snacks, cookies, candy, personal care items such as shampoo, soap and toilet paper, and
pens, pencils, magazines, playing cards, paper and puzzle books, crosswords and word searches. We are always grateful for your donations of items and monetary support.
Your Board of Deacons prays continually for the health of our Congregation and our Church and we are committed to serving God by serving you.
Your Board of Deacons is Vallee Albert, Debby Hodgkins, Gene Kenyon, Diane McGarry, Pat Rogers, Bob Staulters, Terry van den Heever and Sherry Wardell.
In His Service, Vallee Albert
