Together we join our hearts and minds and voices to praise the unseen God,

the Ancient One who holds all things in balance.

    Together, we praise Jesus Christ,

the visible symbol of God’s forgiving love and compassion for us all.

Together, we praise the Holy Spirit,

who works in us, and through us, encircling all creation.

    Recucitó

    in English? French? German? (Ralph)

Today we celebrate that Jesus Christ freed us from the fear of death,

through his resurrection from the grave!

Today we are freed from all guilt,

    freed from our broken lives

freed for the work of healing our broken world.

Today, we are given new life and new hope!

    Recucitó

    in Korean -- Joe

    Therefore, Ever-living God,

be present with us now and shine your light upon us.

May your light and your love dispel the darkness of our world.

    Through Christ’s resurrection,

may the fire of your love forever burn in our hearts!

(as the final refrain is being sung the Paschal Candle is lit by Joe)

Territorial Acknowledgement [Jason] As we come together today,

let us take a moment to acknowledge this sacred land

on which Emmanuel College and the University of Toronto stands.

This has been a site of human activity for many thousands of years.

This land is the territory of the Huron-Wendat and Petun First Nations,

the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River.

The territory was the subject of the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt

Covenant, an agreement between the Iroquois Confederacy,

the Confederacy of the Ojibwe and allied nations

to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes.

Today, the meeting place of Toronto is still the home to many

Indigenous people from across Turtle Island.

We are grateful for the opportunity to live and work on this territory.

Let us always seeks to be mindful of broken covenants

and the need to strive to make right with all our relations.

    Opening Prayer [Jason]

    God of resurrection,

You have rolled the stone away,

and our tomb has been opened wide.

    Through your resurrection,

we are given new hope, new life, and new love.

    May we encounter you, risen,

on long and winding roads, on beaches with friends,

    and in our very lives.

This we pray, in your risen name. Amen.

Hymn: VU 176 Who is there on this Easter Morning?

    Matt on organ

WORD: Gospel Reading: John 20:1-18 Awit

A reading from the Gospel of John

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to

the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and

went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to

them, ‘They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they

have laid him.’ Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went towards the

tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and

reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying

there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into

the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on

Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by

itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw

and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from

the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes.

But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into

the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been

lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, ‘Woman, why are

you weeping?’ She said to them, ‘They have taken away my Lord, and I do not

know where they have laid him.’ When she had said this, she turned round and saw

Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her,

‘Woman, why are you weeping? For whom are you looking?’ Supposing him to be

the gardener, she said to him, ‘Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you

have laid him, and I will take him away.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ She turned and

said to him in Hebrew,* ‘Rabbouni!’ (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, ‘Do

not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my

brothers and say to them, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God

and your God.” ’ Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have

seen the Lord’; and she told them that he had said these things to her…

Musical Offering: Christ Lag in Todesbanden

Offered as a gift to our preacher Ralph Carl Wushke on the occasion of his

    retirement.

Sung by Oliver and Matt, with Bill and Becca on percussion

    Gospel Reading: John 21:1-13 Awit

After these things Jesus showed himself to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and

he showed himself in this way. Gathered there together were Simon Peter, Thomas

called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others

of his disciples. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him,

“We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they

    caught nothing.

Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it

was Jesus. Jesus said to them, “Children, you have no fish, have you?” They

answered him, “No.” He said to them, “Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and

you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in

because there were so many fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It

is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes,

for he was naked, and jumped into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat,

dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, only about a

    hundred yards off.

When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and

bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” So

Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred

fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said

to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared to ask him,

“Who are you?” because they knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread

and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches. Thanks be to God.

Prayers of the People: Jeannette Unger

O God, who lives again, among us,

    We pray for our world

and we ask that you would appear to us,

bringing your life, your light, and your love to us all.

We pray for those who are struggling with an illness,

    with despair,

or with the breakdown of relationships….

At least 10 seconds of silence

We remember those who have died,

and we pray for those who grieve their loss…

At least 10 seconds of silence

We pray for those places in our world

where war, violence, poverty, and need are the experiences of everyday life…

At least 10 seconds of silence

    We pray for ourselves,

for our private struggles, for our heart’s yearnings, for our hidden dreams…

At least 10 seconds of silence

    We pray for the future,

especially for those who graduate this year and begin a new phase of their journey,

We pray for excitement and challenge of new beginnings and new opportunities…

At least 10 seconds of silence

We pray for our brothers and sisters in faith, especially here at Emmanuel College:

for students and faculty in the Muslim and Buddhist Studies streams, for all people

of faith, and for people of no faith, that we might live together in peace and

    harmony…

  • 7

At least 10 seconds of silence

We pray now for other concerns that are weighing on us, we offer them now, both

aloud and in the silence of our hearts…

At least 1 minute of silence, leaving room for people to add their own prayers.

Using pastoral sensitivity and intuition, close the time of silence with the

    following…

    Living, loving, risen God,

Hear our prayers and make your everlasting love known to us. Amen.

    Invitation & Peace:

    [Pam]

In the name of the One who said,

“I am the bread of life,”

I invite you to come and eat.

In the name of the One who said,

    “I am the true vine,”

I invite you to come and drink.

In the name of the One who said,

“Love one another, as I have loved, you,”

I invite you to the table of Jesus Christ.

    [Ralph]

May the Peace of the Risen Christ be with you all.

    And also with you.

    The Great Thanksgiving:

    Ralph

    Christ is Risen!

    Christ is Risen, indeed!

    Pam

    Lift up your hearts!

We lift them up to the Lord.

    Ralph

Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.

It is right to give God thanks and praise!

    Pam

Hallelujah, thanks and praise, ever-living God,

worker of wonders, maker of miracles,

author of all life and giver of life eternal!

Out of chaos and fear you bring beauty and hope.

Out of despair and death you create courage and new life.

And so, with the risen Christ,

    who makes all things new

by the power of his resurrection,

we join in the song of a new day,

    to sing your praise:

    Ralph

As we gather together at this table, we remember Jesus.

He healed the sick and fed the hungry.

He forgave sins and freed those held captive by demonic powers.

He crossed barriers of race, class, culture, and gender.

He preached and practised unconditional love—

love of God, love of neighbour,

love of friend, love of enemy—

he commanded his followers to love one another as he had loved them.

    Pam

We remember the meals that Jesus shared throughout his ministry:

    with saints and sinners,

with crowds of thousands on the hillside

with weary travellers on long Emmaus roads,

with old friends on a beach,

in the face of death, in an upper room.

    Ralph

We remember that on the night before he died,

Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after giving thanks to you,

he broke it, and gave it to those who sat with him, saying:

    “Take and eat.

This is my body, given for you.

Whenever you do this, remember me.”

    Pam

In the same way he took the cup, saying:

    “Drink this.

This is the cup of the new covenant.

Whenever you do this, remember me.

Great is the mystery of faith:

Christ has died. Christ is Risen. Christ will come again.

  • 11

    Pam

    Send, O God,

Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts,

that all who share in this bread and this cup

may be the body of Christ: light, life, and love in the world.

Through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

all glory is yours, God most holy,

    now and forever.

    Amen

    The Lord’s Prayer

    Eternal Spirit, Earth-maker, Pain-bearer, Life-giver,

Source of all that is and that shall be,

Father and Mother of us all,

Loving God, in whom is heaven:

The hallowing of your name echo

    through the universe!

May the way of your justice

be followed by the peoples of the world!

    Your heavenly will be done

    by all created beings!

Your commonwealth of peace and freedom

ustain our hope and come on earth.

With the bread we need for today, feed us.

In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us.

In times of temptation and test, strengthen us.

From trials too great to endure, spare us.

From the grip of all that is evil, free us.

For you reign in the glory of the power that is love,

    now and forever. Amen
