HISTORY - THE ARTS OF FASHION INTERNATIONAL FASHION STUDENT COmpETITIONThe Arts of Fashion Foundation Student Competition was created in December 2001 as the U.S. extension of the •world renowned Concours International des Jeunes Créateurs de Mode - an international fashion design student contest sponsored by Air France and the French Federation of Couture. This global contest was introduced in 1982, in Japan, and has grown steadily over 23 years. In 2006, this international student contest stopped to be held in Paris. Since then, the Arts of Fashion Foundation public American nonprofit 501(C)(3) brought this international competition •to the United States and continues to make it a unique and authentic annual fashion rendez-vous for students, schools and fashion professionals from all over the world to celebrate creativity in fashion. This Premier International Student Fashion Competition takes place during the annual Arts of Fashion Symposium •and is hosted every year by a different university or school and their fashion department.

CONCEPT & SELECTIVE PROCESS Every year a different theme is chosen, and from October of the previous year to April, fashion students register •onlinetoparticipate.Theythenhavetosendsketchesandtechnicalsheetsofa ‘minicollection’of3silhouettesdesigned around the theme. In 2010, 320 fashion students registered from 82 schools, universities and colleges of 26 countries. At the end of April, a jury panel, composed of national and international fashion professors, selects 50 project •illustrations that best represent the set theme and reflect creative and innovative potential. The 50 selected candidates have to make 2 out of the 3 silhouettes they submitted. These 50 projects (100 designs) are judged by a panel of professional fashion designers and are shown on the runway •for the finale. 7 designers are awarded and receive scholarship and internship opportunities in creative programs and fashion houses as well as monetary prize.

The spirit of this competition is not to try to find the next Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen or even rank the designers from best to worst, but to recognize and award the 7 most creative projects in order for these students to continue their education and training in order to become better designers, by offering them the opportunity to work, study and learn from renowned mentor designers.

TOTAL bASIC COST $ 93,600Average budget for the fashion show production $ 55,000$ 2,000 monetary prizes for each of the awarded students $ 14,0003 summer abroad scholarships - value $ 4,200 $ 12,6001 year abroad scholarship - value $ 12,000 $ 12,000

2011 ARTS OF FASHION FOUNDATION INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION - THEME : TENSION2011 will be the 5th consecutive year that this international competition will be held in the United States.2011 is the 10th anniversary of the Arts of Fashion Foundation.

SAN FRANCISCO ARTS OF FASHION FOUNDATION SHOwDaniela Province, San Francisco Chronicle / Sunday, December 19, 2010

Two by two, the models shimmied across the runway in creations that told the story of their young designers, from Eastern European folklore in vivid colors to futuristic minimalism in stark black and white.

TheelegantBentlyReserveprovidedthesettingfor“UniquelyUntrendy,”astudentshowthatcappedaweeklongsymposiumhosted by the San Francisco Arts of Fashion Foundation. The nonprofit organization is quietly, but steadily, becoming a major player in the search for new fashion talent, and the Dec. 7 event proved once again that the hallways of fashion are no longer ruled by the elite.

Romania to ChinaWith 320 entries submitted from 83 schools in 23 countries, the final 55 chosen to present their designs were an eclectic mix of talent from countries as far-flung as Romania and South Korea. Each student showed two looks, and the 90-minute show was paced just right, thanks to the production crew of students from host school, the Art Institute of California - San Francisco.

Besides the opportunity to show in San Francisco, designers competed for AOF scholarships and internships with design houses suchasJean-CharlesdeCastelbajac,handbagdesignerJeromeDreyfussandSanFrancisco’sNiceCollective.

Colombia native Juliana Orrego Trujillo won the Nice Collective internship with looks that were Haight-Ashbury meets couture and could easily be translated to streetwear. Australian Hayley Ann Archibald created fashion origami in her blue-and-white flower-patterned dresses, while Jean-Charles de Castelbajac winner Florina Ivascu of Romania used some inspiration from Rodarte with herstarkblack“shield”dresswithcozypocketsbuiltfromtheinsideforaddedstealth.

Scholarship winner Feng Chen Wang from Beijing created looks for both men and women that were urban warrior meets tribal influence, taking the runway in wooden heel-front shoes not exactly made for walking. Also featured on the runway were finished pieces from a series of master classes taught earlier in the week by designers including RafSimon’sMatthewBlazy,AmericanMatthewAmes, andMartinMargielaalumsLaurenceTeilletandAuroreThibout.Morestudiesthanfinishedproducts, aseriesinspiredbyYvesSaintLaurent’siconicLeSmokingcalledThankYouforSmokingrefashionedsuitjackets in new ways, while Wool It dove into the depths of knitwear construction.

French-expat founder Nathalie Doucet is the force behind the event, which aims to foster international cultural exchange and creativity through fashion. She believes San Francisco is a fashion center in its own right, with a strong art culture mixed with a bit of rebellion.“Weneedacitysomewherewherecomingtogetherforfashiondoesnotmeananotherfashionweekbutaplacetorethinkthebreadthoffashion,”shesaidviae-mail.StrongercommunityIt’sherhopethateventslikethesewillbuildastrongerfashioncommunityinSanFrancisco,andthat’swhyshe’schosentohostthe10thanniversarycelebrationhereagainnextyear.
