The Eye of the World

The Eye of the World is a great book. Filled to the brim with adventure,

excitement, and humor, The Eye of the World is a great read.

The author of The Eye of the World is Robert Jordan. He has written several

major fantasy series. The Eye of the World is the first book in the ten book series called

The Wheel of Time.

The main characters in The Eye of the World are what make the book so good.

Each of the main characters had a unique personality that clearly distinguished them from

others.

Rand Al’Thor, Mat Cauthron, and Perrin Aybara shared the role of being the main

character. The three teenage boys lived in a small village called the Two Rivers. Rand

was a natural leader who always tried to do the right thing. He was taller than average,

and his reddish hair was a contrast to the brown hair that almost everyone else in the

village had. Perrin was a boy who had a heart of gold. He was very big and strong, so he

always moved slowly so that he would not hurt anybody by accident. He also liked to

think things out and make logical decisions. Because of that, some people thought him to

be mentally impaired, but that judgment was not true. Mat’s character was the opposite

of Perrin’s. Mat was a boy full of mischief. He always was pulling pranks and

snickering at any little joke that was made. His decisions were made on the spot without

any thought put into them, which sometimes led him into trouble from elder people. He

also managed to make a fool out of himself in front of girls, who turned their cheek when

they saw his true character. Mat also was greedier than his friends, which sometimes led

him trying to get prizes or money whenever he could. Later in the story, his greediness

would work against him and nearly kill him. One day, the three boys were met by a

woman named Moiraine. Accompanying her was a man named Lan. Moiraine warned

the boys that they were in grave danger, and that they were wanted by the Dark One, who

was the most evil being in the world. They were given a day to pack their things before

they were to be whisked away by Moiraine and Lan. That night, the boys split paths and

returned to their separate houses. Rand lived alone with his father about a mile away

from the town on a farm. That night, their house was ambushed by trollocs. Creatures of

pure evil, trollocs were part animal and part human. Their forms were huge and

muscular, but their face was grotesquely shaped and more often than not had horns

jutting out from the head. Their only purpose in life was to kill. Rand jumped outside in

barely enough time to avoid death. While he hid outside, his father, Tam, heroically

battled the minions of evil with a sword. He managed to kill the trollocs, but he was

knocked unconscious in the process. Rand journeyed back inside and brought his father

to the safety of the woods. Once there, Rand realized that he needed blankets and food to

nourish his sick father. He went back inside, hoping no trollocs would find him. The

house was empty of living things, but Rand found Tam’s sword and buckled it onto his

belt just in case. He found the necessary supplies, and made his way to the door. Rand

was shocked to see a trolloc barring the way. In an instant, Rand had the sword in his

hands. The trolloc leapt at him, and Rand pushed forward. The trolloc was dead before

he hit the ground. Rand gathered himself and eventually brought Tam, still unconscious,

back to town where he was to be healed. The town was also attacked by trollocs, and

there he learned that Moiraine was an Aes Sedai. Aes Sedai were women that could

channel a force called the One Power and do incredible things such as shoot fire from

their hands or make lighting hit enemies. She, along with Lan, had rescued the entire

town population from being slaughtered. Moiraine quickly gathered Rand, Mat, and

Perrin. They climbed onto horses and rode off into the hills, to wherever Moiraine

wanted them to go.

During the adventures of the three boys, many good words were used. Ten

excellent words are: dissuade, dappled, happenstance, indistinct, hobbles, impassive,

wryly, interspersed, melded, and gritty. Dissuade, pronounced dis!

suade, means to talk

or persuade somebody out of doing something. Dappled, pronounced dap!pled, is a

mottled or spotted marking. Happenstance, pronounced hap!pen!stance, is a

circumstance that can only happen by chance. Indistinct, pronounced in!dis!tinct, means

that something is hard to make out. Hobbles, pronounced hob!bles, are devices fastened

around the legs of a horse to impair movement, but not terminate it. Impassive,

pronounced just how it looks, means expressionless. Wryly, pronounced wry!ly, means

dryly humorous, often with a touch of irony. Interspersed, pronounced in!ter!spersed,

means to distribute among other things at intervals. Melded, pronounced meld!ed,

means to display or declare a card combination. Gritty, pronounced grit!ty, means that

an object is covered in large granules of dirt or other soils.

The Eye of the World took place in a fictional world. The travels of the three

boys led them to a variety of towns and areas of the world which ranged from massive

cities to remote villages.

had developed a link to him. If the dagger was stolen, the link would wear at Matt and

kill him. If he kept the dagger, he would die, also. Fortunately for Matt, Moiraine sent

for help from her fellow Aes Sedai friends. After the experience, Matt learned to listen to

Moiraine, as she had more life experience than he.

I did not like when Matt stole the dagger from Shadgar Logath. He should have

listened to the wise Aes Sedai and not taken the evil piece of weaponry. Once he had it

in his possession, Matt began a race for his life. He needed to reach more Aes Sedai for

help before the dagger consumed him.

There were five major events in The Eye of the World. First, Moiraine found

Matt, Rand, and Perrin and informed them of the danger they were in. The boys found

themselves in their first trolloc fight, and then rode away from the Two Rivers.

The second event was traveling to Shadgar Logath. With trollocs hot on their

tracks, the traveling party had to find a place that the evil beings were scared to enter.

Shadgar Logath was their only option. Once there, Matt stole the dagger. The group was

going to leave when the pursuing trollocs gathered the nerve to enter the evil city and try

to kill the protagonists. The group escaped unharmed, but became separated in the

 process.

The third event was meeting again. The separated persons endured dangers and

risks as they sought to find one another once again. Eventually, they met in a big city.

Once there, they planned for their next course of action.

The fourth scene was traveling to the home of the “eye of the world”. The eye of

the world was an object that worked in conjunction with the wheel of time to create the

world as it is now. The Dark One’s interest, besides the three boys, was the eye of the

world. If captured, it would help aid the Dark One to take over the world. The

protagonists had to reach the eye quickly and save it from being taken over.

The fifth and final scene was the battle between the Dark One and Rand Al’Thor.

While the others worked to battle minions of evil that were nearby the eye of the world,

the Dark One managed to sweep Rand away into a different world. There, they fought.

Rand did something miraculous and managed to fend off the Dark One. Finally, Rand

delivered a final blow to the Dark One. The evil master said that the battle was not over,

but Rand escaped from the world just in time.

Rand, who emerged to be the most important character of the book, felt mixed

emotions during the book. In his adventures, he experienced laughter, excitement,

adventure, pain, suffering, and fright. At the end of the book, he learned a secret about

himself, which was the scariest thing he ever encountered. However, he was not

completely devastated, for once he informed Moiraine about his predicament, she assured

him that there would be ways to save him.

The title of the book had to do with saving the world, henceforth the title The Eye

of the World. As I said before, events of the world partially revolved around the eye of

the world. If that was captured by someone with bad intentions, the earth would fall into

chaos.

If I were in the position of Rand, Perrin, or Matt, I would do exactly the same

things as they had done. The boys made the right choice to follow Moiraine. I would

have done exactly that so that I would be safe. The only think I would do differently is

not doubt her. Of course, the boys did not have the luxury of reading a book about

Moiraine and discovering her personality quickly, so they had a right to be a little wary of

her at first. However, I wouldn’t doubt her for a second because I would know of the

immense knowledge she had.

The time period depicted in The Eye of the World was very different than today’s

world. First off, weapons such as swords and bows and arrows were used in the story.

Nowadays, those weapons are considered to be old fashioned. Guns, tanks, and other

firepower have taken the place of the old weapons. Money was also different in the

story. Gold coins and silver marks were used rather than paper money. The last thing

that was different was the lack of technology. No airplanes flew in the skies, no cars

drove on streets, and no television sets played in living rooms. The people learned to

entertain themselves rather than let technology entertain them.

I really liked the way the story ended. It was set up perfectly so that the next

book would carry the story on. I am now eager to begin book two in the spectacular

Wheel of Time series.
