Double E Feed & Supply, 3 Years and Still Growing Strong

by Kristen McGurk

Anyone driving West on Ajo can’t help but notice the growth in Three Points businesses. As a longtime resident, I can say it’s been wonderful to be able to buy and support local(s) instead of driving all the way into town for so many things. One of those businesses being Double E Feed & Supply, located on the Southeast corner of Ajo and Antique Way. Owners Blake and Kaity Epley purchased the former Mountain Market in 2016 and brought back a much-needed feed store to the Three Points area. If you’re new to the neighborhood, Blake and Kaity are longtime residents, former 4-H and FFA members, and are raising their four young children right here in Three Points. On any given day, you might be greeted at the door by one of the kids bringing your mail, recommending which chicks to buy, or talking about their latest adventure. This small-town feel is one of the many things that keeps customers coming back.

When they opened their store in 2016, they focused on general livestock needs, but they always knew they wanted to offer more product variety and other services to their customers. Over the last 3 years, they have added mailbox rentals, U-Haul Truck and Trailer rentals, and propane. Although hay and livestock feed are their bread and butter they also carry specialty feeds, organic feed, pet supplies, tack and ropes . They continue their support of local vendors and artisans by stocking honey, handcrafted lotion, soaps, candles and more. The community support does not stop at the cash register, it continues through their support of the local youth programs.

With Blake and Kaity’s extensive knowledge due to their 4-H/FFA experience, don’t be surprised when you stop in on a weekend and find 4-H/FFA groups attending a feed or clipping clinic, having a meeting, or getting tailored feed advice. Having such a large piece of

property allows 4-H groups to have meetings with their animals, and receive hands on advice right here in our own neighborhood.

Double E Feed & Supply is not showing any signs of slowing down. This Fall we’ll see the return of the great Farmer’s Markets and Swap Meets, along with multi-species shot and educational clinics . They will continue their exceptional service to their wide range of customers spanning from Three Points and Sells to Arivaca and Sasabe and Picture Rocks too. If you’re not already a customer, be sure to stop in and check them out. As Three Points businesses grow let’s show our support and continue to shop local and support local families.

One Stop Meat Marketby Lisa Duqmaq

If you've had a chance to stop by One Stop Meat Market, you may have met the owner, Mario. He will always greet you with a smile, has a great personality, and loves people.

Before finding his place in Three Points, over the years, Mario has run several businesses in Tucson. From convenience stores, a meat market, to restaurants. Bringing convenience to communities is his passion, and when he saw a great need for fresh meat and produce in Three Points and surrounding areas, he knew Three Points was the place for him.

He didn't stop there! Since opening, he has brought his love for cooking to all of us. He sells one of the best philly cheesesteak sandwiches in all of Arizona. From fried cod, fried chicken strips, fried shrimp, carne asada tacos, shrimp tacos, chicken wings, and appetizers, you and your family are are sure to love.

Just recently, a drive thru was opened for added convenience. This is a big help for those who are ill, those who struggle walking, families with children who just want to get in and out, those with pets in the car, or those who just want to call in their food order and pick it up in the drive thru. In addition, he's now offering delivery.

The One Stop Meat Market has been well embraced by the Three Points community, and Mario is very grateful to have your support and do what he's always loved doing.

History of Altar Valley School District Part 1Profile of Altar Valley School District Part 2

By Pat King & Diana Logan

In 1934, a new school house was built with the help of federal money, and the work was done by the W.P.A. This site is of the current Middle Middle School.

So encouraged were the people of the district by the progress of the school that, with the help of the county, some 200 trees were planted on the school grounds.  The county agent brought a bucket of rocks and threw them in the air, saying that trees were to be planted where the rocks fell as nature never planted in a straight row.  However, even this gallant gesture to improve the school grounds failed, for the young man left in charge of watering the trees over the summer neglected his duties and all the trees died.  (1481)

In 1938, 35 children attended the Three Points School.  They came from surrounding ranches such as Ferguson, Robles, Tortuga, Soto and mines such as Banner, Big Johnnie, and Yellow Bird.  However, by 1940 enrollment took such a drastic plunge that school had to be closed for a year.

1941 saw the school opening again with the return of Mrs. McGowan who had remarried and was now Mrs. Dill.  Mrs. Mary Dill remained teaching in the district until her retirement in 1961. At that time the school was enlarged and the name was changed to honor the long-time teacher. (Is this enlarged school the front building of the middle school? I think her picture hangs here)

Again in 1954, student numbers plunged to only six students but the school hung on and numbers gradually began to rise.  In 1974 there were 101 students and 1979-80 the number soared to 205 students.

Portable buildings were brought in to handle the overcrowding, again in 1982 more portable buildings were purchased and by the end of 1986 the number was up to 358.

Meetings were held to determine what could be done.   Many ideas were brought forward and accepted or rejected.   Finally, it was decided to hold a bond election.   In 1986 a bond election passed and a middle school, administrative offices, maintenance building and library were built on the main campus  to replace the portables.  There was not enough money to construct any kind of gymnasium but basketball courts were poured.  Eventually, through a grant we were able to enclose the basketball courts.  1375

Enter the 1990’s and enrollment continued to climb.  More classrooms were needed and the community responded by again passing a bond along with a newly organized State Facilities Board which allowed us to build Robles Elementary in 2004.  We had wanted to build a middle school on the new site but the Facilities Board turned it down as there was not enough state funding.   A metal building was constructed for the Robles Elementary classes. Superintendent Doug Roe said, “It is not what the building looks like on the outside, but it is what is happening inside which counts”.

The district first sent high school students to Cholla, when their population grew too big the district worked with Sunnyside to send the high school students there.   (The

children could go wherever the parent wanted but the district ran a bus to that high school.) Sunnyside then, experienced overcrowding and Flowing Wells had just built their high school and were agreeable to accept our students.

Later, a number of parents asked if the district would consider also bussing to Marana.   After studying the number of students the district agreed.

This school has seen many wonderful, successful students pass through our doors.  We have seen amazing teachers who were instrumental in encouraging students to go on to become teachers, business men and women, members of the military, law enforcement, medical professionals, clergy and just good people.  As I meet many who were students when my children attended Altar Valley, they now have children and are productive members of our community.   What a wonderful legacy and tradition to pass on to our students now attending this little school.

We are confident that this will be an amazing year to be a Bobcat at Robles Elementary!

The Power of MARVEL at Roblesby Rosalinda Rodriguez, Robles Elementary Principal

The Robles Bobcats had a great first month of school! The first day of school they walked into Robles through the red carpet and charged their superpowers by getting a picture on the city skyline with their superhero masks. This year the Robles staff spent the summer also recharging their super teaching powers and came determined and focused on MARVEL.

We are delighted to have our Bobcats back, and we started this month with an average of 94% attendance. Several classes earned bobcat bucks for having 100% of the class in attendance.

This year we are making sure that our partnership with Robles families is stronger than ever, and we are communicating with them in multiple ways. We have our gold family and teacher communicator folder that we use to send notes home, Class Dojo, district-wide Facebook, text and call autodial, and teachers’ weekly newsletters.

The Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports started strong with multiple peace days (days without discipline referrals) that we have celebrated with our students. Robles had our PBIS and Be Kind Expectations Kick off Assembly to learn and practice being Respectful, Open-Minded, Accountable, Responsible, and the importance of being kind to others. We are proud of our Robles Bobcats!

Here are 9 helpful tips to help your students have a successful year:• Attend Parent-Teacher conferences and other events.•·Visit the School and Its Website to stay up to date on events.•·Support homework expectations, they create good study habits.

Altar Valley School District News

Support the Community and Three Points Children

Jack E. Hollis

I am supporting my community and enhancing the possibilities for the children that live in the Three Points area by voting for the budget override for Altar Valley schools. Even though I do not have children in school, I feel it is my responsibility to do everything possible to provide the necessary resources for every child to have programs that will help them succeed.

A recent graduate of Altar Valley (and Flowing Wells high school) who is now enrolled at the Air Force academy told me how much her

experience at Altar Valley continues to help her in her pursuits in higher education. She said the extracurricular activities, in particular, gave her the confidence to participate in similar programs at the academy.

I have visited Altar Valley schools on numerous occasions and have always been amazed by level of commitment and creativity exhibited in such a small and an off the beaten path school.

It seems like such a small “ask” to pass the override and keep the children of Three Points on equal footing with children in larger school districts.

Voting YES for the OVERRIDE is Common Sense for the Common Good

Claudia Heath, Altar Valley School District Retired Language Arts Teacher

Of course, the OVERRIDE for the ALTAR VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT WILL PASS! I predict the majority of Three Points residents will vote YES to the OVERRIDE for our Altar Valley School District, no matter how our viewpoints may differ. Why?

First of all, because we care about or kids. If we vote no, we are hurting kids, no matter how flawed we think our government is.

Secondly, we know a bargain when we see it. For slightly less than $5.00 a month, we property owners get free kindergarten for the kids, smaller classrooms for all students, free sports and drama programs for the kids after school, and competitive teacher salaries.

Third reason, it’s not a tax increase, just a continuation of a tax that even a retired teacher like me can afford.

I urge all Three Points citizens to vote Yes for the Override: yes to kids, yes to common sense, and yes because it is the right thing to do!
