Prayer for Labor Day On this weekend, when we rest from our usual labors, loving Father, we pray for all who shoulder the tasks of human labor—in the marketplace, in factories and offices, in the professions, and in family living. We thank you, Lord, for

the gift and opportunity of work; may our efforts always be pure of heart, for the good of others and the glory of your name. We lift up to you all who long for just employment and those who work to defend the rights and needs of

workers everywhere. May those of us who are now retired always remember that we still make a valuable

RCIA is the name we give to the process that guides people in their

decision to enjoy full communion with the Catholic Church. It stands for

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS and is composed of a

series of sessions bringing people together to experience the prayer life

of the Church as well as to learn about its doctrines and teachings.

Using the Bible, the Sacred Liturgy as well as the Catechism of the

Catholic Church, participants prepare themselves to receive the

sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist. The sessions

begin on September 14 and conclude with the celebration Christ’s death

and resurrection at Easter. If you are interested in knowing more,

The temporary partition is down! Well, almost. W e are getting ready for our 200th Anniversary Celebration on November 22, 2015

To the left is a rendering of the church nave with the tempo-rary partition being disassembled. The partition created a space behind it where construction could occur while the rest of the church was open for worship. Now the partition is reduced down to about ten feet from the floor and will re-main this way for a couple of weeks when the entire struc-ture is removed.

Update

As part of a comprehensive renovation of the church, the archi-tects (Acheson Doyle Associates) and our liturgical designer (Rolf Rohn Design) have reported that we are on schedule for the completion of major portions of the work including the replacing of the Tabernacle to its original position in the center of the sanctuary, a restoration of the hand-painted statues of the Apostles surrounding the altar, a new chapel for daily Mass (Alta Gracia), an elevator for the disabled, a new heating sys-tem and air conditioning, new frames for the stained glass windows, improved lighting and a new glass wall in the narthex (foyer) that will expand the space and make it more suitable for functions.

Wall and Ceiling With the plaster ceiling and walls are being primed for painting giving them a white appearance. The next step will be the

application of paint that simulates the original color of the walls and which were determined taking tests of chips found below six layers of paint.

Stained Glass Windows

The stained glass windows have all been temporarily removed in order for them to be restored. The complete restoration of all the windows will be accomplished next year. In the meantime, the “rose window” over the sanctuary is scheduled to be restored on October 3. In addition,

we expect four other windows on the west side of the church to be installed as well.

Steps & Ramp Work has begun on replacing the steps into the church. Please be patient with the inconvenience.

We will introduce a permanent ramp for mobility impaired people.

Stone Floors The existing terrazzo flooring had to be removed. It will be replaced with real stone (travertine)

throughout the church and catacombs.

Pews The refurbished pews will be brought back into the church with new kneelers. The original memorial plaques will be intact.

MUSIC AT THE BASILICA

MUSIC FOR THE TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

As the choir and schola return from summer break in the next couple weeks, it is time to reflect on their role in liturgy. The General Instruction on the Roman Missal contains the rubrics and instructions for the celebration of Mass. In the section Particular Ministries (GIRM #103), the role of the schola or choir is described:

Among the faithful, the schola cantorum or choir exercises its own liturgical function, its place being to take care that the parts proper to it, in keeping with the different genres of chant, are properly carried out and to foster the active participation of the faithful by means of singing. What is said about the schola cantorum [choir] also applies with due regard for the relevant norms, to other musicians, and especially the organist.

So, the choir has a definite purpose at liturgy. The choir's role in the Roman rite is different from the typical non-liturgical Protestant model wherein the choir offers "an anthem" at a particular point in the service. Rather, the documents primarily envision the choir evolving out of a Roman model, wherein a schola (a group of singers, often in unison) offered various chants of the Mass proper (Introit, Gradual, Offertory, Communion, etc.). Ideally, in addition to singing an anthem alone, the choir should alternate with the congregation in the Proper of the Mass and may even (particularly in the instances above) legit-imately sing in place of the congregation.

There are liturgists and musicians, taking as their reference the first half of #103, who posit that there are two categories of music for Mass, that correctly sung by the schola (choir) and that sung by the con-gregation. Any of these could be sung in English or in Latin. While this seems, from our current "American" perspective to be rather radical, it has solid liturgical precedent. Look, for example, at what's contained in the official "choir book" of the Church, the [Graduale Romanum]: Introit, Gradual, Alleluia, Offertory, Communion. Here, we take a balanced perspective, seeking to bridge the choral and congregational parts in an organic, pastoral fashion. ____________________________________________________________________________________________

UPCOMING EVENTS

Continued Schola Recruitment If you are interested in joining the Schola for the Fall, please say hello to Joshua or Jared after the 12:45 PM or 7:00 PM Mass and we can answer any questions you have. BASILICA SCHOLA For the summer, our Schola is on break, singing only once a month at Vespers; they will return in September. Do consider contributing your talents to the Schola; contact Joshua South, our Cantor, at [email protected]. Hear our latest recording, available on iTunes, and find out more about the music ministry at http://oldcathedral.org/music. It is a great way to enhance your spiritual life, meet fellow parishioners, and deepen your understanding of the tradition.
