Vocabulary - loom

Loom – come into view in an indistinct form

The mountain loomed in the distance.

Vocabulary - exclusive

Exclusive – snobbish; accepting of only a select few

They belonged to an exclusive club; you need to be invited to be a member.

Vocabulary - throng

Throng - crowd

There was a throng of people waiting for the popular concert to begin.

Vocabulary - mohair

Mohair – kind of soft goat-hair fabric

The woman has a mohair blanket that was given to her.

Vocabulary - madras

Madras – kind of fine cotton cloth, usually with a plaid pattern

The boys all wore madras shirts.

Vocabulary - billowing

Billowing – rolling like waves

The clouds were billowing in the sky.

Theorem – statement to be proved

Their math homework was to prove the theorem using the equations.

Equation – statement of equal value on both sides

The teacher gave the students numbers to fill in and solve the equation.

Distributive – having to do with a law of multiplication

They practices using the distributive property while doing their math homework.

Factor – express as a product of two or more numbers

The numbers 1, 2, 5, and 10 are factors of 10.

Jostling – shoving; pushing

The people were jostling each other to get to the free food.

Vocabulary - gaudy

Gaudy – very showy

These fingernails are extremely gaudy.

Vocabulary - liberal

Liberal – one who favors fairness and reform

Liberal politicians usually push for change in the country to meet the needs. They are most often Democrats.

Vocabulary - cynical

Cynical – doubting; lacking faith and trust

Cynical people are usually very negative.

Vocabulary - irrational

Irrational – unreasonable; senseless

The man behaved in an irrational way when he hid all of his money in a hole in the backyard.

Fluted - grooved

This cup has fluted sides.

Vocabulary - scrolled

Scrolled – decorated by a spiral design

This ring has a scrolled design.

Vocabulary - sarcastic

Sarcastic – mocking; scornful; bitter

Sarcastic talk can be funny, but it can also be mean and hurtful.

Malicious – cruel; with ill will

He got a malicious virus on his computer.

Vocabulary - frenzied

Frenzied – frantic; very excited

This frenzied programmer is having trouble meeting his deadline.

The things Laura sees including last year’s calendar show that Miss Merrill doesn’t care about providing a stimulating environment for learning. She conducts the class in a mechanical fashion. She doesn’t correct the rude comments the class makes but she severely criticizes Rachel for being unprepared.
