Whiskykenner wissen: Das richtige Glas veredelt denTropfen. Wer glaubt, Whisky erlebe man nur mitdem Geschmackssinn, irrt. es ist das Zusammen-spiel aus Schmecken und Riechen, das den Genuss

vervollkommnet. Die ganz unterschiedlichen Aromen des Malts eröffnen sich über den Duft. Kenner inhalieren den Geruch desWhiskys, bevor sie auch nur einen Schluck zu sich nehmen. DiesesRitual, das sogenannte „nosing“, ist auch der Auftakt einer jedenWhiskyverkostung und wird von Liebhabern auch zu hause zele-briert. Genossen werden sollte Whisky aus speziellen Gläsern, dennihre form beeinflusst die Aromenentfaltung. idealerweise sollten sieaus klarem, ungefärbtem Glas sein,so lässt sich farbe des Whiskys guterkennen.

„On the rocks“-Klassiker:der Tumbler

Der Tumbler ist wohl das be-kannteste Whiskyglas und vorallem in nordamerika ein Klassiker. Aus gutem Grund,jenseits des Atlantiks wird gerne Scotch on the rocks getrunken. Der schwere Glas-boden und die dicken Wändedes Tumblers verzögern die er-wärmung des Whiskys. Die breiteÖffnung erleichtert das einfüllen voneiswürfeln – sorgt allerdings auch dafür, dass die Aromen schneller verfliegen.

Snifter und Glencairn

Undenkbar: eine Whiskyverkostung aus Tumblern. Profis trinkenaus einem nosing-Glas, einem sogenannten Snifter, der sich durchseine markante Tulpenform auszeichnet. Die typische Verjüngungdes Glases verhindert das schnelle Verfliegen der Aromen und sorgtfür eine Bündelung der Duftstoffe, was die Wahrnehmung deutlich intensiviert. Die breite Öffnung des Glasrandes lässt den Whiskyweitflächig und gleichmäßig auf die Zunge fließen. Der lange Stieldes Glases verhindert eine erwärmung durch die hand.

ein Verwandter des Swifters ist der Glencairn, der als „Scotland’sOffi cial Whisky Glass“ gilt. Auch dieses Glas ist tulpenförmig, ver-fügt aber über einen kurzen und kräftigen Stiel. Anders als beimSnifter ist hier die Übertragung der handwärme auf den Whisky gewünscht, da sie die entfaltung der Aromen unterstützt.

W hisky connoisseurs know: the right glass refines

the contents. If you thought that whisky was

only experienced with the taste buds, you were

mistaken. It is the interaction of taste and smell that

makes the enjoyment perfect. The widely different aromas of the

malt are released via its fragrance. Aficionados inhale the smell of

the whisky before even taking a sip. This ritual, so-called “nosing“,

is the first step in whisky tasting and is also celebrated at home

by enthusiasts. Whisky should be enjoyed in special glasses, the

form of which influences the unfurling of the aroma. Ideally, they

should be made of clear, uncoloured glass, which

enable the colour of the whisky to be clearly

distinguished.

Classic on the rocks: the tumbler

The tumbler is the best-

known whisky glass and is

a classic in North America

in particular. And for

good reason – scotch is

often drunk on the rocks

on the other side of the

Atlantic. The heavy glass

base and thick sides of

the tumbler delay

the warming of

the whisky. The

wide opening en -

ables ice cubes to be

added – but also allows

aromas to disperse faster.

Snifter and Glencairn

Unthinkable: whisky tasting from tumblers. Experts drink from a

nosing glass, a so-called snifter, characterised by a distinctive tulip

shape. The typical narrowing of the glass prevents the aroma from

dispersing quickly and ensures the bundling of the notes, resulting

in significantly more intense perception. The wide opening of the lip

of the glass allows the whisky to flow evenly over the tongue. The

long stem of the glass prevents the hand from warming the liquid.

A relative of the snifter is the Glencairn, known as “Scotland’s

Official Whisky Glass“. This glass is also tulip-shaped, but has a

short, stout stem. In contrast to the snifter, the transfer of warmth

from the hand to the whisky is intended, as this supports the

development of the aroma.
