“My son was the peanut I raised. With my whole heart, my life’s goal was to protect and
nurture him. Even the concept of having his own rifle rattled me. One of my challenges
has been to treat him as the man he is now and to let go! A tall order for a mom under
any circumstances.” - from a military Mom interviewed for Life After Deployment -

SUNY Geneseo is one of the few area colleges and universities to win the Rochester Business Journal’s Environ-
mental Leadership Award. The College community has demonstrated a significant commitment to environ-
mental and conservation issues that will ultimately have a positive impact on the environment. After submit-
ting descriptions of the actions, programs and measurable results of our commitment to the environment and
making our community a healthier place, the College was selected to receive the 2010 Environmental Lead-
ership Award in the Resource Reduction category.
A sampling of the many resource reduction programs the College has implemented includes the following:
• 2001— major upgrade to the campus power plant resulted in substantial energy savings
• Purchasing policy requires purchasing only Energy Star certified products
• Set back heat/cooling during College breaks and holidays
• Replaced windows in older buildings
• Installed occupancy sensors for lighting in several buildings
• Students sponsor an annual “Kill-a-watt” dorm energy saving contest
• Double-side printing is the default on campus printers
• Campus construction will be built to a minimum LEED Silver standard
• Alternative energy- beginning in 2008 the College purchased 15% of its electricity from renewable resources
• Geothermal energy was used in the construction of Seneca Hall and will be used in the Doty building
SUNY Geneseo was featured in an article in the Special Report
section of the Rochester Business Journal’s April 9, 2010 issue. Ad-
ditionally, some members of the Environmental Sustainability
Committee attended the Environmental Leadership Symposium
and Awards program sponsored by Rochester Business Journal,
RIT Golisano Institute for Sustainability, and Greater Rochester En-
terprise to receive the award on April 13, 2010. As noted on the
award, the picture was painted by Genny C, an African elephant
at the Seneca Park Zoo.

Pride, Perseverance, and Patriotism— George F. Stooks
As we close out the 2009-
2010 academic year in a time of
financial turmoil within the state
and conflict around the world,
these three words come to mind to
describe our work force. It was truly
moving to see how many of our
staff has family members serving
our country. If you spend any time
among the Facilities staff their patri-
otism and support of our troops is
clearly evident. Beyond the dis-
plays of pride, Facilities staff gathers
much needed and appreciated
“care packages” to be sent to our
troops on a regular basis.
Focusing on our staff and
their service to campus is where
pride and perseverance comes
into play. The cyclical nature of the
College campus brings visitors from
all points of the state and beyond.
Among these visitors over the past
year have been peers from within
Facilities on other campuses. The
thread of the comments passed on
to our Facilities staff has been,
“What a beautiful and clean cam-
pus.” I know in my travels, when
people who know Geneseo make
the connection, I hear similar com-
ments and compliments. Through
hard budget times the pride and
perseverance of our Facilities staff
continues to stay strong, and it
shows on a daily basis.
After commencement we
launch into summer mode where
our staff roll up their sleeves and
take on the task of preparing cam-
pus for the new academic year.
This is a perfect time for a public
“THANK YOU” to them for all they
do, for the pride they take in their
work and the standards of cleanli-
ness, condition, and appearance
to which our gem of a campus is
known for.
145 custodial labor hours were used to prepare the College Union for the Presi-
dent’s Annual Donor Dinner. In light of the current budget constraints, over 90%
of the work was accomplished on regular time; an astounding feat when you
consider the volume of work that is required on any one day to keep the cam-
pus buildings in top shape! Among the tasks completed were window washing
inside and out, the chandeliers and lights were cleaned and bulbs replaced, all
walls were cleaned, floors scrubbed, entries cleaned and walk off mats sham-
pooed. Furniture, including the 35 tables and 280 chairs used for the dinner,
was cleaned. The 23 Custodians working on the event were assisted by the
Moving Crew, and several individuals from Grounds in the preparations.
On April 1, 2010 Facilities Services was able to fill two vacant positions.
Timothy Carey joined us as a Maintenance Assistant working in the North Quad Residence
Halls with Tim Freas. Tim came from the Industry School in Rush, NY where he worked main-
tenance as well as filling in as vocational instructor and a youth development aide.
David Shultz joined us as a Plant Utilities Assistant in the Heating Plant.
David came to SUNY Geneseo from the private sector where he has
worked for over 20 years in HVAC. David took the Civil Service test and scored well enough
to be in the top pool for the position.
Please help us in welcoming Tim and Dave to our campus !!!

Facilities Services and the Environ-
mental Sustainability Task Force Com-
mittee is assisting with GEO’s
(Geneseo Environmental Organiza-
tion) student group initiatives to in-
crease awareness of bottled water
effects on the environment as well as
documented health effects caused by
drinking bottled water. GEO’s cam-
paign “Think Outside the Bottle” en-
courages people to use refillable bot-
tles. The “gooseneck” water dispenser
will allow folks to re-fill their bottles eas-
ily. The dispensers will be installed on
various drinking fountains throughout
the academic buildings. Look for these
new dispensers in your location soon!

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Mania - SUNY Geneseo
For the first time SUNY Geneseo participated in the Recycle Mania competi-
tion. Comprised of a ten-week friendly competition, Recycle Mania provides
benchmarking tools for the college and promotes waste reduction activities in
campus communities. Over 607 schools across America registered to compete
this year. Geneseo focused on the Waste Minimization category (least amount
of trash per capita) as it best coincides with our values of sustainability.
The results are calculated by taking the volume of acceptable recyclables,
adding it to the volume of trash, and dividing this number with the population
figure (students, staff and faculty).
The average amount of waste at Geneseo is 4.63 pounds/person/week. Ac-
cording to the Clean Air Council, the national average is 4.39 pounds. The Col-
lege ranked 4th out of 19 New York State schools. Of the SUNY schools we were
second only to Brockport. In the National competition Geneseo ranked 84th out
of 199. For more information visit http://www.recyclemaniacs.org
Donna Hanrahan, Environmental Sustainability Intern, was instrumental in organiz-
ing this year’s competition. Donna, fellow student Ellis Baehr, and Becky Steward
from CAS all played an important role in making this year’s competition some-
thing to be proud of. Donna stated it well: “Geneseo is becoming increasingly
more environmentally conscious each semester...”

The Facilities Services team lost
our friend and co-worker, Timothy
Bishop on Wednesday, April 14,
2010. Tim, plagued in recent years
with many health issues appeared
to be on the path to recovery
when he passed away suddenly. Tim worked
in the Core Shop as an electrician for the past
7 years, he also served our Country in the Air
Force, stationed in California. He was well
liked and respected by his co-workers who will
miss his electrical expertise and quick-witted
humor.

Facilities Planning & Construction has planned numerous pro-
jects for the summer construction season. Most of the projects
will be completed by late fall, while the DOTY Building Renova-
tion will continue on for a number of years. While most of this
summer’s work impacts the north side residence halls, there will
be evidence of construction throughout the
campus! For more information visit
http://go.geneseo.edu/planning
As always, questions regarding construction can
be addressed to Facilities Planning & Construc-
tion at 5511.
