PRAYER FOR A PANDEMIC May we, who are merely inconvenienced,

remember those whose lives are at stake.

May we, who have no risk factors,

remember those most vulnerable.

May we, who have the luxury of working from home,

remember those who must choose

between preserving their own health,

or work for the health of others.

May we, who have the flexibility to care for our children

when their schools close,

remember those who do not have that option.

May we, who have to cancel our trips,

remember those who cannot afford to travel

and have no safe place to go.

May we, who are losing our margin money in the

tumult of the economic market,

remember those who have no margin at all.

May we, who settle in for a quarantine at home,

remember those who have no home.

As fear grips our country, let us choose common sense.

During this time when we cannot physically

wrap our arms around each other,

let us find other ways to support each other.

AMEN

PLEASE CONSIDER ONLINE GIVING during these uncertain times

- We rely on your weekly contributions to cover all parish expens-

es. With the heightened concern over the Covid-19 virus, many are

choosing wisely to stay home especially if in the high risk categories,

and we support that 100%. It is not a sin to miss Mass under these

circumstances. Those who refrain from attending Mass due to illness

are not committing a sin.

At the same time, if your circumstances allow, we ask that you con-

tinue to support the parish on a weekly basis by enrolling in online

giving at Faithdirect.net or a bill-pay program so that we are assured

of your support even when you cannot join us for Mass. The Faith

Direct parish code is VA271. We thank you for your consideration.

Lenten blessings and good health to you all, Fr. Tim and Fr. Martin

2020 BISHOP’S LENTEN APPEAL STEADFAST IN FAITH AND JOYFUL IN HOPE

The Bishop’s Lenten Appeal is critical to our diocesan needs and we are asking every household in our parish to support this appeal to the extent that they are able. The BLA funds many programs, services and ministries that serve people in need and furthers the Gospel mission of Jesus Christ in our diocese. Let us join together to do the Lord’s work – works that touch the lives and souls of thousands of people. Thank you!

CENSUS GOES LIVE - The US Census went live, Thursday, March

12th. Please know that it is critical that we are all counted. If you have neighbors that may need help, please offer. Please go to cen-sus.gov on or after March 12th.

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacra-ment. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacra-mentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

UPDATED CORONAVIRUS ALERT -

MASS IS CANCELED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE On March 16, Bishop Burbidge announced via a video

message that until further notice, all public celebrations

of the Mass are canceled throughout the Diocese. Bish-

op Burbidge has asked pastors to keep churches open to

the public, so that those who choose to pray, are wel-

come to do so in the presence of our Eucharistic Lord,

while keeping a safe distance from one another and not

exceeding the 10-person limit. Our church will be open

daily from 11 am-2 pm and again from 5 pm - 8 pm for

personal prayer. Parishioners are asked to enter through

the front doors only and sign in and out on the prayer

register in the back of the church.

With public celebrations of the Sunday Mass canceled,

the faithful are encouraged to devote time to prayer,

observe Mass on television or the Internet, and pray the

Rosary along with other devotions. The Diocese co-

sponsors a televised Sunday Mass with the Archdiocese

of Washington. It takes place at the Basilica Shrine of the

Immaculate Conception in Washington and is available

at 10:30am on Sundays on two local TV stations as well

as online. Go to ArlingtonDiocese.org/TVMass for more

information or to view the Mass. In addition to the TV

Mass we are planning on having a video recorded at

OLQP of daily and Sunday Mass that will be available on

our Facebook page beginning soon with Fr. Tim, Fr. Mar-

tin, and Fr. Joe presiding at different masses. All non-

liturgical activities in the parish except the food pantry

are also canceled. For information about weddings, bap-

tisms, or funerals, please call the parish office.

EASTER FLOWER MEMORIALS

Easter Sunday Mass will be live streamed, if public Masses are

still suspended. The sanctuary will be decorated as usual, and

therefore, we invite you to remember a deceased family

member with an Easter Flower Memorial, to be published in

the Easter Sunday bulletin.

Please let us know by Monday, April 6, who you would like to

remember. You can do that by printing this form and mailing it

to the parish office, or by emailing the information to Christina

JUST A THOUGHT OR TWO… In today’s Gospel Jesus raises

his good friend, Lazarus, from the dead. The retelling of this event is meant to show forth the power Jesus has, even over death. Embedded in the story is also a story of love, Jesus’ love for Martha, Mary and Lazarus. This is not an amorphous love…a wishy-washy love of all people… but a particular love of particular persons. Perhaps it is meant to try and tell us of the particular love that God has for us…each one of us…a love which is uniquely for us individually. God knows us as individuals and loves us just as we are! Even in the midst of our brokenness, even in the midst of our sinfulness…God loves us! And it is that love for us that holds the power to raise us from the death of sin to new life. As much as Lent

is a penitential time, so too it is meant to be a time of healing…a time of preparation for our own resurrection. What will my resurrection story be this Easter? From what, is the love of God trying to raise me up? In the Gospel Jesus asked the people to “roll away the stone” so Lazarus could come out from his tomb, what stone am I being called to “roll away” so others may come out from their “tombs”? In the midst of the horror of this coronavirus pan-demic how can I show God’s love and care for others? How can I reach out to those who may be lonely and fearful? How might I be a loving and hopeful presence to them? Lenten Blessings, Fr. Tim

YOUTH MINISTRY -- We are working on details to meet virtu-

ally for daily as well as at our regular Sunday meet ups. Stay tu-

ned for details!

HAITI EASTER DRIVE - “Water is a cure-all. Water is everything.

You can’t get better without drinking lots of water, and you can’t drink water unless it’s clean.” -Josh Fox. We have access to clean water with the turn of a faucet. We rely on it to drink, cook, clean, wash clothes, brush our teeth, and much more. For the people in Medor, life is much different. There is no running water, so they collect water from streams and springs and must purify it at home for it to be safe to consume. Medor residents use these same streams and springs to bathe themselves and wash their clothes. This week, let’s try to limit our water usage to only what is abso-lutely essential. While doing so let’s remember our brothers and sisters in Medor and their quest for clean water. Donations for the Haiti Easter Drive help support Medor’s clean water program; donations help improve the health of the entire community.

FOOD PANTRY Needs food to continue to assist our neighbors in need! Without the monthly food drive, we are just getting by. Please drop off donations (cereal, mac and cheese, canned vegetables, dry noodles and canned pasta sauce) at the Ministry Center from 10am to 2pm or the Parish Office Building from 8:30am to 3:30pm. Thank you for whatever you are able to help with!

REUSE THOSE GROCERY BAGS! Please donate your plastic

and brown paper bags to the OLQP food pantry. We use them to package food and give the bags a second life before recycling. Thank you for working to reduce waste. Please drop them off during Ministry Center office hours 10am-2pm or to the Parish Office 8:30am-3:30pm.

dando a nuestros vecinos necesitados! Sin la colecta mensual de comida,

casi no podemos ayudar.

When I was a child, my father showed me a scar on his finger: a faint, white line acquired in some rough-and-tumble moment during his growing-up years. The story he told me about it did not come from his childhood, but from later, when he was an Air Force pilot and about to leave my mother and me for Vi-etnam.

As he headed off to the war, my fa-ther knew that pilots could be forced to bail out of their planes by enemy fire. He knew the risk, if that hap-pened, of being taken prisoner. And he knew that prisoners of war were sometimes forced by their captors to send coerced messages home, in-cluding false information or senti-ments. The war could come into their homes, in a sense, between them-selves and the ones they loved most.

So, my father got a ruler. He carefully measured the distance from the tip of his finger to that scar and gave my mother the measurement. A genuine letter, he told her, will begin exactly that distance from the top of the page: no more, no less. That letter is a letter from me, and you can trust what it says. Any other letter, you will have to know, comes to you from dire circumstances.

Now, this sort of thing makes an im-pression on a child. Perhaps it is one of the reasons that I have become a person who looks ahead, who pre-pares. In the present moment, though, it seems that we are all be-coming that sort of person, like it or not. In the midst of the present pan-demic, we are all finding ourselves—slowly or suddenly, with profound hesitation or with grim determina-tion—imagining circumstances that can only be described as dire. This is

a moment for all of us to ask what measures we should be taking and what conversations we should be having.

Here, the Christian tradition is a rich resource for us.

Calls to a certain form of readiness, indeed, stands at the heart of that tradition from the beginning. It ech-oes through the New Testament like an insistent drumbeat. It presses us to focus on what matters most and to leave aside quickly the things that don’t. In a sense, theascesis de-scribed by St. Paul as the form of the Christian life can be best thought of in this way.

We associate ascesis, and especially our own derivative, “asceticism,” with self-denial, but, in the Pauline vision, that is never an end in itself. Self-denial is, rather, a kind of train-ing. What we are aiming for is the spiritual athleticism that equips us to meet the demands that will come.

The image of a runner, in particular, fits with the way many of us are feel-ing now: poised at the starting block, muscles taut, eyes strained to look ahead of us, trying to imagine how we will finish this race. We are asking ourselves: Are we up to the task?

If we consider the form of this Chris-tian readiness, though, a fuller pic-ture emerges. Above all, we recall that the readiness to which we are called is not only the result of our own efforts. We are borne up by a power greater than our own. It is not simply steely-eyed determination that we need. It is surrender and co-operation with that which is greater than ourselves. The call to training is there, but so is the reminder that “it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good pur-

pose” (Phil 2:13). If, at this moment, we don’t feel quite ready, we can rest a bit in the knowledge that Someone else is working in us and through us, drawing us into plans that we may not even fully under-stand.

This readiness, furthermore, is not simply an individual matter. In a diffi-cult moment, we do have certain tasks as individuals, but this race is one that we will run together, carry-ing one another forward. The truth is that we are ready in varying ways, and we can bring our own readiness to the whole.

Just yesterday, my 11-year-old son and I ran two errands. We had some food to bring to a friend of a friend who was in need and could not get to the store. As we left, another friend texted to ask if we ourselves needed anything, and when I answered that we would love a little fresh fruit, she told us that we could come by any time. She had exactly what we need-ed. Together, we had enough.

We know something of what lies ahead of us. Other tests will only emerge as we go. We will have to do everything we can to be ready. We also have to remind ourselves, though, that we do not run alone. We will trust in God, and we will bear up one another. It is a moment to offer whatever we have: our skills, our resources, our time, our love. And yes, even our scars.
