DESCRIPTION

Fire whirls, also known as fire devils, fire tornadoes or firenados, are whirlwinds of flame that may occur when intense heat and turbulent wind conditions combine to form whirling eddies of air. These eddies can tighten into a tornado-like structure that sucks in burning debris and combustible gases. The temperature inside the core of a fire tornado can reach up to 2,000 °F

Have you ever seen a fire tornado? Film maker Chris Tangey was caught off guard by this amazing

phenomena when he had been out in Alice Springs, Australia, scouting locations for a new movie. He also

took some very amazing photos and a video of this once in a lifetime event that unfolded right before his

eyes. Watch that video here (Watch a video of the fire tornado.) Tangey told Northern Territory News, "It

sounded like a jet fighter going by, yet there wasn't a breath of wind where we were."

The world's first confirmed case of a fire tornado has been documented by Canberra researchers, using

evidence collected from the devastating 2003 Canberra bushfires. Lead researcher Rick McRae says the fire

tornado formed in the ranges west of Canberra before pushing into the city's suburbs.

"The one that we looked at showed that as it approached the edge of Canberra, its basal diameter was nearly

half a kilometer, and the damage indicates that the horizontal wind speeds around it were in excess of 250

kilometers per hour," he said.

So what causes a fire tornado? Fire whirls, also known as fire devils, fire tornadoes or firenados, are

whirlwinds of flame that may occur when intense heat and turbulent wind conditions combine to form

whirling eddies of air. These eddies can tighten into a tornado-like structure that sucks in burning debris

and combustible gases. The temperature inside the core of a fire tornado can reach up to 2,000 °F.
