A longstanding Parowantradition will look very differ-ent this year.

Traditionally, January hasmarked the annual ParowanBirthday Celebration, whichincludes the Parowan BirthdayBall, but social distancing con-siderations have prompted anew approach to this com-memoration of the city’s heri-tage in 2021. In lieu of the in-person Birthday Ball, this yearParowan will celebrate decadesof performances at its historicAladdin Theatre through“Parowan Sings,” a virtualmusical revue paying homageto past musical theater produc-tions and featuring local talent.

“Parowan Sings” is beingfilmed in advance at theAladdin Theatre in Parowan,with social distancing andsafety practices strictly ob-served to protect the perform-ers and crew. Tales Of TheOld West

It should come as no greatsurprise nor revelation that themining towns of the west werenot known for their law-abidingresidents. The fact is, however,that most of these towns werepeopled with rather conservativeindividuals who believed thatcommunities should be free ofhooligans, ruffians, and “nare-do-wells.”

Once a camp established it-self as a “town” with a counsel,mayor and some semblance ofan organized community, thenext step, naturally, was the ad-dition of a “marshal,” a “sher-iff,” or a “constable.”

Very seldom were thesemen officially recognized byother law officers in the non-mining sections of a county orstate. They were “exofficial” asfar as any governmental agencywas concerned, and could en-force the law as they saw fit.

The problem usually boileddown to the fact that because ofthe “openness” of these towns,no outside agency would dare toexercise the administration ofstate or territory law, or evencounty or municipal statutes forfear of being shot, stabbed, orbeat to a pulp when entering theconfines of a mining town or dis-trict.

Silver Reef, in WashingtonCounty, Utah was a rare excep-tion. But even here action by acounty sheriff or deputy, or even

a federal marshal, was fairly un-common and exercised onlywhen called upon by the town’ssheriff/marshal. It meant that

Silver Reef was a fairly “open”town in a Mormon controlledcounty of Washington.

This resulted in many“nuisances” by the rowdies.One of these problems was new-comers coming into the areaclaiming they were representingwealthy speculators. Thesecons would spread the wordaround town that they could ad-vance money and credit to thoseholding legitimate claims. Theyoften succeeded in getting minesbonded to themselves for a pe-riod of three to six months.They would then approachsomeone new in town and en-tice them to buy into such bondsthrough partnerships. All theyhad to do was advance thebondsman money enough tokeep the rascal going for amonth or so.

Silver Reef was never in-corporated and the lack of suf-ficient law enforcement addedto the problem.

In 1881 and 82 a gang ofthugs began operating in Silver

Reef. They would rob miner’scabins by day while the menwere at work in the mines. Atnight they would spend their lute

in extreme drinking andgambling.

The local newspaper,The Miner, reported: “Ithas come to the pointwhere almost nightly andeven in broad daylightpeaceable citizens are bush-

whacked and assaulted for theslightest cause or provocation.Lawlessness and hoodlumism gounrestrained. The officers lackeither the courage or incentiveto act.”

The paper continued in itscampaign: “Almost daily andnightly occurrences of the mostdisgraceful and violent charac-ter are witnessed upon ourstreets and about our popularresorts. Life and property seemat the mercy of the lawless class,who in open day plunder unpro-tected dwellings and resort tounrestrained violence, and makenight a bedlam scene of blood-shed and riot.”

You haveseen how easy the baking pow-der biscuits were to make, wellnow is your chance to show yourfamily and friends that you areindeed a bread maker and cancome up with a variety of loavesin no time at all! The following isa basic quick bread recipe. Thisrecipe can be tweaked and madeinto many different kinds of sweetbreads. I learned these tricks frommy Mom. She used what was in

her pantry and so each time shebaked, we had something a little

different. The recipe below isfor the basic walnut or pecanquick bread. During the nextfew weeks, I will school you onhow to tweak this recipe to comeup with almost any flavor orvariety you desire. Have funand great tasting!

Nutty Quick Bread1 ¾ cups flour1 ¼ tsp. baking powder½ tsp. cinnamon½ tsp. salt (I like Kosher)2 large eggs or 3 medium

eggs1 cup sour cream3/4 cup sugar½ cup canola oil1 tsp. vanilla extract1 cup chopped nuts, your

choiceHeat oven to 350 degrees.

Coat an 8 ½ x 4 1/2 inch loafpan with cooking spray. Whisktogether the flour, baking pow-der, cinnamon and salt in a largebowl. Whisk together the eggs,sour cream, sugar, oil and va-

nilla in another large bowl.Gradually add the flour mixtureinto the egg mixture, stirring un-til just incorporated. Fold in thenuts. Pour batter into pans.Bake until golden brown and atoothpick inserted into the cen-ter comes out clean. This cantake up to 50-60 minutes. Letcool for 10 minutes and trans-fer to a cooling rack. For miniloaves, divide the batter intothree 5x3 in. loaf pans and bakeaccordingly.

Rumors and gossip were putto rest as the Finland caught up onAugust 4th with a destroyer for es-cort. The convoy had not beenslowed down and their journey wasstill scheduled to end on August 7th

Gov. Spencer J. Cox wasthe first person to ditch paper en-velopes and cash at Snow Can-yon State Park and use ParksPass,a new automated payment sys-tem in the works that will stream-line payment at Utah’s state parks.

A collaboration among theUtah Division of Parks and Rec-reation, industry experts andSouthern Utah University andDixie State University students,the mobile app allows visitors topurchase day-use passes electroni-cally even before entering thepark.

“State Parks took an inno-vative approach and looked toSouthern Utah universities andcolleges to create a mobile solu-tion to buying passes, technologyfor quicker park access and real-time capacity data for both thevisitor and park management,”Jason Pitts, SUU research fellowfor outdoor pathways, said.“Now, for the first time ever, youcan ‘know before you go.’”

An early preview can beseen at parkspass.utah.gov. Thefull mobile experience will be op-erational at Snow Canyon StatePark, Sand Hollow State Park,Quail Creek State Park, and Gun-lock State Park over the comingmonths. ParksPass signs and au-tomated scanning technology willbe installed at the parks, whichwill speed up entry into the park.The app also provides visitors withtrail maps and identifies amenitiesoffered at the parks.

As I write this, the nationis understandably in shock overthe besieging of the capitol build-ing during debate about certify-ing the electoral votes that havedetermined that Joe Biden willbecome president. At this point(hopefully more information willbe forthcoming identifying thosewho participated) it looks like,while many protestors wereTrump supporters, some werenot and were specifically thereto commit vandalism and showcontempt for our Constitutionalprocesses and our law-makersand law enforcers. While Istrongly believe in the right toprotest and to seek redress fromthe government for grievances,I do not believe that anyone hasthe right to use violence or in-timidation to get their way – nomatter what side of a debate theyare on.

Whether some of these“protesters” had as a goal to de-rail the debate about certifyingvotes or not will hopefully be-come clear as investigations con-tinue. If they instead hoped tocreate an atmosphere wherechallenging the votes would suc-ceed, they created exactly theopposite effect. While manycongress-people were willing toentertain the idea that some elec-tors were chosen incorrectly, themood after the storming of thecapitol went directly the otherway. Many of our legislatorsdecided that they could not sup-port that effort because of at-

tempted intimidation by themob. They wanted no part ofbeing considered aligned withthe lawless and disrespectful ac-tions of those invaders.

All that being said, most ofus are totally fed up with theconstant bickering, demonizingand generally negative approachto national policy that has char-acterized those in both majorparties and on both sides in theconservative/liberal cultures thathas held sway over the last de-cade and especially this last year.Many people are happy tochange presidents, not becausethey believe the new presidentwill work for laws and policiesthey agree with, but simply be-cause they are tired of the caus-tic and obnoxious statementsthat have come from the previ-ous leadership and the similarresponses to him from the me-dia and his opponents.

We will be hearing a rep-etitious and consistent call to“get along” and unite as a na-tion in the days ahead. I am to-tally in favor of more kindness,understanding, fairness andthoughtful consideration. I amagainst the kind of villainizationand denigration of those whodon’t agree with one side or theother that we have been seeing.In working towards a more civilsociety and better communica-tion, there is one thing I stronglyfeel we must do.

Peace is not the goal at allcosts. If it were, we would havesurrendered to Germany, al-lowed terrorists to do whateverthey wanted or given into theirevery whim and given up all ourfreedoms to one or the other ofthe many special interests or pro-testors that exist.

I believe in compromise. Iam happy to change how I docertain things in order to help oth-ers feel safe or have more oppor-tunities for an even playing field.I wear a mask in public placeseven though I am not sure howeffective it is. I encourage thosewho enter my store to also puton a mask, but I don’t require itbefore talking with them. Accom-modating the needs or fears ofothers is a generous and usuallyworthy thing to do.

HOWEVER, I do not be-lieve in compromising our stan-dards and principles. Being dis-honest to make someone elsehappy is not acceptable. Surren-dering freedoms and rights (es-pecially unalienable rights such aslife, liberty, control of property,etc.) is not a valid or effectiveway to keep the peace. Those thatwould ask such things will neverbe happy until they control uscompletely and make us behaveas though we agree with their at-titudes and opinions. The right tofree exercise of my religion andconscience, ownership and use ofweapons, freedom of assemblyand speech and even peacefulprotest are all lines in the sandthat we should never allow any-one to cross with impunity. Wemust stand for what we care aboutor we will lose it. I believe wecan almost always do so withoutviolence, anger or denigration ofothers. Hopefully, that is the kindof peace we will find.
