The Field ClubGolf in Pinehurst
The genius of Frederick Law Olmsted’s designs included New York's Central Park and extended south to a quaint little walking villageand resort hotel, both known as Pinehurst, and located in the Sandhills area of central North Carolina. Nearby are the villages of Southern Pines and Aberdeen.
For well over a hundred years, golf and equine enthusiasts have enjoyed the benefits of this area’s gentle topography, stately pines, sandy soil and seasonable weather. While steeped in tradition, the genuine southern hospitality exuded by residents makes all who visit feel truly welcome.
Pinehurst, world renowned as the "Home of American Golf", will write another chapter of this area’s rich history in 2014, when for the first time in the same year, the Men’s and Women’s US Open Championships will be conducted over the same venue – Donald Ross’s famed # 2 at PinehurstRoss s famed # 2 at Pinehurst.
Ben Hogan won his first pro tournament at Pinehurst in 1940. Sam Snead, Byron Nelson and Cary Middlecoff won tournaments here. Arnold Palmer has been a regular competitor here since his college days at nearby Wake Forest. Payne Stewart won his second USGA Open here in 1999, just months before his untimely death. Michael Campbell held off a charging Tiger Woods to win by 2 shots in 2005.
Legendary Scottish course designer Donald Ross came to Pinehurst in 1900, redesigned Resort #1, then created #'s 2 ‐ 4 and stayed 48 years. In all, Ross designed or redesigned more than 400 others in North America but considered # 2 his home course, calling it "the fairest test of championship golf I have ever designed". Pine Needles and Mid Pines are nearby. Construction of new golf courses by the game's greatest architects has continued in the Sandhills area, with the current count at 45.
Pinehurst venues continue to host major professional and amateur golf championships. The Men’s North and South Amateur Championship is the longest consecutive‐running amateur golf championship in the United States. It began in 1900 as a means to foster good relations between geographic regions that only a generation earlier had battled in the Civil War and to generate publicity for a five‐year old resort named Pinehurst. Several former Champions are now golf legends; Walter Travis, Francis Ouimet, Billy Joe Patton Jack Nicklaus Curtis Strange Corey Pavin and Davis Love IIPatton, Jack Nicklaus, Curtis Strange, Corey Pavin and Davis Love II.
According to Richard Tufts of Pinehurst's founding family, the event’s mission is: "To provide an annual gathering of these who love the game, rather than a spectacle.”
